Hi. Has anyone used headphone amplifiers with the SGS2? Has it improved sound quality? Not just volume as well. I'm considering buying the FiiO E5.
I actually have the E5 and it really does improve audio quality. I won't give you any of the linguistic crap that tells you nothing. Simply put, it makes the mid and high range more crisp and clear. It is espcially noticeable if you listen to female vocals. There is a super tiny amount of increased static with the amp on maximum volume, but you will not hear it unless you turn off all audio and really try hard to hear it in a quiet environment. As always, garbage in, garbage out. Take advantage of the phone's ability to play lossless FLAC.
I'm thinking about getting another E5 for my SGS2 since the one in this pic is effectively welded to my Sansa Fuze.
I got my E5 from dealextreme before and so far I've never been disappointed by anything I've bought from there. It's free international shipping so the price you see is what you pay.

Can it used with the headset ( ie. does the mic fn remain intact) ?
Yes. The amplifier has a 3.5mm input and output. The E5 also comes with 2 auxiliary cables so you don't need to buy additional cables.
Well unless the sgs2 gets some sort of line out output, whatever audio they comes out of it still has to be progressed through that crappy yamaha dac.
What we need is a line out adaptor if you truly want to make an amp worth its weight

True say. I'm wondering if the HDMI out provides line out. I don't think an MHL adapter would work though. I've never seen micro USB to 3.5mm jack either. Then again, if you're really worried about audio quality then you wouldn't be using the phone as a quality music device anyway.

Lol. Line-out bypasses the AMP section of the phone's SOC, meaning you will get output DIRECTLY from that "crappy" DAC.
Truth be known, someone needs to work on digital out, using that OTG port so we can use our OWN external DACs, but it seems that this might NOT be possible before Ice Cream comes along (usb audio).

Sounds like it's worth the plunge. It's not a great cost anyway. I wonder how well it'd work with a phone though. Think the sound would vary depending on the device you're using. Hopefully they will make a USB solution like the poster above mentioned.

I would LOVE that, although I am satisfied with the SQ of Poweramp via my custom IEMs, I wouldn't mind hooking it up to an amp via line out, or digital out to my Alien DIY dac.
If only Samsung kept the Wolfson Dac on the S2... how dare they change it..

You know, if you've tried using the stock player, you'll find that it gives you way superior output than Poweramp. Unless you're using some $5 earbuds.
Heck, the difference is even audible on $5 earbuds, or even apple stock earbuds.

But how do you get the stock player (I'm assuming your talking about the "Music" app?) to play ALL songs? I've got a few gigs worth of music and I want to get it to play them all in a random order but when I try to create a playlist of all of them I get told it can't add any more songs....?
And i'd love to find a way to boost the volume properly, I have the stock earbuds but with the Media volume up max I can't hear them very well over my exhaust Damn regulators, why do we have to live in a "Nanny state" world?

volume + works perfectly for me at +3 and good quality equalizer.
has made a big difference for both stock (rock equalizer) and poweramp (smiley face equalizer setting).
do note there are seperate settings for headphones and phone speakers on volume +
as the guy above mentioned, the stock music player is quite good. poweramp beats it by a tad if you fiddle with settings, but really for something free you get good sound on the music player.
of course the first thing to do is get a good pair of iem's that are impedance matched to the sgs2. my woodees in-ear(16ohm) sound fabolous on my ipod but sound only average on my sgs2. but my koss portapros (60 ohm) sound great on my ipod(not as good as the woodees), but is excellent on my sgs2
Sorry, to didn't realise Volume+ was an app!! I thought you were being a bit of a muppet by saying use Volume and an App to boost heheh .... sorry! My mistake.
Just downloaded Volume+ and set the headphones to max and boosted to max, lots louder now and should do the trick!.... there is a down side to this though, I won't hear my exhaust popping and burbling on the overrun anymore

