I've been looking for the past few hours and now I'm starting to get nervous --- i've read tons of threads with people having something like my problem and I've done everything suggested and still no luck, starting to freak out a bit haha. Hooked my phone up this morning, everything was as normal. Plug it in, USB option comes up, worked perfectly. The only thing I did with my phone was go on a long car ride and charged it using an adapter to a house charger. Im assuming that somehow that screwed it up since it was being converted. This sounds strange to me but its my only idea. I can't connect, the second I plug in my phone it starts to charge (and for some reason the light doesn't come on when it usually does).
Things I've tried =
-Reset phone/computer
-Reflashed latest Calks
-Tried 4 different cables (along with all computers USB ports)
-Reinstalled Samsung drivers
-Reflashed stock
-System restore of computer
--------
Other than completely wiping my phone of everything I don't know what else to try. Any suggestions/help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for your time.
Try booting on recovery and enable USB mount, if you still don't have access to the phone then very likely your USB port is damaged. This will discard any issues with the ROM
Another thing you could try is to get the phone to another computer, the computer should recognize it even without drivers if you enable USB storage mode or at the very least make the unknown device show up on the device manager. If it shows up then you know for sure your computer is the problem, if not, well then it is your phone.

I even went so far as to format my netbook and start fresh, still didn't work --- just got it set back up...
My girlfriend just got home with her computer and it's not recognizing it at all. When I go into settings>Wireless> USB Utilities, it doesn't even recognize that my cable is connected (even though its charging)
I didn't know there was anything like Force USB Mount in recovery so I'm going to do that right after I type this post
This is really frustrating :O haha so I guess if your suggestion doesn't work, whats the easiest way to un-root return to stock so I can stop by the Sprint store tomorrow? I talked to a rep that roots his phones and he said as long as it says Gingerbread 2.3.6 they'll take it back (I guess they don't look at the custom counter)
Any other suggestions? (Thanks fen)
Thanks for the idea but the force mount through CWM didn't work ... Gave me a little hope by popping up on my pc for two seconds but then disappeared. Yeah so looks like my next option is to return to stock and get me a new one?

Odd... so the phone popped on windows and then disconnected immediately? That would indicate that physically the port is fine but logically something is going on... (unless you moved the cable).
Well if that is the case then you could either try to diagnose the issue yourself OR try to get the phone replaced somehow.
Another idea... have your tried download mode?
Im on the same boat delete the drivers from your computer the actual usb drivers not the samsung ones that worked for me the update them again. I have a dv7 hp. It works at times but somethimes it says error connect to a high speed usb

I had this same issue (if I'm reading and understanding you correctly) for the last week and was at my wits end. No matter what I did or changed, I could not get my PC to recognize my phone all of a sudden. The USB connected notification just quit appearing. I installed and uninstalled drivers, installed and uninstalled different Keis versions, tried different cables, different computers..... Finally just as I was about to wipe and Odin the phone, I remembered I had changed the AP/CP setting in ##8878# when I did the PRL change and just maybe I forgot to change it back.......sure enough, that was it. I switched it back, connected phone to PC and bam!...all fixed.

Sorry I was in a hurry when I typed that --- let me clarify.
Honestly I did so much tinkering last night that I don't remember exactly how i got it to do it. But after playing with the mounts in CWM, I eventually started up my phone and the USB logo came up in the Notif bar --- (MTP Inititaed - or whatever that is) but after clicking the icon nothing happened and eventually just went away

Just by playing around with those numbers you gave me I found it to be ##8778# bringing up the USB -AP/CP/ALL menu --- which one is it supposed to be set as?
EDIT*** It was on AP... tried the other two options, resetting phone in between both of them and still no luck --- have an appt to go to the sprint store tomorrow ---
Because I can't get the phone to connect... I don't suppose there is a way to flash unroot is there --- I've already flashed modem kernal and stock rom --- went into ES and deleted Superuser... the only way you can tell that my phone has been messed with is that CWM still pops up when you do the Volume+poweron... any suggestions?
Thanks again for the suggestions everyone I really appreciate them

I am having the same issue. However, my phone is stock. Do you know what was the culprit?
Get insurance on it wait a few weeks, say you lost it and pay the $100 for the replacement. Keep the lost one for parts. Or sell it on ebay for parts. This is if you can't fully get back to stock.

