Pull the battery and sdcard and let sit for about an hour. Try again with the newest version. If you still have problems try a new cable.

Even tho its been in there for about 2 hrs will it work pulling the battery and sd card
You need to get into download mode open your keyboard with the power off and hold the "1" key and power button at the same time until you see a yellow triangle..... now you can use odin
okay phone powered back on now it comes up with a computer and a a phone with a triangle with this mark in it !...and also how can i update to 2.3.4 using a mac book pro?
The screen means your phone is recoverable.
1. Pull the battery again. Disconnect the usb/power cord.
2. Slide open the keyboard.
3. Press the #1 key and hold then press the power button. Both must be press at the same time. Release when the download screen comes on.
4.Fire up Odin and either reflash the same file you did previously or EG22 like suggested in post #2. In Odin, make sure only "Auto reboot" and "PDA" are checked.
Edit: You should able to flash with a Mac using Heimdall.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=755265
Now would i download the 2.3.4 one and use Heimdall?
Heimdall don't work on Mac with our epics. U need a PC or use bootcamp to run windows

Okay so I got it to.take the 2.3.3 no to upgrade to 2.3.4 do I just insert that into the PDA using Odin and then how do I root it ....thanks

I'm trying to access the Download Mode for my Epic 4g but can't seem to do so. I've flashed my phone back to stock several times in the past so I know I'm following the correct procedure.
The problem started after flashing my phone to Eclair DI18 using Odin and using the one click root & recovery 2.55. I was constantly receiving 2.2 OTA update notices so I clicked install thinking that I could restore back to stock if something went wrong. I received an error message during the update but the phone was able to start into Eclair so I didn't think anything of it.
Well, I tried flashing my phone back to stock today for the purpose of updating the phone, but I couldn't get download mode to start. Thinking that I could restore the download mode using one of my old back up files from CW3, I tried the restore option but it was a no go.
Is there any way to restore my phone without using Odin? I'm still able to boot into recovery mode. If that's not possible, is there anyway to remove clockworkmod recovery so I can bring the phone into a Sprint store?
Thank you in advance!

Download mode is built into the phone. ROMs shouldn't kill it. Pull out the battery, plug the phone into the computer. Now hold the 1 key and then press and hold the power button. If it goes into download mode then you can put the battery back in.
Just tried it but I get stuck in a boot loop. It boots into samsung screen, reboots, samsung screen, reboots...
With the battery in and usb out, i'm able to boot into CW recovery...
If you are holding the 1 button first then holding power you shouldnt go to the Samsung boot screen.
If you are I dont know of any other way to get into download mode. Sorry.

if the 1 and power= no download mode then maybe keeny is right and ur 1 key is broken, maybe use the samsung update tool with eb13 in it?
Does that make it go in download mode automatically?

SOLVED! Thanks everyone for all of your replies
I am also having similar problem.
On pressing power on botton or Volume Down+Cam+ power button.. NOTHING HAPPENS.
However I can boot into Download Mode (on battery only).
1) Computer do not recognize USB Drive. (tried uninstalling drivers > rebooting > reinstalling > rebotting ) still USB device not recognized. Even tried with different USB cable. And different ports.
2) However I managed it on my other computer. Where only 1 out of 4 USB port recognize my device.
3) Tried Odin to flash EC05 Stock... It hangs at some place or the other, and screen goes off or some times green (very rare).
4) Phone do not restart in Download mode without battery.
I tried to boot download mode without battery (plugged into computer).. but it wont.
Battery+USB = phone wont boot in download mode.
Phone boots to download mode only on Battery.
After that If i plug in the phone and remove the battery.. screen still stays on.
so my phone will boot cwm but will not boot up. it goes to the SAMSUNG screen and just holds. please help.... any ideas would help

I'm assuming you were flashing a ROM, so just wipe everything x3, and reflash the ROM or a different one.

