what is the best ROM for Samsung Epic 4g - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

so does anyone have any idea
ive seen Urban Decay and Random ROM 2.3 HAWK
and im wonder which is better of the 2 and is there a ROM that you consider better than those 2 please let me know
THANKS

Well, every ROM runs a little different on each of our Epics. If you want a good Gingerbread leak ROM, use one that has either Deca's or Crawrj's newly DeOdexed stock ROM as its base. Be kind guys, he only has 19 posts.

and the only reason im asking is cuz i dont know much about this phone, its my brother in laws...and he wanted me to root it and get a good rom on it
oh and now i got 20 posts so there

If he's ok with Froyo, SRF 1.2 is fast and stable. Just remember to flash a kernel and journaling on.

Yeah, SRF 1.2 is a great option if you want a ROM that is fast, stable, and everything works.

Just remember that EVERY phone is different so asking "what is the best ROM" is relative only to that user's experience. Some phones seem to not like custom ROMs at all and sometimes it is the user and then they complain about their problems. The easy answer is read up on the positives and negatives of a few and try one. The best thing is that there is tons of good people here willing to help if you run into trouble or a few Force Closes.

True. I love these threads, though. It gives me ideas when I consider experimenting. I rarely leave my setup.

be sure to let your bro know that this phone is somewhat experimental. a lot of stuff needs to be fixed. honestly as of late, RandomKing's rom is awesome. ACS' are great too.
whatever rom you get make sure to use these patches/tweaks/fixes if they don't have em already:
theimpaler747's keyboard patch
qbking77's guide to modems
chris41g's rotation-lag fix

Good suggestions but just to clarify, you can't use TheImpaler's keyboard patch on Gingerbread ROMs like Random Hawk. The keyboard fix will come when the official comes out and we get source. Most of the Froyo EC05 ROMs have it baked in though

AHH forgot about that. thanks a lot for that clarification. At least from that provided link, OP can install the speed demon one because from what i remember, EC05 ROMs come with the default keyboard patch in them. At least it'll help him out in that sense? As far as the rotation lag fix goes, i know that Random Hawk has it already, but for some people it doesn't work, same with ERA's rom.

I really like the RandomKing HAWK so far.
I am pretty new to ROMS and really like this one.. not close to the highest quadrant scores, but feels the fastest and most stable to me.
I have ran EB13 VIPER 5.0, EC05 ACS Frozen 1.2 and now the RandomKing HAWK v.2.
Right now I have RandomKing with his included Chris14g kernel, EG22 modem, Supercharged v6 script, option 9, CPU is overclocked to 1.2Ghz, journaling is turned off.
Only had it a couple days, so we will see.

good setup, but if you're worried about quadrant scores, the highest for me was actually computerkid's rom. that little jerk man, he's amazing. his roms are awesome.

ReVolted ROM "fat free" with the built in ReVolted kernel flies.

I have to agree with you there. If Quadrant benchmarks are your thing, Urban Decay flies.I get 3200+ marks at 1.2 with Tegrak. On Froyo..what Zander said. ERA ReVolt Revolution yields the highest Smartbench scores on a consistent basis. Its the only ROM other than Urban Regen that gives me 1600+ CPU marks and it does almost every time. It is fast!

+1 To SRF 1.2
I tried tons of roms.. always come back to this one.

ROM Ho
Once I started flashing I just couldn't stop...I did learn that after 20 flashes, the Amazon App Market stops letting you log in because each time you flash it captures it as a new device in your profile. To fix that just log into Amazon and delete the old/invalid entries.
Here are the ROMS I have had the privilege to try:
SyndicateROM Frozen 1.1
Urban Regeneration
Swiss Cheese Samsprint
EF02 Leak (stockish)
EG22 Leak (stockish)
Urban Inception
midNIGHT ROM
ACS Go Green
ERA Olympus (artist formermly know as Unamed)
ERA EpicuReAn SCrAMbLED EGgs22
RandomROM Hawk v2
Many people have already stated this, but it is really about personal preference as far as what will work best for you. There have been some ROMS that just did not play nice with my phone, but I am sure this is a phone by phone thing as well. My favorites by far are CK's Urban series and the RandomROM Hawk. I have ran with Hawk the longest (previously Osprey) and I have loved it. Although, I still miss my sexy Urban ROM at times. What it boiled down to for me was saving battery and RandomROM excels at this. Being unable to post on the development board, I do want to thank all of the devs who invest their personal time (especially those that don't even own an Epic anymore or work for the competition) to make our phones kick a$$. Thank You All!

rom: Syndicate Frozen 1.2

I flashed srf 1.2 a few days back. It was my first time rooting. Wanted a rom that would improve my phone without causing a bunch of hassle. I can say, so far that this is EXACTLY that rom. Flawless performance and amazing look and speed. Followed qbkings video to the T then flashed the emotionless beast resurrection theme. Its been running so damn good. My only issues are with the features I don't know much about yet - galaxy tuner, voodoo, voltage control, etc. Need to do my homework on that stuff but couldn't be happier otherwise.