I never did get a confirmation kn exactly what the problem was. As stated above i just deleted super user and flashed a stock everything and just prayed they wouldn't check for cwm which they didn't.
Im assuming my charging port burnt out. I used multiple different cables, including LG HTC stock Samsung and some Verizon one. But i think what finally did it was using the Verizon one in the car with a really old adapter. I don't understand why this would cause a problem but i really believe it did. That Verizon cable even acts weird with this new phone like it says charging but led light randomly turns on and off.
Im confused as to what happens to that old phone if you ever lose it. I lost a phone along time ago when I was drunk, but instead of claiming insurance i was eligible for upgrade. What possibly could have ended up happening with that old phone? Somebody found a paper weight? Or was somebody able to flash it and use it?
I guess the condensed version of my question is what happens to a found phone after device has been reported lost?

Does mobile odin work well?
Sent from my oh-so-sexy Samsung!
I really don't understand Odin sometimes, it doesn't make any sense at all. At first my stock cable didn't work very well, and everyone said to go get a Blackberry one from Verizon because theirs is a top quality cable (I guess Blackberry did SOMETHING right after all) and that worked for a while.... Every time I get it to work I simply leave the cable on the port it was on so I can go back to it later, thinking that if it worked once, it should work again, right? Nope... Every single time it's a huge hassle and this particular time I have tried every single port on my computer w 2 different USB cables and I still don't get a COM link....
Help please!
Try a different computer or try to reinstall Odin/drivers
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA
Exactly. Uninstall drivers and let Windows find and reinstall them.
Sent from my PantechP4100 using xda premium
I have already done that. When first double-clicking "Samsung_Mobile_USB_Driver_V1.3.800.0.msi" it asks if you would like to uninstall or repair the current drivers. I clicked uninstall, waited for it to finish, then re-installed again and it still didn't work.
You needed to use a file to force driver installation? Do they not install on their own? -- shot in the dark, but try diff. drivers (or the ones that should be installing on their own, specifically)?
Start up Odin, Take out your battery, plug in your phone to your computer without battery in there, put phone in download mode, then put back your battery.

Ok.... So now I'm really frustrated... Odin has always worked no problem for me. I've had a little trouble sometimes, sure, but now it is just outright refusing to work. I've tried 2 different cables: my stock cable and a blackberry usb cable that fits really tight in the port that seems to work much better, normally.
I can't get a COM connection for the life of me. I tried what omair2005 suggested about taking the battery out, etc and that didn't work. Windows keeps telling me that the "device has malfunctioned" but it has always said that so I really don't think anything of that considering it's worked before.
Anyone have any out of the box thinking on this one? I'm definitely not a noob to flashing nor Odin, this must be some sort of weird glitch, or perhaps something simple that I'm overlooking....

Did you reboot after the uninstall and reboot the phone? Then with both freshly booted let Windows find the drivers. It makes a difference.

ive installed odin from the xda thread, and ive extracted it,but when click open a message comes up odin3.ini with some boxes and it does not open..
If you're having trouble with drivers in windows try ubuntu and heimdall its the only thing that worked for me to get cwm installed after Odin bricked my phone. Command line interface seems into intimidating but it's way easier than Odin.

