[Q] Black screen. Fix please? - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I flashed the latest MIUI ROM for the HTC Vision.
A few hours later, I tried to unlock my phone so I can update my Facebook status and it wouldn't wake. I took out the battery, reinserted it, and turned it on. It booted, but the screen wouldn't turn on. Unusually, the capacitive buttons and the keyboard lights work.
Diagnosis anyone?

Can you boot into Bootloader? (pressing the - volume button and power). Or from ADB by typing "restart bootloader"

If you can do this, I would recommend downloading it again via the actual MIUI.us site, and flashing from bootloader after wipe. I've had some problems before from flashing MIUI. Usually goes away after a rewipe and flash from zip on sdcard.
Oh also search XDA for G2superwipe+ by ghul. This wipes better than ROM Manager does natively, and usually solves black screen problems, no wallpaper(All black backround), and some data issues.

Apparently I can, but the problem is that the screen isn't working.
I only know this because every time I hit the power button (when I assumed it was off) it vibrated.

Do the screen is black when you are in bootloader?

Optical Trackball not working in recovery and stuck in the HTC boot logo

I don't know what to do because my device is currently not booting. The device is stuck at the HTC logo for a very long time (both when booting normaly or going in to revovery). The device finaly is finished booting in like 10 min. , but when it is finnished booting the touch on the screen doesn't work, it keeps a black background and it says no service. In revovery on the otherhand the optical trackball doesn't work anymore, the hardware button does tho because the first option "Reboot system now" does work.
What should I Do???

Have you tried using the volume up / down buttons for moving around the menus and power button for select in recovery?

The volume up/down buttons dont work in recovery
Now its just stuck in a bootloop .
And there is no way of wiping the device, because the trackball isn't working.
hep would be greatly appreciated
The first thing I would try is to remove the SD card and see if your phone boots.
If that doesn't work. Have you tried putting fake flash on your SD and booting into recovery on that to test your trackpad?
Why has it started playing up in the first place? Did you have a bad flash? A wee bit of the history of your device might help to find out what's going on.

the trackball isn't working in the fakeflash. The whole problem didn't happen after a bad flash, but it just went in a bootloop when i tried to put it on this morning. I was running Defrost 1.4
You don't need trackball in the fakeflash. You navigate there using volume up and down. It should work. Try .
How about resetting it by doing the following.
Switch it off, or remove battery > Hold volume down and power button > wait a few seconds > use volume to go to clear storage > power button to select. This doesn't involve going into recovery so your buttons might work there.
Can't you get into the bootloader mode with vol. down + power and wipe it there?
Edit: Few secs too late heh

You need the trackpad to select the option after choosing it with volume up/down.

No, it says clear...... and then it just restarts the bootloop
The fake-flash worked!!!!!!!
I deleted everthing there but now, when I boot up the device it boot up straight into fastboot
You could try now using an ruu to flash. Or try getting into recovery and see if you can use the buttons now.
I'll try a ruu, but the recovery still wont work

stuck on green htc logo with while background

This morning I tried to flash Blackout ICS Incredible. I am currently stuck on stuck green logo with white backgroud forever. I am using CWM touch recovery. I can not get to cwm, bootloader or Hboot menu. Only way i can reboot is to take out the battery. Once I put the battery in and let it boot, it goes back to logo screen and gets stuck. Then I took out the battery again and put it back it and press power button while pressing down vol- button, and it goes back to same logo screen and stuck. Again if i take out the battery and put it back it, and if I press the power button while pressing down the vol+ button, the phone vibrates 3 times and goes blank(dark) with battery indicator light blinking(i am not sure if that is battery light).
Any help would be appreciate. I am trying to connect to adb or fastboot, but it does not connect to the phone yet.
Pull the battery, wait five minutes.
Press and hold the volume down button, then press the power button. Don't let go. Wait.... wait, should go into recovery.
Full wipe.
Format data/factory reset.
Wipe dalvik
Format all partitions except sd card.
Restore a back up.
Then read how to get that rom working. Been posted too many times as for me to repeat it. Check the thread somewhere below yours, the title of the thread I believe is the same as the rom, answer is there.

