Hi,
i had cyanogen 7 on my phone, and did one of the noob's mistakes of installing the 2ndinit (where the bootmenu is already installed).
it didnt even seem to install it (it said "failed"), but then i rebooted, and there you go- boot loop.
so i was calm since i've already faced boot loop with another defy, i started flashing an SBF using RSD lite 4.9.
every service flash i tried didnt work, it either-
said "please manually reboot the phone"- followed by a boot loop,
or
said "PASS", but then there was black screen with no booloader option.
then i moved to RSD lite 5, then 5.3.1- nothing works...
i read all the boot loop related threads in the defy, but i cant see anyone with the same problem of boot looping no matter which rom and which RSD lite version...
please help me!
Go to stock recovery after the sbf and wipe data/cache. With the Phone off press VOLUME DOWN then, while still pressed, power up the phone and leave VOL key pressed until you see a Yellow triangle, once you see this you are in Recovery now press Vol Up and Vol Down at the same time (if you are in Froyo) and the menu will appear.
Edit:
Don't worry about the please manually reboot the phone instead of PASS. Happens a lot.
Also, I send a PM to total defy guide to add this.
Updated the Guide
I actually got this same issue myself.
Found the culprit was the SD Card, if you dont do a full wipe (Data/Cache) using Stock Recovery some files remain on the SD Card that prevents Android from booting correctly.
that makes sense,
thank you so much for the quick response!
the thing is currently the only response i'm getting from the phone is the white led when connecting to the PC, meaning vol up,down, or power don't do anything...
I, myself am in a loop, tried so many SBF, some brought me to the not responding state, and some to the boot loop state.
i'm currently stuck in the "not responding" state,
so i'll try to get back to the boot loop state and follow your directions.
i didn't know i can reach the stock recovery that way...
tell me- i have another defy, do you think i can use it's SD card in this defy or is it too risky...?
Just put your defy in your pc. If the let is white let it rest for a while so you won't run out of power when you flash. then open rsd lite and flash a froyo sbf (I hope you didn't flash an 2.3.x gingerbread sbf). Let the phone power up for +- 10 min. If it isn't powered up by then, or you see the boot animation then black and again the animation, you have to wipe data and cache in stock recovery.
This isn't CWM recovery that is used to install CM. Only use this recovery for this occasion. If you have flashed an 2.3.x sbf, you will only see the motorola sign when you power up your phone and the wipe won't helpe. Then go to the defy beginners guide of Zephyrot and follow the instructions there.
mmm, it does look like you flashed a Full Gingerbread SBF.
If any Eclair/Froyo SBF is giving you blackscreens even after a fullwipe with stock recovery, after a full Stock SBF flash; is because you are probably on CG v5, meaning you flashed a Gingerbread SBF .
If there is no way for you to recover the phone using Froyo/Eclair SBFs, go to the Guide and search the part on how to Downgrade from Official GB to a Froyo rom, and then how to go from there to CM7.
Last part just got added,
Good luck
i did try gigerbread, and i think from there on it got worse...
I cant reach stock recovery now since the phone is not responding...
isnt there any way to wipe using the RSD lite or maybe some other program which will recognize my device...?
ADB of course does not see it...
the thing is the RSD keeps saying "PASS" each time, so i unplug it, but then it wont power up...
are you saying i should leave it plugged for a while although the RSD says it's complete, or do you think i whould unplug it, and hold the power button for a long time...?
Man, if you tried Gingerbread, you dont have many options.
Please read the Guide completely before running out of battery, and then do the last part that explains how to recover your problem.
I'm a woman, but that's ok
so i've followed your instructions from 1 to 9,
last step was deleting the data and cache, then rebooting (using "reboot system now" in the bootmenu),
but it keeps going back to the bootmenu...
I don't want to do any foolish mistakes now, so i'll wait for you reply-
can i install the MIUI zip already...? is it safe?
i'm shutting down the phone now, and waiting for you...
you have no idea how much you've helped until now,
thanks!
in bootmenu go to boot-->then choose either 2nd init or stock cant remember but one of them should boot and not get stuck

Oops! sorry had no idea!
