htc evo sprint cdma 2.1 tried rooting it, i did but
1 i guess some thing is wrong with the recovery image (recovery mode gets me to the red triand exclamation point)
2 cant install nandroid on my hero it was easy.. wtf
This is for EVO. You should go to the Hero section.
sorry i meant the evo told i'm fried
ok this should probably be posted in the Q&A section.
It sounds like you dont have one of the new recoveries yet. if you are rooted and havent already try downloading rom manager and having it flash clockwork and then boot back into recovery and see if it goes that way.
If you used the simple root program i believe it has an option to install the recovery you can try using that if you cant get rom manager to take as i have heard sometimes when using that method getting the new recovery on the first time can be tricky.
Let us know if you still have problems after.
toast part 2. you are not nand unlocked.
hardly fried
okay i think i got it forgot to run the evo-recovery windows, duh! trying to install virus rom carbon, thnx guys for not blasting this noobie .. i'm just 2wks and tring to do to phones u all have been verrry patient to say tha least
well a no go for me phone is caught in a boot loop
what hboot version do you have?
.79 ussually means you do not have nand unlocked which may be the case as stated above. If it isnt as stated try toast part 2/2 an it shoudl get you set up.

Depends if you used Toast's method or Unrevoked Forever... best way to tell is to boot to bootloader and look at the top line. S-OFF means you have NAND unlocked. AFAIK, S-ON always means you don't.

I never thought to check before I flashed UF, doesn't the ENG bootloader still have S-ON? Or was S-OFF part of the eng image?
I seem to be stuck on the "boot loop" of the HTC green logo. I tried doing the perm-root option in Visionary r12 and have been here ever since.
A few things:
- I can get into the HBOOT
- I have done a factory reset from bootloader
- I have done a reset from fastboot
- I attempted to do the flash of PC10IMG, but received the "main version is older"
- I can't change version because ADB won't connect for some reason, maybe because i'm in HBOOT?
I can't seem to get ADB to recognize my device, but when I did a factory reset from the bootloader, ADB did finally show the device, but it said "offline"
I'd be happy if I could get this G2 functioning, root or no root.
Anyone have any ideas what I can do to fix this?
thanks!
I also need to add that I did a FACTORY RESET from HBOOT and let it sit for about 2 hours, didn't move off the HTC green logo screen.
If anyone out there can get me up and running i'd gladly pay them $25 for their trouble!!

is your g2 showing s-on or s-off at the HBOOT screen?
It has S-ON
So am I screwed? Is there no way to get this back up? I don't think I ever had S-OFF, when I rebooted from Visionary r12, it stuck right on the HTC boot, so I didn't so anything else. When I went to HBOOT, I think it said "S-ON" then and has always said "S-ON"....
Probably screwed. Seems like you did exactly what you werent supposed to do, as posted in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=838484

I have this exact problem EXCEPT MINES S-OFF.....any tips?
edit** fixed http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=9330530#post9330530
Im having the same problem. after perm root attempt I get stuck at the htc screen unless i pull the battery. I am able to get into h-boot and fast boot but have no clue what to do from there. everything I research assumes that i have other stuff installed here such as third party recovery or hex editor. I wasn't attempting to change Roms or anything like that until I felt a little more comfortable but now im stuck.
Flashing the pc10img was not a good move. Happened to me back in september. I was one of the first to get the g2. Fortunately I was s-on also. That is good in the fact you can return it and get a new one like I did. The second time around I read..read and then I read. Then rooted without a problem. Tell tmo the phone just got stuck and they will give you one for free. Always read the entire thread and links on those threads. I found out the hard way also. There has been stories of that being fixed though. Good luck bro