I don't know if you guys have noticed, but the audio through the headphone jack has massive noise. Its maddening when listening to music quietly. Worst I've ever heard on a portable device, although the audio quality is pretty decent. What we need to fix this is control over the headphone amplifier (voodoo sound offers this on other devices fingers crossed) to lower the level and reduce noise. SO my question is, does anyone know how to lower the headphone amplifier volume with a hack? We can also use this thread to beg supercurio to support our usa versions with voodoo sound
On a related note, if anyone wants to list what eq program they use that could be interesting. They all suck in my opinion. The one CM uses is pretty good, so I'm looking forward to that.
Edit: here is the answer to the problem. Lower the app volume using this https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.teamkang.fauxsound
I was going to retire my nexus S with voodoo(and get the SG3-have the 32 GB pre order) until the info came out about the difference between the US version and International in regards to audio. Disturbing to learn about the hiss. The US version has basically the same hardware, audio wise as the HTC Evo LTE. Certainly nothing to brag about unless anyone has info to the contrary. Waiting for voodoo may be a long time.
My nexus S is absolutely quiet between tracks, no hiss, pops.

I know I had the nexus s too. I'm not exaggerating about the hiss. The amp is way too high. I think I'll see a significant improvement with reduced amp volume. Just need to figure out how.
HOXL isn't great in this area either.

Indeed, I have the same problem on my unit and attribute it to the analog gain that is too high. I'm also looking for a way to turn down the headphone amplifier. Note that I also have an HTC One XL which uses the same audio hardware. On that phone, the amplifier isn't turned up as much (overall volume is lower), and the hiss is lower, though still perceptible.
However, I've found a thread with info that suggests that not all GS3 units exhibit this problem.
http://forums.androidcentral.com/sa...sign-fault-audio-buzz-hiss-crackle-noise.html
Therefore I'm really curious: does anyone not hear noise/hiss at low volume levels?
Note that you will only hear the noise with ear buds or low-impedance headphones. Bigger headphones aren't sensitive enough.
I do not hear the noise you speak of on any of my headphones or earbuds.
I tried the stock music player and Power Amp. Power Amp is my main choice of listening to music. I also tried different EQ settings. Nothing.
i dont hear the hiss through my headphones but when I have it hooked up in my car through AUX, i get the hiss =/
Listen to a song that is very quiet, with lower impedance headphones (16 ohms). Classical music or music with areas that are bit more quiet will exhibit this. Also if you listen close, you can even hear the hiss/white noise when you push a capacitive button for a few seconds until they stop the lighting effect.
I think this problem exists on all phones, just some people cant hear it and some listen to their music at louder volumes. I have tested this across a few roms and players, it shows up on everything. I believe it is the amplifier inside this thing being cranked too loud as well.

By chance, do you have the phone plugged in when you get the hiss? And does the hiss only appear when nothing is playing? If it's plugged in to the car charger, try unplugging it and seeing if the hiss goes away. My phone makes all sorts of noise through aux when nothing is playing (like between podcasts or if I'm searching for a song). I noticed that if I unplug the charger, all the noise goes away.

people who say there's no hiss either have earbuds that rest outside the ear, or are deaf/dumb. There are no units that don't have the problem. If there is I'll eat my hat. We need to find a way to lower the analogue headphone volume. Supercurio is the only person capable, to my knowledge. He doesn't seem thrilled to try the US model. Well I'm sorry to disappoint you, but I have a pair of Ultimate Ears $1,500 In Ear Monitors, and when listening to Flac, or streaming from Google Music, there is absolutely no noise more than any other phone. Listening to Jazz, Classical, Soul for the most part. HTC's One X actually blew up my right bass driver on my UE18's because of the retarded "Beats" moniker crappy EQ which I was very pissed about, and no one should be using EVER with a pair of good headphones... good thing I ended up getting IEM rebuilt for free by peeps at Ultimate Ears.

Been through 3 different android devices and countless headphones and I know exactly what you mean. This background noise is simply unbearable. Some people either don't mind or listen to volumes high enough to drown out the hiss. Personally, it is driving me nuts and I've tried everything I could to solve this problem and came to 2 solutions that will help you out.
1. Jack up phone's volume to max and use a passive dual potentiometer to lower volume back to desired level effectively lowering the background noise as well. At loud volumes the SNR is great so turning volume to max and then lowering it with an external device will lower the both the volume of music AND the background noise to exactly what you want, low volume music with great SNR. The only downside is you'll have to buy/build that external volume control device. I built mine from scratch and it looked something like: http://beavishifi.com/articles/Volume_Control/
2. Get an external DAC to effectively bypass phone's crappy audio DAC altogether. I bought a FiiO E7 external DAC and an OTG cable. SGS3 supports them both right out of the box. Fiio E7 is built around Wolfson WM8740 DAC and the sound quality it produces is simply mind blowing. At night, in a room with everything turned off, using in-ear (canal) headphones with all volumes set lowest and I still have to listen very hard in order to hear the background noise. And of course, the audio is crystal clear as well. If you care about audio quality, this will be the best $71 you'll ever spend.

