Hey guys,
volume down button doesn't work, wondering if I can unroot without using it or by booting into clockworkmod. Hopefully getting an exchange from Rogers but regardless I need to be able to do it. Thanks guys I appreciate your response
Custom ROM?

Open the terminal emulator of your choice.
Type
"Su" enter.
Allow the su prompt.
Type "reboot download" enter.
Connect to Odin and flash stone stock if you wish.
If you simply need to unroot and nothing else both super su and superuser have an unroot option.
Goodluck!
if i unroot from supersu will it go back to stock rom or will i have to do that myself? This is all assuming that i get an exchange from rogers
No, using super user or su to unroot will not automagically revert you to a stock ROM.
To prepare for warranty return,
Run Triangle Away
using adb on your pc, reboot into dl mode (adb reboot download)
Flash a stock ROM with Odin
Install twrp and it's basically like a touch version of cwm.

That has nothing to do with returning to stock and does not solve the issue of entering recovery without a volume button.
Correct answers above.
Hey guys thanks so much for your replies I really appreciate the help
to clear up any sort of confusion it's only the volume DOWN that doesn't work. I'm capable of going into clockworkmod. And i'm assuming those things you told me to download are google-able?
Thanks again

The video Uber pointed to has all the links to the files you need. To summarize you will have Odin on your computer with Samsung drivers installed. You will also have the clockworkmod tar on the computer and download the ROM to your phone's sd card.
1. You will turn off your phone, hold the 1 key on the keyboard then add pressing and holding the power button until the yellow triangle saying download mode pops up.
2. With Odin up on your computer and auto reboot box unchecked, connect the usb cable (recommend a Blackberry cable). It should show a comxx in the box. Put the clockworkmod tar in the PDA box of odin by browsing to the file on your computer from odin.
3. Hit start. It go pretty fast and tell you when it is complete and passed.
4.Now with the yellow triangle still on your phone, disconnect the cable. Pop the battery out and in. Press and hold in this order, volume down, camera and power buttons making sure the power is the last you add. Hold those for about 5 full seconds. Clockworkmod 5 should come up.
5. Choose install file from sd card by scrolling with the volume down button and selecting with the camera button. Go to the place on your sd card that the FC09 ROM downloaded to, perhaps a directory called download. Choose the file and flash it.
6. Hit reboot system and you should have a rooted deodexed stock ROM on your phone. You are ready to do any rooted stuff and even flash themes on this ROM.

If superuser is working then you should be rooted. As for flashing.... read read read before you flash anything and make sure it won't effe up your phone.

Why don't you keep using qbking77's videos? He has how to videos for a bunch of rom's, plus he reviews rom's too.
Give some of the reviews a viewing, see if you like what is in the rom, and then follow his directions.
What others have said is correct, you can screw up your phone if you're not careful, but his directions are very good and very complete. If you do exactly as he says, you should not have issues.
If you do have issues, others have written instructions on what to do to recover from that too.
Have fun. Take your time. You'll learn as you experiment.
Since you already got the hang of odin it is almost impossible to brick this phone...sponge it yeah but tough to brick. Have fun.

Either pay for the tethering plan.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
Or follow the rooting instructions found within these forums or youtube qbking77 epic videos. And download a 3rd party tethering app or flash a custom rom that has tethering baked in.
.
.
.
But be advised the root method violates TOS agreement and if sprint finds out and decides to they can terminate your service no questions asked. I've only heard of it happening if someone uses a extremely large amount of data while tethering. But there is a first for everything.

Hey Guys,
Here's my situation. my power button doesn't work and to my understanding, that's part of the motherboard so I'm kind of fked on that end (water damage so sprint won't replace it).
My phone's stock right now, but I have rooted in the past with QBKING77's method (mentioned above by kennyglass and QBKING77's youtube how-to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9eaCtiS0Bo&feature=youtube_gdata_player).
I'm trying to root the phone so that I can install CM9 on it (used beta 2 in the past). I'm able to adb into the phone and get it into download mode. I'm scared that if I flashed the CWM Tar file, there won't be anything to get into CWM with since I can't do the button combination anymore.
Any suggestions? Also any recommendations on the power button problem would be much appreciated as well (I currently slide to open it and bought a cheapo non-data charger and it boots it up).
Thanks guys for all your help

Get another Epic off of Ebay.
It works fine now. I just slide to get it on and installed a power off app so that's a workaround for now. Upgrade's coming up soon so just going to stick this out for now.
I'm not familiar with ODIN enough but I would assume there's a way to just flash the ROM and CWM at once to obtain root and CWM together....

Sorry, forgot to mention that it doesn't work
The cable just powers the device on without performing the actions of the power button so button combinations don't work
I know I can boot to recovery with a rooted rom, but I need to be able to install that first. And I need my phone to be on with a working ROM in order to ADB into it for any ADB commands.
Can you get into download mode with the cable and holding the "1" key? If so there are odinable prerooted ROMs.