I took my phone into the sprint store this evening because the usb port was starting to act up. The tech resoldered the connections and the phone started charging the way it was supposed to again. I had flashed FC09 modem, MTD stock deodexed and Marcusants nyan kernel that shows FC09 as the baseband. I did this of course so the tech could run his diagnostics and it wouldn't look out of the ordinary. The tech I worked with already knows I root and even remembered me from my last USB port replacement but that's another interesting story in of itself.
Anyway, when I got home I set about setting it back to my previous set-up. At this point my battery meter showed 70% before I restated into CWM. I started the restore proccess from CWM and put the phone in my pocket without even thinking since I had some work to do. I pulled the phone out about an hour later when I remembered it only to find a black screen. The phone had died somewhere in that hour or so. I thought it was no big deal and I would just charge it and all would be good. I connected it to the charger and got no lights of any sort and no reaction. I tried 4 different chargers all of which work perfectly with other phones in the house to no avail.
I then tried to hook it up to my computer and got no response when attempting to reach download mode with the only 2 data cables I have; one is a radioshak and the other is the stock sammy cable. I took the battery and SD out and let it sit for about an hour. I hooked the phone back up to the cable with no battery and attempted download mode with no response. I'm at a loss as for what to do now.
I can't get to download mode and I can't take it back to the sprint store because the guy I'm sure will just blame me for rooting my phone and messing with it.
Now what??????? Could I have actually bicked it with a CWM restore that maybe died in the middle? Or could he have ****ed up my USB port for data and now im screwed on Odin.
Edit: I forgot to add the tech did what he said was a full diagnostic on it before I left and he said it passed with flying colors.
There are a large amount of threads on restore a brick in the QA forum. Try using search terms like: "hard brick" to locate them. There are good posts in them that may be of assistance. I can't recall much of the info from memory, hence my search suggestion.
Next time you go to do anything in recovery, don't have anything planned for that 3-15mins. That phone should have been burning up your pocket with the restore and screen on the entire time. I'm not sure how you didn't notice it, lol.
Maybe the battery is dead and the port stopped working again, try a charged battery

As far as I'm concerned this HAD to have been the problem. As you can see in OP I did most of the things listed in the brick threads along with the stickies.
I talked to someone on IRC about the possibility of making a download jig but my soldering person (my old man) wasn't available in time.
Sooooo. I took it back to the sprint store and simply did another TEP claim and had absolutely no troubles. In fact the guy apologized to me and said he's still getting better at his soldering skills. Not the first time I have had a USB port charge but give no data access after being soldered by them.
The batterry is fine and is sitting in the refurb epic I just got back today.
Now I have a new problem. I'm trying to root the new epic and am having trouble getting it recognized in Win 7 Pro X64. I d/l the latest drivers from thier website and have tried multiple different ways of install/uninstall including specifically giving it Admin priveleges. I have also tried unistalling drivers and installing keis using same method with same nogo.
After fiddling with SamSucks software I uninstalled all of it and d/l Heimdall.
I followed the directions in the readme.txt to install drivers and all it could find was unknown USB device which it couldn't install drivers for.
All install and uninstalls were done with restarts and ccleaner in between to make sure of complete deletion.
Could I have gotten another bad data port phone that only charges?
The only way that works every time for me is to turn on USB debugging, uminstall all drivers from the computer and then allow Windows update to search for drivers....can take like 30 minutes sometimes to get all that are needed but it always works for me.

Now It seems like I'm not getting any data connection at all between the phone and computer. I'm on my third USB cord and I can't even get the phone to ask about mounting the SD card to transfer data to the computer. This just seems odd from a straight from Sprint refurb.
Edit: To make things even weirder I just hooked up my wife's Samsung feature phone and it gets recognized almost instantly.

By doing this I'm assuming you mean go into the device manager, selecting update driver, then Search automatically for updated driver software. Is this what you mean? I had tried this without USB debugging before your suggestion and got no dice. I just tried it with USB debugging and still no dice. Though it didn't take very long to fail so I could be doing something wrong.

No. Choose uninstall driver. Then if it fails try a different port. If it is a desktop computer then only use the ports in the rear.

This is exactly what I have been doing. I have tried all 6 ports on the back with nothing plugged in and all 3 ports on my netbook. The odd part to me is no matter what port on what computer I plug into, the phone does not seem to recognize it is plugged into a usb port.

If you tried a total of 9 different ports then it sounds like a hardware issue on the Epic again.
I took the phone back to the sprint store thus evening and the tech had all the same problems I did. He tried several cords and ports to no avail. He ordered me another epic.
Its hard to believe they let these things out of the factory in such poor shape.
Here's to hoping I get a good one this time. *fingers crossed. I'm already so tired of stock rom, I miss my CM7.