Hmm you're right. I tested this morning on drive to work and only hear the loud hiss when charging cable is plugged in. Volume is lower though compared to playing from other sources (usb, sd) on my head unit. Seems like I have to up the volume by like +5 to get similar loudness.
I'll test it again with my car dock i have (Infuse 4g dock) and see if its similar. I'll also test with my old Evo and Zune player through AUX to hear hte sound difference.

I believe that will eliminate noise usually caused by unshielded wires and noisy power sources (such as crappy car chargers) but won't improve SGS3 DAC's SNR. I didn't actually experiment with one of those so I'm just speculating.
I really think to sell my HTC One X because the audio quality is awful especially on speaker. Yes thats right I'm audiophile and it sounds so compressed especially on higher volume. Its like limiting the sound with slow release and sounds like high-low-high-low every second plus bonus compression. I really hope it can be fixed with some mod otherwise I will just sell it and get galaxy s3 (yeah htc fans kill me but it sounds much better) puke for dr. Dre and his beats audio. Not to even mention that it makes the lossless music sound so much worse literally. Somebody else noticed my problem?

Beats audio uses too much compression. Try disabling any audio enhancement and listen to your music as is.

Beats audio can't be used on speaker.
You're talking about being an audiophile yet you're complaining about sound quality on an external speaker and not headphones? ._.
Check this out http://www.moonaudio.com/titan_spkr.htm
Yeah because I care about it too. On headphones is not much different even with beats disabled. I think it sounds the same with CM9 but I have to try again.
Edit: What you showed me is ridiculous. I have my own studio monitors and I can listen on them. But when I'm in the other room for example and don't have headphones it really sucks to listen to this bad audio.
The fact that HTC made such an expensive phone full of crap (not just the audio) is awful.
No audiophile will listen COMPRESSED music on SMARTPHONE
The best audio i was experiencing on mobile phone was on SGS1 with VooDoo sound mod.
HOX is kinda comparable.

I sometimes wonder how people will say anything to hide a flaw with their phone. Why not just accept it, and let the OP know that he/she is not alone facing it... after that its on the individual whether he wants to live with it or go for a change!!
OP i agree with you, HOX has the worst speaker on any phone i have seen till date (forget about this being an expensive phone). Volume is too low for ringtone in noisy conditions and sound is so distorted that you'll never want to listen to music on it. That said, i think sound on earphones is quite decent and with good quality earphones and DSP manager it fares really well (at least to my ears).
Personally, i love various other features of HOX and ready to bear with the bad speakers on the phone. How important are speakers to you on a phone is for you to decide.

If you look around the soundboard folder you can edit and force srs processing on the speaker (disabled by default) did it on my phone at lower levels its better but maxed out you can here it distorts, you can edit the gain and other eq settings not looked to much no computer while im looking for a house :/
@op
if you root you can use dspmanager just the compression doesn't work but not like that's wanted but I'm looking into that. if you're not you can install the apk but you can't use custom eq but the defaults work just fine.
You should give it a go.
But the speaker is loud to me just not the best sounding.

Well I did a side by side comparison with my desires, and It's a ten fold improvement. Couldn't even hear the desires, just a tinny wasp sound. This speaker actually has bass (relative ) and some mid range.
But yes, It's a phone, no audiophile would give it the time of day, especially the speaker lol..
Also it depends on how compressed the track is when they mixed it down. Rip your tracks from audiophile vinyl as flac, get some £200 headphones, then see what it sounds like. That's the only way to get a real feel for its capabilities as a music player.

