Desire Z hboot install only with your phone - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have been following closely the G2 rom development threads and up to now everything has gone well.
If you want to install Virtous new roms you must install the new PC101.img first.
As didnt want to setup a ADB enabled PC again, I just followed these steps.
1-Ensure you already have a 4 way reboot rom (Recovery, hot restart, restart, and bootloader).
2-Download the new PC101.img to the root dir of your minisd card. Be prepared with a PC and minisd card reader. Or prepare another sdcard with any rom.
3-Reboot phone into bootloader. Be sure the PC101,img is on the minisd installed on your phone.
4-You will be in the bootload-reset-etc menu (the white menu). Select bootload.
This will flash your phone with the new PC101.img. You will see a small vertical line filling up as it flashes.
5-When finished, it will prompt you to reboot your phone. Do so.
6-You will see the green HTC logo, just let it there for 3 minutes and dont panic, you still have to install a rom. Pull battery.
7-Now swap the minisdcard with the card that contains the rom (Unity works great). Install battery and push the on button while pressing volume down to go to Clockwork recovery mode.
8-Install rom. No need to wipe as the new PC101.img formatted the internal 4Gb ram.
Thats it, hope it works.Worked for me.

I thought the file had to be pc10img.zip?

Yes, that one. Sorry, will edit. Thanks for the point out.

I tried but it keeps telling me no image or wrong image.

Ty. Directions on how to return to g2 hboot without unrooting and installing a full pc10img would be great.

I believe theres a thread that contains all stock and modded hboots. Also has instructions. May I ask why would you return to stock?

I would chance to say that it has to be renamed to capital letters, as in runs in a 'nix environment.

[Q] Can't upgrade clockwork mod from 2.5

Okay, so I was trying to upgrade to the latest nightly for my mother, since she loves gingerbread now. So here is my issue, I know that I need clockwork mod 3.0 or higher to get the nightlies to work, I have gotten #14 to install with the old recovery she has on there now. But when I try to update the recovery it will either not upgrade or revert back to 2.5 upon reboot. For example:
If I try using fastboot to install, I get an error. I don't remember exact error, but its a long the lines of it can't install.
If I try using the PB31IMG.zip method, but it just detects the zip and wont install or anything.
If I install the recovery via the recovery, it will work for the one time it loads, then upon reboot it reverts to old one.
I tried installing the newest nightly with the old recovery, but it will just load and then soft boot and repeat forever till I pull battery.
I rooted the phone with the unrevokr root and recovery method, so I don't know if that has anything to do with my problems.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hmmm thats starange...... when you flashed it in hboot did you have your SD formatted fat32? If not bootloader won't read it.

Indeed it did, I would then open winrar, and just drop the new .img file in and overwrite the old one. Maybe I should make a new zip file and add the other config file or whatever it is to the new zip. Otherwise, I am SOL lol.

Before you flash a new recovery with ROM Manager go into ROM manager settings and check the box to erase the old recovery before flashing the new one.
Then scroll to the bottom of the main ROM Manager menu and select all clockworkmod recoveries. Flash 3.0.0.8 since it has fixes for 3.0.0.5 issues.

Still not working, just does checking the zip and then goes back to hboot. I am going to try formating the internal memory, and put a copy on there and see if that does anything. Would having S-ON have anything to do with my problem?
Well I fixed it, was that I had S-On still enabled. I guess I'm so used to my nexus that I forgot that I needed that off to do that.

