how do I upgrade? and will I lose functionality with missing sync? would there be another way to connect to the laptop usint something else if missing sync isn't compatible yet, or should I just wait?
You lose missing sync It doesn't work with WM6 unfortunatly. There is no other way to connect, unless you (like me) have an Intel Mac and can use Parallels or Bootcamp
A solution for WM6 and MAC
I have been a PDA and Markspace user for many years and always have the same problem when upgrading form 2003 to WM5 to WM6. Markspace tries to keep up but there seems to always be a delay.
FINALLY I have stumbled across a solution that works really well to sync both iCal and Address Book.
Here is the link.

Give it a bash and see what you think.
To transfer files use BLUETOOTH EXPLORER.

You lose compatibility with MissingSync, which is stupid, since the phone uses the same protocol. For whatever reason, the phone detects MissingSync and refuses to continue.
I gave up on MissingSync a few months ago. It was just too buggy -- sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't. Luckily I use my phone with an Exchange server, so 99% of my data is synced over the air with the server (man, that's nice after ROM updates). For moving over files, I just use bluetooth --- as far as installing applications, I ended up moving almost all of the CAB files over to the SD card since I ended up reinstalling things 2-3 times a week due to new ROM's.
ActiveSync just works; it's really a shame that M$ won't build a Mac ActiveSync client that interfaces properly with iSync and Entourage. Hell, it'd be nice if they'd give all of the specs to Mark/Space so they can build a sync client that's actually as reliable as ActiveSync. It really seems like Microsoft doesn't realize that they could make tons of money if they'd throw more support at Macs -- they make most of their money on Office and other programs, not the operating systems. Heck, if they made a Linux version of Office, they'd sell tons of copies -- and it wouldn't be that hard to recompile it, since Office Mac is already running on Unix -- they'd just have to substitute some of the Carbon libraries.
Anyway... that being said -- when I need to flash ROM's, etc; I use Parallels. Make sure you turn "Auto attach USB" and don't plug your phone in before starting Windows. It works very well - I haven't had a problem yet. But I would strongly recommend using HardSPL and not flashing radios or SPL's via Parallels, just in case -- you can easily recover from a failed OS flash, but a failed radio flash can be very bad. Use a PC for those... or even the SD flash method described in the wiki (altho the stupid .DS_Store and .Trashes files seem to mess with that and prevent it from working -- so you have to slide the card into your phone with the OS running and delete those before restarting).

actually i had issues with the "auto attach USB" feature on parallels. It would tell me that the USB device is being used by the mac os...
other than that i flash everything through parallels and haven't had a problem yet.

hey, thats whats in my sig )
Also is anyone having problems sending files to their macs with resco file explorer?
I have an intel mac. i just use parellels for almost everything. I use bootcamp for flashing roms. For installing programs i just transfer .cab files over with a card.
How do i send files over via bluetooth? That would be easier.
Wow the solution was right under my nose!

