Good thread! I'm very intrested to see wich ROM has the better battery life!

As far as I know - DeFroST is based on OD. So nothing to compare or vote here.

I had very bad surprises with both roms.
But I think the real problem are some apps.
Camera360 for example kills your battery in 2 hours.
So I don't vote

Defrost is completely build from source with cyanogenmod packages and framework. Kernel is different also (no overvolt [email protected]). Look at my github: http://github.com/richardtrip/

Thank you Richard. So there will be different battery life between the 2 ROM's. People need to stop saying that DeFroST is a total rip from OpenDesire.

I agree.
There WAS a time when OD and DF is almost similar inside out but as of lately both ROMs are very much different.
But on the question of which had better battery life my vote goes to DF. OD seems to be unstable lately and has turned out to be more experimental then stable (e.g implementation of multitouch droid keyboard, switching to HTC keyboard and now infusing elements from Galaxy S). I had more better power drain on DF and CM6.

Cor, this all seems familiar.
Anyway, instead of polls which to be frank are worthless in this regard, has anyone actually done any measured testing between battery lives of different versions of different ROMs? That might actually be useful and interesting.

how can an app which only runs when you open it explicitly drain the battery in 2 hours (unless you sit there with the camera on for 2 hours)

I've very bad experience with OpenDesire battery... I can't say the same about DeFrost, wich has a good battery life

I was once with OpenDesire a few days ago and don't consider going back because one night i had 59% battery charge and woke up the next morning finding that it's dead.
Going back to DefroST and running my same old apps that i previously had on OD works just fine. With my phone with plenty of charge the next morning

i think this thread would be more useful if people would give their specific experiences with the roms they use the most, as i'm sure there are quite a number of people that haven't tried one or the other long enough to give substantial feedback. i think people should include:
which version of the rom(s) they tested/used
what kind of battery life they experienced and with what type of usage (i know it's subjective and everyone gets different results, but it's better than just voting for the rom you used and saying it's the best)
length of time that was allowed to test (there have been occasions where rebooting or going through a complete charging cycle have yielded better battery life. so it should be noted if people only allowed the rom they tested to be on their phone for maybe 20% or whatever, or a couple of hours)
and any other information people think might help/be useful to others
also what radio people are running would be very useful as well

This is a development forum.
I think that this type of thread are useless, since battery life is too "personal" to sort with a silly poll.
Battery life is meant to be professionally tested with some program, with the same device. One can have faulty battery, another one can have a non calibrated battery, another one a new battery.

I tried DeFrost just for a while to see Quadrant score. So I can't say something certain about it's battery life. But OpenDesire I'm using rigt now has great battery life. I mentioned that today in OD thread also. With normal use(Web, lots of messaging, GPS etc. 768 mhz cpu speed (it does 1300 Quadrant score with that speed) and 2G mobile network) I've used it for 70 hours. Really impressive I think.

For what reason?

soooo many different aspects to battery life that just asking randomly to 'vote' is indeed not helping too much.
I won't say it as blunt as 'please close this thread' but really helpful it's not.
For example, what if - eehhhhm, let's pick Defrost - DeFrost comes out as 75% voting to have better battery life. A new user comes in, sees DeFrost as better, and picks that one. His battery drains within an hour, and he is thinking "WTF?!? insert random roob rage stuff here WTF!?!?!"
This happens all the time. Battery usage users are _so_ different based on usage, network provider, location and apps used / installed that the ROM really doesn't have much influence.
Only if there is a real 'bug' it's noticeable, and the dev's are quickly on it then.

I have been through just about all on this site and Fresh's newest seems to work best for me. With moderate daily usage I can go without charging for about 22-24 hours. Of course all I need to go is 12-14 b/c I charge every night anyway, but I did leave off charger one day just to see how far I could go. I'm giving Calk's latest a try right now to see how it goes. Just be sure to give whatever ROM you try a couple charges before making a final decision, as it usually takes this amount to get an accurate read on true battery life.

I know that the latest kernels off the latest build have been killing my battery, it's horrible for my EVO.
But you really have to try different rom/kernel/PRI/radio combinations to find the best battery life for your Evo. I wish there was a preset rating system for each rom though, just to see how things work for everyone else(i.e. battery life, quadrant scores, force close problems, etc.)...but there really are a lot of variables, so I don't think that may ever happen.

Yeah I agree there isn't a clear cut winner. Everyone uses their phone different so it will differ for everyone.
Totally agree to give it a few full charges... I suggest when you get a new rom and/or kernel installed to reset the battery stats (can be done in recovery) then use it till it dies then charge to full before turning it back on.
Personally, I've been using Fresh 3.3 w/ the Kings #6 kernel and not only has the phone been screamin' fast the battery has been good. I'm only on my 2nd charge up though so I still have one or two to go before everything smooths out.