[GUIDE] Installing DZ HBoot and Virtuous Unity 1.31 without adb/PC

So, you've seen those new Sense 3.0 ROMs floating around, but haven't had an opportunity to try them yet? Well, I've developed a simplified method for getting you rolling with Virtuous Unity 1.31. Of course, after you have installed the DZ Hboot, you can install any Sense 3.0 ROM you wish, even though this guide is specifically for Unity.
This guide will show you how to install the DZ Hboot, and the Virtuous Unity ROM, with out using adb or a computer. The entire process is done on the phone.
First, let me thank the Virtuous dev team responsible for this gem of a ROM. Excellent work, and we tip our hats.
Now, this installation requires the following:
A rooted G2 with Clockwork Recovery 3.0.2.4.
Two MicroSD cards.
Optional: WiFi access, Tapatalk and Opera Mobile, installed internally. Opera makes downloading the required files much more reliable, and it can be easier using TT to browse this page.
The first thing you should do is stop by www.VirtuousRom.com, and check things out there. The Unity ROM and the OC frequency patch come from their website, and I firmly believe in giving credit where it is due.
Once you are ready to begin, download Unity 1.31 from this link, preferably via WiFi. This beast is about 400MBs, so be you may not want to deal with cellular speeds. You can also find this ROM on RomManager, if you prefer, under the Virtuous tab.
http://www.multiupload.com/TS4IAWJVMZ
Once that has finished, you should download the OC Frequency patch. You may not need it, but you definitely want to have it already downloaded if it is needed.
http://unity.flemmard.net/patches/virtuous_unity-ocfreq-patch.zip
You will also want to download a good radio to use, since the DZ Hboot will overwrite your current radio. This is the most current compatible radio:
http://www.mediafire.com/?r1tal256p11uzyz
Once you have finished downloading these files, use a file manager (ES File Manager or Astro, etc) to check the SDCard root (/sdcard/) to make sure there is no file named PC10IMG.zip located there. I'll explain why shortly. After you have confirmed this, shut off your phone, remove the battery, remove the SDCard, and insert the second card. Replace the battery, and reboot.
After the phone is running again, you need to download this file: http://db.tt/z3nb1hhN If the link stops working, please PM me so I can upload the file to an alternative service, as this is from my personal Dropbox.
When the download finishes, use a file manager, and find /download/DZHboot_PC10IMG.zip. Copy/paste it to the root of your SDCard, and then rename it PC10IMG.zip.
A quick word about PC10IMG.zip: this file, when present on the root of your SDCard, will automatically be read by your bootloader. We want this to update your HBoot. However, the reason we DO NOT want a PC10IMG on the first card is because this file also prevents the bootloader from being able to enter recovery. This is why this method requires two cards. One to flash the HBoot, and one to enter recovery to flash a ROM. Once the HBoot flashes, it will wipe your phone, so you must have a ROM or backup to get it working again.
Reboot your phone into bootloader. If you have 3/4 way reboot, simply hold the power button while the phone is on, select reboot/restart, and select bootloader. If you do not have this feature, shut the phone off, then hold volume down+camera key, then press power. The bootloader will scan for updates, and will then prompt you if you wish to apply the update. Press volume up to accept this prompt. Do not turn the phone off or remove the battery while this process is engaged! When it is complete, you will be prompted to reboot the phone. Do so. You will notice that your phone is "stuck" at the white HTC bootsplash, even if you have flashed a different splash image. This is normal.
Remove the battery. Remove the SDCard, and insert the first card. Boot into the bootloader, and then volume-down to recovery, and press power. While the phone has technically been "wiped", there is the possibility of remaining bits of info in the memory, so it is good practice to perform a complete wipe. Scroll down to "mounts and storage", and select the following options: "format /cache, format /data, and format /system." DO NOT format /sdcard!!!
Now press the back key to return to the main screen, and select "install a .zip from SDCard". You can find Virtuous Unity in the /download folder if you downloaded from your web browser, or /clockworkmod/downloads/ if you used RomManager. Select the Unity zip file, and install it. Once this is done, press the back key to the main menu, select "reboot device".
Once the G2 has started up, you may experience lockups. This is a known bug with the G2 related to overclocking. If it happens, reboot into bootloader, enter the recovery, and flash /download/virtuous_unity-ocfreq-patch.zip. This should fix the problem!
Last step: open a file manager, and find the radio file you downloaded earlier. It should be in /download, and is a .zip named Vision Radio 12.56.60.25 26.10.04.03 PC10IMG.zip. Copy/Paste to the root of your SDCard (which we can do now that the phone is working again!) And then rename it PC10IMG.zip Reboot one last time into bootloader, and again press volume up to accept the update. When it is done, reboot the phone as prompted. Delete the PC10IMG.zip files from the root of each SDCard, and you are done! Enjoy!
Hope you find this helpful!
EDIT: Updated the DB link to the Hboot.
EDIT AGAIN: Yet another replacement DB link for the HBoot. I have a friend who has offered to host this file on his own server, I just haven't gotten the chance to upload it yet. I'll be replacing this link with a permanent one soon.

Hey, I'm really sorry if this is in the wrong thread.
I just ran across something. I tried flashing the PC10IMG, but someone told me it should reboot twice and I should have the stock splash screen. Didn't go that way... Looks like only the Bootloader changed, and I can now flash the Virtuous Unity ROMS so yea. First of all does anyone know what's wrong?
Also I'm just guessing that the flashing process was interrupted before it could get to the splash and radio partitions or something, and I need to reflash HBOOT, Could flashing the same Hboot brick your device?
Thanks in advance!

