I was recovering my backed up stock rom( came from cm9) and I received an error saying "format rfs device failed on system" or something to that effect while trying to restore it. Once that happened, the back was off, and the battery came out so I tried to boot back into recovery....I get the SAMSUNG logo, soft key lights come on, phone goes black, then back to the samsung logo.
I cannot boot into recovery, do a normal boot, all I can do is download mode. Where should I go from here?
You went from bml to mtd... you CANNOT RESTORE BML NANDROIDS ON MTD. Please read bout things before flashing things.
On a helpful note.. you will need to unbrick your device by odining back to stock. Give me a second and ill link you the how to. If you feel incompetent then I offer unbricking services if you would like via teamviewer7.
Also you don't post questions in general... there is a q&a forum for questions.

http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/c...bile_Driver_V1.3.800_For_SPH-d700_Epic_4G.zip
http://devphone.org/files/epic4g/Odin3_v1.61epic.pit.zip
http://devphone.org/files/epic4g/SPH-D700-EC05-8gb-REL.tar
download all of those files
# Install Samsung drivers (if you haven't already)
# Extract and open up Odin
# Place the pit file in the PIT slot and the .tar file in the PDA slot
# MAKE SURE ONLY "AUTO REBOOT" IS CHECKED
# Boot phone into download mode (Turn the phone off and hold '1' key and power button)
# Connect USB cable
# Click start now sit back and wait for it to finish
after you do that you should be on stock EC05 and then you can do the one click root again

That'll do it, but I would recommend a newer tar as EC05 is an old Froyo ROM

Sure, forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1599752
It's a leak but it'll work just fine. If you're gonna be flashing over to an MTD ROM it won't matter anyway.

Hmm I'm not really sure but I'm almost positive all of the current ROMs contain a kernel with root. You could flash CWM through Odin and then flash a ROM or a BML kernel if you plan on staying stock and you'll be rooted. I'll get you a link to a CWM tar here in a sec.
EDIT: flash this in Odin after you get back to stock:
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1357655
You'll find the link further down in the post for the .tar file. If you want to go to CM9/AOKP/other MTD TW ROM, most of them will automatically flash the MTD compatible CWM. This one that I linked is for BML ROMs only.
Hope this helps!

once you odin back to stock and root, just flash a zip version a bml deodexed rom. there is stock fc09 deodexed that is bml. make sure you have repartition checked and don't forget to include the pit file in odin before you start the process. also make sure you do not use the stock cable that came with the phone. use a blackberry data cable if you have one available. others wise something similar.
I believe re partition auto checks when you put the pit file in. But either way make sure its checked. I forgot it once and it wasn't pretty

Thank you all, I got it up and running.
I have a fully bricked EPIC 4G.
Have try every possibility that do not include opening my phone.
I even try to use the USB unbrick JIG solution and nothing
My batter is at 4.045V and I am not able to get anything, my screen is completely BLACK
Is there something I might try or some way to get this cell-phone into DOWNLOAD MODE so I can save it?
If not, I will have to take it to SPRINT and see if they can do something or replace it

Have left the battery out of the cell-phone for a complete day.
Have try keep push button 1 and power and sliding the battery in, wait for a couple of seconds, slide it out and repeat the process for a while.
Done the same using the USB

Pull the battery and the sdcard. Let it sit for about an hour, don't plug it in, put it back together and try again. Try to go directly into download. Don't try to boot it up. When you installed the eg22.bin did you put it in phone or pda? Modems go in phone so I just wanted to make sure you had it in the right slot.

Well hopefully you had the .bin file in the phone slot and not the PDA slot... if you had it in the pda slot like you do with the .tar files for the other modems then you didn't follow the instructions on how to flash the eg22 modem...
All I can think of is that you did put the file in the pda and doing so you wiped out any power regulation program? I hope the 1 hour pull works, if not you might try to plug it in with no battery at all and see if any lights come on?
But yeah if you can't get into download mode you are hosed.

OP, if you can get it into dl mode then you should be fine. What I would do is a fresh install of a newly downloaded odin from a different site than your odin. Then re-install the samsung drivers and use a different cable. Also redownload a basic stock official Froyo .tar file just to get you unbricked and flash that one.

just tried to boot into odin mode and it said E:Update logfile dose not exist
From what I understand, unless you've wiped out your radios you should be okay. I had a similar thing happen to me, and corrected it in this manner.
You'll need a CWM recovery tar (I use Chris41g's LoStKernel)
An SD card
A flashable ROM (I use AbsolutZeroGI's EG30-Stock-OdexV2.zip)
Put the ROM on the SD card, with the phone unplugged pull the battery, replace and boot into Odin mode (volume down and power, then volume up at first screen).
Open Odin, select PDA then the tar file, make sure auto reboot is checked and run it.
Once the phone reboots pull the battery and go into recovery (volume up and power) wipe everything then flash the ROM. When it reboots you should be ok.
Conversely, you could look for crawrj's stock Odin Rom with recovery, busy box, and SU, (which you would also run from PDA), but the steps above are what I used.
i cant boot into odin mode :/
Oh, sorry about that, do you know anyone with a USB jig, I don't know for sure, but that may help determine if it is a hardware problem?