OMG I think I'm going to go nuts. I brought my fourth epic home last night and proceeded to odin CWM. Everything went perfect, or so I thought, as it said it passed. Now the damn thing is completely unresponsive and none of the tricks to get it into d/l mode work. How is this even possible. They did a battery of tests on it before I left the store and it passed. I didn't think Odin had the capability to mess up the phone this much. Any ideas on wth is going on are welcome at this point.

I'd have to agree with phonehunter59 on this one. It sounds like something is going wrong on the computer's end of things or maybe Odin.

Will I'm not sure what exactly went wrong but I did get into download mode finally. I used the old voodoo "magic button" coupled with pressing the power button. I was then able to enter download mode and flash. I think the problem this time was bad settings in Odin. I only unchecked restart and not everything else. As soon as I unchecked everything I was able to successfully flash CWM.
As for my computer, it's a QX6850 sitting on a 680i. About 6 or 7 years old or so, but it still gets the job done pretty good. OS is 64 bit windows 7. I used the version of Odin found in Kenny's rooting sticky in general.

Thanks for the response but that didnt seem to help.
I'm curious if its a hardware issue or something else. I've restored a backup i had to see if that helped but nothing. If i return to stock unrooted will that help? Or does someone have an idea as to why and how to fix this? Thanks for any help.
No idea. I did some searches for something like "android stuck usb charge only" and came up with the below. Some folks said that they were able to fix it, though not permanently, by wiping. The above seemed to work for some, though again, not permanently. I wasn't able to find anything else.
Did you try connecting to other PC's?
Did you try removing the device from your PC's device manager, uninstall the driver, then reinstall the driver and reconnect?
I agree it seems hardware'ish because it's also a problem with the MHL cord, too. I wish I could help more, but there's not much out there about being stuck in charge only mode.
Are you still under Manufacterer's warranty? Maybe that can be returned because it won't mount.?

Dont have another PC so that option cant be tested now. I removed the device and unistalled/reinstalled drivers and nothing.
Warranty is not an option because its past due. I do have insurance but am afraid of not getting an OG in return and i dont know how all that works to be honest.
I am willing to return to stock but only one concern i have is losing all my data. How do i backup pics and documents without being able to connect to pc? PLEASE can someone show me the way. Thanks again for all responses.

Have you tried different drivers yet? There's 3 of them here.

I started having this problem after installing the latest LG drivers. Replicated the issue on 3 different Windows 7 PCs. 1 32-bit home-built, 1 64-bit Gateway laptop with OEM image, 1 64-bit HP Laptop with work image.
Before upgrading, phone connects fine with in both MTP & PTP modes just using built-in (or pulled from WU) drivers. After upgrading to LG drivers, PC no longer detects the phone. Uninstalling the drivers or going backwards to earlier versions does not fix the problem.
Again, thanks to everyone for their responses, I really appreciate it. But unfortunately nothing seems to be helping my issue. I'm going by my wife's job to hook up to her computer to see if hers can recognize my phone, well at least I hope.
One thing I ask of someone, I've been using Arliberator to connect to my radio. Maybe someone has more knowledge than me to help.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...51bGwsMSwyLDEsImNvbS5reWxlLmFybGliZXJhdG9yIl0.
Anyways, it has an option under settings to "fix drivers" which I have no idea what it does so i never messed with it. Except for when it wouldnt connect to the radio, I pressed it. Could that have anything to do with it not connecting to pc? I've emailed the dev of this app but have gotten no response as to what it does.
I'm really at a loss here as I can still use my phone but not to its full potential. Its frustrating because I cant even return to stock to see if it will fix my issue. Is there any other way to return to stock without a pc? Like can i flash a stock RUU? I ask because I once had an Evo 4g and was able to do it that way.
Again, thanks to everyone's responses.
I finally heard from the dev of ARLiberator and he guarantees me his app has nothing to do with my phone and that the "fix drivers" is for the app only. He says to try and reset my phone to try and solve my issue. But wouldn't that completely erase my phone?