Same Question here i want to play with Sense but how i go back to the G2 bootloader?
Does the dz hboot effect performance (aosp)? When more memory is added to the rom memory does it effect your ram? And does the dz hboot effect tmobile in any way? I want to run the new sense roms but not at a lose of performance to any other roms..thank you. Oh and thanks button pressed, I read other posts and this guide is very easy to understand and user friendly.

There will be no lose in performance your total RAM will not be affected. The only difference is that your data partiton (were market apps go) will be smaller and the system partiton (where the Rom goes) will be bigger.
It won't affect the way your device works, things like WiFi calling will still work.

HTC EVO Bootloop

Hey guys, quick question.
My friend has an HTC EVO on Spring. Not rooted, nothing. It's completely stock. It just started acting weird. I pulled the battery and it went into bootloop. When i press the volume rockers + on button it will boot into recovery mode? if thats what it's even called.
After a while of bootlooping the phone shows an image of a phone with a triangle with an exclamation point in it.
Any help?
I've got an infuse, so i'm ok with flashing and rooting and whatnot, i jsut dont know how to reset the HTC.
Sounds like an ota update that was interrupted or a bad ota update

not sure if that all matters. i tried restore in clockwork recovery and it didnt change anything....still stuck.
CWM blows. Wipe cache and dalvik and flash another kernel.
thanks for the reply.
i am new. how do i do that from recovery?
i did wipe the dalvik cache. is that enough? then i tried unzipping the tiamat sbc kernel and it was still stuck.
btw....is there a better rom that supports wimax???
If possible, upgrade to a Ra based recovery. That'll make the wiping and flashing easier on your part, as far as ROM choice, I'll give you sense.

<--- that way-ish
RA refers to Amon Ra, another popular recovery for the EVO. CWM is known for being troublesome on the EVO, so RA-based recoveries are the way to go.

Flashing recoveries for dummies:
STEP 1: Download recovery of choice (smelkusmod ra recovery)
STEP 2: Rename the zip to "PC36IMG.zip" and move to root of the SD card
STEP 3: Boot to bootloader and follow the prompts to update recovery
STEP 4: reboot to recovery
STEP 5: Prosper!!
(If this doesn't go to plan, unzip the pc36img and check the txt file and change the mainver to 1.00.000.0, zip the file again, and repeat from the beginning)
Hope this does the trick
Tried it. Read that whole thread. What is fastboot? When I select it in recovery it doesn't seem to be the same as what everyone talks about. My recovery in clockelwork alternate recovery looks like the original and doesn't do anything special.

PM me and I'll help you sort this out once and for all when I get some free time.
Try this. Download the Smelkus recovery and place it on the root of your SD card (not in any folders). Rename the file PC36IMG.zip (make sure you don't have an extra .zip extension on the end or it won't work). Once this is done, turn the phone OFF and unplug your phone from your computer. Once the phone is OFF, hold down the volume DOWN button, then press the power button and wait for the HBOOT screen to load. If everything works as it should, you'll get a prompt asking you if you want to update. Use the appropriate keys to select YES, then wait for the update to load. When you go into HBOOT, as part of its loading process, it looks for a file on the SD card named PC36IMG.zip and when it finds it, will ask if you want to update. Also, make sure you don't have more than one file on your SD card named PC36IMG.zip, or you'll have issues. Once you've got the recovery loaded, you can re-namethe file on your SD card something like PC36IMG1.zip, to avoid any issues should you have to use HBOOT to install another PC36IMG.zip file down the road.
That's what I did but I did it all from my phone. Does that matter?

That's what I'm telling you to do. You can actually download the PC36IMG to your phone, but you'll have to move it to the root of your SD card using something like Astro File Manager. That's why most instructions say to hook your phone up to a PC and download the PC36IMG to the root of the SD card.
When you press the volume down button and power button, what happens?

I get what looks like the original recovery. I got cwm and flashed the alternate recovery. I tried shutting the phone down to bootloader and it will try to flash the img. Then it gets stuck on parsing. I changed the maniver and then it says no image when flashing and there's nothing about an update. I'm s-on.

Flash Image GUI.
Looks like that's what I will have to do. I started out trying to avoid paying. 99¢ for it. Seems pretty dumb now lol.

Um, you can get it free on this site.
But seriously, is 99 cents too much to pay for such a useful app?
Which do I flash? The img or the mirror???

Phone stuck in bootlooop!