Now that doesn't make sense. You can safely get into CWM, but not into download mode?
I have to ask to make sure. With the phone off, you're holding the 1 key on the keyboard and then holding the power button?
Well if that's the case, get to a PC and insert your SD card into a reader. Download a kernel, like Genocide v2 or etc to the card, and boot into CWM to flash the new kernel off the card. See if that helps.
yes i hold down 1 and the power button, and i tried the genocide2.0 and it still does the same just the samsung screen has a different logo

If your phone has life you should be able to get into download mode. Take your battery out, press the power button for 10 seconds. With the battery still out connect with cable to computer and press and hold the 1 key on the keyboard and then add pressing and holding the power button. Download mode will appear. Use the EK02 ODIN OneClick.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1409634
All the ones after that are pre-rooted. EK02 is completely stock because the zergrush root exploit still worked on it. If you use the pre-rooted EL29 ODIN OneClick, you can still get 100% stock in a few seconds by running Option B (Unroot) in the Auto Root package.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1383678
Most of the time the Sprint techs won't care that you are rooted, I'm just letting you know in case you get one of the annoying ones.
Chances are your problem was resolved since it's been ~5 hours, but anywho...
Number one: please use full stops as it makes your post SO much easier to read and understand.
Number two: that triangle + "custom OS can brick your phone" is ODIN/download mode. Just restart the phone (volume down button OR hold power button OR battery pull).

I cannot boot into recovery, do a normal boot, all I can do is download mode. Where should I go from here?
You went from bml to mtd... you CANNOT RESTORE BML NANDROIDS ON MTD. Please read bout things before flashing things.
On a helpful note.. you will need to unbrick your device by odining back to stock. Give me a second and ill link you the how to. If you feel incompetent then I offer unbricking services if you would like via teamviewer7.

Hmm I'm not really sure but I'm almost positive all of the current ROMs contain a kernel with root. You could flash CWM through Odin and then flash a ROM or a BML kernel if you plan on staying stock and you'll be rooted. I'll get you a link to a CWM tar here in a sec.
EDIT: flash this in Odin after you get back to stock:
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1357655
You'll find the link further down in the post for the .tar file. If you want to go to CM9/AOKP/other MTD TW ROM, most of them will automatically flash the MTD compatible CWM. This one that I linked is for BML ROMs only.
Hope this helps!

once you odin back to stock and root, just flash a zip version a bml deodexed rom. there is stock fc09 deodexed that is bml. make sure you have repartition checked and don't forget to include the pit file in odin before you start the process. also make sure you do not use the stock cable that came with the phone. use a blackberry data cable if you have one available. others wise something similar.
I believe re partition auto checks when you put the pit file in. But either way make sure its checked. I forgot it once and it wasn't pretty

The video Uber pointed to has all the links to the files you need. To summarize you will have Odin on your computer with Samsung drivers installed. You will also have the clockworkmod tar on the computer and download the ROM to your phone's sd card.
1. You will turn off your phone, hold the 1 key on the keyboard then add pressing and holding the power button until the yellow triangle saying download mode pops up.
2. With Odin up on your computer and auto reboot box unchecked, connect the usb cable (recommend a Blackberry cable). It should show a comxx in the box. Put the clockworkmod tar in the PDA box of odin by browsing to the file on your computer from odin.
3. Hit start. It go pretty fast and tell you when it is complete and passed.
4.Now with the yellow triangle still on your phone, disconnect the cable. Pop the battery out and in. Press and hold in this order, volume down, camera and power buttons making sure the power is the last you add. Hold those for about 5 full seconds. Clockworkmod 5 should come up.
5. Choose install file from sd card by scrolling with the volume down button and selecting with the camera button. Go to the place on your sd card that the FC09 ROM downloaded to, perhaps a directory called download. Choose the file and flash it.
6. Hit reboot system and you should have a rooted deodexed stock ROM on your phone. You are ready to do any rooted stuff and even flash themes on this ROM.