As posted here, the tests showed that CM w/ Snap 7.5 probably has the best battery life - and it seems by a lot.

I'm using the latest Fresh and I just plugged my phone in at 15% battery after 37 hours. I'm pretty happy with that.

Fresh Rom always gave me good battery.. I'm just using the rooted stock OTA and am getting great battery life.

Until someone takes the time to make a section that covers the different problems. Battery problems, Battery Problems w/ ROMS, Apps not loading, etc. etc.

I think it would be a great idea for this kind of stuff to happen. Some aggregated source where everyone can submit their information using various roms, kernels, etc. Whether it be information regarding Quadrant scores, linpacks or battery life. On computer hardware forums they generally have a section dedicated to OCing records with charts listing someones entire setup while attaining the clock speeds. I don't see why a similar implementation can not be done here.

i use Fresh's Rom made my battery life live avg abt 15 hours

Over 40 kernels were tested and benchmarked in 7 different ways, and the results are posted here.
Should tell you everything you want to know, without bringing roms into the picture (since battery life is most affected by the kernel used, not the rom)
edit - looks like I'm a bit late withthat link - I see the thread for that site was already posted above. It's a great resource.

Fresh 3.2, hands down best battery life for me. 3.3 was pretty bad, as was myn's release....which sucks, because myn's rom is otherwise awesome.

I am using Fresh 3.3.0.1 with a baked kernel that is able to over clock. I then have SetCPU installed with profiles for different states of the phone. If my screen is off I have the cpu set to a max of 500MHz to save battery if there are any processes running in the background. I then have my cpu set to 1119MHz when the phone is plugged in or at 100% with the screen on just because I like a snappy phone. Then when the battery drops below 50% I have it return to stock speeds.
I use my phone heavily for things like subsonic, QIK, FB, Calendar, wireless tether, and of course since unlimited data, calling to any cell, and texting I am on it a lot keeping in touch with friends. I also use the sprint nav at least twice a week.
Results will vary from user to user but so far the phone has been on 7 hours and after some moderate use it's only down to around 75% on the battery.
Again this is how I MYSELF use my phone with this rom and kernel this may not be how you use your phone and you may see different results.
What I have done is searched roms and installed them in total I have used 4 different roms. Baked, Cyanogen, Fresh, and Virus. After installing each rom and setting up my phone I made a nand backup of each so I can flash between them as needed to test. I have found out of all of these roms Fresh 3.3.0.1 with a kernel from the baked roms has worked the best for MY daily use.

This topic has been talked about many many times before... but i would say that virtuous g-lite has one of the best battery life out of all the roms, although it comes down to user experience

has been asked 100000+ times. Its not necessarily the specific ROM, but how you use it and what features you choose to leave out in order to extend life.
No matter what ROM you use, there are probably UV and under-clocked kernels, which can help battery life. Also, doing things like turning off 3G/4G data when you're not using it, turning down brightness, and turning off GPS/BT/WiFi when not in use, reducing gmail/twitter/facebook/g+ sync, etc. etc. etc. will all help.

im having the best with bulletproof....went 2.5 days with light usage

i've tried CM7, MIUI, Virtuous Unity and Virtuous G-Lite and out of those G-Lite is the definite winner and is the one I've stuck with...

i might have to give it another chance

definitely not MIUI ! as for me CM7.1 was the best with 2 day while MIUI is only 1 day with a lot of SMS and few data

I can usually get about a day and a half out of glite with wifi on and screen at 60% brightness. Definitely over 2 days if you turn on juice defender...

Agree. There's so many variables, and ROM might not even be the most important factor. For instance, what radio are you using, is it RIL matched to the ROM, and is it the best radio for your local area?
People complain about Sense ROMs draining battery. But I'm on Unity (with the radio recommended in the Unity thread, also in my sig), and get over 2 days with fairly light usage.

It may not be all about the rom but i can say that I am using the stock radio that came with my G2 for all of the roms I have tried and there is a definite difference in the battery life between them. MIUI was definitely the worst for me, then unity and cm7 and the best has been glite. I haven't changed anything beyond the rom. Usage across all of them was fairly consistent.
Really unity and cm7 were pretty good. But MIUI was very noticeably worse. And glite has been noticeably better.
Whether I am right or wrong, that has been my experience.

