[Q] Problems with Ubuntu on G2 - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have recently gotten ubuntu working on my G2. I have ran into 3 problems though...
1) after rebooting my phone and going into terminal (to start ubuntu up) i type
"cd /sdcard/ubuntu"
then
"bootubuntu"
Which goes off without a hitch, but when i start up the VNC so i can use the GUI, i get a problem. all the commands go through but it makes a new localhost.. which gives me problems because A) i dont wanna setup a new VNC everytime i wanna use ubuntu and B) When the new localhost:2 or localhost:3 (depending on how many times i run "bootubuntu") i dont know the port its calling for or whatever information its needs for to connect to it with VNC. (to see what i mean by this look at the screenshot i took!
AND SECONDLY...
2) WHEN i can get into ubuntu (the only way ive gotten it to work is when i use it the first time) (ie. whenever i wanna use it i delete the ubuntu SD card contents and recopy them over and re-run "sh install.sh" this doesnt take long to run but it does take long to copy over 2 GB of stuff to the SD card) Which definately isnt the way its supposed to be used everytime i wanna use ubuntu. BUT BUT BUT, when i do this and it works, the keyboard inputs in ubuntu or completely screwed up! Ive yet to find the answer online so if anyone can help me this would be much appreciated, but not useful if i cant fix my first problem...
THIRDLY...
3) When i try to use USB storage after running ubuntu in VNC it simply wont connect, I have tryed and tryed again. The only way to fix this is to reboot my phone, which is when i found my problem with restarting and not being able successfully restart ubuntu without recopying the files over..
ANY HELP IS APPRECIATED!!!

Actually, this exact problem is why I stopped using Ubuntu on the Vision. I could never get the keyboard straightened out and it would only load once. It's a great way to show off Android's capability to an iOS user, but it sucks that it's a one-time only deal.

You've been a member of this site for a year and you still don't know where to post a question?

I didn't realize I posted it back in the Q&A, sorry!

i have solved this problem and slow vnc speeds by installed xrdp and using a RDP viewer from the market. works ALOT faster with desktop and keyboard mouse works perfectly.

how do I upgrade? and will I lose functionality with missing sync? would there be another way to connect to the laptop usint something else if missing sync isn't compatible yet, or should I just wait?
You lose missing sync It doesn't work with WM6 unfortunatly. There is no other way to connect, unless you (like me) have an Intel Mac and can use Parallels or Bootcamp
A solution for WM6 and MAC
I have been a PDA and Markspace user for many years and always have the same problem when upgrading form 2003 to WM5 to WM6. Markspace tries to keep up but there seems to always be a delay.
FINALLY I have stumbled across a solution that works really well to sync both iCal and Address Book.

You lose compatibility with MissingSync, which is stupid, since the phone uses the same protocol. For whatever reason, the phone detects MissingSync and refuses to continue.
I gave up on MissingSync a few months ago. It was just too buggy -- sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't. Luckily I use my phone with an Exchange server, so 99% of my data is synced over the air with the server (man, that's nice after ROM updates). For moving over files, I just use bluetooth --- as far as installing applications, I ended up moving almost all of the CAB files over to the SD card since I ended up reinstalling things 2-3 times a week due to new ROM's.
ActiveSync just works; it's really a shame that M$ won't build a Mac ActiveSync client that interfaces properly with iSync and Entourage. Hell, it'd be nice if they'd give all of the specs to Mark/Space so they can build a sync client that's actually as reliable as ActiveSync. It really seems like Microsoft doesn't realize that they could make tons of money if they'd throw more support at Macs -- they make most of their money on Office and other programs, not the operating systems. Heck, if they made a Linux version of Office, they'd sell tons of copies -- and it wouldn't be that hard to recompile it, since Office Mac is already running on Unix -- they'd just have to substitute some of the Carbon libraries.
Anyway... that being said -- when I need to flash ROM's, etc; I use Parallels. Make sure you turn "Auto attach USB" and don't plug your phone in before starting Windows. It works very well - I haven't had a problem yet. But I would strongly recommend using HardSPL and not flashing radios or SPL's via Parallels, just in case -- you can easily recover from a failed OS flash, but a failed radio flash can be very bad. Use a PC for those... or even the SD flash method described in the wiki (altho the stupid .DS_Store and .Trashes files seem to mess with that and prevent it from working -- so you have to slide the card into your phone with the OS running and delete those before restarting).

actually i had issues with the "auto attach USB" feature on parallels. It would tell me that the USB device is being used by the mac os...
other than that i flash everything through parallels and haven't had a problem yet.

hey, thats whats in my sig )
Also is anyone having problems sending files to their macs with resco file explorer?
I have an intel mac. i just use parellels for almost everything. I use bootcamp for flashing roms. For installing programs i just transfer .cab files over with a card.
How do i send files over via bluetooth? That would be easier.
Wow the solution was right under my nose!