It defaults to Bootmenu unless you specify it not to do so.
In bootmenu you should have an option to either make 2nd-init or Stock your default Boot.
Choose 2nd-init and reboot, you should be good to go
First boot into normal Froyo charge battery to 100% and then try MIUI.
I dont know if it will work tho! I added yesterday a new Part to the Guide to install CM7 after a full GB SBF has been flashed.
Its really really hard to kill a Defy, so dont worry too much if you run out of battery there's a McGyver way to charge it too.
I had the eternal bootloop issue as well, I just fixed doing all wipes necessary before installing any kind of rom
well, i didnt want to wait, since i was afraid leaving it in bootmenu would run the battery out, and taking the battery out was a risk too...
so i decided to flash the MIUI before even booting into the froyo i just flashed (the one using the fixed SBF you posted...)
and it worked, and i'm happy with my beautifull rom
oh about the battery charging- i have 2 defys, so no Mcgyver for me...
anyway, Zephyrot, i liked your guide,
i think it's very well written,
i only have one question for future knowledge-
in the state of having the Eclair V5, why is it impossible to flash the MIUI/CM7 straight from that point...?
thanks again,
Elinor.

Well, I first thought it would work, but it doesnt. Another user had the issue and he got stuck into bootloop after installing CM7 zip. It has to do with 2nd-init and the way you have to trick the phone to load an Eclair/Froyo Android while having a V5 CG.
It seems it works only with the goAPK Recovery or the old 1.4.2 2nd-Init.
now google apps not responding
Hi again,
after problem was solved, i installed some applications, and at some point, all google applications seemed to stop working, including the market.
for example when hitting settings->accounts, it says: "the application settings (process com.android.settings) has stopped unexpectedly. please try again"
so i started over with the full SBF in your tutorial (wiped data, cache, dalvik)
and even with this rom, you can't use any google apps...
i've been searching for threads on this issue, but all i could find was "do factory reset", which i did, and it didn't help...
can you think of what could cause this?
it seems like some basic files are missing...
thanks!
Hello all,
I'm sorry if this is the wrong place to post, but I thought I'd give it a try.
I own a Desire myself and the rooting / flashing a new ROM process was pretty easy so I thought I can help a friend out and put a custom ROM on his new Motorola Defy. Turns out I sucked at it. *ahem*
Right, the problem is as follows:
I got the brand new device, used SuperOneClick to root it, tried ROM Manager to install ClockworkMod CWM and it said Defy isnt supported in ROM Manager. So I google'd and it came up with this [german] (not allowed to post links), which basically gave me CWM.zip with an apk in it, which installed "System Recovery" and gave me the option to "Install System Recovery" and Reboot into Recovery - successfully bootet into CWM 2.5.1.8 , alright.
I did a nandroid backup and then wiped everything, selected the ROM on the sdcard to install MIUI 1.9.9 ROM, which worked fine. After it finished installing, I chose reboot system now.
Now what happens is:
I try to boot normally: I Only get the Motorola logo on screen and nothing ever happens
I boot into recovery like I used to know (Power + VolDown), I get a screen with a yellow exclamation mark and the android robot on it. Figured out that both volume keys take me to Android System Recovery Utility. I wiped everything again, that didn't help. I tried giving it the CWM.zip as an update.zip but it refuses that because it's apparently not properly signed. I can't do anything else in there. It also gives me a couple of errors "E: Can't moint CACHE:recovery/command" (/caller, /log)
Please, can anybody help me out? It seems I can't boot any ROM from it right now, nor do I know how to get CWM back in to at least even restore the nandroid backup (which I still have).
I would love to, at the end of the day, have a rooted device with CWM running and MIUI 1.9.9. If that doesn't work, at least can I restore the CWM backup somehow to have to stock ROM running?
I would really appreciate any help very much and realize I may be in over my head, it just seemed too easy on the Desire I previously used. Thanks a lot!
