Leather Cases and Heat - Galaxy S II Accessories

I know it's been brought up here and there in response posts, but I haven't really seen any solid answers on this, so here goes.
How much heat is trapped in the phone and not allowed to dissipate when a thick leather case is used? I know it's been said you couldn't feel heat through the case, obviously, but that doesn't mean the heat isn't there, it means it's trapped against the phone. So any of you rocking leather cases, have you ever taken the phone out in the middle of heavy use and felt the back? How hot does the phone get? Thanks

Heat can be felt in flexishield/gel cases when youre multi tasking heavily or gaming. I dont think youll notice it much on plastic cases.
I guess heat will depend on the leather case. If its just made of leather, you will feel some heat but if the leather is on top of plastic then you wont feel it.
Heat goes very soon even if youre using a case so that shouldnt be an issue.

That's exactly my point. Just because you can't feel it doesn't mean it isn't there. I'd rather feel the heat, because that means that it's leaving the phone. If it's trapped against the core behind a thick leather or plastic case, it will prevent the core from cooling naturally.

What I mean is you wont feel the heat on your hands. but the front surface is there for the heat to escape. And it cools down immediately after you close the process

Why do I even have a TPU case? what does it protect?

I had an otterbox defender but it was too big and didnt fit my docks, so I went to the tpu but then i got the thinking... What is it protecting besides the back case? I mean is it really going to absorb enough shock to save my phone if I drop it?
I'm more worried about the screen, but even then the screen seems strong enough to not scratch (and if you scratched hard enough wouldnt it just go through the screen protector and scratch the screen anyways?)
I mean its a little slippery without the TPU case but will it really save my phone from a fall?
Are there screen protectors out there that will prevent my screen from shattering or scratching despite being gorilla glass?
It really just seems like the tpu makes my phone warmer than it should be and bigger...
I went 6 years with a razor only to have a semi deep scratch on the plastic and a few nicks...
My screen has two small scratches from putting my phone in my pocket with my car keys. I've always used tpu cases. I had one on my captivate and dropped it from about 10 feet and no damage. I guess it all depends on how it lands but mine has saved my phone multiple times.

go get and use the Otterbox Commuter case. It protects with minimal bulkiness.
Sadly, there is no screen protector in the world that doubles as a drop protector too. If you really want to protect against scratches and knicks and still have grip, get the ZAGG shield that also covers the back.
Sure, the Commuter is bigger than a TPU case but it sure as heck protects from drops more than a measly back cover.
yes it will protect the phone

Well nothing sharp goes in my phone pocket, and the screen faces my leg.
I'm just not convinced a tpu would give it that much more protection. I'm sure moto has to do quality studies and test how durable they are. If I drop my phone I'm a lot more worried about breaking or scratching the screen than the back case.
And then are screeen protectors even strong enough? It really depends on how you drop it, all the force in one corner or the middle of the screen and thats it, if it falls flat on the back, probably no real damage. And what about shock? does it absorb all the shock or will something crack inside?
I want to write into myth busters, see if cases really protect.
Also, dont you notice your phone getting hotI assume from the thicker tpu, so wont that over heat it, slow it down, and reduce the life?
A case's effect on heat dissipation is real. The amount of heat removed from the phone by air (convection) is not going to be the same as the heat passing through the case (conduction) and convection on the outer surface. Material properties and thickness dictate how much is affected.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_thermal_conductivities
The higher the 'k' value, the easier it is for heat to pass through. As you can see,
the materials that would absorb shock better do not make the best conductors. So, this is not specific to TPU, just about any case is going to be lousy with cooling, in theory.