While not as good of a device, you should look at the GS3 for its Wolfson Audio chipset. If you're like me and listen to everything in lossless on your home computer, then here's what I recommend.
#1: Turn off Beats Audio
#2: Use PowerAmp
#3: Just put the raw flac files on your phone. MP3 shouldn't even be in your vocabulary.
#4: I recommend moving over to head-fi.org and finding a good set of earbuds. I listen to my HOX over Bluetooth (aptX allows for lossless send over stereo) or using my Sennheiser 650s.
The Bluetooth stack is pretty terrible in Android, but that's hardly the fault of htc. Tegra3 isn't a great choice for audio. See here:

Is everyone talking about the in-built external speaker? I'm far from an audiophile but listening to anything from any phone's in-built speaker is a painful exercise.
I got one of these primarily because of its portability. It sounds amazingly good. I’m probably going to get a second one because when used in pairs they playback in stereo.

I have a pair of Shure 530's which are considered decent headphones. I got a chance to play with a DoCoMo SGS3 which has the Qualcomm DAC and I owned a i9100 which had the Yamaha DAC. I'd rate the phones in the following order:
1) One X
2) SGS3
3) SGS2
The Samsung phones are brighter, more so the SGS3, but the One X has far better separation and range. And on decent headphones the Beats enhancements are god awful. The best setting is “none” or for vocals “treble boost.” At least in my opinion. Anyone using A2DP should skip Samsung phones entirely. With my i9100 I thought BT was responsible for making my music sound like an XM broadcast. The One X is exceptional at A2DP and in a different league than the two Samsung phones I have experience with. The international SGS3 may be different because I haven't used one yet.
True audiophiles who are buying a phone specifically for high quality audio output should only be buying the SGS3 international version. Not only because of the Wolfson DAC but because supercurio has signed on to create his Voodoo apps for it.

See here:

Mine sounds awesome on my beat headphones I got free, better than my senheissers I used on my S2.
Then again I know A. how to keep my ears clean, and B. How to wear headphones...
The amount of people who are "Audiophiles" but dont know how to do the above is rediculous.
Also an audiophile never listens to music on a phone, I use my Yamaha amplifier and Mission speakers, or in the car the Bose setup.... for christ sake its a phone not an amp....
Haha.. well said.
I think it must be a kind of masochisme as 'audiophile' listening to a phone's external speaker.

Ffs just dl poweramp, disable beats audio and adjust it to your liking. One x audio is awesome, I don't care what anyone says, I'm no audiophile, but I go through my Cyrus setup which includes two psx and Russ Andrews powerblock so my hifi cost was a little over 5k (good but not hi end), the one x was a revelation. It sounds better than my gfs iphone.
Please get poweramp, its even been specifically optimized for one x now. You'll change your mind.

Thanks for the poweramp tip.
Massive improvement that exceeded my expectations. Wow.
There's a thread over in the international forums about this, but nothing (that I found) over here in the US forums.
I'm looking for a reasonably cheap (but I'm flexible) pair of headphones that include in-line audio controls.
It's my understanding that the standard urbeats headphones (like the ones that come with the Rezound) work, although it'd be great to see someone confirm this 100%. My problem with them is that they're butt-ugly. They do have a version with white accents, but it still has that ugly red cable.

I'm looking for something with a little bit nicer look to it, like the a-JAYS series. My problem with that is that they only have 2 versions with audio controls... The a-JAYS One+) should work fine (made for Android specifically), but I'm not a fan of the 1-button. I know they have a free app to configure what it does, but I don't want to have to, for example, press the button 3 times to advance songs or something like that.
They also make the a-JAYS Four which comes with the apple-style 3-button controls (and even comes in a white version, which would look sweet with the white SGSIII). But from what I understand, those controls don't work with Android. Confirm?
I'm no audiophille, so even cheap-o headphones like the official apple ones would be fine with me if they actually worked.
Does anyone know of any adapters that would make these, or perhaps the a-JAYS Four (since they're way cooler), actually work?
Like I said above, I'm not not an audiophille so I'm not really picky about quality. I've been using these for the past 4-ish years:
so you know how much I really don't care about quality.
I don't mind something cheap, as long as it get's the job done. If there's some cheap adapter that might look funny but will work then I'm all for it. But, if I'm going to be paying a lot, I want it to actually look nice... which is why I'm turned off by the urbeats. I really like the style of the a-JAYS (especially the flat tangle-free cable).
Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?
(P.S. I don't want headphones, per se (despite the thread title). I want earbuds... and I don't care if they're the in-ear type, or the outer-ear type (like the apple ones, or the ones I'm currently using)
The headphones that come with the SGS3 in the box can do this.