@kennyglass123
I can't get into download mode with the cable and holding the "1" key, BUT
I can get into download mode by turning on debugging and adb into it with "adb reboot download"
What would the steps be then? Would I obtain a odinable pre-rooted rom (any suggestions?), Odin, re-boot, installed cwm recovery through the app, reboot, boot into cwm, and then wipe + flash cm9?

When you say app, do you mean ROM Manager? You will have to see if that EC05 prerooted will accept ROM Manager. If that is what you meant, then yes. Just like that.

Ok a few things just to make sure:
I'm on FC09 Stock right now, so by flashing this ROM, I would then be able to install clockworkmod recovery through ROM Manager (giving me the latest clockwork mod recovery I believe) and then get to clockworkmod recovery through ROM Manager.
Eventually I would like to end up on CM9 which is MTD. Could I just flash a CM9 ROM over the EC05 Rooted ROM?
Would I still be on FC09 and/or would it be better to flash another FC09 Rooted ROM (i'm referring to the one in QBKING77's youtube link) to upgrade to FC09 and then flash the CM9 ROM.
In ODIN, I would place the EC05 file in the "PDA" location in Odin?
Would I check re-partition and autoboot? I'm assuming I don't check f. reset time.
Thanks for all your help
If you Odin the tar I posted you will be back on EC05 modem. You can always flash a newer modem with Odin. If ROM manager does work on that odined ROM then you can go right to cm9 after clockworkmod 5.

evening fellow rooters and droid users
i never ran into root problem before with any of my past previous phones but there is first for anything these days. so it be greatly appreciated if i can get any input from anyone about my problem.
i have tmobile galaxy s3
droid version 4.0.4
i followed the step of downloading odin3, cwm superuser and clockworkmod.tar.
copy cwm superuser zip file to my sd card
boot into download mode. ran odin3, click on PDA and locating the clockworkmod.tar
i've been reading mix instructions of UNCHECK and/or UNCHECK F Reset Timer. which one is correct?
press start everything passed and the phone automatically reboot.
powered off the phone and hold VOLUME UP and HOME and POWER button to try to get into CWM recovery tool. but i end up getting into android's recovery system NOT CWM.
where do I go from there? i re-install and used odin over 5 times already and no changes.
what should i do?
Read this it should take care of it. let me know how it goes.
i appreciate your reply however it didn't resolve anything.
the installation of the cwm.tar file supposedly say success and not failed.
i just can't seem to get into CWM recovery.
i am assume the installation of that cwm recovery.tar file didn't go thru?
Ok the other thing you can try is after you flash via odin remove the battery before it reboots when done flashing thru odin. Wait about 5 to 10 seconds put battery back in and hold volume up + home button + power button and when you see the little blue letters on the top left of the screen let go of all the buttons and it should take you into CWM. Then install superuser.zip. reboot and then you can flash recovery from either rom manager(cwm) or goomanager (twrp) and it will stick. Let me know what happens. I'll be checking the thread for your results. We will get you rooted!!!!

thank you sir

Its probably because after any ota update stock recovery will rewrite at boot.
Delete these
/system/recovery-from-boot.p
/system/etc/install-recovery.sh
Reinstall cwm and youre good to go.
Ive got a fw thread stickied in development and will be adding this and more soon. Will try to start on it tonight.
Theres another way without battery pull btw. Check there later and ill explain it.

I didnt see that, but its the only reason Ive seen that recovery wont stick after a reboot. They only put those files in with otas as its how they patch/update the recovery. You shouldnt see them any any of the odin flashable firmware.

I know the phone is screwed. This is to get info so it doesn't happen on the next one I have coming. I haven't been able to find anything on what EXACTLY my issue is. I was flashing gf's S3 in ADB with CWM touch for her phone (same file I used). Terminal emulator kept crashing (which is what I used for mine) so that is why I chose ADB. Her phone is a stock S3 rooted.
Here is what I typed and what happened.
adb shell
su
dd if=/sdcard/recovery.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18 (looked as though everything went fine after)
exit
exit
exit
I then held the buttons for recovery until the phone restarted and viola, nothing. It is detected as DLOAD when I put on QPST and it comes up the same way any other bricked S3 is reported to work. I'm wondering what I did here so that I DON'T do it again. I want to flash this version of recovery and proceed to install all of what I use on my phone, but I need to flash the stupid recovery first! I did flash the odin file for CWM, but it seems to be too old or something because none of the roms I flash on my own S3 with the latest touch seem to work. Any help is greatly appreciated here and sorry for looking like an idiot. I do apologize if this already exists, but I searched for a while and couldn't come to a conclusion as to what I did wrong.
Wait. Please don't tell me I did this because instead of exiting I needed to reboot recovery as a command...
i dont think that shpuld matter you should still be able to access recovery via the key combo as long as it flashed correctly
That's what I thought. I even found a video of the EXACT same procedure done except they rebooted recovery instead of exiting ADB with a command. The only logical explanation for this as far as I can tell is that the file I had was corrupt in one way or another.