A bit off topic, but consider using Juice defender as an alternative. It turns off your internet while you're phone's screen is locked. For my personal uses, it would work great, but I just manually leave my internet off until I need it. I hate having less than 50% battery life at any time. ( I carry about 3 spare batteries just in case I feel the use to play PSX)

Yeah juice defender does do a pretty fantastic job of saving battery while being the least amount of intrusive as possible. That being said, even though it does turn on mobile data pretty fast upon waking up the screen, it still is a few seconds before the connection is reestablished. also, even if you have it set to turn on data for 1 minute every 15 minutes (or whatever you set it to) it is still preventing instant updates to emails and such.
For that reason I only use juice defender when i know I am going to be away from my charger for a long while since it is only the slightest bit inconvenient. It does really cut down on battery use though.
I don't think i have used JD since i switched to glite however since as long as my battery lasts a full day (it does) then i am always able to plug my phone in before I go to sleep.

A lot of people say AOSP ROMs are good on battery life cuz the sense is gone.
Try out Xplod RLS (one of my favs) test it out see how it goes for you. It's an AOSP btw.
For sense I recommend Tommytomatoes Classic v0.0.0.4 its awesome!

How long does your battery last? Are you running mobile data all day? GPS?
I can get around 20-24 hours put of my battery with real heavy usage. Around 2 days with normal use.
I keep my 3g and everything off until i need it.

On Classic I'm gettin roughly about 1d 19h 43m with pretty decent usage text, call, xda, browsing jus putting it to charge right now

I have always had the best success with AOSP and custom kernel.
Currently running ICSmod7 with latest tiamets. With 4g it drops fast but without I get through a full day no worries medium use. Text, fb, music during workout ect...

Getting good battery life with MikG 2.61.

mikg rom to me is best for battery life .and very stable rom and clean so try and let us know .im running miui and battery life is pretty good but not as good as my mikg rom

I've been experimenting with ROMs and kernels for the last 18 months, always looking for best battery life with regular to heavy use. A good custom kernel will sometimes give you an extra 10-15 %. Using setCPU or another app like systemtuner (my pref) to turn CPU down while screen off can also give you 5-10%. Far and away the best thing for my battery is to use an alternative launcher (ADW for me) and then use Titanium backup pro or systemtuner to freeze sense. you just find the two elements in the process list that start with "HTC sense" and freeze them. Night and day. FYI I run synergy and have always come back to Myn's ROMs cause they are good for battery from the start, but they also take well to pretty much any custom kernel, which isn't true for all ROMs. I like everything to work so I always ditch AOSP ROMs a few days after trying them.

Underclocking your CPU typically causes higher battery drain... unless you're overclocking. As long as nothing is really hammering the CPU in the background (which is the problem, not the CPU speed!), then it's better to let the CPU enter higher power states in order to finish the work quicker and return to low power sleep state. Intel calls this HUGI (Hurry Up and Get Idle). Overclocking can have bad effects with HUGI due to the higher voltage required to run at those frequencies. Lol'd at your AOSP comment though. I suppose some people are okay with subpar android, aka sense .

Tommytomatoes The Classic is a solid sense rom with good battery life its fast as hell, has lots of mods and themes and is pretty sick I've been stuck on it for over a month now I've flashed other roms but always come back to the classic after a few hours

Underclocking is when you set the speed of the processor to a lower setting than the stock clocks where as undervolting is lowering the voltage needed to run it at a certain speed be it stock underclocked or overclocked. Simplest way I understand it.

Ya this is one of the main reasons behind bad batt.. Sprint and other carriers allow a company to monitor and chart everything we do and it mirrors off txts and data sent and is designed to pick up on.key words... Basically an Invasive tracking monitor. It's a huge in noticed drain... And its been shown to be removed from system/app in many custom roms. But it never does cause its so strattled throughout the OS.

I have been using evodeck v1.3 with the lee kernel and the rom just sips on my battery and gives me outstanding battery life with amazing speeds

[Q] Best GB ROM that has greatest battery life

I dont use my phone a lot and my TWAS is usually 0%. I dont use my phone alot, but usually when 5-6 hrs of no use or very light use it has gone down around 20-30%. Anyone have any ideas of what rom would work best for me? I am on ICS 5.0 right now and it seems they are not coming back with their 5.5 they had out. I really only care about great battery life and having some type of hotspot hack or free tethering.

I have been using the latest sleeper rom and i have left it at 1000mhz no overclocking and i seem to be getting better battery life than i was with some of the others. i flash frequently and i would agree with kennyglass in that each one works differently. so try for youself.

Well, like everyone else said, its depends on what your phones handles. Everyone phones handles a rom differently, well, not that differently, but enough to make big differences.
Like the guy above me, I also use SleeperRom. Its a very stable, battery efficient rom.