Can we combine all these "best ROM" threads from this month , and Ill agree SRF 1.2 or AA i3 atm, but they are all pretty smooth, even ones not found on xda, I've flashed all, and try to pull the best parts out to use on my ROM... When GB becomes official I'm going to try real hard to get some help with some things to make it more epic; As time goes on my skills are getting better, I'm even looking into writting code, just at a really slow pace...

Like Mystery said, try different ones out, mix em up. Updates regularly pop out for different roms, some roms only exist on different forums, etc. And now there's Gingerbread betas to choose from along with the fantastic Frozen Yogurt roms, so give them all a try! Mileage may vary per person... Only way to be sure!
The Bonsai Rom is the best.
Bonsai 5.0.0.b11.
It is the best because it is fast and stable and it is only in the Beta stages. Everything works plus it is an Ext-4 Gingerbread Rom. The developer is very nice and responsive too.

[Q] Best kernel and rom combination for battery life?

So I decided to go back to an Epic instead of an Evo. I had the Epic when it first came out up until around January. Last things I remember from the Epic development scene was Herver and his Baked Snack Roms and Kernels. (what ever happened to him anyways?) I am obviously in no way familiar with the current crop of roms and kernels and would appreciate suggestions on where to start and I'll test combos to see what works best for me. Froyo and Gingerbread based Roms please.

I too am looking for the best battery life and I'm having trouble getting it. Currently trying out latest random rom for EC05 and its decent but nothing amazing, I've also loaded the super V6 memory script and the battery just doesn't hold up very well. Where can I get the old baked snack roms?
Sorry to let you guys down, but I can't seem to find the files for baked snack. I'll keep looking though.
i had excellent battery life on the bonsai rom and kernel
Rebirth + Genocide, 38 hrs. moderate use........
Syndicate frozen 1.2 and genocide 2.0 give me the best battery and stability so far, but random rom is a very close second, and then probably viper synergy 5.0. The gb leaks were good with battery too, but I had too many fc issues with them. I would love to try this baked snack I keep reading about though. I've seen a lot of random posts here and there mentioning it, and always boasting about the battery life on it. A pm with any info on its whereabouts would be greatly appreciated. Then again, syndicate 1.3 seems to be just around the corner too, so I'm really interested to see what's in store with that as well.

I am hooked on random rom hawk, battery life is amazing. It usually only drops about 1-2% an hour for me sitting idle. I have heard urban warfare is very good on battery life as well. Gingerbread leak roms are still pretty unstable at this point though. Only try them if you have a good backup procedure down, and are prepared to get hit with force closes and random reboots at any given time. If you need the stability, stick with EC05 roms.

I also would like to try backed snack so if anyone has the url t the rom or anything can you please let me know

Im gonna have to try ViperRom...even though it's outdated

Yes, It's another one of these

I need a ROM that fulfills the following reqs:
Stable: Must be stable as this is for a non techie so... yeah
Fast: Better performance then the original ROM
Good battery life: This is a MUST
Clean: No crapware preinstalled
And preferably gingerbread although if froyo is better...
Thanks guys
For the best battery life and speed it will need to be froyo since devs don't have GB source to work with. I always like the Bonsai froyo ROMs. Google Bonsai android for their site. I am currently using Hurricane 1.6 Gingerbread Rom but you have to do some tricks to make it stable and keep it from rebooting randomly.

Exactly what i'm looking for also. Bump.
Yeah... That wont work.I need something that wont crash if you give it 8 espresso shots and wait a few hours.
So i need something stable.
Stick with froyo if you want the best chance at stability. Syndicate rom frozen 1.2 has always been old trusty for me and a lot of others. Be sure to flash a kernel immediately after the rom, as it does not include one. Urban regeneration is another good choice. You almost can't go wrong with any of the great froyo roms at this point. As kenny said, there are ways to make gb roms run fairly stable, but it takes a lot of effort.