Have been using it for a couple of weeks and have upgraded and hard reset at least 20 times and it syncs perfectly everytime.

Flashing my device while on linux

Is there any tool or software that will allow me to update my devices and flash them while I am on the Linux platform? The Linux platform is my os for my laptop; I do have windows running in at virtual box however I have no luck actually syncing the device through it. So I have quit trying however still would like to flash my roms and etc to my device because the laptop is just so convenient vs sitting at the desktop (keeping my ol' lady up).... Does anyone have any ideas for achieving this
since you did not say wat device you were using, this may or may not apply to you.......some devices can be upgraded using the sd card.
Yea sorry about that I am using the Xda Flame, Tilt, and Treo750 (have flashed from memory card before on the treo only: However lately it won't due it for some odd reason (worked before the first leaked WM6), But I found the ATT update off the comp worked fine). It's wierd I guess I am gonna have to study it a little more and figure out how to extract cabs. from my programs which require being synced to the comp (I think it can be done using WINRAR). Looks like I will have to buy an spare micro SD for flashing roms via the flashcard becuase I have my sd cards set just right for each device with minimal use of the computer (have a folder with alot of the needed software cabs). But hey thanks for the help I will give it a shot and see how it goes. I pulled out my bluetooth usb last night and will begin to figure out a way to sync my device with that. The install went good over on the virtual box. Will be able to see if I can get it to actually sync tonight since the old lady will be working late...

Im thinking of installing UBUNTU on my PC i just need to know how it works will it get rid of my vista ? I only ask cuase my wife will kill me if it does.
Please help I want to learn how to do more with my phone and it seems that UBUNTU is the way to go i cant get anything to work right on vista .
Thanks for any help sorry Im such a noob.
You can dual boot a computer with the OS you currently have and Ubuntu. I did it for years before I purchased my MacBook in '09. I really enjoyed Ubuntu but it has been a while since I last used it.

Yeah, you can add it as a dual boot, which is how most people do it.

When you run the CD, you *should* be prompted to choose to dual boot or not, if I remember correctly.

Correct. Make sure to hit the "install with" and not to reformat the hard drive. If you reformat the hard drive it will erase windows. I ran dual boot for a couple months then finally decided to get rid if windows all together and stick with Linux/Ubuntu. (Great decision by the way)

A dual boot system isn't hard to do if you are installing both os's onto a harddrive that has been pre-partitioned to accomodate both.
If you set up a dual boot using the existing free space on your harddrive, you have to partition that free space for the other os and if it's not enough you can run out of space fast.
The easiest way for you since you stated you are new to this is to use a virtual machine such as vmware, virtual box, or cygwin and load ubuntu in that. In vmachines the image for the other os can be set to grow in size if it needs it.

How would I go about partitioning my harddrive I really want to use this and I've tried to install cygwin with no luck I must have done something wrong ?
Now I'm on the ubuntu site and there are different ways to do this it says download and install and there is another option to run it with windows. Now I can't use these without partitioning my harddrive I have like 100gb free memory left on there is that not allot and thanks for the help btw.

Vista has a disk management option that allows you to partition your disks.
Virtualbox is an easier setup for novices IMO but you still need to download the ubuntu iso to install into virtualbox.
Your 100GB free space can be used to make an 80GB partition for ubuntu which will be plenty. But I still suggest you use a virtual machine first before going the dual boot route.
Check dsixdas kitchen thread here in xda to get a tutorial on setting up ubuntu in virtualbox.
If you want to go dual boot, the best thing to do is read over the install instructions before you do anything so you're familiar with the steps. Google installing Ubuntu Dual Boot, too and you'll find a lot if info on how much space to set up for the Linux Partition, which, during install,m you have the choice to set yourself, or you can let the installer use a default size for the partition.
I remember I tried to do this on an old computer once.
Ended up overwriting windows and ****ed everything up. Especially since I couldn't even get Ubuntu to boot.
Might try it again and actually read some instructions first this time.
I just read this thread last night, and it inspired me to try dual booting Ubuntu. I had always wanted to try it, but never got around to reading up on it. Everything went smooth, and I'm now learning Ubuntu. Seems pretty nice so far, and installing it was a breeze for me. Nothing got jacked up, which is always good!

