Android version 2.3.4 - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok guys I'm new to the whole android os and smartphones/androids in general. Never had either. But I have a fully rooted htc evo 4g running cm7.1 paired with the tiamat 4.0.6 kernel and I'm wondering what version of the android is 2.3.4? I know 2.3.3 was gb and 2.2 was froyo but is this still gb or what?

Yes this is still GB. It's just an updated version. From what I understand, 2.4 will be Ice Cream Sandwich, which is a hybrid GB/Honeycomb OS catered specifically for smartphones.

Ok but is there any way to get to honeycomb frim here?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App

I think I remember seeing a Honeycomb ROM floating around on here, but it's very unstable and missing a lot of features. It was mainly a test ROM I think. Honeycomb is mainly for tablets, but that's not to say it isn't possible. Your best bet would be to find the Honeybread theme for CM7. It's GB with a Honeycomb look and feel.

Don't think so, as Google hasn't released the source. Plus it's for tablets so kinda pointless IMO...

Any suggestions?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App

There won't be a honeycomb rom available for a phone until Google releases the source code, which won't happen until they release the next iteration of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich. ICS is supposed to combine Honeycomb and Gingerbread, so you may not see many honeycomb roms because there won't be a demand for them.
If you are looking for a tablet experience on your Evo, the best bet would be to try a rom called the "Flyer Express" it's in the development section, and it's making some good progress. But you won't see anyone building a honeycomb rom anytime soon.

Alright thanks.

What is the best software to put on DInc ?

I just discovered Rooting and putting stuff on my Incredible , and I have noticed before that I've seen new Gingerbread software come out and Ice Cream and I'm still stuck on Android 2.2 .. any suggestions ? And how would I got about doing it ?
well, there are currently no leaks at all for Ice Cream so that is out of the question. For Gingerbread i would recommend CM7 at http://www.cyanogenmod.com/ it has gingerbread and is VERY fast and stable but, does not have sense. There are many threads here about flashing roms so i don't really feel like i need to go into that but look around and i guarantee you can find one.

The best one to flash is the one you like the most. Everything isn't for everybody. I did gingerbread for awhile now I'm on zroms. Its up to you there all good and the developers rock.

Well first decide if you like sense, which is basically the HTC interface of your stock ROM, or AOSP, which is the android interface the way google designed it. Then you can pick a corresponding rom. For example, SkyRaider Sense 4.0 is sense rom, and CM7 is AOSP.
SkyRaider Sense
CM7 Nightlies AOSP
As far as getting it done there are plenty of guides that can be found by searching for rooting and flashing roms. Also, most rom threads in these forums have instructions in the first post.
CyanogenMod 7 FTW!
If you decide on aosp salvage mod and evervolv are both excellent roms

i like skyraider and uber roms from joel.....both are nice and have sense wich is what i like. not into the asop roms since no sense
I recommend the new GB leak or gingersense remix... I'm a big sense ui fan though. AOSP definately CM7
If you want sense go for Uber Z. VERY STABLE ROM. If not, then go for CM7.
I use either Warm Z two point two or Skyraider 4.0 since both are very stable, fast, and solid battery life. I stick to warm z 90% of the time though. I like landscape. lol

^ reminds me of this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Acrcm09NDdE&feature=youtube_gdata_player
CM7 Nightlies
Stable vs. Beta
There are a lot of Beta Roms running Gingerbread and various versions of HTC Sense.
CyanogenMod 7 is by far the most stable Gingerbread ROM I've see out there (although it's Vanilla so you won't see any HTC Sense going on).
The nice thing about ROMs is you can flash, flash, and flash some more.
I'll second Uber Z for Sense and CyanogenMod 7 for AOSP.
But, as Sharpe said, you can flash and flash to your heart's content. With these Sense 3.0 leaks, I've been flashing like a maniac and having a blast. And if a ROM doesn't work for me, I can just restore to my Nandroid backup and I'm back to where I started (CM7, in this case). ^.^
I'm rocking Carbonite v5. Awesome visuals, great battery life, and very fast.

Official EVO 2.3 based roms?

Will there be custom roms based off the official gingerbread update soon? Is it necessary? I would feel better to have a custom rom based of the official update just released. Also can it be used and have sense 3.0 inserted? That would be awesome. I'm pretty sure that only bits and pieces will be used the fix issues and stuff. What do you think?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Yes. I'm sure there's one or more available at this very moment. As for elements of Sense 3.0, the Synergy rom has it. It is Gingerbread, Sense 2.1 and 3.0 all rolled in one. It should be available to the masses very soon. It is very well built

Sounds good. I can't wait to see it. Hopefully everything works like hdmi and all the bells and whistles.

There will be no SDK port of ICS as stated by the Cyanogen Mod team. We can only expect a port (CM9) when the ICS source is out.

Now it's only a matter of time till our awesome devs get it to run on our phones!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Go Devs, Go Devs!
let the development start !!
REALLY exciting news!!! Hope the CM team picks up ICS in their nightlies quickly!
Cant wait to try the new interface/functions, some features should be similar to Sense roms.
Awesome!...now both the devs and the CM team can work on outing above perfect ROMs for our 'still very much alive; HD2!!!...its only a matter of time i guess. And with talk of a possible Siri port for Android, things are really looking up for the HD2...and dont forget that the full 576MB of RAM has not been unleasehd until now.If all the above is made possible, i think the HD2 will be relevant for at least one more year...
Woohooooo..!!!
Gonna get the ICS on the HD2 pretty soon now..!!!
Yessshhh!!! Cmon devss !! Ics before xmas!!! :d

So our HD2 is still fast enough for this ICS right?????????? Lol just want to make sure, don't want it to be like the current sense 3.0 roms

You cant compare stock Android to Sense. Sense is android with ****loads of bloat code added to it. Dont get me wrong I like Sense but im really looking forward to stock ICS.
Compared to Gingerbread, how long you think until we have a functional port to ICS, just asking since I want into Android when Gingerbread was released

It depends, GB and ICS are quite a bit different than froyo was to GB. If I remember correctly it took a couple of weeks to a month after GB came out when we had a stable enough build to be considered daily.
Proper drivers are gonna determine how fast we get ICS developed on the HD2.
I can't decide which I'm more excited about: ICS itself, or the included Honeycomb source!
Either way, there is no other phone I would want to have right now!

Well, as I remember it, Gingerbread was released around the same time last year. And just before Christmas there were many different available roms that ran smoothly without a lot of issues.
So lets, hope this will hold true with the ICS release as well.
waiting ICS HD2
Nice, cant wait till the ROM i use gets updated to 4.0
New interface/functions look epic
Will be getting a Nexus Galaxy next januari
free bump..

Ics kernel building?

So ice cream sandwich is built to run on a Linux 3.0 kernel, and all of the current ROMs on the EVO are running in a modified 2.6 kernel. Now go look up the nexus s 4g with ics (it has similar specs to the EVO). It's built on a 3.0 kernel and it just flies.
I'm wondering if anyone is working on building a 3.0 kernel for the evo. I not, I would like to help try. Where should I look for that?

A kernel is definitely being worked on as we speak. Check out @Preludedrew on twitter. He has an update on the status of ICS for the EVO and is a front runner on the ICS builds.