I recently got a defy and the person i got it from said it was rooted already. Super User was present but he didn't have Rom Manager, I went to the market and downloaded it. when I try to boot into recovery it hangs on the Triangle screen. I pulled Bat, and tried to boot into recovery and using rom manager and got the same thing. I have sdk and adb tools already loaded on my computer but I am still extremely new to all of this. I tried to root again with super 1 click but that doesn't work. Is there another way of rooting, Even if its more difficult I dont mind I just want to get this figured out. Thanks in advance
It probably is rooted. The thing is, we have a locket bootloader so default recovery can't be changed. You can install 2nt init. You will have to reboot and next reboot again. There are guides it you are ensure. It's an app in the market. Next go to rom manager, select install => defy => already installed cmw. And afterwards you can use it.
Read through the all-in-beginners-guide and you will find all answers.
You should press both Vol UP and Vol DOWN at the same time on the triangle screen to acess the recovery menu

hey if you are stuck follow this thread to install CM7 on your defy

Hello All,
I recently rooted my EVO3D using the HTCDEV method because the bootloader was version 1.5.
Here are the steps I followed to root (sorry for the copy and past but I want to be as detailed as possible)
Files Used
su 2.3.6.3
TWRP Recovery
Steps Taken:
1)Take both the su.zip and recovery.img files and put them in your sdk tools folder.
2)Now do the following in ur command prompt, hitting enter after each command.
3)Code:adb push recovery.img /sdcard/And,
4)Code:adb push su-2.3.6.3.zip /sdcard/Then,
5)Code:adb reboot bootloaderUr phone will go to fastboot and should look like the after picture above. Now you can flash the twrp recovery, so do,
6)Code:fastboot flash recovery recovery.imgIt will ouput something like this,
7)Code:sending 'recovery' <5068 KB>... OKAY////writing 'recovery'... OKAY///finished. total time: 11.355sNow you have twrp recovery, so you can navigate to it. On ur phone, use the power button to pick bootloader, then scroll down to recovery and pick that. You will then be booted into recovery.
8)Here you can pick "install zip" and then pick the "su-2.3.6.3.zip"
It will flash, the you can pick "back to main menu", then "reboot system now"
9)You will boot back up and have working Superuser. I have had no trouble with Titanium Backup, Root Explorer, Quick Boot or any other app that requires root. Before you do too much, it would be good to go back to recovery and do a Nandroid backup. Always best to get one ready before you start modding anything.
All of this worked fine, and the phone was "unlocked."
Then, I flashed the most recent version of CleanRom (2.7)
Again, the phone worked fine, battery life was a little crappy.
I decided to flash Ziggy's kernel.I flashed the kernel simply by putting on the SD card, and then rebooting into recovery. This worked fine as well, but I noticed some of the buttons for example the menu popups displayed volume where it should have said more, or bluetooth options where it should have said preferences. so this is where the trouble started, I downloaded kernel manager, and flashed silverneedle through that program. Now, I am stuck at the White HTC Splash screen bootloop. The phone turns on and after 15 seconds reboots, and reboots, and reboots.
What Ive attempted:
I have done countless wipes and clears of the dalvik cache and cache
ive formatted the system and the date sections (advanced menu in twrp)
ive reflashed the rom after wiping countless times
ive tried flashing different kernels in recovery to no avail
factory reset and wipe havent helped
im not concerned losing the contents of the SD card
I need help because I already had two phone claims in the past 11 months, and if I claim another lost phone I will lose insurance for life with Asurion (sprint)
anytips or help would be greatly appreciated
i can provide any additional info
Similar situation, Not sure if you've already solved the problem but I'm going to copy paste my solution from another thread...