So this must mean we can flash fash back to stock with odin if we have problems.
yup! this is our fall back ROM. now we need a triangle away to reset the counter!
It Works
I decided to be the test monkey on this one.
I had a nandroid backup of when I screwed my system so badly it just boot looped repeatedly. Restored that with cwm, verified it was still hosed, unpacked this zip, used odin to burn the .tar.md5 to the phone as PDA, rebooted.
It does some gear chunking while booting the first time then reboots - don't panic yet! On second boot it does some more rebuilding, then 'WELCOME!'
Bonus: CWM now sees the actual external sdcard as /sdcard and can find things like roms and backups on it. Edit: This CWM finds .zips on the sdcard, but doesn't seem to know how to backup/restore.
So is this for un rooting our phones?

After burning this with Odin I ended up with a CWM that I didn't expect - and I've never seen one that actually recognized the external card. However, with all the things I've been trying it's quite possible I ended up burning a boot image I forgot about. I need to try reburning this and see if anything changes, but can't do it right now.

Strange - I had kind of a weird experience with this. I flashed via Odin as usual (as I've done a 100x before) and when it rebooted, it still had remnants of the previous rom I had installed. I didn't get the "welcome" screen as if I was starting from a new factory rom. but at least it got me back to step 1 and I could flash the Lean 2.1 rom again to repair my screw ups.
I accidently wipe my phones internal storage including backups, Im running latest TWRP and it wont read my sd card. I have a custom rom on the sd card but i cant access via recovery. phone boots to recovery and even download mode but i dont think my usb debug is checked and i cant get thru with odin. Im crunched for time as my wife is coming home in an hour and she will be furious if i bricked my phone i need help restoring before she gets home. thanks.
Heres how I fixed the problem, it was easy after doing but confusing getting there. Since the phone would not boot past the galaxy s3 screen there was no way for me to select USB debugging. That option totally did not allow me to use the Galaxy S3 toolkit listed in android development nor could I select and run any of their lists of "Root" roms because something would happen where ODIN didnt boot it correctly. It ran it at first then "Boot" came on then "Reset" came on then "Pass" came on but nothing ever took. I went to samsung-updates.com selected the ICS factory rom and saved it to desktop. Then I unzipped that rom to unveil the TAR file and flash that via Odin and Bam it ran thru no problems. The problems I ran into earlier were links from other posts and it turned out they were either bad links or not for the phone. I actually tried one guys download link that claimed to be specifically for the T999 us version and it turned out to be for another phone all together Im just lucky that flash didnt brick my device even more. Anyways Odin was my friend it was just a matter of downloading the "Correct" rom. thanks to all that helped I appreciated you all taking the time to answer.
I would download this tool http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746682. You should be able to use your PC to flash your Nandroid, although i have never done that.
It doesn't matter if USB debugging is checked if the phone is off.
when i boot to recovery it boots to manual mode anyone know what to do next?

Hi guys,
I'm a bit new to the galaxy S3, I'm not too familiar with most things. I rooted my phone a few weeks ago with ODIN. This was to try to get the Google Wallet to work. After numerous attempts, i gave up, and figured i would unroot my phone because of guarantee reasons. Today i went into recovery mode to wipe cache and davlik, then upon reboot, the phone stopped working. I would get the vibration, the Samsung logo, then the Galaxy S3 logo, but that's as far as it goes. I can also go back into recovery mode, and probably download mode.
I just downloaded TriangleAway to reset my flash counter, but that wasnt compatible with my phone. I also got mobile Odin, same result. I have the Videotron Galaxy S3 SGH-T999V. The only changes i have made were of the build.prop, which I have restored to its original state, though the phone still thinks its a Galaxy Nexus.
Any ideas of what i could do? I wouldn't mind wiping all my data and going back to how it was when i first bought it without the root.
Thanks guys
Forgive me if i am not in the proper section

I've heard about thus happening to phones without a stock rom, but not just rooting. You could try using Odin to flash a boot loader, kernel and rom. That should unbrick the phone. There are lengthy directions on xda for that. Let us know what happens, and good luck!

Unzip and flash the .tar.md5 file with Odin. This will rewrite your system and other partitions.
After rebooting it can take a few minutes at the Samsung logo so just let it sit for at least 10 minutes.
If it gets to be much longer than that, hold power till it reboots and as soon as the screen goes off let go of power for a moment and immediately press and hold power, volume up and home. Then release when you see the blue text flash at the top of the screen. This should get you to recovery. Wipe cache, dalvik and factory reset then reboot again.
No guarantees itll fix your problem of course but this will give you a fresh, full stock system. So hopefully it does fix uou up.

Go to Play Store and try acquiring Titanium Backup. It can only be used if the user is rooted. Try using it and if it doesn't correspond then you're not rooted. If it does then you're still rooted. I also believe if you don't have Superuser or SuperSU on your phone, then you're not rooted since those two are the "gateway" between apps and system.
Dont worry. Youre not rooted anymore. Flashing that fw in odin rewrites the system and other partitions to be just like it would come out of the box. If you're still concerned about it look for the file "su" in /system/bin and /system/xbin. If its not there youre not rooted.

oh so does that mean my flash counter is also reset? or its still at 2 or whatever?
Did you reset the counter before? Why don't you just go to Odin mode and check

I tried but triangle away wasnt compatible with my phone. Its a t999v and practically everything is incompatible. How do i check though? I assume i go into recovery mode, then what?
Go to download mode. It should tell you on the top how many flashes youve done and if the OS is modified.

Booo "Yes (1 counts)" i guess ill have to take my chances. Thanks a lot for everything guys!
Thsts weird. I couldve sworn other T999V users have used both Triangle Away and Mobile Odin.
Both do require root though.

Maybe he used an older version. Op, xda has a thread just got triangle away. You should check it out. It's also linked in the themes and app section.