Just saw the HBoot screen but lost it. What I did was, took out the battery, sdcard, SIM. Replace the battery but not the cover of the battery. Then I hit power and volume(plus/minus) button, the HBoot menu came up, but because the batter cover was not placed, the menu was lost when I did not hold the phone tight, meaning batter got loose. Now I am trying to get back to HBoot menu again after replace battery and cover but to no avail. I still have sdcard, SIM out of the phone. I think there is some combination of keys you've to press coming out from cold boot vs. not. will keep on trying unless someone already knows.

That is common flashing that rom. Choose full wipe in aroma installer even if you did it manually. When the flash is done, don't choose to reboot with aroma installer...DO IT MANUALLY from recovery!!...that should solve it...:good:
The same happened to me and found that solution in their thread.

I was able to get to HBoot, choose recovery, came up with CWM touch, did the wipe data/app, delvic, cache, did format /data, /* all the mentioned other than /sdcard. Then went to install from sdcard and choose that Blackout rom. went through the installer but at the end chose not to reboot from the installer as suggested. Then came back to CWM touch menu and did the reboot from there. It stuck on that logo screen again for 5 minutes. Now again took out the battery for few minutes, and want to go back to HBoot, but could not. Do I have to take out SDCARD as well, Do not think so but not sure. And why do we have to take out battery for so long, any idea, taking battery out for a minute isn't enough?

Should work without battery pull as long as you power off. But when it doesn't, battery pull.
Just volume down, the power, both pressed till it turns on.
Oh, and fastboot unchecked
Edit: if it stll doesnt work, could be a bad download.

After monkeying around with this ROM for a day, it was actually problem with CWM recovery. It looks like this ROM is not compatible with this recovery. I had the same problem after unlocking the bootloader on HTCdev. After a lot of searching, it seems that the HTC process keeps the boot partition locked from recovery but not from fastboot.
I was able to get around this by unzipping the Rom and flashing boot.IMG using fastboot and then flashing the Rom again.

is it possible to flash if my volume button is spoilt?

as per topic, wondering if i can flash a rom if my volume button is spoilt?
my htc suddenly behaved weirdly and screen sporadically seems to keep pressing the back button (or at least it keeps backing when i am in some app) , then freeze. i have to press power button to off, wait a while and on it and it's back to normal, and after some time, reverts to freezing. not sure if it's because i force close apps too much tho. so i thought maybe i could try flashing a new rom. but my volume button isn't working so is it still possible to flash?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA
If you are s-on you would need to first fix your volume botton(s) before trying to root your device. If you don't it would just jam you up. There are several threads on ways to fix your volume buttons.
If you are already rooted and have flashed roms before (which is not stated, thus unlickly), you could flash a touch recovery. However, I am unsure if the volume buttons could be used or are used in the touch version (which I believe it is) and since they are stuck, the button, it could act up on you.
Sent from a dream.
1. Repair your volume button (jam it in there or glue it in)
2. Root using AAHK (I'll post instructions later, out at the moment)
3. Flash 4EXT Touch Recovery
4. Profit??

hmm, i could press the up volume long time ago if i press it hard enough, but it's all unresponsive now. gone as far as unscrewing the 2 screws at the batt area and unsure how to proceed with that volume knocker at the side below the batt compartment. so i stopped at that that time.
It's just that this sudden sporadic backing /screen freeze seems more of a bother so i thought perhaps i should try flashing, or should i try a factory reset?

yup, tried prising then so the lower part seems abit jutting out; the most it can do is slide a little up and down lol. there wasn't much info on this vol thingy and i saw one vid on disassembling the htc which kinda skims through this part and made it looked so easy (but i had no freaking idea what he did after unscrewing the screws) so i sorta left it as that and used a volume app instead
so I'm rooted and able to use the 4ext? the only 4ext i found in google play was the one i needed to pay but there was a link to the site where i could grab the free one though. supposedly if i didn't fix the volume button, am i able to use this to flash?