Lol. Seriously? You gotta be ****ting me. What a waste of time typing out that question. Ha.
Why did nobody bring this up in that other thread?
They have volume up/down. Pause/play button, and double click that button to change tracks. And they are good in-ear headphones with pretty good sound quality.

Thanks. Good to know.
Any idea if third-party tips will fit on these? I always find the cheap silicone tips that come with these sorts of headphones to be a little uncomfortable. I'd rather get some Comply foam tips but don't know if they're compatible.
The beats from the HTC Rezound work perfectly - all buttons control as they should.
Like you, I have yet to find anything other the the beats and the Samsung headphones that include three button control...

Thanks for confirming that. I'll probably end up sticking with the included ones, but it's good to know.
I sent an email to the people at Comply to see if they can investigate which (if any) of their tip models are compatible with the SGSIII included headphones
I have never used the Comply tips but if their tips work with other in ears that have the silicone tips then they should fit. I've used a lot of these style IEM and all the tips have been interchangeable. Sennheiser, Sony, LG, Altec Lansing and the Samsung ones...
Posting from my mobile, expect some typos.

Agreed. I've been very surprised at the quality of the earphones. I expected some cheap throw away buds. I have $100 Klipsch S4i and I haven't used them since I got my SIII.

So far
I actually like both of the headphones that comes with the Galaxy S phones. Majority of the time I am using BT headsets anyways.
I am obsessed with my beloved V-Moda headset. Unfortunately the buttons nor mic work on my S3. They worked on my Sensation - well the volume didn't but everything else did.
I ordered an iPhone to Samsung/Nokia adapter pigtail (4") that claims it will make it work. I'll post back if it arrives on Friday as promised.
I hate that my ibeats headphones dont work with my SGS3. Worked perfect on my SGS2 w/ CM9 so Im hoping the CM team implements it for the GSG3...
The ones that come with the GSG3 are sh1t

It's relative I suppose. If you wanted to use it as a phone (I guess some people might buy it for that) the supplied headset would be fine. And they are LIGHT YEARS ahead of the joke buds that apple supplies. But if you're expecting them to compete with your $100+ 20K Hz range headphones... economies of scale don't stretch that far. Look at the economic calamity that was HTC and giving away Beats headphones.
So in the grand scheme of things lets give apple a D for effort and a F for execution - which I think is quite reasonable and fair. That makes Samsung's free headset an A for effort and a C for execution. Not too bad really.
so glad I found this thread, hopefully it'll continue and collect more peoples experiences on what works and what doesn't...
i have the gs3 16 blue from sprint. the headphones in the box do work, and have 3 button controls that function as they should. that being said, i think they suck (agree with you other poster - sound is hollow). i'm not some crazy audiophile or anything, but i really think they suck. that and i hate the marshmallow type "here jam this way into your ear for more bass!" tips on them.
i also have the bose (yes yes, proceed with the mocking) headset with 3 button controls. i much prefer the sound and fit (well the sound is OK, and yes they are over priced, they were a gift). mostly the fit keeps me going back to them. unfortunately only the center control works. and for whatever reason, the sound only works when you plug the phone in after you've initiated a call (e.g. call person, while ringing plus headset in). the sound will not work for calls unless you plug it after nitiating the call. watching a video, listening to an mp3, no problem. headset sound works. very odd. in any case my summary is, the bose functionality on the gs3 blows, which is in stark contrast to my evo 4g - where they worked wonderflly (minus the full 3 button, only center button works for android). no issues with the mic there, or the sound.
i also have the "headset button controller" app from the store. it's pay. gives much greater control over the single button on 3 button iphone style headsets. for anyone stuck with one and android it's very helpful. but it does lead you to "click 3 times for this" "click 4 times for that" "click and hold" etc etc. cause hey, its only one button. winamp also gives some of the same functionality out of the box once installed (click 3 times for prior track, for example) and used.
i'm still looking for a good headset with mic and 3 button for this phone. so glad i found this thread. looks like htc headsets may be the way to go...hopefully mor epeople will post about their experiences with different headsets here.
Regarding the in-box headphones... as I'm thinking about this more, I'm realizing that a lot of people either (a) don't like these headphones, or (b) already have a $100+ pair of headphones and would therefore not use these headphones.
Given that, if there's anyone out there who already has a $100+ pair of headphones and doesn't want the ones that come in-box, I'd be very interested in a second set for my desk at work
I'd of course cover the shipping costs, plus $5 for your trouble I suppose. PM me if anyone is interested.
If want great sounding in ear with control for s3 try Sony smart headset
http://www.sonymobile.com/global-en/products/accessories/smart-headset/
If you already have beats solo or studio but want the cable that make mic and volume control work pm