I installed ParanoidRom and everything was going fine till my phone did not start and went into bootloop.I'm really worried,i don't know what to do.
I've gone into recovery and wiped everything from cache to sd card but nothing seems to help.I have tried re-flashing boot.img and recovery.zip files but nothing works.I tried downloading stock RUU for my device but could not find the right one.
I want to flash another custom ROM but i don't know how to do it without access to SD card.SD card does not show up in my computer. It shows up only if i start my phone and change from "charge only" to "disk drive" but since i can't boot into my phone that option is closed. Is there any way to install the ROM from the zip file on my computer?
I have tried extracting the contents of the ROM zip file to the fastboot folder and flashing the boot.img but it gives a BootMagic check fail error.
Is my phone bricked,is there any hope,i can't lose my phone.
Yes there is hope, so don't worry
Go to recovery, Mount SD card, transfer ROM to phone and flash

But how do i transfer ROM to phone?
R: Phone stuck in bootlooop!
Get into recovery->advanced->mount usb storage. The pc will open your sd card. Just paste the rom then on the phone do unmount

When i go into recovery, the phone opens the clockwork mod recovery and under it's advanced menu the only options are :
reboot recovery
wipe dalvik cache
report error
key test
show log
fix permissions
partition internal sdcard
go back
There is no option to mount USB storage!
R: Phone stuck in bootlooop!
Oh sorry I use twrp recovery. In clock work there should be a mounts and storage option, then mount usb storage

Ok i managed to copy the ROM zip file to SD card but when i tried to flash boot.img it gave me a BootMagic check fail error. What do i do now.
R: Phone stuck in bootlooop!
Why are you still trying with that rom?
Custom roms are sometimes bad, its happened to me 2 times one after the other....theyre just too buggy to work.
also putting stuff on microsd card from phone is kinda....stupid. just use the microsd card adapter for pcs they always hand out one along with the micro.
Download ANOTHER custom rom (there are many better ones than paranoid...foxhound or rootbox are good. Not cyanogen they still need to make a complete version for s3).
And FACTORY RESET/FORMAT EVERYTHING and then flash from rom package. Why bother flashing boot image?

Plus theres no reason to be worried if ur phone is stuck in bootloop. Bootloop saves phones not kills them. If it can't run the os (custom rom)....well it just can't. Take off the battery and re insert, at least it wont run out of battery life.
Then when uve got everything ready along with rom on sd card just boot in recovery mode and do what i told you earlier. If sdcard is a problem i remember there was an option in clockwork to have the rom pushed to the phone from the pc just like what happens when u root with odin...

I'm trying a different ROM.I'm not using Paranoid ROM i'm using PAC ROM.I don't have a microsd card adapter but anyways i was able to successfully copy the ROM zip file to the sd card.
I have downloaded PAC ROM but i can't install it.If i install it by flashing the boot image in fastboot folder it gives a BootMagic error and if i try to install it via CWM recovery it aborts the installation and gives some weird error.

I'm using the boot image found in the zip file of PAC ROM.When i flash this boot image it first sends boot but there's and error when it tries to write boot.
I was using the command fastboot flash boot boot.img but that was giving an error so i tried using another command, fasboot flash system boot.img and there was no error this time.So i typed the command fastboot reboot and went into recovery to open CWM recovery and chose install zip from sd card,i chose the zip file but it gave an error and did not install.I don't know what to do.Looks lik my phone is done.
R: Phone stuck in bootlooop!
Don't do that stuff without asking! I don't think it was a good idea to do fastboot flash system.. But it may be fixable. I've never used that command so just wait that someone that knows what to do gets here.

using that command didn't do any damage. The problem is that i cannot install from Zip file on the sd card,it gives an error :
E:Error in /sdcard/Winzipfile.zip (winzip is the name of the ROM file)
(Status 0)
Installation aborted.

Are you going mad? What the hell is pac rom? Are you fixated with paranoid android? All they have are.dropdown windows like tablets...not really very useful. Get a MORE popular rom, and more stable. Try aokp.
And dont flash just the bootimage. Flash it ALL. Reset everythung to factory and install FULL rom...at this point its obvious.the problem of the paranoid rom doesnt rely in bootimage...maybe its kernel.
So:
Intstall new rom + new kernel(just to be sure its not kernel problem).

How about googling something before calling someone else mad?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1911478
PAC rom is quite popular.
And only image files can be flashed and there is only one image file in the zip file called boot.img
R: Phone stuck in bootlooop!
dont get sensitive i was trying to help. What i meant was:
"Good sir, would it not be wiser to stop flashing bits of roms and instead flash all of it through cwm?
It does, in fact, seem to me that your downloaded rom/roms appear to be broken or somewhat buggy, perhaps flashing some evem MORE popular roms that the already very popular pac rom would fix the problem, thus liberating all of us from the madness you cell-phone is causing and making it's user happy once more"
