[Q] ? Best Kernel for you rooted epic SRF 1.2 - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Wanting to try out different kernels on my phone..now running the vision kernel..what are you guys experiencing with the clean, genocide, and twilight kernels?

I have used all except clean and had best results with Vision. Ymmv
Sent from my lean mean drunken machine useing XDA Premium and a 12 pack of Sam Lager

Currently runnign Genocide 2.0, and the only issue I noted was battery drain.
But.. IMO, that may have more to do with my going back to the stock battery from the extended one, and my not being used to how much less it lasts. Kinda hard for me to judge at this point.

Wow...im noticing the same thing...i been tweaking all day...but i believe im going back to vision kernel...i was averaging 1 day 5 hrs with moderate use but thought i would give it a try!

where do you download vision kernel? the link seems to have been removed.

I will link to my drop box when I get to a pc.
Edit: figured out how to get link from phone

IIRC, Vision v1.2 had some issues where it could have been the cause for a few bricks. The developer took it down and told everyone to use v1.1.

Genocide 1.1 Final hands down!

+1 for Genocide 2.0, battery life could be a little better but it is still one of the best roms I have ever used.
Sent from my Epic4G using XDA

I usually end up back on Genocide 2.0. Not for any particular reason- I just like the fact that it has the highest OC. TZ was fine. Clean kernel was nice. Haven't tried Vision in a while. All in all, I didn't really notice any difference whatsoever in the use of the phone, OC or no OC, between the various kernels.
Though I'm suspect of the Voodoo sound version 10 included in G2.0. My audio has been 'skipping.' Considering going back a verison to 1.1 final as a test.
I usually have issues when flashing kernels though. Bouts of FCs to work through afterward. They clear up after a few reboots and wipes.

Its still not available to public yet.
It's available now, but I still think Fresh is better.
its a bad link ive downloaded it about 10 times it says 161mb but everytime it was 160.52mb
The newest available to the public is by using the QR code at

Is there an alternate link to the file ? The QR code is the same as the link to the same bad download

1.8 is better, I flashed the copy last night (thanx for the link) and I was very dissatisfied with it, themed green keyboard was lame, battery life sucks compared to V1.8, Fresh or baked 1.8 is good.

I just went from 1.7 to 1.9 and am noticing a huge difference in battery life, and not in a positive way. I am running Netarchy's toasted kernel which is what I was running under 1.7. Also have Setcpu running the phone underclocked during screen off.
Does anyone have a link to Bakedsnack 1.8? I would like to try that out and see the battery performance before I revert back to 1.7
Thanks.
...I do love the ROM though. If I didn't I wouldn't be looking for another version, rather I'd just be trying a different ROM out.

Syndicate Frozen 1.2 is best IMO (for now).
Less ppl seem to experience problems on it since its a ROM that's been worked on for a while, not to mention its branded with the legendary "ACS quality." AA's 2.3 Gingerbread EXT4 is also really good, but I will wait for an official release of 2.3 before I cross over. Either one is fully functioning, fast, and great with battery (YMMV)

Syndicate Frozen 1.2 is great! Great speed improvements and the battery life lasts me two days.
AA's i2 is sickly fast and battery seem to be great so far but for best battery life I'd good with Baked Snack v2.4 hands down! I could go for a lil over 2 days w/o charging when running 2.3 which was out months ago and 2.4 just came so I could only guess its better than before! I didnt run v2.4 for too long since AA droped i1 n i2 but for the days that I had v2.4 battery life was sick!

Try not to make thread titles to vague next time. Although you got a lot of good replies this time you may not be as lucky on the next. Plus its easier for people to find answers when they're searching if the topic is clearly defined. Welcome to the board. Don't let the trolls intimidate/annoy you.

Well, every ROM runs a little different on each of our Epics. If you want a good Gingerbread leak ROM, use one that has either Deca's or Crawrj's newly DeOdexed stock ROM as its base. Be kind guys, he only has 19 posts.

Just remember that EVERY phone is different so asking "what is the best ROM" is relative only to that user's experience. Some phones seem to not like custom ROMs at all and sometimes it is the user and then they complain about their problems. The easy answer is read up on the positives and negatives of a few and try one. The best thing is that there is tons of good people here willing to help if you run into trouble or a few Force Closes.

be sure to let your bro know that this phone is somewhat experimental. a lot of stuff needs to be fixed. honestly as of late, RandomKing's rom is awesome. ACS' are great too.
whatever rom you get make sure to use these patches/tweaks/fixes if they don't have em already:
theimpaler747's keyboard patch
qbking77's guide to modems
chris41g's rotation-lag fix

Good suggestions but just to clarify, you can't use TheImpaler's keyboard patch on Gingerbread ROMs like Random Hawk. The keyboard fix will come when the official comes out and we get source. Most of the Froyo EC05 ROMs have it baked in though

AHH forgot about that. thanks a lot for that clarification. At least from that provided link, OP can install the speed demon one because from what i remember, EC05 ROMs come with the default keyboard patch in them. At least it'll help him out in that sense? As far as the rotation lag fix goes, i know that Random Hawk has it already, but for some people it doesn't work, same with ERA's rom.
I really like the RandomKing HAWK so far.
I am pretty new to ROMS and really like this one.. not close to the highest quadrant scores, but feels the fastest and most stable to me.
I have ran EB13 VIPER 5.0, EC05 ACS Frozen 1.2 and now the RandomKing HAWK v.2.
Right now I have RandomKing with his included Chris14g kernel, EG22 modem, Supercharged v6 script, option 9, CPU is overclocked to 1.2Ghz, journaling is turned off.
Only had it a couple days, so we will see.