Hey fone_fanatic I wish I took a bit more notice of your sig.
If anyone wants a great solution - this is it!!!
Have been using it for a couple of weeks and have upgraded and hard reset at least 20 times and it syncs perfectly everytime.
Yes, I've decided to take on a mammoth task, welcome to "ROSS"... "Replacment Operating System Structure" for Mobile phones & PDA's =]
The website is located here!
Yeah, you all think i'm crazy "hang on, you can't port Android to X50v!"
Well, not YET, but with help It will be done.
What is android you may ask?
Android is google's open source platform for Mobile phones and PDA's =]
So yes, I plan to create a operating system for X50v to replace WM6 with and allow users to develop/change bits of the operating system they don't like.
There will be a few "flavours"
Lite: Basics, very Basics, just Wifi/bluetooth support, a simple GUI and No applications (just a few settings). This free's up a LOT of RAM + ROM
Medium: The one "hopefully" most people will use, This is the standard one, basic office applications (replacing all the standard WM6 ones) a few games, decent GUI etc.
Heavy: The one that leaves least RAM and ROM available, the one with the most applications + usability, although it may lag a little.
Of course, we're going to build a "super-lite" version first, just to make sure it's flashable to the X50v =]
Maglite_RUS & Football may be willing to help, maybe not, we hope for his help + support throught this project
but first we need a team!!!
If you have any experience in making ROMS for X50v (ONLY, we will work on others after the X50v is done) or developing operating systems (various Linux distro's included) and Java (what the majority is coded in) then please please sign up. I plan to help develop the applications rather than the operating system myself, but I will work on ALL aspects of the project of course
If you're interested, and have found this link of google or something, then don't hesitate to email me here
Feel free to discuss =]
Hi Obsidiandesire...
This could be a great project!
It's very nice to see you're a PPC enthusiast like me...
I'm a PC software developer (not PPC) with quite experience but to start this project we need some black belt coders...
Another Linux project was already started here
http://www.handhelds.org/moin/moin.cgi/DellAximX50 but the developing speed was not so fast...
Another issue would surely be the ROM compaction problem that will kick in also on a different OS.
The only thing that could solve this on x50v would be to hack the bootloader in a way to load OS from SD or CF , so all data will be written on a fast write NAND device... By the way this would mean loosing the internal ROM!
But your approach seems to be the most sensible one, as one would never lose the possibility to startup the phone's default os (windows mobile).
It seems quite an interesting project, i have to admit i have a strong will to help you out, as i am also a professional programmer, however i am not a java, or C developer (long time i do not do anything in C), so i guess i am more of a designer myself
Well, i will keep up with this post and maybe we will colaborate in the future, i feel it's time to have our own software in the mobile's, i hate the microsoft's approach to the os handling.
Glad to see we're getting some interest in this project!!!
Hopefully, soon we could set up a website and start developing =]
who knows, we may be the lucky winners of the google competition and get $10 million! (not much use to me because im british lol)
So, you're Idea would be basically multi-boot?
sounds good, but we'd need to modify the bootloader (maybe hold enter, power + reset to switch to ROSS-Mobile?)
Sounds good! and i've just started learning Java too, so this project could take a while, hopefully, if it starts getting quite a bit of attention, we could move it to other platforms (HTC touch etc) which would make us Gods within the PDA community
I do like the posibilities of Android as it looks like it could make good use of the graphics chip in the X50v and it wouldn't have Windows Mobile lagging it down
How much RAM does it have again? It would be as powerfull as an old PC if you overclock it slightly (700mhz, 32MB RAM, 16MB graphics or something like that) and slap on a minimal OS and you could have your own [email protected] Pocket version! lol
Sorry if i've gone off on a tangent, i'm really excited about Android and it's possibilities.
First steps though, how would you get the DEFAULT android software to boot on the X50v? I think this should be our goal before starting on the project itself
this is cool. if anyone gets this to work i would be happy to be a tester. i don't know much about programming but have flash other devices with Linux.
A bit a info i picked up on flashing Linux on ipaqs is that you had to flash a new bootloader that would boot both wince and Linux. don't know why both but maybe to return to wince because to flash the boot loader you did it with a app that ran on wince and after that you would boot the bootloader and make a serial connection so that you could send the linux distro and erase wince.
Thanks for the info, more help on how to do this would be great! (I could try this on my X50v for testing purposes)
would it not be actually possible to boot the android/linux directly from a storage card? so as to effectively allow users to 'dual' boot?

Each time you would boot a os you would erase saved data (hard reset) because you would need the memory were the settings are for each os. but thats is what i think i haven't flash a device for a long time so im out of date on this as far as if they gotten a doul boot win ce and linux but i assume that this will be a problem with win ce and android dual boot.
You would have to put both os in the flash mamory(were the os goes) and find a way to save the settings from a os and store them so that it can load the settings for the other os and vice versa
but you could do it like linux on a palm zire72. i have linux on my zire but linux is on the memory card when i reset the device it will reboot onto the palm os, so no flashing happens just load the bootloader through the palm os and linux kernel loads, but at the same time palm os is hard reseted, this is palm but same linux that is used on ppc. You would need to find a way too load a bootloader during win ce but dont see that this is possible. only one os at a time.
And Obsidiandesire i will try to get an old friend that used to work on porting linux to ppc he might help on the bootloader part but haven't herd from him for a long time but will try hard on finding him. but as long as we get many people this might be possible. i will post later if i find him.(good luck on your leg)
or, the flash memory card from which you 'boot' the android/linux from could actually hold a partition which served as a flash drive/storage drive aswell? so effectively it would mean you would require something like a 1gb or 512mb card, splitting that to allow you RAM and ROM space but i cant see why that would be too difficult. it would just be a matter of tricking the linux to thinking the local on-drive storage is its 'root' drive and the default drive to save to and to completely and totally NOT access any of the WM stuff on the flash memory that is hard-soldered onto the handset.
not sure if this helps, just bandying ideas around at the mo!