Evutec S-series case

TL;DR: buy if you want more grip on the phone and don't mind minimal protection, don't expect a premium product as it's average at best.
This may or may not be the case for you. The case is extremely cool looking with the carbon weave under a smoked layer of resin that feels somewhat rubbery if you ever had a oneplus "karbon" case you'll know the texture its grippy but not so much that it grabs onto lint and anything else that may be residing in your pocket. It's also extremely thin, I didn't measure it but their claims of being less than 1mm thick seem very true there isn't much bulk added to the phone nor weight. Both pieces of the case comes with semi sticky pads (more like post it note sticky not 3m double sided tape) on them to keep it planted onto the device which definitely helps it stay put unlike the issues some experienced with other cases, it does however make the phone difficult to open since the case covers the beveled edges and makes them pretty flat with the inner screen.
Now onto the negatives of which there are a few, the biggest issue and the one that ruined the case for me isthe fact that it doesn't cover the bottom of the chin leaving everything exposed, and worse yet the piece that covers the front of the chin seems like it'd be perfect to trap dirt under and grind it into that gorgeous aluminum. Normally I avoid cases that don't offer bottom protection like that but in the case of Evutec there's almost no indication in the product photos of the case not covering the chin. My other issue is with the quality of the case, there's sharp edges all around the case, especially where the chin curves out, material is also very uneven and the curves don't match up from side to side. Overall I'd say it's a $10-$15 case not a whopping $60 in terms of the quality.
Note: the red vinyl on the phone under case wasn't on it when I initially got the case and it fit the same with or without vinyl.
Not that there a lot of options, but the Evutec is far better than the Case-Mate. I like that the Evutec has the double-sided tape, the case stays on.

It's extremely overpriced for something that doesn't even cover the bottom of the phone, kinda disappointing since their cases for other phones are very high quality at a third of the price of this.

Just noticed the hinge and chin can be damaged if dropped because of lack of protection. I hope we get more options soon.

back glass strength

I had my Razr in my back pocket the other week, and when i sat down in a car i heard a quiet cracking noise, the back glass cracked.... How hard is it to swap and are they really that brittle? Thanks!
I can't speak for how hard it is to install the new one but it's literally just a piece of glass with the adhesive strips. It'd be pretty trivial with a spudger/knife and a heat-gun. It looks like the going rate for a new one is around $100USD from AliExpress: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002618579898.html
Glass only bends so much. It's neither solid nor liquid, an amorphous solid. A bizarre material, the laws of hydraulics can apply to it. Making some of it's behaviors seem baffling.
I have a Note 10+, which is huge. I always wear bdu pants. The thigh cargo pockets are perfect for phones.
Watch a tear down vid of that phone before you dig in. Take your time and have a OEM seal kit to close it back up.

This is huge, make sure you have those adhesive strips!
In case phone is used without protecting case, highly recommend putting hydrogel film on the phone back and front glass panell, it's literally invisible but create extra protection as well a makes phone less slippery in hands.
Putting hydrogel screen protector on internal display is a different story, I have it on and so far no issues after few month.

Welcome to XDA
You really need a good case to protect from face plants and corner hits when drop as well as from being flexed. Any impact that can bent the frame or shatter the display can damage chipsets and the mobo by high G loading alone. A good case spreads out the impact G loading spike making drops survivable.

True, after using phone for few weeks with just hydrogel film on it I've ordered few cases on Amazon to get more protection. I was looking for compact phone thus chosen Razr and don't want to add any bulk to it.
Finally ended up with evutec carbon case, may be not super protective comparing to others but it's almost perfect in terms of look & feel. Hydrogel film still used along with the case and completely invisible.

Yeah it's a trade off.
Sometimes it's more practical to tether the phone if you have a tether point.
BDU pants have cargo pockets that are perfect for stashing phones.
Belt pouches are another option.
The occasional fast as on ice slipe/hip-shoulder fall/landing on the phone side might not end well.
There's only so much you can reasonably do.