I have to agree with you there. If Quadrant benchmarks are your thing, Urban Decay flies.I get 3200+ marks at 1.2 with Tegrak. On Froyo..what Zander said. ERA ReVolt Revolution yields the highest Smartbench scores on a consistent basis. Its the only ROM other than Urban Regen that gives me 1600+ CPU marks and it does almost every time. It is fast!

ROM Ho
Once I started flashing I just couldn't stop...I did learn that after 20 flashes, the Amazon App Market stops letting you log in because each time you flash it captures it as a new device in your profile. To fix that just log into Amazon and delete the old/invalid entries.
Here are the ROMS I have had the privilege to try:
SyndicateROM Frozen 1.1
Urban Regeneration
Swiss Cheese Samsprint
EF02 Leak (stockish)
EG22 Leak (stockish)
Urban Inception
midNIGHT ROM
ACS Go Green
ERA Olympus (artist formermly know as Unamed)
ERA EpicuReAn SCrAMbLED EGgs22
RandomROM Hawk v2
Many people have already stated this, but it is really about personal preference as far as what will work best for you. There have been some ROMS that just did not play nice with my phone, but I am sure this is a phone by phone thing as well. My favorites by far are CK's Urban series and the RandomROM Hawk. I have ran with Hawk the longest (previously Osprey) and I have loved it. Although, I still miss my sexy Urban ROM at times. What it boiled down to for me was saving battery and RandomROM excels at this. Being unable to post on the development board, I do want to thank all of the devs who invest their personal time (especially those that don't even own an Epic anymore or work for the competition) to make our phones kick a$$. Thank You All!

[Q] Best kernel and rom combination for battery life?

So I decided to go back to an Epic instead of an Evo. I had the Epic when it first came out up until around January. Last things I remember from the Epic development scene was Herver and his Baked Snack Roms and Kernels. (what ever happened to him anyways?) I am obviously in no way familiar with the current crop of roms and kernels and would appreciate suggestions on where to start and I'll test combos to see what works best for me. Froyo and Gingerbread based Roms please.

I too am looking for the best battery life and I'm having trouble getting it. Currently trying out latest random rom for EC05 and its decent but nothing amazing, I've also loaded the super V6 memory script and the battery just doesn't hold up very well. Where can I get the old baked snack roms?
Sorry to let you guys down, but I can't seem to find the files for baked snack. I'll keep looking though.
i had excellent battery life on the bonsai rom and kernel
Rebirth + Genocide, 38 hrs. moderate use........
Syndicate frozen 1.2 and genocide 2.0 give me the best battery and stability so far, but random rom is a very close second, and then probably viper synergy 5.0. The gb leaks were good with battery too, but I had too many fc issues with them. I would love to try this baked snack I keep reading about though. I've seen a lot of random posts here and there mentioning it, and always boasting about the battery life on it. A pm with any info on its whereabouts would be greatly appreciated. Then again, syndicate 1.3 seems to be just around the corner too, so I'm really interested to see what's in store with that as well.

I am hooked on random rom hawk, battery life is amazing. It usually only drops about 1-2% an hour for me sitting idle. I have heard urban warfare is very good on battery life as well. Gingerbread leak roms are still pretty unstable at this point though. Only try them if you have a good backup procedure down, and are prepared to get hit with force closes and random reboots at any given time. If you need the stability, stick with EC05 roms.

Yes, It's another one of these

I need a ROM that fulfills the following reqs:
Stable: Must be stable as this is for a non techie so... yeah
Fast: Better performance then the original ROM
Good battery life: This is a MUST
Clean: No crapware preinstalled
And preferably gingerbread although if froyo is better...
Thanks guys
For the best battery life and speed it will need to be froyo since devs don't have GB source to work with. I always like the Bonsai froyo ROMs. Google Bonsai android for their site. I am currently using Hurricane 1.6 Gingerbread Rom but you have to do some tricks to make it stable and keep it from rebooting randomly.

Exactly what i'm looking for also. Bump.
Yeah... That wont work.I need something that wont crash if you give it 8 espresso shots and wait a few hours.
So i need something stable.
Stick with froyo if you want the best chance at stability. Syndicate rom frozen 1.2 has always been old trusty for me and a lot of others. Be sure to flash a kernel immediately after the rom, as it does not include one. Urban regeneration is another good choice. You almost can't go wrong with any of the great froyo roms at this point. As kenny said, there are ways to make gb roms run fairly stable, but it takes a lot of effort.

Well, since he didn't want to shill his own rom.. i'll sing it's praises.. randomrom phoenix 2.2 is awesome. super snappy, no freezes or crashing and does above average on battery life.
Simply AOSP 4.01 is also super fast, and very slimmed down. There are a decent number of options for Froyo roms that you should be happy with..
SRF 1.2 is my "trusty old axe" too... I like Twilight Zone kernel. Isn't there a fix out for the SU Binary issue with Genocide 2.0? I haven't tried it yet.
You can't go wrong with anything by Computerkid23 or Random, either...