What if its S-OFF?
Recently my phone was working fine until today. I was on mikfroyo 4.4 everything was fine until i decided to flash an unimportant file, when i reboot it my phone was doing boot loops, so i decided to wipe everything and flash a clean mikfroyo 4.4 again. it worked for a couple hours, later my phone started to freeze, i took the battery out and i got stuck on the white screen logo.. i tried to take battery out for a couple times and nothing.. i tired to go into recovery mode(amon-ra 2.2.1) and i could not get into recovery, it kept on freezing i was like WTF!! then i tried to go into bootloader and that worked fine, but when i choose to boot into recovery via bootloader it did boot into recovery but then it froze again in recovery.. So at the end nothing worked but bootloader.. then i decided to flash a ROM via bootloader (PC36IMG.zip) and that fixed all the problems temporarily (it did not freeze).. but then I notice that that was a stock unrooted PC36IMG file so i lost root and it put back the HTC stock recovery (NOT AMON-RA nor CLOCKWORK).. then the problems started again (the same from above).. but since i rooted my phone via unrevoked forever i had S-OFF.. so i flashed AMON_RA recovery via bootloader to see if I could flash unrevoked-forever-son (that way i could have S-ON and send it to sprint for a replacement) but again it kept on freezing on recovery mode.... so my question is is there anyway i can flash unrevoked-forever-son via bootloader.... that way i can send it to sprint and tell them that my phone keeps on freezing.
Nothing works but bootloader, everything else freezes (recovery mode and while trying to boot the phone)
I will apreciate your time and help.
Did you try running unrevoked son as PC36img.zip?, then the stock RUU. (doesn't sound like it could hurt, lol)
but what kind of files would i put inside pc36img?
You don't put anything inside the PC36IMG.zip file. It comes ready to go from the unrevoked team:
How can this be removed or undone if I need to take my phone in for service?
Download the latest ''S-ON'' tool to a temporary location and follow the installation instructions above to run it. Once your phone is S-ON, you may lose root permanently if you install an official update

- So go here: http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/forever
- Find the section I quoted above
- Download the PC36IMG.zip file
- Put it on the root of your SD card
- Power off
- Hold vol down + power
- Once in HBOOT it will automatically find/ask to run the PC36IMG.zip file
- volia! s-on
I know, i understand that process but my problem is that i cant go into recovery AT ALL it frezzes each time neither to boot my phone normally... the only thing that works fine is bootloader.. so what i am trying to look for is a way to flash the s-on tool via botloader bc i can not go into recovery.
the pc36img contains the stock unrooted ROM - supposed to be flashed via bootloader (i have already done this process so i lost root)
and when you download the S-on tool it comes in a zip file that is suppose to be flash thru recovery not bootloader (and this will be my final step which is not done yet)

This is what i was looking for i hope you can find it!! !!!
I was looking for a way to have the s-on tool inside a PC36IMG.zip.. i didnt think it was possible
But isn't that process (PC36IMG.zip) only for things that suppose to be flash thru bootloader? like slpash screens, recoverys, boot.img? so in what category does the s-on tool fits?
I'm sorry for all this questions but i dont wanna make my phone worse then what already is.
I think your best bet is to hop on freenode and join channel #unrevokedtest
Easiest way to do this is here: http://webchat.freenode.net/
They'll be able to help you for sure. LazyDog and joshua_ are two good people to look for.
thank you man.. but nope is confirmed you can not put put the S-on tool into a PC36IMG.zip ima have to tell sprint that i lost it.

Did you talk to the guys on irc? Seriously, I've seen them preform some miracles.
PS. The chances of Sprint checking s-on/off is highly unlikely.
You can use the pc36img from amon ra's thread to flash the recovery and then use it to lock your nand. Afterward all you have to do is run the ruu one more time and you will be good to go
I agree with what was said before. The likelihood that they'll look at S-On is VERY small. I would just take it in, tell them its freezing all the time, and ask for a replacement. If by some crazy chance they do look at S-On, just play dumb and pretend you don't even know what it is. If you've got a cute lookin girl to help you that'd be willing to take it in, all the better
Otherwise, try running the RUU for your build number. We'll go from there if you still have problems.
I fixed it, it was all due to a ripped cable inside my evo I don't knw how that happened but it happened lol all I had to do was replace my screen.
And yea I did talk to guys from unrevoked.. they r pretty smart and understood my problem quick but were unable to help me.
I ran unrevoked 3 and tried a few things and decided it was not for me, I ran the Sprint RUU and it all worked fine. But under the bootloader screen it still shows S-off. Can I renable it?