Well, since he didn't want to shill his own rom.. i'll sing it's praises.. randomrom phoenix 2.2 is awesome. super snappy, no freezes or crashing and does above average on battery life.
Simply AOSP 4.01 is also super fast, and very slimmed down. There are a decent number of options for Froyo roms that you should be happy with..
SRF 1.2 is my "trusty old axe" too... I like Twilight Zone kernel. Isn't there a fix out for the SU Binary issue with Genocide 2.0? I haven't tried it yet.
You can't go wrong with anything by Computerkid23 or Random, either...

Are there any ROMs that actually work

I am also not sure how to approach this. There are only a few roms that don't support wimax.. I suggest calkulins. It's my go to rom. I've heard starburst is pretty good too.. But in the future, please try to read a bit. maybe look at the roms that have a lot of view and/or comments. The OP of each thread will tell you just about everything you need to know.
IMO, there is no more stable custom ROM right now then UnNamed. If I wasn't so flash happy, I would stay with that but I'm changing ROMs every 2-3 days now...
But anyway, yeah UnNamed is the best ROM as far as stability is concerned.
Oh and I got over a day of moderate use from it. Don't believe me though, try it out!

I've been extremely pleased with Calkulin's ROM. I have tried unnamed (which I also like) but I prefer the 5 icon dock and 5x5 app drawer and undervolt/underclock scripts in Calkulin's.

MJHawaii is right.. UnNamed is a hell of a rom especially with a few tweaks added in. I am quite sure you will not find anyone unhappy with it. Also like mentioned before there is a whole development section of great roms. Just make sure when you try them all you do not restore data and flash all of them cleanly and not on top of each other.
For battery life on this phone may I recommend 200-800 since your phone can clearly handle it...
no offence, but either dont flash and stay on stock or there is always the good ol flip phones!

blazer is my daily driver.
i have not tried a single rom that has just flat out been unstable or unusable though; i steer clear of early/experimental builds, bust most of the roms in the dev section for this phone are pretty complete and comprehensive.
this is my first android device and initially i had trouble just rooting the thing, but thanks to xda's dev section my first flash was a piece of cake and i've had no issues or major complaints in 3 months of jumping rom to rom.
Just an observation. But your avatar shows you have at&t, shouldn't you be in a different section? This forum is for the Samsung epic 4g touch. Maybe thats why the roms aren't working. Unless you just havent updated your profile. (Im guilty of that as well)

[Q] Starburst vs Blazer

I am looking for a complete feature list for Starburst and Blazer to determine the difference between the two. I have read the feature list for both roms but the Blazers feature lists "Other Tweaks, Hacks, and Mods" which could be anything. Further some of the features listed for Blazer are a bit vague. I have downloaded both roms in hopes that there would be a list of features but alas they do not contain one. Could someone please point me to a complete features list or explain to me the difference between the two. Thanks in advance.
your best bet would be to post this question in that roms thread, although since you are a 1 time poster, you might not get anyone willing to answer your question, since its a really detailed, specific question..
good luck

That is where I originally attempted to post this question but since I do not have the 10 posts required I was reduced to asking here, but I appreciate the response. Maybe with a bit of luck my question will still get answered here.
Frankly, with this phone, and the roms that are out there now,"newer" is usually better; I never ran Starburst, but I did run Blazer and it is a very nice rom; it was more of a stock experience than I care for, so I use other more heavily themed roms now, but, I think he just released version 3.6, which looks to be themed heavily like how ICS is gonna look..

I would tend to agree with you. According to the wiki for the rom database they were both updated on 01.05.12, so it comes back to features.

Yeah Blazer is looking good from the screenshots. I was going to stray away from miui for a bit to flash it but from when I downloaded it last night to a moment ago, the damn file just disappeared. Oh well. To the OP, Blazer would be your best bet since PH tends to favor that one more and updates it frequently.

Starburst has the lockmod by maddogin and is themed green. Blazer will not (I personally don't like the mod and blazer is my main rom atm)and is themed ics. Blazer also has a 4g toggle which will not be implemented in star burst. Otherwise performance is equal.

Thanks for the advice. Also when reading the features that Blazer has compared to Starburst, I almost get the impression that Blazer contains everything Starburst has but also has some extra battery tweaks. Maybe I am missing something?

Thank you for the quick response. This answers all my current questions and allows me to make an informed decision. Thanks again to everyone!
i personally think that the blazer mod feels smoother and a lil bit faster if you like the starburst theme go for it if you like the sleek ics theme blazer but blazer> starburst =D