I got the FiiO Smart Adaptor [sic] Cable and can report that it is an unmitigated failure. None of the missing functions work and it messes up the audio.
I cannot figure out what the heck Samsung has done. It seems pins 2-4 are indeed standard. This implies that pin 4 is... well the only place left for pin 4 to be.
But regardless this adapter is NOT the right choice. Don't buy it.
Hi peeps...
Had a GNex for bout 3 months or so from a Optimus V... and things are awesome... almost. Having played around with modding it and messing around with it for a good 3 months has me noticing its biggest(and really, only) flaw. The audio sucks, it's horrible, my Optimus V was WAY better, and that was a crappy $200 3.2" dumb-smartphone.
I'm going to assume phones use hardware audio processing chips... which means that Samsung either skimped on something or I'm doing something horribly wrong with my whole setup, or something can patch either of these two causes. Granted, the sound quality isn't exactly BAD, but it's nowhere near as good as it could be. I notice a very obvious quality and fidelity difference playing from both my Creative X-Fi card and my old phone compared to my gnex, both 320kbps mp3.
I've made it bearable through DSP manager EQ and post-process EQ, but it clips at higher volumes now(due to dsp manager)... has anybody made a real software audio fix for the GNex?(assuming I'm not crazy and other people have noticed that it sucks too) Even good post processing doesn't really help if the DSP was crappy...
Just for kicks, here's my car setup(I notice even larger differences with my headset/earbuds in, and I don't even use enthusiast stuff)
GNex streams 320kbps mp3 over a2dp to my Bluetooth head unit, I thought leaving the DAC stuff to my car would help... assuming my car does better DAC than a phone ever could.
Miracle settings, anyone? XD
Enabling the EQ and adjusting the settings in the stock player goes a long way towards what you are looking for. Many say the volume is still too low but I don't think so. I also use Pandora and that is not anywhere near loud enough at times due to it's rather limited player. There are some apps in the market for boosting volume although not all work with JB.
If you get the car dock, and gut it, then put an led(smd preferable) between that center pin and ground, you get spdif. If your looking to hook it to your stereo and are worried about audio quality that spdif signal would be translated straight. I was lucky enough to get a desk dock, and as far as getting the spdif, that's all they did.
You sir are correct in that the only flaw this phone has is mediocre sound. The DAC is just average. Since the audio issues are hardware related, theres not much that can be done. As stated earlier, EQing is really the only option. I cant beleive these "Superphones" have such bad DAC's, when my $30 Sansa Clip+ has hardware that satisfies most audiophiles! End of rant.

I'm comparing with earbuds and headset(bose IE/QC15, not the best but doesnt matter), and with my car(stock Honda system with after market head unit that supports 5 band EQ, bluetooth and aux input)
Through the headphone output, the GNex is embarrassingly bad. My $60 creative X-Fi Pro card beats it, and my $200 crappy prepaid old phone beats it, as well, in both quality, and fidelity.
THROUGH BLUETOOTH, the GNex isn't quite as bad(due to the fact that bluetooth audio is digital, DAC done by my car bluetooth circuitry). This way, I can set the DSP EQ from the GNex through DSP Manager... awesome(the dev) did make that Beats DSP Manager for AOKP GNex, but for the life of me I couldn't hear a bit of a difference... so I'm using vanilla DSP Manager(certainly makes a difference). The GNex is still worse over a2dp than my old phone, and my laptop... since DSP is still being done by my phone. It screws up the signal somehow... because no matter how much post-processing I do on the anolog side(car stereo), I can't restore it to what simple EQ did on my aforementioned devices... and the CLIPPING is just such a shame, my old phone didn't clip nearly as badly with the same settings.
Do let me know if you find a perfect setup... I'm seriously considering spending money on extra car signal processing to compensate for the poor quality, but the signal coming out of my PHONE should be of high enough quality that I don't need to spend hundreds on a car system lol.
ps. recaptcha is impossible.