I see what you mean, but then the card might not be recognised in windows =/
However, denying the operating system access to writing the rom (and store everything in RAM) might work, but all settings would have to be stored on the SD card which could lead to a slow application.
The SDK (with the sample apps) itself is around 100MB, but Methinks that the final OS will be around 30MB (Without any apps)
Expanding on the partition Idea, what about partitioning the ROM itself? This might require a special WM6/5/CE ROM but one flash compared to many (everytime the device boots) could be worth it, and it could get round the setttings loss if we restrict each one to not write over the other?
My leg is getting better thankyou, seems like a severe muscle strain (The doctor said) so i should be back in school tomorrow.... great
i see what you mean by the card not being recognised by windows and offer a simple solution:
have a DEDICATED card for android and a seperate card for storage under WM.
to be completely honest with you, theres people on here spending hundreds and hundreds of pounds to have the latest device (and im one of them) im sure they wouldnt mind spending an extra few pounds for another memory card which would allow amazing functionality without actually jeapordising their current WM install (so they can have an install of WM6 to fall back onto)
what i propose is the following system:
1) MEMORY card formatted and partitioned to allow more or less the same sort of structure of memory/ram as the onboard memory does
2) INSTALL the actual android/linux to the memory card utilising the space as you would the hard-soldered memory on the phone without actually modifying the handset itself in any way whatsoever.
3) THIS method allows people to effectively dual-boot android/WM6/5 without the danger of them actually ruining their WM6 install, effectively using the android/linux platform to play about with whilst having the original WM6 to fall back onto for day-to-day usage.
shouldnt be too difficult to accomplish, im sure a modified bootloader would do the job pretty well, cant see why without the help of Olipro and Pof this cant be done!
LETS GET THE BALL ROLLING!
Seems good, but what, have the SD card for storage and CF for the OS? 'cos you obviously can't have 2 SD cards in the X50v (unless there's a CF-SD card adapter lying around somewhere on the web or on a shelf)
But as far as getting the ball rolling, yeah!!
Work on having the vanilla build of android (one included in the SDK) running before starting from scratch!

another problem would be on getting the bootloader to see the cf card and that maybe a problem, we would need to add one of the slots(sd or cf) to the bootloader and let us choose what os to boot or what memory to boot(sd,cf, or rom mem).
the other way if we don't want to modify anything would be loading a bootloader during winidows mobile.
i hate this time difference
i cant see why you cant actually have the android on the SD card and stick to having the CF card as storage for both WM and Linux
that way, it would mean a sort of 'standardising' for people to port over to other phones which use SD based memory cards.rather than making it bespoke to CF capable devices (of which there arent many!)
Yes, the problems will be a rebuild of the bootloader to recognise both SD + CF cards.
And loading the bootloader under Windows mobile could be good, but you'd then have to terminate WM (which could be a problem)
And which part of the USA do you live in? There's probably an 8 or 9 hour time difference :-(
@dude_stix
well, even so, you'd need both SD + CF storage, which AGAIN could be a problem. But (in my experience) CF is more expensive, and considering Android will take up less space, It seems a more viable option (in my example, a 32MB CF card would be useless if I installed Android on a 2GB SD card and nullified the rest of the space for use (which could happen))
I think the easier option would be to modify the bootloader to look for images on both cards and install on the one with the image on it.
What about drivers etc? Obviously these would be needed for most things.
drivers????
thats all i got but it would not be hard if htc releases its android devices soon so we can get ideas from them. still today linux devices have problems with bluetooth, wifi, backlight, sd, etc...