Installing Custom Recovery
Make sure you read all instructions before trying, as I am NOT responsible for any bricked devices, dead SD cards. As this is only a step by step instructions on how to do it.
Step 1 Download Knox remover and SuperSU and put it on your phone(some where you will remember)
Step 2 Go to developers options and check(toggle) USB debugging, after that you can put your phone into download mode.(Phone off > Hold volume down, power and home button all at once, let go when you see the next menu) A warning will be prompted, volume up to continue.
Step 3 Open Odin and click on PDA and select CWM Recovery 6, make sure you UNCHECKED AUTO REBOOT.
Step 4 Plug your device in, and you should see that it is connected (if not, install Kies) as soon as its plugged in hit start.
Step 5 When the process has finished. Take out battery and leave it out, unplug your phone from computer. Wait a few seconds. Put battery back in and boot straight into recovery(If not Knox will reinstall stock recovery, thus making your restart all over again) (Press and hold Volume up, power and home button as SOON AS YOU SEE BLUE WORDS IN THE TOP LEFT CORNER LET GO).
Step 6 You should be in the custom recovery. Go to install zip and find where you put Knox remover. After you finished wipe cache/delvik.
Substep(Optional) - It is recommended that you make a nandroid backup as soon as possible because with the latest 4.3 update, there is no way to reflash back to stock if something goes wrong later with the phone, and the nandroid will be the only way to fix the phone without flashing another ROM. (Thanks to shortydoggg)
Step 7 If you wish to immediately flash SuperSU go to install zip, after flashing wipe cache/delvik.
Odin
Knox Remover
SuperSU
CWM Recovery 6
You could have also added either in step 6 or step 7 to make a nandroid backup as soon as possible because with the latest 4.3 update, there is no way to reflash back to stock if something goes wrong later with the phone, and the nandroid will be the only way to fix the phone without flashing another ROM.

Rooting requires a usb connection to a pc because you don't have access to the filesystem unless in download mode or unless you are already rooted.

cf auto root should work for root. what did you use to root? if you are rooted install a custom recovery and flash a knoxfree rom from the dev section
Flash CF auto root via Odin then download latest superuser from play store and you are ready to go.

Just as a suggestion, something that happened to me while playing around with the phone: if you're running Stock rom and then flash a custom recovery via Odin (I used Philz Touch) upon booting on recovery just to wipe cache/dalvik I found something interesting: my phone wasn't rooted, so when chosing the option "reboot system now" a message that said something like "root is broken, would you like to root your phone before rebooting" appeared. I was curious, as I normally use a website called Kingo root that does it in a one-click kinda way. When I chose Yes in the recovery, upon booting my phone it was rooted. After, I just intalled Chainfire's SuperSU from the play store and it was all good.
It's worth trying I believe.

You may not have the appropriate permissions to access. The last time I tried to root my phone i didn't run odin in administrator mode. I'm just finding out about this recently. The only answer that pops up in my mind would be that you weren't running Odin as an administrator, like you mentioned. Maybe try running Odin as an admin, or alternatively (and I haven't tried this myself but Chainfire's thread gives a good step-by-step and people in the forum do help) use mobile Odin ------> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1347899. The first time I wanted to root my phone I was having issues too, not being able to do it because of lack of experience. I stumbled upon this website: http://www.kingoapp.com/. Check it out, if you would like. This kingo app is a downloadle app (kind of like Odin) that Roots yourm phone alone, without needing to flash anything. The step-by-step's are there, just turn on your developer options and then turn on USB debugging. I personally rooted A Galaxy Tab, SIII, a Note I i717 and an Asus MemoPad with that website and it worked perfectly for me. Rooting via custom recovery is something that I learned recently, and by chance. I do not know whether it trips the Knox counter or not to be honest with you, to me it doesn't make a difference since I will not be returning any of the devices I rooted, After rooting the phone like so you could potentially download mobile Odin from Chainfire's thread and then use Odin without needing to use your computer.
Hope this helps

Yeah that was it, i rooted it earlier today. I do have another question for you. I ran root checker pro and it says I'm rooted. I tried to install busybox but it said remove supersu permissions reinstall supersu and to delete and reinstall busybox. Also the adb shell doesn't have root access either. So is that a common occurrence, or is it the norm after rooting and installing custom recovery? Awaiting your reply. Thanks in advance...

Sorry for the late reply, hadn't been to the forum in a minute. To be honest with u, I don't know for sure. I haven't personally yet served myself from adb so I can't tell u. However, the reason why you received that response from busybox may be because when u were partially rooted it gained root access (if it ever did, I only assume).
Try what was asked of u and I'm sure busybox will work no problems. Also, if u have the terminal emulator apk try entering the command "root" (without the ") and if u gain roots access it will definitely mean you are rooted for sure.
What do you want to use adb for, if I may ask?