Hi, I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask but this is a preety derp question. I've gone across the internet and tried a lot of reflashing to repair my sort of "bricked" evo. What happened, was that I had a evo 3d s-on htc bootloader unlocked, with custom recovery -clockwork..anyways I had flashed the leedroid 3d 4.0 rom and It worked the only problem was my wifi, so i attempted to flash another kernel onto it, but I had accidently flashed "Rcmix" kernel which I later found out was cdma =.=. so now my phone keeps rebooting at the htc screen, it would just load up with the green htc letters, then after 10 seconds or so it'd reboot, and then begin the process again. I can boot into bootloader and recovery but whatever I flash doesn't seem to work including restoring my backups...and then the battery died so i couldn't even charge it or go in. But i managed to work out I could load into bootloader from the CMD and the furthest i've gotten to is to have the bootloader show FASTBOOT USB. SO I must be getting somewhere...? I did read that i had to load from the cmd and not just from power+vol down..but I'd appreciate any help towards restoring my phone to the way it is or at least before i flashed the rcmix.
Just a note tho I've tried factory resetting but all i get is that it loads into recovery at the bootloader options i dont get "clear storage" as an option and "restore to factory settings" and what not just boots me into recovery agian.
EDIT:
I Managed to fix the phoneeee!!!..just for future preferences and anyone else who has this problem...
I followed bits and piece of IL DUCE's advice to izzy spun, the important part was booting the recovery from cmd. I wasn't able to "erase recovery" But I tried just booting it,
First I would remove the battery,
Put it back in,
Plug the usb cable in
1. Type command, from your Adb/fasboot folder, "adb reboot-bootloader"
2. After that I made sure my bootloader said "Fastboot USB", and then I issued the command, "fastboot boot cwm-4.0.1.4-shooteru.img" or with whatever recovery you had..
3. From there I restored from my backups my original rom. Rebooting, and fixed.
--- and It worked. At the time I was on clock work recovery, i only had the Revolutionary recovery img. Cwm-4.0.14.-shooteru.img to be exact,
after going in there I just cleared the cache and davlik and then, proceeded to restore my backups (I'm not sure if it would've worked if I had re-flashed the leedroid or a custom rom)
and then I simply rebooted the phone, and it got back into my phones original state before leedroid (as I had Only backedup before then)....
Apologies for the lengthly post, but I guess reading does help, but I've been going nuts before I managed to fix this. Just thought I'd leave this post incase someone were to need this.
Same problem
Hi there. I just recently joined so excuse my noobness but i have a similar problem. I recently just rooted my evo 3d sprint with the the boot 1.5 and everything went well. I decided i wanted to overclock my phone so i followed zeemaxs way. Before going into the overclock procedure i decided to do the the RCMIX Evo 3d kernel v. 2.2.3 first so i would have better results when done with the overclock procedure.I bootup the kernel through the recovery mode on the phone butit failed to load so i just reeboted. After that my wifi and 4g stopped working. So i downloaded an app on the market called "flash image GUI" which lets me flash the kernels through the app. I flashed the RCMIX kernel and rebooted and now im stuck ima boot loop. I COULD just go back and back up to my old rom and settings etc...........but the problem is i dintmake any kind of back up or recovery i think. I know i know im stupid and an idiot but i just sort of panicked n ended up with this. If anyone can help please tell me.I do not want to pay for a new phone at full price. PLEASE HELP THIS POOR NOOB!!!!! X(

What your going to have to do is flash the original kernel you started with. thats why your in a bootloop
Similar problem
Hi everyone!
I have a kind of similar problem, so I won't post it in a new thread.
Yesterday I rooted my phone following this guide: androidforums.com/evo-3d-all-things-root/494212-complete-newbies-guide-rooting-flashing-evo-3d-roms-kernels-using-fastboot . html (i am not allowed to post links to prevent spam).
I unlocked it with htcdev and installed a custom ROM without getting any errors. After restarting the phone, it got into a boot loop; it showed the starting animations of htc and the ROM and then shut down again.