Why don't you keep using qbking77's videos? He has how to videos for a bunch of rom's, plus he reviews rom's too.
Give some of the reviews a viewing, see if you like what is in the rom, and then follow his directions.
What others have said is correct, you can screw up your phone if you're not careful, but his directions are very good and very complete. If you do exactly as he says, you should not have issues.
If you do have issues, others have written instructions on what to do to recover from that too.
Have fun. Take your time. You'll learn as you experiment.
Since you already got the hang of odin it is almost impossible to brick this phone...sponge it yeah but tough to brick. Have fun.

Or follow the rooting instructions found within these forums or youtube qbking77 epic videos. And download a 3rd party tethering app or flash a custom rom that has tethering baked in.

But be advised the root method violates TOS agreement and if sprint finds out and decides to they can terminate your service no questions asked. I've only heard of it happening if someone uses a extremely large amount of data while tethering. But there is a first for everything.

Hey Guys,
Here's my situation. my power button doesn't work and to my understanding, that's part of the motherboard so I'm kind of fked on that end (water damage so sprint won't replace it).
My phone's stock right now, but I have rooted in the past with QBKING77's method (mentioned above by kennyglass and QBKING77's youtube how-to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9eaCtiS0Bo&feature=youtube_gdata_player).
I'm trying to root the phone so that I can install CM9 on it (used beta 2 in the past). I'm able to adb into the phone and get it into download mode. I'm scared that if I flashed the CWM Tar file, there won't be anything to get into CWM with since I can't do the button combination anymore.
Any suggestions? Also any recommendations on the power button problem would be much appreciated as well (I currently slide to open it and bought a cheapo non-data charger and it boots it up).
Thanks guys for all your help

Get another Epic off of Ebay.
It works fine now. I just slide to get it on and installed a power off app so that's a workaround for now. Upgrade's coming up soon so just going to stick this out for now.
I'm not familiar with ODIN enough but I would assume there's a way to just flash the ROM and CWM at once to obtain root and CWM together....

As a test y don't you turn off your phone... hold down volume down and the camera button and use your "power button" trick... should put you straight into the stock recovery... then you'll know whether or not you can get into cwm

Sorry, forgot to mention that it doesn't work
The cable just powers the device on without performing the actions of the power button so button combinations don't work
I know I can boot to recovery with a rooted rom, but I need to be able to install that first. And I need my phone to be on with a working ROM in order to ADB into it for any ADB commands.
Can you get into download mode with the cable and holding the "1" key? If so there are odinable prerooted ROMs.

@kennyglass123
I can't get into download mode with the cable and holding the "1" key, BUT
I can get into download mode by turning on debugging and adb into it with "adb reboot download"
What would the steps be then? Would I obtain a odinable pre-rooted rom (any suggestions?), Odin, re-boot, installed cwm recovery through the app, reboot, boot into cwm, and then wipe + flash cm9?

Here is an EC05 favorite: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/32800014/EC05_DXC.tar.rar
When you say app, do you mean ROM Manager? You will have to see if that EC05 prerooted will accept ROM Manager. If that is what you meant, then yes. Just like that.

Ok a few things just to make sure:
I'm on FC09 Stock right now, so by flashing this ROM, I would then be able to install clockworkmod recovery through ROM Manager (giving me the latest clockwork mod recovery I believe) and then get to clockworkmod recovery through ROM Manager.
Eventually I would like to end up on CM9 which is MTD. Could I just flash a CM9 ROM over the EC05 Rooted ROM?
Would I still be on FC09 and/or would it be better to flash another FC09 Rooted ROM (i'm referring to the one in QBKING77's youtube link) to upgrade to FC09 and then flash the CM9 ROM.
In ODIN, I would place the EC05 file in the "PDA" location in Odin?
Would I check re-partition and autoboot? I'm assuming I don't check f. reset time.
Thanks for all your help
If you Odin the tar I posted you will be back on EC05 modem. You can always flash a newer modem with Odin. If ROM manager does work on that odined ROM then you can go right to cm9 after clockworkmod 5.