That's a 6 hour time differance :/
The Drivers being the things (mainly DLL's in WM) that controll the wifi/bluetooth etc.
This is why Linux has problems with them, i think they have to rebuild their own or something, which could pose a problem.
Do you think we should set a website & Forums up, or is it too early at the moment?

Yeah... ...Drivers!!
This will be the hard one...
With WM6 cooked rom it was easy... We could reuse WM5 drivers written specifically for that device (x50v and x51v needed a specific driver for the 2700G chipset).... So if there won't be any Smartphone with such chipset with Android pre-installed it would be very hard to write that drivers from scratch... By the way somewhere I remeber I found a PowerVR driver source code for Linux that could be useful to do the job...

Isn't the drivers' job what the linux kernel is supposed to do? Why don't you go grab the kernel from the gpe/opie project and add the android image to it, partition the sd card with a windows and a linux partition like the other linux guys do, load the ramdisk like they do and see if it works. At least they have a start on the drivers for the Axim.

Hi, I installed android to my touch but now I'd like to go back to window mobile. I haven't been able to figure out how to flash it back to windows... any help?
Thanks
reflash a winmo build.
I'd love to reflash to a winmo build, but i just don't know how.
search. read the wiki's @ the top.
why go back anyway?

Long story short. i'm trying android again to see if the newest build has better battery life. the last build couldn't hold a charge long enough to make it worht while as a phone.
The only way i've ever gotten android to get data after being flashed has been to get it working in windows first and then installing android.
i've read and searched for a step by step on how to do this and i just haven't been fruitful.
just download and flash one of the 6.5 builds....there's a very informative guide on how to
The guides that i see want me to establish an active sync connection to flash the device but I have android installed and i cant' establish an active sync connection. I think thats my major hangup. Is there a way to flash it from the memory card?
not that Im aware of.. my have to RUU back to stock and start over.
look here for sprint rom http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Vogue/
That would be just fine too... i still don't know how to do it. When i run the rom update utility it gives me a connection error.
Edit: I realize that i'm being vague. Let me try to fill in the gaps. I am putting my phone into the bootloader mode, hooking it up to my PC via USB and running the Rom update Utility with a custom rom. The phone has been unlocked so it really shouldn't have any trouble..
What am I doing wrong?

Put your phone in Bootloader Mode by pressing the Camera and Power buttons and then the Reset button all at the same time.
Then make sure you have a radio of 3.4x or above... If not Flash back to a new stock Rom and then follow the threads you were just reading.
If you radio is good go and Download one of the ROMS here on this forum.
Happy Flashing!

How to Flash a Vogue without ActiveSync
How to Flash a Vogue Without ActiveSync
A method so easy my Mother could do it.
Not suggesting there's anything wrong with my mother, just that she's not all that technically oriented.
Here's an easy way to flash your HTC Vogue without using ActiveSync. It would likely be a great method to use if you had many Vogues that all needed to be updated as well. Works great for those not using Windows, as well.
Look around for a Transflash (aka MicroSD) card, one that you can erase, 2GB or less.
Use your Windows machine to make sure it's freshly formatted as FAT32]
Copy the ROM you want to flash to the card.
Rename the file you just copied to VOGUIMG.nbh If you are flashing a different model, you need to be sure you have the right file name for it. I think the pattern is the first 4 letters of the model name with IMG.nbh after it, but if it doesn't work, don't blame me,
Put card in phone.
Enter bootloader mode by holding the CAMERA and POWER buttons, while pressing the RESET button in the little hole in the bottom of the phone. (don't bother to connect it to your computer)
Enjoy a caffinated beverage of your choice, or an alcoholic beverage of your choice, or heck, a nice tall glass of cool water while you wait.
Watch as your phone automagically flashes itself!
Congratulate yourself on a job well done.
This is what I'm going to use from now on for flashing with a Mac or Linux. For those addicted to flashing, you can even take a collection of cards with you. I'm not yet sure if you can have multiple ROMs on one card, and just rename the one you want to flash or not yet, but I'll likely find out soon.
ATTENTION:
Missing any of these will make it NOT WORK:
Card must be normal SD, not SDHC or XDHC. No bigger than 2GB
Card must be formatted with FAT32. They often come formatted FAT16 or plain FAT, and a previously-used card could have just about any format on it -- NTFS. HPFS. HFS+. EXT3 -- Format it right to be sure.
Be sure you have the right name. I've heard that CaSe cOuNtS -- the name above has been cut/pasted from a working reflash card.
There is no #4.
Have fun!