It is really nice to have access to both. I had to use my Ubuntu install to Root my EVO. It wouldn't work in Windows, so having a choice was great.
There's a lot to learn with Linux, in general, the command lines, etc, just Google as much as you can, and you'll find all the answers you need.
Also #Ubuntu on IRC is a great place to ask questions.
You people are nubs
Use the install inside windows option.... it will allow you to install ubuntu from within windows and DO ALL THE WORK for you...it adds ubuntu as a second boot option sindie of windows's bootloader... it will boot primarily into windows and at the boot screen after turning your comp on just press down and select the second option which would be ubuntu.
If you need any help just pm me. I have this set up running and ubuntu on my ext hard drive as well.
surprising that nobody's said this is a phone forum yet. this is a good thing. and i've asked more off topic...
either way, i've been trying for a while and haven't been able to install it on my late 09 imac. i mean i've tried forrever and still can't get it. anybody kno?

Recover your lost files??is a dream for GN?

Hello there,
it is one of the best phone and the easiest to recover or update in my opinion but,
the issue of no memory card is really something bad for your files in case if something happened to the phone!
i know backup is so important but what if you phone crashed all of the sudden because of an application update and you will enter in the repeated boot loops and you have to reset the phone or flash new software!!
OH! Then your will loose everything in the mobile !
it is really sad it happened to me twice in2 weeks i lost allot of good pictures.
i am sure most of the phone users tried to recover the lost files and no one could do it because the phone is identified as MTP, no logical letter drive can be assigned to the phone!!!
All recover software’s couldn’t find the phone and even when i tried hexcomp from the market to recover the pictures, couldn’t do it.
my question for our developers is there any scripts can make the phone work as usb when it is switched off ??
or ,
is there any way to assign a logical drive to the phone instead of MTP so we can recover the lost files?
I don’t know why Goggle didn’t think of such problem because it happened to allot of people and I am not used to back up my files before because there were in memory card.
I really hope the developers will work on such issue because this is the worst thing I found it in the phone.
I might be wrong but I think you can pull everything off the phone using adb whilst in recovery mode?
Dropbox.
It can sync pictures as soon as you take them.
You can sync files between multiple devices, including uploading and downloading to your phone.
Titanium Backup can be synced to drop box.
Check it out,

i tried Pull before it took long time without doing nothing
i know dropbox and i know what it do
i am asking the DEVELOPERS:
1-is there any scripts can make the phone work as usb when it is switched off ??
2-is there any way to assign a logical drive to the phone instead of MTP so we can recover the lost files?
Thanks

Theoretically you probably could write a CWM script to create a virtual folder and mount that as USB media via CWM. But it would require loading the script to the phone via ADB anyways.

[Q] Host of problems after rooting and using CM10

After a couple of hours trying to find someone with the same problems as me I came up with nothing, so I decided to make a thread.
Firstly, I am no where near versed in device hacking so I am hoping these problems are just due to my ignorance.
My coworker rooted and loaded cm10 and teamwinrecovery onto my sprint GS3 and since then I have had a few issues. The most frustrating problem I am currently experiencing is the phone will not write anything to the external sd. There is no indication as to why this is the case. Under the storage option in settings it shows that it can read the external SD card yet programs seem to not be able to see that it is there. For example my camera will not give me the option to save photos to the external SD and programs like app 2 sd wont give me the option to transfer any of the apps to the SD card even ones that i know are supposed to work like Winamp. Also ive tried using DirectoryBind to change the directory of apps and music but I'm just prompted to create a new file because the data directory doesn't exist and asks if i want to create one. I tap yes and i am just prompted with the same error again and again.
My second main issue is when I dock my phone to my windows 7 PC I get an enigmatic problem. Either i get an error that says the USB malfunctioned and cannot be recognized and the SGS3 won't show up in mycomputer. Or, the default drivers install fine and the device will show up in windows. However, if i try syncing winamp or even dragging files over to my phone it will copy for anywhere from 1 second to 5 minutes and then windows will freeze and if i close the process it will crash windows and/or winamp. I tried installing the samsung usb drivers but then i just get a device ID error and it wont show up.
I was able to find some people with similar issues but not the constantly changing one i have. All the fixes that have been suggested have not worked.
I realize this is more likely an issue with my computer than my phone but when i was running stock it would work fine.
If anyone can provide some insight into these problems or can direct me to someone with a similar issue it would be much appreciated.
I really like CM10 but these issues are deal breakers for me and I dont really want to go through risking bricking my phone in order to try and get back to stock but i will if it will fix these problems.