Do you have ADB? You don't really need the Volume button if you're already rooted and s-off to flash ROMs.
Flash a recovery like 4EXT or even CWM Touch. 4EXT is better though. You can flash 4EXT through the app in the play store and for CWM Touch you can get it here.
If you do decide to go for CWM Touch, you'll have to flash it via fastboot. Read the forums on how to do that or let me know I'll post it later if you can't find anything.
After you flash a recovery and get ADB and HTC Sync on your system. Just use the command "adb reboot recovery" to reboot the device straight to recovery without having to press the volume button.
I've been surviving without the volume down button for a long time now. And I regularly flash stuff so I can say it's not that big a deal. It is kinda living on the edge.. But ADB always helps me out.
tks i should try the ext recovery later.

Ohh,thanks
Hm nope,my power button doesn't show the boot into recovery option .
My screen was acting up so bad that
I wasn't able to do anything for a while and I thought it was a hardware issue so I went to do a factory reset instead to see if it'll be alright. But it still freezes the screen sometimes, more obvious when typing and it either jumps about /freezes. I guess it's the display issue or digitizer issue then ?
Sent from my Desire HD using xda app-developers app
Happens to me to. Maybe rom related? I just jump to lockscreen by hitting the power button and unlocking gets me out of the freezing or acting up. Try this. Open a command window on your PC. Get to adb devices and prepare an adb reboot recovery command. Don't press enter yet. Remove the battery and reinsert it. Start the phone and quickly connect your phone to PC. You'll hear the connection sound, as you hear this , start executing the command window . The phone will boot into recovery. There you could flash ice cold sandwich which hast the boot into recovery option .
Edit: You could also download this to enter recovery.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.siriusapplications.quickboot
Also suggest you flash 4ext recovery.
Inspire 4g
I could actually still move around after my factory reset. So can probably reinstall the 4ext to flash but doesn't seem to be Rom related since I had this arhd for more than half a year and this freezing suddenly occured a few days back

You can do it very simply
On device:
1- Download ROM Manager (ClockWorkMod) OR 4EXT Recovery
2- Download and Flash Recovery for your device.
3- from the application select reboot on recovery
if you already have recovery, simply download ROM Toolbox Lite and browse down to Rerbooter, then root into recovery.
On PC, with USB Development active
1- if you already have download Android SDK
RUN -> cmd -> adb reboot recovery

[Q] Bricked my Desire HD.

Hi, first off I don't really know what all the terms mean , but my phone is rooted, and has a ROM? installed, I'm not 100% sure on what it is as I've forgotten, but I think it is Cyanogenmod?
The past few weeks my phone has been restarting randomly and freezing every now and again. This morning when I tried to unlock it the touchscreen wasn't responding, and this had happened before. I took the battery out and tried to turn it back on. I see HTC splash screen pop up, and that's all I get. I've tried turning it on whilst plugged in charging, and still nothing. It's all fully charged. I've tried turning it on whilst holding the volume down button and it vibrates 3 times and still nothing.
Thanks for any help!
can you still go to bootloader then recovery?
Hold the power button and volume up to get into bootloader, then select recovery. Try to clear cache and davik cache then restart. If its wont work u should freshly reinstall.
I was in your case when using Jellytime R11...my phone started and freezed at boot screen. No matter how manytimes I removed the battery n restarted the phone just stood still. All I can do is go to recovery...

Thanks, I've looked around and can't find a tutorial on how to do that on a Desire HD. Do you know of one, or a good generic tutorial I could follow?
Thanks again.
Take the Sim SDCard Out as well as battery. Wait a few minutes then only replace the battery back and see if it fully boots If it does then power down the phone pull the battery wait again a few minutes then boot with the VOL DOWN key and then factory reset it.
With this done its one more battery pull and boot again it should be fine after that.