I've had this Sprint Galaxy S II phone for about two or three weeks, and it just updated to 4.0.4. The only problems I am having are these:
1. power saving is set to come on at 50%, but it doesn't. Lately, I have been home and have been able to charge it or happened to look at it when it was just below 50%. If I go into the settings and manually uncheck and check it again, it turns on power saving. Any way to fix this?
2. I've never messed with the SD card yet. The card is the same as my old phone's, so there's stuff on it I can't delete. Anyway, I think they changed the way this connected to PCs because the old image of Andru on the screen is gone. So, now when I connect it, my computer thinks it's a camera. If the icons are in tile view, it won't show you the folder or file names. And it won't let me paste music (only thing I'm trying to do) onto the SD card. Now, FYI, my fiance just reinstalled my OS (XP) because of some computer problems I was having, so maybe there's some XP update I need for this to connect to the PC. If I can connect the card to the computer without the phone, I'll try that, but I don't know how.
I'm not sure about the power saving mode, but I ran into the issue with the sd card. I fixed it by installing the Samsung drivers (which can be found by a quick Google search, or by searching these forums) and turned on mass storage mode. I'm running xp as well and it shows up under removable storage F: & G: in the my computer folder. Hope this helps

How do you turn on mass storage mode? The Sprint guy had me download the drivers, but the device wasn't recognized by the PC when I did. I then got SP 3 for Windows, but I haven't noticed any difference, so I am not sure if there's something else my computer is missing.
When you connect the phone a us icon shows in the status bar, swipe down and touch the notification then it will allow you to turn it on.

I called Sprint today because I was still having this issue with the SD card, and they told me that since I was using Windows XP, I would never be able to see the SD card because it was too old an OS. I can't find anything online I should download, so I thought I'd check here again to see if there was a way around this. I figured if anyone would know, it would be the people on this forum.
P.S. I am still having the power saving mode issue but forgot to ask them about that.

lolwat? XP may be old, but not old enough to still support USB mass.
ICS uses a new USB setup for connecting using MTP, and another older mode I don't remember the letters for offhand. XP should read MTP but not the other, but you typically need Samsung drivers for either. Market has an app, https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=in.zatta.USB_switch USB Switcher that will change the USB mode from MTP to mass, after rebooting your phone. Works on my E4GT, so presumably it might for yours. Hope that helps.
Edit: It is possible though for certain size cards to not be read by XP depending on certain settings or hardware, I dunno if that's what they meant by that, I assumed you meant connecting to the card via USB on the phone. If I got that wrong my apologies, hope this helps regardless.
I'm not sure how big my SD card is as the fiance gave it to me, and I don't recall. He is the computer expert around here, so I don't pay much attention to what he does to the computers, etc. Yes, dear, whatever you say dear. Dual core, 80 Gig, micro SD card reader...if he wants me to use it, I trust that it's good. He actually told me that he bought extra licenses for Win 7, so we could install it on my computer, but I am not a fan of how Win 7 programs are organized differently from their older versions. (I may be thinking of 2010 Office Suite and just lumping that in with 7). So, I told him maybe in two years I'd upgrade to 7. For now I'll just transfer the files between two computers with a flash drive.
I KNEW this was an ICS thing. Even though I had the phone for less than a month before the update and didn't remember plugging it into the computer before then. My phone does prompt file transfer for MTP and whatever acronym they use for pictures. And I'm like, fine, I'll deal with that, but when I try to use the programs suggested to transfer files, the programs freeze or don't recognize the phone as a device plugged in. It's a crapshoot. And I figure if they went through all the trouble of doing this media/photo file transfer thing for XP, why didn't they just use a little more effort to make the SD card contents visible?
So...unless a third party develops something that will provide SD card content viewing and editing, I will just go the long route and move files from my PC to a flash drive to the Win 7 PC to the phone.
I'm having issues that I cannot be sure if its affected by Googles dropped support of writing to externalSD or not.
When I hook my phone up to the laptop via USB I do this to transfer music to the micro externalSD, which is 64GB card, into my Music folder. The first thing I do is make a new folder on it to label the folder by band name. When I do that it just sits there idling and won't change names from New Folder to a band name folder. Same thing happened when I tested another way by just dropping a music file on it. It just acts busy and never processes the transfer.
The only way I've gotten it to work was taking the micro externalSD card out of the slot of the phone and putting it into the bigger card then insert it into the laptop and do my work that way. It works that way but I can't tell if its that KitKat issue that's affecting it or its something else.
Has anybody been transferring files via USB or doing what I do?