Here some more information:
-Evo 3d Europe gsm
-hboot 1.5
-s-on
-image version 3.28.401
-installed ROMs using clockworkrecoverymod (as proposed in guide)
I have tried these ROMs (all leading to boot loop):
ICS NonSense
Cyanogen Mod 10 – DisarmedToaster (v. 1.4 and 1.5)
Jelly Bean 3d (by Ubuntuz)
SAD 2.1 DEsenseX
I installed the ROMs by doing:
Connect device via usb > flash boot.img via fastboot (from pc) > clear Cashe/UserData/DalvikVM > install rom.zip from sdcard > reboot
I really don't know what to try
Any ideas how I could install a running Android OS are highly appreciated.
Thx for any help
Problem solved!
Ok, I solved the problem by simply relocking the phone and installing the stock ROM with the RUU.exe
RUU.exe
I'm glad someone else mentioned Relocking before running the RUU. I've read several posts be others that have actually stated that Relocking wasn't necessary but in order for the RUU to take you have to Relock. IF you get a chance check out CoolICS Rom and MeanRom both are pretty good.
Thanks all for the help, had to revisit this issue today.
Hi,
I've got a HTC Wildfire S, rooted and S-OFF.
But it's stuck in bootloop, I messed with the system/apps folder...
So now it's pretty much messed up.
Didn't install ROM-manager, I know it was kinda stupid.
How can I reïnstall a custom ROM?
Can anyone help me?
Go into recovery and flash from there, or if you backed-up then restore the rom. If you don't have any roms then you can also mount your sd card from CWM recovery. If you don't have any custom recovery then you'll have to flash it through fastboot. I would tell you the process but I'm really busy right now, but I'm sure someone will explain it to you.
Hi, thanks anyway... hopefully some other kind guy can help me
I don't have any custom recovery, only a ROM which I want to flash on to the device...

Don't install custom ROM's from Rom Manager's Download list. None of them are for Wildfire S.
Install CWM Recovery either through Hboot as a PG76IMG.zip or using Eoghan2t7's Windoze tool.
From there you should make a backup of your working ROM before trying any new ones in case of times like this...
Hi,
yes if I install the CWM recovery... can I then install my ROM? It's just a slightly modified Wildfire S Stock Rom...
And, I'm sorry to ask... But how do you install CWM through the boot menu?

Download that and connect your WFS to your PC, follow the steps which are quite easy. Then boot into recovery (volume down + power button, choose recovery by the volume buttons and power button), then choose install zip from SD and you can install the zip file (the rom) by selecting that file.
Let me know if this works
I have the same problem when using OC ROMs.
What am I doing wrong?
Now it's loading for ages or simply stuck in the bootscreen.
I too have the same problem when using OC ROMs. Why?
Hi, thanks for the help!
But I'm not quiet through yet... so I downloaded the WFS Manager, then I connected up my phone to the pc.
It was switched on, and just doing the bootloop again, showing the "Quietly Brilliant" sign over and over again.
And then I ran the tool, and it said "Please connect up your device" after I ticked on the first option ("Root And Install Recovery").
I guess this is because the WFS was bootlooping, and so the pc didn't recognise it. I also tried with the HBOOT menu on, but still the pc didn't recognise my phone. Is there anything I did wrong?
My pc (Windows 7 Ultimate x64), showed a popup saying there couldn't be found any driver for "Android 1.0". However it did work before the bootloo
If you have a card reader, or a phone that can take your SD card, then just remove your SD card, place it in an SD card reader or a device which can take your SD card, plug that device into your PC, place the ROM you want to flash onto the SD card, place your SD card back into your Wildfire, boot into recovery and flash the ROM from there.
I had a similar situation where I had an invalid xxxxIMG.zip file on the root of my SD card and a ROM that kept rebooting my device. Naturally, I started panicking, but when I got myself together, I just realized I could remove my SD card and then go into recovery, then reinsert my card and flash a working ROM.
Hope this works for you
Hi, thanks for the help. But I don't think you fully understand my problem.
So I have a stock ROM, rooted. And I messed with the system/app folder.
Now it's stuck into bootloop.
What does recovery mean? is it the menu entry in the HBOOT menu?