Thanks but that didnt help either. Idk what else to do. I dont understand how it can still charge but not be recognized by my pc or mhl cord doesnt show up. Weird thing is when I do plug up the MHL phone recognizes it and the mirroring, idk what its called exactly pops up but doesnt show up on TV.
What to do...what to do...
Your charging port may have broken a connector. Happened to my last phone. Charges fine but the computer connector won't work. Replacement needed bud.

If this is the case will sprint replace it even if I am rooted? I have the insurance but have been hesitant to take it for that reason.

My Phone
Hi, Uber-noob here. I have the sprint samsung gs3, Model number sph-l710, android version 4.1.2. I had stock rooted my phone via QBKing77's video (thanks man!) and had had no problems, including connecting my phone by USB (PDA net, Odin, etc.) to my PCs.
My Problem
For no reason I can see, my laptop(s) stopped recognizing my phone. There is no message, the pc acts as though nothing was plugged in, no message. Device manager shows nothing either. The ONLY sign that my phone was plugged in at all is the "battery charging" icon on my phone.
What I've Done
I use a good data cable that used to work, and have bought and tried a new one. I have tried 2 other computers. I have reinstalled the USB drivers. I have pulled the battery from my phone, waited, and put it back in. I just did a factory reset. Nothing has changed.
I hope someone here can help me figure this out, cause I'm stumped. Please let me know if I can provide any more info. Thanks!
Go into developers options in settings. Make sure usb debugging is turned off. Try that.

Hey, thanks for the response! I tried it, no effect. Any other ideas?
Did you try to remove S3 in device manager in your PC and plug S3 in ?

There is no s3 in my device manager. Device manager doesn't show, in any way that I have my phone attached. No message, no change, even after repeatedly scanning for hardware changes. I've plugged this phone into 3 different computers and its the same on each. Thanks for the advice though! Any other ideas out there?
Install the latest drivers from the Samsung website. This should solve the issue.

You said you tried a good cable, but is it the original cable? My phone is kinda wonky some times when I don't use the original usb cable.

Hi, it was actually the original cable that started messing up. The cable I have now was a replacement and I've had no problems with it whatsoever till recently. Thanks for the feedback though!

I would still try another cable because I've cables quit working out of the blue before. Also, it may help if you go to device manager and uninstall/remove your USB hub and then restart your computer...it will automatically detect and reinstall it.
I would try with a linux livecd/liveusb to rule out a driver issue. Also try a different cable. Or make sure your cable works - try with another device or computer.
And there really should be no need for extradrivers if you plug it in a mass storage mode. At least my two phones work with Win7, Ubuntu and Crunchbang otb.

Open Dialer enter ##3424#
When PhoneUtil Opens Select PDA
Tap Qualacomm USB Setting
Select MTP+ADB
Tap OK
Let me know if that does the trick

Hello, I'm not familiar with linux at all so that would be more of a last resort. However, I have tried multiple computers and a brand new data cable so that is not the answer probably. I appreciate the suggestion though!

That was a good idea! But it didn't work unfortunately. I'm starting to think that I may have a bad micro USB port in my phone. But the phone charges just fine, so I dunno. I hope you have more ideas? Thanks a lot dor the advice!
Yeah could be one of the pins in the port is messed up. Would explain why it charges, but no data connection.
I swear I tried every suggested solution out there – uninstalling and reinstalling drivers. Rebooting in download mode and trying to get phone and PC top lay nice. I accessed all those hidden settings and poked around with the settings. Three hours of tooling around the web looking for solutions and I got nowhere. Then I came across some obscure site where somebody suggested the pins might be off. With the care of a surgeon, I slipped the tip of a knife into my phone's USB port and nudged it every so slightly. Plugged and in and there was that elusive USB symbol, offering up all those grand options. I would've bet anything that this was some complex driver issue, but no. It was a slightly bent pin in that tiny opening at the bottom of my SIII. I'm not sure if I should be elated or annoyed at all the time wasted. I hope you guys find your own solutions, whatever they prove to be. Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeesh.