If you use the Samsung Kies application, it works. At least it works for me using Kies. Haven't tried just using the file explorer.
The external SD restriction is only from within the OS itself. It only affects third-party file managers (or any app trying to modify files on the external sd). Doing anything on a computer should work. Something is wrong with your phone.
I've had this happen when my devices' OS gets messed up. Factory reset (or reflash when I was using custom roms) usually fixes it. I don't know the details, but something with the way the phone presents its storage to the computer gets messed up.
I only hit the idle if my phone screen is off, if I keep it awake it writes like a charm

Yeah and file transfers will slow to 0kb/s and eventually (after a long time of waiting) the computer will say something about the device not being found. Right?
This is what I was saying. As long as you aren't running a custom rom (which you can't on the n910a), then a factory reset SHOULD fix it.

Yeah, I just keep my phone awake though, not really interested in factory reset, lol, maybe the op will though, I just don't transfer enough stuff

Sorry, thought you WERE the OP. Lol
Didn't realize you were a different person.
If it works for you then do what you're doing. If it gets worse or something, try my suggestion though. It should fix it, but yeah, factory resets can be annoying.

Yeah titanium backup would make it a bit nicer, an icloud style backup would be a godsend
I'm the OP of this thread, lol. Anyways. Did a couple things to test out ideas.
One... Kies... I hate it. Sorry asjshenry. Thanks for the advice though.
Two... tried a different Samsung USB. Same issue.
Three... I may have done something wrong last time with this but when I dragged and dropped a file into the micro externalSD via USB it worked fine. No idling or freeze up. I stated it did this the first time I tested it but I may have done something different than I thought I did.
Four... while still using a different USB I went ahead and tried to create a folder and name it. It just hung there idling.
I guess my last resort is factory reset. I'd like to think it isn't the phone but maybe Windows 8.1 just not playing nicely with the Note 4. A lot of weird things have happened on 8.1 including my Bluetooth mouse not working anymore 4 days after I bought it. It stopped working after Windows pushed an update. Not really sure but I have noticed odd behaviors from 8.1.
I'll try factory reset tomorrow and report back. If its the same issue still then its got to be something with Windows.
OK so I finally got around to factory reset and tried again. Still having same issues. There must be some kind of syncing error with Windows 8.1 or something. I don't get how it will allow me to drop a file in (i.e. a song) without issues but it will not allow me to create a folder and name it.
Only way I can do this is by taking out the micro SD card and put it in the bigger card and then into the laptop.
It gets annoying doing it that way because of having to take the case off then back door then the card and then put everything back together again.

Sorry reset didn't work. I agree, it might be Windows 8. I'm still on 7, so can't any further (if there is something that can be done).

It must be a syncing issue then. I've been trying to track down similar issues but haven't found anything I was looking for. Have you noticed that the more 8.1 gets updated the more there are problems? I'll keep looking till I find what the issue is.