Because if I go to "recovery" and click it, after a few seconds I get a phone icon with a red triangle above it.
I tried putting the PG76IMG.zip file on the root of my SD card, but then in the HBOOT Menu, I get the message:
"CID incorrect !
Update Fail!
Press <POWER> to reboot."
What do I have to do?
find the cwm recovery thread and download the PG76IMG.zip then copy it to your sdcard then reboot to hboot. when it asks you if you want to flash recovry press volume up. then when finish instead of rebooting take out your battery. wait for 25 secs reinsert it then boot to hboot then choose recovery see new ui instead of the old one.

here you go forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1213229
Hi, when I do what you say I get the error:
"CID incorrect!
Update Fail!
Press <POWER> to reboot."
This is my course of actions:
I download the PG76IMG.zip file from the CWM recovery thread.
I place it in the root of my SD-card.
I start my phone pressing the volume-down button.
It automatically finds the .zip file and tries to update, but then I get the error.
What should I do?
I got what you were trying to say, I just didn't realize you had no recovery installed. I had the same error message pop up when I tried to install the recovery. I think it had something to do with the hboot being newer than something, something, blah, blah, bliddity-blah.
Anywho, I think I had the recovery installed along with the root using SuperTool.exe, but that won't work for you, since you obviously can't boot up, so you can't connect to the PC. All I can remember is I had some sort of app on my PC that allowed me to push the CWM Recovery without going through all that hboot stuff, since the S-ON wouldn't let me install PG76IMG.zip. Again, this is useless to you
My best advice is to try another PG76IMG.zip file and just keep trying until you find one that'll work, which you'll place onto your SD card from another device, of course.
EDIT: Link to where I got CWM Recovery from.
In this post there's an auto-installer that I used to flash it onto my device.
The reason you are having bootloop problems with OC roms is because your phone doesn't support OC. Don't worry though it's not just you, even my phone doesn't support OC. The best ROM to go with right now is Alquez's CM7, but I'm sure other developers will make non-OC roms.
Hi, THANKS!
I used the auto installer, and now I have the CWM recovery!
Can someone tell me now which options I should use to install the new ROM?
Maybe an advice of which ROM would be the best one?
I'd like something fast and stable, it would be handy to have one which doesn't have any stock apps installed with it...
I'd go with Jikantaru's ROM, if I wanted a more Sense-ish experience (which I, personally, don't). It does away with the bloatware, but it keeps Sense UI. I couldn't use this one, since my SD card is only 2 gigs and I can't partition it correctly :\
Therefore, my pick would be Cyanogenmod 7, which gives you a pure Android experience (no trace of HTC's bloatware, spyware or crapware). It takes away everything you don't need or most likely don't use and keeps it all clean and speedy, since there's no Sense, MotoBlur, TouchWiz or any other company-created user interface, leaving you to run everything right on top of the Android system. However, I've had some trouble with this one. First I had no mobile data connection or WiFi, and when I finally fixed that problem, I noticed I had no phone app -.-
So, now I'm using m1ndh4x8r's ROM, and I'm pleased enough with it. It lets me overclock and stuff, though I fear I might have effed something up while reverting to it from my non-fully-working CM7 flash, and now I can't install most apps :\
Now I'm pretty much waiting for a fully-operational CM7 build to come out so I can finally use my phone's full potential.
white htc screen
Hey hey =)
I installed the cm7 by alquez (already tried the RC and the nightly build) and I'm stuck at a white boot screen - I don't know if this is the boot loop error - I only see the green HTC sign with white background
Yesterday, I unlocked the phone, rooted it and today, I installed the CWM and from there, resetted the phone, data, and installed the zip.
Now, the white screen doesnt go away, even after 15min or so
Is there a thing i'm missing?
Thanks in advance!

Wipe all data and cache including dalvik from within clockwork mod
ok, shall I also format boot?
because I read it's pretty nasty deleting it if you don't install a new one, is that right? ^^
Dunno what has changed but thank you for your tip, it worked now!! =)
PS: didnt format boot ;-)