Unfortunately that didn't work. I'm not sure if this is of any help, but when booting normally, almost immediately after the white HTC splash screen, the screen flashes blue for half a second.
Thanks for the help!
No clue how I've done it, but I've been pressing button for the last 10 minutes and managed to get in to what I believe is the bootloader? It's a white screen with Fastboot, Recovery, Factory Reset etc and the options. What shall I do from here?
I wiped the cache, and booted and then it froze saying "Android is upgrading, starting apps"
This step takes a while. But if you could get into the bootloader which is Fastboot Recovery and Factory reset you could of choose Factory Reset to see if that fixed the issue.
yup, since you can now access your bootloader, from the recovery just flash your rom, remember to do full wipe first, data, cache and dalvik cache...

Recovery missing from stock phone?

I have had the One for a few days now and have been having data problems. I wanted to wipe the cache partition in recovery, but I cant get to it.
The phone is 100% stock.
I pwr+vol dn to get to the bootloader, then I select recovery and hit the power button. I get the HTC splash screen, then the screen goes black for 10-20 seconds and the phone reboots. I have tried every button combo I could find while the screen is black, but no luck so far.
From what I have found online, after selecting recovery in bootloader the phone should load a screen with a red triangle, then from there pwr+ vol up takes you to recovery. Even this doesn't work.
I talk to Verizon tech support and a guy in a corporate store and they both said that the One has no recovery.? I don't believe them.
I would really like to know what I'm missing here?
Try holding the vol up button and pressing the power button a few times.

I tried, but still no recovery. I called HTC and they said I have a defective phone.

are you pressing vol up first and then pressing the power button? if that fails, release the buttons and try the same thing again.

I did try this multiple times. The strange thing is that after I select recovery from the bootloader the screen goes black. Shouldn't it display an icon with two green arrows forming a circle, or red triangle or something?

try a factory reset from the bootloader after you back up everything that you can.
The HTC One was showing different odd behaviors with different recoveries on some isolated incidents before.
I have seen a few times that recoveries broke due to some random stuff happening. I have not seen the stock recovery break though. Interesting.
In the cases i have seen, a RUU did always help. Or put differently: re-flashing the recovery helped, no matter how it was done.
Sometimes its even enough if you just put the phone to fastboot mode and do a "fastboot erase cache" in cmd.
If you feel familiar with ADB and fastboot, you can obtain a stock Verizon recovery image here on XDA and flash it, using fastboot (provided you managed to unlock your phone or did the new s-off method).
Maybe first try to fastboot erase cache too.
Then, if you are S-ON and locked, you would need a Verizon RUU, which is not available as far as i know. So that would mean then service if none of the tips here help you. The service centers have the RUU's.... for them its a matter of a few minutes to fix it i guess...

When i first got my One a couple of weeks ago, i tried accessing recovery as well and got the same results. Black screen and seemed to freeze up for about a minute then it would boot into android. This was while i was 100% stock and locked. After s-off and flashing cwm i have no problems getting into recovery.

Mine came the same way, no functional stock recovery...(strange)
After S-Off and unlocking and loading a custom recovery, it hasn't had any Recovery related issues at all.
Getting into recovery on a completely stock device is tricky. I had the same issue. You select recovery from the hboot menu and wait till the screen goes black. I mean, completely off. Then hold the volup + power buttons.
Took me a few tries, but once I figured it out I was able to get in almost always.

after selecting recovery from the bootloader, wait 40 seconds after the screen goes black. you should then see the red triangle and exclamation mark. you can also just hold vol up and keep tapping the power button. if you do it right, you should see yellow text at the bottom that says "Mount SDCARD failed 1 times" then 2 times, 3 times, 4 times, 5 times. this is what the phone is doing while the screen is black. pressing vol up and power a few times enables this to be shown. when that's done, you will see the triangle as you are used to seeing. hope this helps! hit the thanks button if it does :good:[/
After I did the volume up and the power button some tiny text came up on the screen (green) and went thru the routine you described and a green triangle came up and written underneath it said ANDROID RECOVERY or something like that. The text was so small I had to use a magnifying glass to read it. While in that recovery you have the option to wipe the cache partition, apply from sd card, apply from phone storage, apply from cache and wipe data / factory reset. So evidently this phone's recovery is wierd. HTC probably didn't expect anyone but developers to use it.