I've gotten 21 hours out of legendary 2.1 and samurai 3.0.4 ill post a screenshot. It was with low signal areas and moderate use and 2 hours + with music running.

My wifes phone while at work would drain in 8 hours to the point that it was saying charge me every day. Now with Clean GB on hers it lasts about 2 days with light usage. Again YMMV.

Im on clean GB and getting great battery life. After 11 hrs of moderate use I still have 30 % battery left. After 8 hours of heavy use I'm at 30%. Very stable ROM.. No force closes or wierd issues.

I personally would towards 'which kernel should I use?' You've got to remember that although we all have epics, not every CPU is the same. What I am running it he or she is running may not be what you should be running. If you ever check out an oc/uv thread, you will see that people get different results using different settings, even though we're all on epics. You've got to try a couple different setups (roms AND kernels) to see which runs best for your device. Good luck!

I currently use CleanGB which has been pretty great. If you're in an area with iffy service, that'll kill your phones battery pretty quick.
After installing a new rom make sure you charge it to 100%, wipe battery stats and then let it die without charging to get the most out of your battery (and having an accurate battery indicator)

In my opinion the way you configure your phone has by far the biggest effect on battery life, followed closely by the signal strength of the area you are in, with maybe a very small effect caused by the rom/kernel combination. Watch what you have syncing. Facebook and Twitter syncs can kill your battery, as can any other app that's always using data. Also, wifi uses WAY less battery than 3G or 4G. Use it when you can.
I'm on stock EI22 with mkasick's kernel and I usually get a full 16 hours with power to spare.

Basically Poit. Since no 2 people use their phone the same way it is retarded to ask for a comparison of best battery life. People need to stop being lazy and just try the ROMs out and compare for themselves based on their own use.

I agree. I have seen 3 questions over the last 2 days with these dumb questions.
but if I was to give my advice, I would strongly advise trying MarcusantROM, Battery life is pretty amazing, just be sure to flash a different kernel, as 2.0.6 is not even offered for download anymore because of bugs n such.
I would strongly advise the Shadow Kernel, paired up with MarcusantRom. You should see some pretty amazing battery life with that combo.

Come on... "Dumb question"? "Lazy"? Get off your high horse. Certain ROMs give better battery performance than others because of certain tweaks and the OP asked for some general advice. Certain ROMs are certainly worse than others. OP wasn't asking for what would be best for him but what has worked good for others. Why is it so wrong for someone to ask for general advice about a ROM/Kernel combo. Not that hard of a question and not so ambiguous that it deserves a "dumb question" or "stop being lazy" response. If you don't want to help the OP, then simply DON'T RESPOND.
As for the question... I generally use the kernel that is included with the ROMs because normally that is what the developer has tested the most. I think Thunderhawk, Sleeper, and Legendary (in that order) are all good for battery but I haven't used all of the others.

In kind if you don't like the responses don't respond to them. I read for a month all the ROM threads before deciding on one to flash. Go to ANY ROM thread and someone there will claim they got the best battrery life there. It is different for every body and EVERY phone. ALL of the ROMs here have tweaks that work differently for everyone depending on use. Also people are sick of every other thread as "what's the best ROM". You HAVE to try them for yourself. If we are being to real for you then don't read what is written.

I was once where you are now. When I couldn't find a satisfactory answer, I made my own solution. I'll be uploading the latest version of it, version 3.3 today or tomorrow.
Battery Used: Extended Battery 2700 mah
Testing Performed: Idle Only
For those unsure, idle testing is simply when you treat your smartphone more like a phone. This included uses such as, checking the weather, responding to the occasional text, checking the time, etc. The primary goal of idle testing is to understand how long the phone can stay alive when used for texting and phone calls only. This is useful primarily for occasions such as, going on vacation, where you would like your phone to last a week or more in case of emergencies, but you'll be preoccupied and not killing your battery with Angry Birds. It's nice to know that our phone is capable older, simpler cellphones in standby time.
This indicates that my phone could stay on for as long as 10 to 14 days.
Direct arithmetic calculations indicate as much as 5.5 to 8 days on the stock 1500 mah battery.
Obviously, usage varies greatly between people and even between days, so anything other than idle testing is subjective. Testing was not performed on a stock installation, but rather, on my own daily personal fully-decked setup.
On the stock battery, I've played games for a total of more than 3 hours over a 48 hour time period before needing to recharge.
This has held true on my phone, my wife's, her mother's, and more than a thousand other user's phones. Yours may vary. Try them all. I do.
