[Q] Cannot Get Past ClockworkMod Recovery - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am hoping someone can help me with a problem I'm having with my Epic 4G...
Problem:
I am in a bit of a pickle at the moment as everytime I reboot my phone it goes directly to ClockWorkMod (CWM). I was previously on Syndicate Frozen ROM (SFR) 1.0.2 with CWM 3.0.0.x (orange) and attempting to upgrade to SFR 1.2.
Background:
I booted into CWM and made a back up, then loaded SFR 1.2. I got a bunch of FCs, so I reverted back to my back up. I then upgraded to CWM 3.1 (purple) and tried to flash to SFR 1.2 again. This worked, but none of my data was saved.
I decided that I would restore my backup, save my data another way and then re-import it once I had reloaded SFR 1.2. Unfortunately, it looks like trying to load a CWM Orange backup in CWM Purple will result in a failed MD5 checksum.
I reloaded CWM Orange and tried to load my backup and I still get a checksum error. At this point I don't know what else to try.
Anyone have any ideas/sugestions?

Odin back to stock EC05 and try it again from the beginning; that's what I did when I had this issue.
You will loose any apps not on an SD card i believe.

Yep. I had a buddy who is familiar with flashing come by and that is exactly what he did. What a waste of an afternoon! :\
I kept getting the error message: "Error while flashing boot image" until I reinstalled CWM 3.0.0.5. Only then was I able to restore my backup.
Just out of curiosity: if I now upgrade to CWM Purple and then back up will I be able to backup and restore my current version?

I believe nandroid backups from 3.0.0.5/6 will not work with 3.0.2.5 but 3.0.2.5 nandroids will restore on purple 3.1.0.1. It is best to do a clean install. There are framework changes on 1.2 including the 6 lock mod baked in so restoring data will most likely corrupt your ROM. Best bet is to flash 1.2, then a kernel then install all apps fresh. I use Appbak app to store a list of all installed apps. Then I can fire down the list and install them fresh.

How do you do a nandroid backup with the Desire?

I have a rooted desire and never really tried restoring a backup and when I finally did I came across this error message:
No SD ext found. skipping backup of SD EXT
Generating MD5 sum
error while checking md5 sum!
chcking md5 sum....
MD5 mismatch!
My SD card has no partition whatsoever and I'm using fake flash by paul. My old phone was a N1 and I had no problem whatsoever doing this before. Is making a backup and restoring in the Desire an entirely different process?
Also how do you automatically backup apps in the Market? Meaning if I switch roms and just logged into my Google account the market would automatically "restore" my old apps. I used to be able to do this once in a while with my old N1 but I couldn't do it consistently. With my Desire I can't do it at all.
Thanks
It will give that error if you have no ext partition on your sd card. If you're not using apps 2 sd then you need not worry about it.
Other than that, try the latest clockwork recovery (2.0.1.4) and try a nandroid backup and restore.

Nandroid backup seems to work and I do get to see the file but when I try to restore it fails! Do I need to make an extension for it to work?
What about restoring apps from the marketplace via the internet? Like I said, I've done it a few times with my N1 wherein it automatically restores everything once I log in my Google account.
Thanks
Try creating an ext partition, convert ext2 to ext3. If it fails again, try backing up and restoring using the Nand using the latest Clockwork Recovery (2.0.0.7).
Your apps are linked to your Google account so when you sign in, they should be available for manual download.
You could also backup and restore your apps and data to your sd card using Titanium backup or MyBackup Pro (available from the Marketplace).

Apps are indeed linked but how do they become restored automatically? Like I said, I've done it before on my N1 with "applications restored" showing up on the notification bar.
Where do I get the latest clockwork recovery? Tried looking at the forums and came up empty. I just followed Paul's guide for rooting. Still don't understand why I can't restore from a nandroid.
thanks
I am not aware of any method to restore apps automatically from the Marketplace, i do it manually unless using a backup and restore app.
Try reading the fake flash thread on MoDaCo as i remember people had reported the same issue you are experiencing. What version of fake flash are you currently using?
You will find the Clockwork Recovery as an option in the ROM Manager app, which you can download from the Marketplace.

The easiest method is to use unreEVOked (link).
The earlier version of unreEVOked installed a much earlier version of clockwork recovery, and I found that the nandroid backup didn't work properly - it would seem to backup (albeit too quickly), but you couldn't restore due to the MD5 problem. I think it didn't actually ever complete the backup and generate the MD5s.
Version 2 hopefully fixes that problem - certainly Nandroid backups take a lot longer!

Dave
Thanks guys.
Will look into unrevoked and try to get it to work. I'll also try to update my fake flash. I have been using the very first version when it came out and never really updated it lol
Updated my fake flash and it worked! Thanks guys!
Didn't know that the clockwork recovery was embedded into fake flash. I thought it was just an enabler or something.
Thanks again!
If you use unrEVOked you don't need Fake Flash, or vice versa.

Dave
Have still yet to try unrevoked, what exactly does it do when I plug it into my desire? Does it make me run Amon Ra's N1 recovery image? No more screen with the red triangle?