Additional updates haven't worsened or fixed the problem for me, also forgot to mention that the size of the card plays no effect on solving the issue I've tested it on a 32gb and a 128gb card. Let me know if you come up with a fix

If you have 2 laptops or PC could you test this problem on a different one and see if the problem persist? I actually have 2 laptops but the screen on the older one got fried so I have no way or seeing if its a persisting problem.
I will also make some time tomorrow and see if I can speak to a geek squad rep or Microsoft rep online and see if they have any suggestions. I'll have to speak to them about other problems that I see coming up with each updates they push out too.
If I can't get anywhere with fixing all these problems then I will be converting the laptop fully to a Linux OS of my choice. I'm not liking anything at all with windows 8.1 and this laptop is barely a year old.
Also its interesting that you said you had the same issue with the S3. I have the S3 too here before I got the Note 4. I didn't see this problem with the S3 on this laptop and it has been awhile since I had the S3 hooked up to that laptop to transfer music over. That's what is leading me to think that an update broke stuff.
I'll update this tomorrow if I get anywhere.

Sorry it took so long to reply, I took the 5.0.1 update recently and tried creating and renaming a folder on my note 4 using my windows 8.1 machine, I got the same result, folder was created but windows explorer hung and crashed during renaming the folder. I tried it again on my windows 7 machine and it successfully created and renamed the folder without any hiccups. also its worth to mention that i do not have usb debugging enabled, and every time I connect my phone to the windows 8.1 machine I get a usb connected sound and then a second later I get a usb disconnected sound and then the windows explorer window showing my phone and external SD

Thank you. That confirms my suspicion that it is within Windows 8.1. Debugging is not needed for anything.
I had to dig deep to figure out the problem, and according to an article some updates plus components become corrupted without our knowledge. Only way we know something is wrong is one thing after another stops working (i.e. my Bluetooth mouse, writing to external SD, etc).
There is a fix for it as long as it can complete it thoroughly. If not then a fresh install of 8.1 is your only last resort.
This is what I did from this link...
http://www.eightforums.com/3407-sfc-scannow-command-run-windows-8-a.html
Right click on command prompt to grant Administration rights. Click ok. Command prompt will open. Run this...
sfc /scannow
Wait for it to fully scan.
Mine said it couldn't fix all problems. I had to go to Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /Restore health link...
http://www.eightforums.com/26512-dism-fixing-component-store-corruption-windows-8-a-8.html
This will take awhile and look like its hung up at 20% but let it finish.
My results were...
Error: 0x800f0906
The source files could not be downloaded. Use the "source" option to specify the location of the files that are required to restore the feature. For more information on specifying a source location, see http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=243007
Had to go to that link and was lost on what to do. So I read through the forums for similar error code by others and the author recommended to do a refresh of Windows or do a complete reinstall of Windows to correct the problem and run sfc /scannow to confirm all is good after reinstallation.
This leads me to believe several updates became corrupted and a lack of a component store. I have no clue how that broke and it's all on Microsoft for that mess.
My last resort is now to reinstall a fresh copy of Windows 8.1 to correct all issues. It's going to be a pain in the are with all that stuff I have saved on the laptop and backing up everything.
Check out those links and run them to see if your stuff gets corrected. You may have better luck than I did and if you do then reboot after all that and test the external SD issue.

I ran sfc /scannow and it failed verification and didn't fix anything, so then i ran dism as you said however I used a bat file I had instead, and it fixed whatever sfc was complaining about. If you want to try it copy this into a notepad and save it as a .bat file and run as admin
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup
pause
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
pause
SFC /scannow
pause
since sfc passed I ran windows update and took all the important and optional updates, restarted and ran sfc again and it passed again. I plugged in my phone and created a folder and tried to rename it and as always explorer hangs again, and crashes, without unplugging my phone I go back to where I created the folder and tried to rename it and it works, problem is if you unplug, explorer will hang and crash first every time before working, also this method doesn't always work, for example sometimes external sd disappears from the list, other times when you click on it, it brings you into phone sd instead of external, and lastly another bug I've noticed is that the language changes after a crash on the list of available memory, there were a couple of instances where everything was replaced with Chinese or Japanese characters. I hope this was helpful but I doubt this problem could be fixed, unless windows 10 fixes it we're going to have to deal with it
