[Q] Booting into Recovery - Epic 4G - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My physical camera button doesn't respond anymore, is there an alternate way to boot into recovery?
My Epic 4G fell into a hot tub, so I figure I can't get it fixed with any type of warranty...
Any assistance would be very helpful. Thanks!

If you have TEP they will give you a new one. Try this to get into recovery:
Plug phone into computer with ADB debugging enabled and run ADB.
Type this command
Code:
adb reboot recovery
This is assuming of course you have the drivers for the Epic installed and also the Android SDK with the platform-tools downloaded.
EDIT: or use ROM Manager to reboot into CWM.

Just use quickboot......

If u have TEP they will replace it or fix it no need to get into recovery just use ODIN to go back to stock and take it it

[Q] bootlopping & USB drivers not working to odin

My friend rooted his phone the other day and tried to use a battery mod app without clockwork recovery installed, and my computer is not recognizing his phone. I have tried reinstalling the Samsung drivers. I also have a vibrant and it connects fine to computer. Please any help appreciated.

If he rooted his phone then he has Clockwork installed, unless you mean with Clockwork Mod 3 and he booted into it and it converted to EXT4 without a compatible ROM. Power down the phone and power back on by holding camera, volume down and power buttons to get into clockwork. If he has CWM 2.x or 3.x you can pull the sd card and put it into a card reader and copy files from this thread on it depending which CWM he has and flash it:

Then he never successfully rooted. Try different USB ports for his phone. Make sure USB debugging is checked in settings>applications>development. Then you can Odin following this thread:

I think the Odin file link is dead so here it is:
the phone loops after the splash screen and won't let me adjust anything on it. I also have tried Odin and the phone isn't being recognized.

Are you in download mode? Power on while holding the 1 key. Try new drivers, new cable, different ports. Eventually Odin will see it.
Do you BONSAI?
I'm going to try swapping cables only thing I haven't tried. I've already downloaded the drivers and my vibrant connects fine the epic just wont. I have the eb13 md5, the pit. Its frustrating to have the usb not being recognized as the hardest part of unbricking this phone.
U don't need the pit file. Just the tar file.

I believe he got the EB13 prerooted with CWM3 that includes the EB13-EXT4.PIT
Isn't that required for the file structure?

Unroot Rogers S3 without volume button?

Hey guys,
volume down button doesn't work, wondering if I can unroot without using it or by booting into clockworkmod. Hopefully getting an exchange from Rogers but regardless I need to be able to do it. Thanks guys I appreciate your response
Custom ROM?

Open the terminal emulator of your choice.
Type
"Su" enter.
Allow the su prompt.
Type "reboot download" enter.
Connect to Odin and flash stone stock if you wish.
If you simply need to unroot and nothing else both super su and superuser have an unroot option.
Goodluck!
if i unroot from supersu will it go back to stock rom or will i have to do that myself? This is all assuming that i get an exchange from rogers
No, using super user or su to unroot will not automagically revert you to a stock ROM.
To prepare for warranty return,
Run Triangle Away
using adb on your pc, reboot into dl mode (adb reboot download)
Flash a stock ROM with Odin
Install twrp and it's basically like a touch version of cwm.

That has nothing to do with returning to stock and does not solve the issue of entering recovery without a volume button.
Correct answers above.
Hey guys thanks so much for your replies I really appreciate the help
to clear up any sort of confusion it's only the volume DOWN that doesn't work. I'm capable of going into clockworkmod. And i'm assuming those things you told me to download are google-able?
Thanks again

Rooting Verizon Gnex

I've got a Verizon Galaxy S3, rooted, CM10, and CWM 6.0.1.2. My friend wants to root his galaxy nexus after he saw my phone, and was wondering if I could use the same method of installing clockwork mod recovery as I did with mine. Can I use the same file, and flash it though Odin (v3.0.7)?
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
The GNex is extremely easy to root through adb. If you don't know how to set up adb and fastboot you should probably learn for your own sake as well as his.
Noooooooooooooooooo please don't use the same file.. Very very bad things will happen.. I mean like time paradoxes.. The doctor himself warned me.
You can grab a copy of CWR or TWRP for the Gnex (Toro) and go into fastboot (boot loader) make you sure you have fastboot.exe dropped into your windows folder on your computer.
Run these commands:
fastboot OEM unlock (everything on the device will be wiped incl SD space)
Accept the agreement and let it go back to the bootloader.
Fastboot flash recovery "your-recovery-name-.img"
Choose reboot recovery on the fastboot screen
From here you can go ahead and push over a ROM or su.zip file and flash it... All done.