No problem bud, glad it worked out for you
When you enter Recovery, it loads the recovery image straight away, so you get a permanent custom recovery image when you hold power + home.
Will try it out thanks again! Currently experimenting with the Rom manager application. It's pretty neat and u can update the recovery image instantly. I take it as something like an app inside ur phone? Always there in the background waiting to be used?
Hi, is anyone else having the problem that ClockWorkMod 2.5.0.1 just hangs after "Backing up system..." when trying to do a Nandroid backup?
Backup worked fine with 2.0.x.x (the one that came with Unrevoked3), but now I can't seem to complete a backup. Haven't even tried restoring yet...
Trying to run a ROM backup using ROM Manager and Nandriod Backup but both go to a screen with a red triangle
Phone is rooted and running Defrost
I want to update to defrost 6.1
Any other way of backing up the ROM ?
Thanks

Boot in to recovery manually and back up or clear the download cache in rom manager and reflash clockworkmod. If it still fails try to disable signature verification in recovery (under install zip form sd)
I can't get to recovery though thats the problem.
How do you reflash clockworkmod ? Through ROM Manager ?
yes, first option when you open rom manager
Cashe cleared, then I tried to run the update ROM option selected back up and clear data etc.
Went straight to a red triangle, will now try and see about changing this clockworkmod
Thanks.
Ran the re-flash clockwork option, first one on the list, still gets the red triangle of noness.

Random issues since failed rom install

I attempted to install Mikfroyo, and for whatever reason it failed and left me in a perpetual boot loop. I recovered a previous nand, and now I'm having issues with my unlock and everything is running considerably slower. I've tried to wipe several times and recover but to no avail. What should I do now? I'm using clockwork recovery should I switch to AmonRA? Thanks for the help
what unlock method did you use?
I would try wiping and reflashing and see if it fixes the issues. It seems weird that you are haivng them after you nand as it should revert everything back. you didnt change anything else or add any app theme kernel?
This is going from bad to worse it won't recover from a previous nandroid back up now it gets stuck at Checking Md5 Sums and then nothing. Is clockwork the only way to wipe this thing or can I wipe it another way and just load a new ROM?
if you can get Amon Ra recovery isntalled you can try that I have problems now again with clockwork ussually reflashign it or using amon works
Dont freak out if you dont see your nandback ups thorugh amon ra. It looks in a diffrent place. you have 2 options youc an either wipe data with amon and try to flash the update.zip to clockwork and nandroiding or you can move the back up from clockwork>backup to a new directoty on the root of your SD card called backup.
once in the correct folder amon will see and be able to restore them.
download rom manager from the market and use it to reinstall clockwork. If already says you have the latest version of clockwork installed, use it to install AR and just use AR going forward (just don't try restoring a clockwork nand with AR), or use it again to reinstall clockwork after you've successfully installed AR.

Is a backup in CWM 3.0.0.0 compatible with CWM 2.5.x.x?

So, I've decided I'm going to use ROM Manager to flash a previous version of CWM (2.5.1.4). I'm currently running the 3.0.0.2 but feel stuck from all the reports I've been reading about the latest version not being compatible with older hboot and partitions. I'm scared to do anything...
Anyways, while in 3.0.0.0 I did a back up. Is this going to be compatible with the older version or should I do another one after flashing back?
Also, I don't remember it actually saying "nandroid". It just said "backup". This is the same I'm assuming as it took quite a while to do???
Ok, never mind. Apparently I'm trying to flash that older version and it keeps coming back with an error.
Worked for me.
I restore a 2.x.x backup trough 3.x.x and had CWM 2.x.x then after I backed up some apps with titanium backup I went back to the rom I backed up with 3.x.x and all went fine.
Little confusing but yes I believe you can.

If you want 2.5 again go to post #7 in this thread. Put the file on your sd and power down into bootloader. It will scan the card then ask if you want to update, hit volume up for yes and you're done. Thread- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=894227
Sweet!!! I just flashed back to the older 2.5.x.x CWM and then flashed a ROM with no problems at all. The only thing that's weird is that ROM Manager still says I have CWM 3.0.0.2.

[Q] CWM 3 Backup?

I flashed the new ACS 1.1 from the 1.02 version but am getting stuck in boot loop. If I do a back up with CWM then odin and reflash back to the new rom can I do a restore and get my apps and data back?

You can use advanced restore to pull data and apps from the backup.
Here is a nice guide on ClockworksMod

[Help] Cannot flash, wipe, or nandroid

So, I've been using TWRP since I purchased this device. I did a TWRP backup today as usual since I wanted to flash back to TouchWiz to update my PRL. I did so, then went to restore my backup. Only part of the backup restored. Now, no matter what I do in TWRP, I get the same error:
E error opening 'data/data/com.newegg.app/share (there's more text here but it's truncated by the recovery)
E error: Not a directory
This happens when I try to wipe (any option), flash a ROM, create a backup, restore a backup, etc. I've updated from TWRP 2.5 to 2.6.3, still to no avail. I don't believe it's a recovery issue. Recoveries don't just stop working, especially after using Odin to write a new recovery partition.
My ROM is screwed up. It boots, but no apps open. The hardware keys don't work (except home).
Any ideas or suggestions? I don't really want to switch to CWM but will if absolutely necessary.
Thanks!
I would suggest doing an ODIN back to Stock. Make sure everything is working correctly. Then Root the Device again.
I did something similar. I used a flash to stock and reset counter .zip that worked. It still threw that newegg error, but once I rebooted, reinstalled twrp, rooted, flashed Slim 4.3 Stable 2 and did another nandroid, the weird error is now gone. So glad I didn't ruin my phone! Thanks!
Your welcome. Happy you got the issue resolved .