Question Galaxy A72 scratches due to Samsung case

Hello everyone, has anyone else noticed in Galaxy A72 and Galaxy A52 that the Official Samsung cases are leaving marks and scratches on the plastic surrounding of the phone? My A72 phone looks like full of scratches and a friend has the same issue with his A52. Talking to Samsung Greece and they won't believe me saying i made the scratches myself.... Same answer to my friend. Can anyone help me in what could i do to be heard from the company?
Keep inside of case clean and free of debris.
Use some fine 600 grit wet/dry sandpaper to smooth inside of case if needed.
Stretching some teflon tape around the phone's edge will help.
Use another case.
Most untreated hard plastics are relatively soft and prone to scratches... of course Samsung isn't responsible unless it arrived like that... never mind Samsung's poor material choices

I agree with the poor material of Samsung phones.... Makes me think to sell everything and switch to iphone instead of trying to fix samsung cases The support is the worst ever they won't even believe me

If you used any phone in a case and paid attention this should be common knowledge by now. Even on the N10+ frame rail scratches can happen on the anodized aluminum.
Frequent cleaning of the inside of the case and keeping the phone clean in general helps.
I leave the protective factory film on the side rails until it falls off because of this.
You could use something like mylar wire marking tape to protect it

I was using cases in other phones and never had that. Always took care of my phones and cases.... Are we using a case for beauty or in order NOT to have scratches? This happens due to 2 things , low quality of material and low quality of the cases...
You use a case to protect the phone from a 2-4 foot drop onto concrete.
Take what you have learned and move forward...

Question Switching from bulky cases

My Pixel 6 Pro doesn't seem to do a good job with heat dissipation in Arizona heat while having bulky cases on. I need some good recommendations of thin yet protective cases to switch to. Also one with a kickstand if possible, but it's not a deal breaker. Thank you in advance and hope to hear from you guys soon to alleviate the overheating problems and I've been having.
The UK hit 40c (104f) yesterday and i have to admit my Spigen Tough Armor case isn't the best choice for such weather what with all its foam padding etc. so i am thinking the same thing, a less bulky case, so I'm all ears as well.

It has dropped to a more normal for a UK summer 75f today much to everyone's relief.
Here's an idea for you;
I'm using a phone case that is made out of a combination of rubber and aluminum.
https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B09G1JW7TV
What you can probably do quite effectively, is cut out some of the rubber and replace it with a THERMAL PAD;
https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00UYTTMNI
Aluminum is very conductive, so switching the material between the phone and the aluminum case to another conductive material should do a pretty good job of bringing that heat out to the case and allowing it to dissipate effectively rather than trapping it under a non-conductive rubber/tpu/whatever case.
And if you really want to get effective with the heat dissipation and don't use magnetic charging, then add a piece of copper foil over the back of the phone below the camera where you can't trim the rubber, especially over the charging coil.
Been using this since day 2...
No heating issues and provides sufficient protection and is much less likely to fall from my hands compared to caseless which is about as slippery as if it were made from ice!

What the Pixel 6 range needs is something like a Spigen Tough Armour with loads of holes / slots in the back of it so it offers protection and cooling.

It actually is quite grippy compared to naked!
With nothing on it, this phone is downright SCARY to hold. All that glass feels very fragile, and way to small of bezels to get a proper grip on it without putting your fingers over the screen.

To be fair wet ice has more grip than the pixel 6 pro
Love this case on mine.

I use this case along with whitestone dome have it in black and red
I usually go with Spigen Liquid Air or Rugged Armor. Core Armor also seems to be a newcomer.
Pair with a Whitestone or other suitable tempered glass screen protector. I have never shattered a screen with the tempered glass and TPU case combo. I don't like hybrid or polycarbonate cases.
For people that need extreme performance or frequently drop their phones or throw them at walls, there's always the Otterbox Defender.
I'm a massive fan of Spigen cases but I got one of these by FTRONGRT mainly because of the camera bar protection, the fit is fine but I'd say the grip just isn't quite as good as a Spigen Rugged Armor. I'll just go back to my Spigen Tough Armor when autumn comes.

Huh, sounds very familiar, right down to a spelling error.