What did I do wrong?

I know the phone is screwed. This is to get info so it doesn't happen on the next one I have coming. I haven't been able to find anything on what EXACTLY my issue is. I was flashing gf's S3 in ADB with CWM touch for her phone (same file I used). Terminal emulator kept crashing (which is what I used for mine) so that is why I chose ADB. Her phone is a stock S3 rooted.
Here is what I typed and what happened.
adb shell
su
dd if=/sdcard/recovery.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18 (looked as though everything went fine after)
exit
exit
exit
I then held the buttons for recovery until the phone restarted and viola, nothing. It is detected as DLOAD when I put on QPST and it comes up the same way any other bricked S3 is reported to work. I'm wondering what I did here so that I DON'T do it again. I want to flash this version of recovery and proceed to install all of what I use on my phone, but I need to flash the stupid recovery first! I did flash the odin file for CWM, but it seems to be too old or something because none of the roms I flash on my own S3 with the latest touch seem to work. Any help is greatly appreciated here and sorry for looking like an idiot. I do apologize if this already exists, but I searched for a while and couldn't come to a conclusion as to what I did wrong.
Wait. Please don't tell me I did this because instead of exiting I needed to reboot recovery as a command...
i dont think that shpuld matter you should still be able to access recovery via the key combo as long as it flashed correctly
That's what I thought. I even found a video of the EXACT same procedure done except they rebooted recovery instead of exiting ADB with a command. The only logical explanation for this as far as I can tell is that the file I had was corrupt in one way or another.

very well could be...
thats why checking the md5 sum is a good idea
Use mobileODIN by chainfire.

Alright thanks I really appreciate the info. I usually do mobileODIN, but it doesn't detect this .img so I didn't. I'll try ROM Manager next time. MD5 sum would be a good idea as well. Just sucks cause I have to wait til Tuesday for a replacement. Thanks again though!
I use Rom manager it's really easy

Got the replacement and flashed with ROM Manager. Buying premium soon to do touch version. I flashed my own S3 using the same steps in ADB and it worked. I'm just glad we got a new one cause this is my girlfriends, not mine. Thanks for all the tips everyone!
You don't need to buy premium ROM manager to get the touch. Download ROM tool box then open ROM management >tools >flash recovery it's right there free

USCC GS3 Recovery Restart

I've found similar topics but nothing tells where to go if reflashing from Odin doesn't work.
Galaxy s 3, rooted. Wanted to do a factory reset but recovery starts then resets at the blue lettering. When I am able to get into recovery it also shuts down before I can select any options. Also, download mode resets. The only way to get download from shutting down is to repeatedly press the power button.
Mind you, I can start the phone and use it but at this point not having a recovery is really troubling.
Any ideas? I'm not a noob but obviously not advanced.
Reflash your recovery through ODIN
Sadly I've been trying that. It never stays on long enough before rebooting.
Sent from my SCH-R530U using xda app-developers app
If you use cwm download Rom Manager and install recovery that way. If you use TWRP download Goo Manager and reflash TWRP that way.

Cwm will flash. Can still get root. When trying to install another recovery it fails to load.
Even though I know cmw has flashed when I actually go to recovery that won't load. Something is causing the phone to shut down prematurely.

Connect your phone to a computer,.grab the adb binaries (I have them on my dev-host) and type the.following in command prompt window.opened in the directory.where.adb.exe is located
Code:
adb reboot recovery
Or open a shell on the phone and type (press enter between lines):
Code:
su
reboot recovery
For download mode
Code:
su
reboot download
Well. No luck. Was able to flash a recovery by pressing the power button repeatedly. But I still can't get into recovery to use it. Just shuts down.