Have you physically used an audio "changing libs/audio libraries" that good stuff? I'm a audiophile freak and I'm hoping that even if these are applied it will make the audio better. From the way you guys mention this is sounds like its horrible lol

Abeit I'd use a different music player but this enables me to use the eq on the fly without me having to close the program to activate the eq settings.

It was a nightmare to simply get DSP Manager to work nicely with AOKP, I had to do endless prodding just to find one that actually WORKED and didn't cause boot loops. I suppose using CM9 would be the easy way to ensure compatibility.
My kernel has this tweak by Ezeekel or however you spell it for "better quality audio" or some crap like that, no idea if it actually works.
I can say with confidence that if you used those settings on the GNex, you would hear crazy clipping every time you hit the high gain sections of your EQ steps.
The Nexus is awesome in just about every other aspect besides audio fidelity.
Do let everyone know if that mod works for the Nexus... because then I would question why it was ever necessary for people to specifically port Beats to Nexus.
How does using the EQ fix sound fidelity or quality issues? Are you insisting the frequency response of the output isn't linear? EQ is used to correct a pair of non-linear headphones or speakers, and not any issue inherent with the output device.
When setting up an EQ, you want to never raise any bar above 0db. So take those settings, and lower each bar by 15db if the highest setting is at +15. That will eliminate the distortion.
The LG G2x had real audio issues - these was a humming/buzzing noise on the 3.5mm output. Try to explain exactly whats up with this phone
Okay.. so I'm back. Rooted and working. Take this with a grain of salt because I'm using new headphones and pandora..
I'm using audio master pro, its an equalizer that doesn't work well with the nexus lol. Anyway.. before I did anything I heard the quality "which I'm highly disappointed" and then did the mod, this is not what I use nor condone because it doesn't give me the audio I desire although clear.
When I finish transferring my 10gbs of music I'll let you know how things work.
With hip-hop And rap it works fine with these settings, great bass and clarity. Could be better but again when I finish all my transfers I'll let you know.

This is a review of Antec GAIN bluetooth receiver with Android phone controls: http://www.antecmobileproducts.com/product_detail/148
I think this little gadget is one of the best kept secrets, and I will tell you why in my review. After spending some time reviewing wired headphones with in-line remotes and wireless bluetooth headphones with built-in controls, I have a good idea of what to expect from a headphone and it's control when using Note 2 or any other Android phone, like S4 I was just reviewing. Bluetooth technology is great since you don't have to tie yourself up with an umbilical cord to your phone and can pickup/end a phone call and play/pause audio and maybe control volume or skip a track, depending on models you use. But you also run into an issue when you are in a middle of something and battery goes dead. Plus, not all the headphones have both volume and track skip controls, and sometimes you are dealing with a single button with multiple functionality. Either way, you have some pluses and minuses with both. What GAIN does is to bridge these both giving you an option to use either one while also providing you all the necessary controls.
This little device is small, well actually its tiny! Measured at 40mm x 23mm x 15mm and weight of under 10 grams it looks almost like a toy you get with a Happy Meal. But it actually packs a lot of functionality and executes it really well. First of all it has a clip on the back so you can attach it close to you. Keep in mind, it will host the microphone so you have to remember its not the same as in-line remote on your wired headphones which is close to your face or a microphone built into your earbuds. You want to keep it close to you so it will pick up your voice better. It has a regular micro-usb charging port which is a big bonus since you don't have to dig for any old mini-usb or proprietary cables. According to Antec the battery should last 6 hours of continuous music play. I haven't tested it for 6 hours, so can't confirm that yet. Will rely on a vendor data for now. Next you have 3.5mm jack where you connect headphones. Headphones are supplied as part of the package. These are actually decent looking earphones, doesn't look cheap at all, and they even come with 3 pairs of interchangeable ear tips. The sound quality is not top notch, but its acceptable in this case. I have to note, they have a short cable which is the whole intent of the use because you are not plugging these into a remotely located phone, but rather into a small GAIN receiver which should be closer to you with it's microphone. Of course, the main idea is that you can use ANY headphones connected to this bt receiver to turn them into wireless headphones!!! In case of any regular wired pair of headphones, you will have to deal with an excess of wires, so will have to figure out how to manage it. Another bonus, this is BT receiver so you can use it to turn ANY speaker into a wireless speaker! As a matter of fact, you can even hook it up to aux input of your car stereo to stream music from your phone and/or pick up the calls that way. The possibilities are endless, but I wish Antec would have included 3.5mm to 3.5mm audio adapter cable. They did include usb/micro-usb cable in the package, but audio adapter cable would have been nice as well.
Now, about the bluetooth interface and phone/multimedia controls. When you look at this device, you don't see any buttons. It has a top flat panel which is clickable in the corners and in the middle. The corner functions are assigned to next/prev track selection and volume control, while the area in the middle is multi functional to pick up/end the call and to play/pause the music and the videos. To prevent accidental clicking, there is a lock button on the side. You also get LED indicator in the middle with a cool blue and red light. Pairing up with Note 2 and S4 took seconds, no need to enter any code. From the get go it was working controlling the audio tracks, volume, calls, YT videos, etc. Everything worked as expected. When you pair up with Android smartphone, you get both multimedia and phone pair up and this device supports all the profiles such as EDR, A2DP, Hands Free, and Headset. I was very impressed because I have seen bluetooth receivers before, but this one has a unique functionality to integrate all the audio, multimedia, and phone controls, comes with a bonus pair of headphones and charging cable, and cost around $30 plus change. I do have to mention the sound quality. It will not make a cheap pair of headphones sound like a million bucks. It just transforms it into wireless. So the bundled headphones were not necessary of the highest quality which is noticeable especially at higher volumes. But once I plugged in a pair of my Klipsch earphones - the sound was top notch. I did a/b comparison using Klipsch (S4A II) pugged directly to a phone and through GAIN and found very little degradation. I'm not an audiophile to analyze the whole frequency spectrum to exhaustion at different volume levels. I'm looking at it from a consumer point of view, and I was satisfied.
So, this one definitely gets my two thumbs up!!! A great design, excellent functionality, easy to use, and flexibility of converting any wired headphone into wireless and then back if you run out of battery - definitely a very impressive gadget. I will try to see how it works in the car next, just need to get audio cable adapter.

OK now you have made me want something else!
How do we buy this? How much is it? The link didn't seem to have purchase info just a link to download a manual. Maybe I missed it.
Time to Google! No. Time for bed!
Edit... OK Google saved me. It comes in other colors too!
Now no more play time. Vacation's over. Work tomorrow. Bummer.

I'm pretty sure it won't. The whole idea is to transfer only audio to your headphones, not a two-way communication with any other control built into your headphones. As a matter of fact, I was using my S4A II Klipsch which has built in-line control and also mic, and it made no difference. Only controls on the box and its built-in mic communicate with your phone.
This this box is my new favorite toy!!! I looked up other similar devices from Sony and Samsung, and nothing even comes closer in price. Plus, I was just testing it with external bluetooth speaker (and those usually have only volume up/down control, no way to play/pause or skip a track), and after connecting GAIN to that speakers 3.5mm input - I was able to use it as a remote control. Super cool!
very nice review bro! i have the same color, and it works just great. the only difference is, you might have a newer model because mine does not have a lock/unlock button on the side.
also, you are right, you cannot use the mic button functionality of your headphones. i have confirmed this.
Can you use it as a bluetooth headset for calling?

Absolutely, it support all the Phone and Multimedia functionality. So you can play and control music, and also receive phone calls, thus a built in mic.

I think the Antec looks very nice, BUT, I do prefer the way that the BlueAnt looks! That said, with the BlueAnt being almost double the price, I would definitely purchase the Antec over the BlueAnt!
I bought the Acoustic Research ARWH1 about 4 or 5 years ago(it's an antique by now going by technology standards! Lol) . I think I paid around $20-30 when it was on sale back then. It still works great and has never given me a single issue! IT is pretty small and not too much bigger in overall size, has a clip on the back, and it has all of the needed controls on it too. That said, I'm not in the market for a BT bridge, but if I was, the Antec would definitely be my choice!
Thanks to the OP for the excellent review and pictures! This will be very useful to anyone looking to get one of these devices!

Thanks for pointing this out. Often I forget that XDA is international community and outside you can't use US Amazon. I just looked it up from your reference and the link is: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-008-AN

What headphones did you use? The bundled one are not that good. Also, keep in mind, this bluetooth wireless connection compresses the sound, and that going to affect some high frequencies.