Sry to hear that. See if THIS helps.
oooh that sucks. you have to re-root (you can just use unrevoked 3 again), then put the unrevoked s-on tool (found in the FAQ section of this thread http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/forever ) on the root of your sdcard. boot into recovery, and flash it as you would a rom. then check bootloader to make sure it is s-on. if it is, run the ruu again.
just curious, why dont u like root?
I just tried to re-run Unrevoked 3 and it will not reconnect, the tool just says waiting for device.
And I don't like root because of too much power.

usb debugging is probably not on. try that.
too much power? like too much battery consumption (wtf?) or too much power over the phone?
too much stuff for me to f-with.

hahah ok then. so ya turn debugging on (settings, applications, development, usb debugging) and put the phone on charge only and run unrevoked.
ok I found it, I was trying to root from the hboot screen.
Can't I just wait for the OTA from sprint and that would just turn S-back on?

no, it wouldnt turn s-on, and you might not even be able to accept it. if you are having a hard time using unrevoked, seeing as your rom no longer has root permissions, i can lead you through manually flashing amon-ra recovery to your phone and you can flash ur s-on from there.
I just got it to root again using Unrevoked 3 and restored to right after my first root. I should be able to now install the S-on tool and install it from the recovery menu?

That is correct. Also, I'm pretty sure that since you were still S off, you could've just flashed a pc36img of a recovery from the bootloader, flashed the s on tool, and then ran RUU.
Edit : just saw that dk already suggested that. Sorry.

Update I figured it out and ran the S-on tool, booted into the bootloaded and verified it was back on. I then ran the RUU and it should be fully stock and ready to install the OTA?
I just don't want to be that guy does not or has a failed update when the official OTA is out.
Anyone? I dying to know if I can install the next ota.

If you're back to stock, s on, and aren't on the latest OTA, then yes, you can take the OTA if you'd like to. That will bring you up to the latest software update.

sorry for leaving you in the dark for a while. that was one crazy day. but i'm at my comp now so i can help (not that there's anything left to do).
if i were you, i'd double check you are fully unrooted. boot into bootloader, and make sure you are s-on. then boot into recovery and make sure you have no custom recovery, just the stock htc one. also make sure your rom has no superuser app installed. if not, you are all good.
No prob man, I booted into the bootloader and S-On is back on and then tried to boot into recovery, a black screen with a red triangle came up so I assume there's no recovery installed. There is also no superuser Icon in the app draw.
The main reason I returned to stock is,is that this is my primary and only phone. I plan on getting the Nexus S when it come to sprint so I will see you guys again. That way if I bork the NS I got my trusty evo to activate.
Again thank you all for the help.

ok ya ur totally unrooted. enjoy the cage some prefer it there.
just saying, the evo is freaking hard to brick.
Ok here it is, My son Never go s-off and we somehow got a ROM to install, Magnolia_2_0_Final, this one. Now he had revolutionary on it and unlocked. The fun part is, now he can't get into recovery, it just goes to a white HTC screen. We have tried to relock the phone and go back, and tried to do all the tricks of the forums, we are still stuck. I would like for some detailed instructions on how we can get this back if at all. If you could help that would great. Thanks.
It will help if we had more detail on what you exactly have done and how you are doing it.
First with the phone on go to your settings. Look under "POWER" setting and disable fastboot.
Then I recommend pulling battery and reinsert battery. Hold volume down and power button to access hboot. The go to recovery through that.
If you have root access the down load Rom manager from market place and make sure you have recovery installed. If not download and flash from Rom manager. From the Rom manager app you can reboot into recovery.

Recovery
We we have got into recovery and all is ok. We have updated SU and Clockworks. We are running Magnolia 2.0 *Sense 3.5, Android 2.3.5, Tweaks*, S-ON. The weird part is I have no idea how we got the rom on without S-OFF, but here we are. Now we have tried to just install the PH32IMG file and have had no luck with that. No matter what we have tried, all we get to is a loop of the boot screen.
Wait, did you unlock via HTC Unlock first? Either way, unzip the ROM zip, pull the boot image from it and follow the instructions in guide 6 in my sig to flash it in fastboot.
HTC Unlock
Yes we have it unlocked though HTC Unlock and still S-ON with the ROM. Now we just need to either be able to go back and get S-OFF so we can move forward. The problem is if we try to flash the zip from CWM, it doesn't work.
So you're going to need to go to htcdev.com and relock your bootloader. Then, follow attn1's guide to downgrade to 2.3.3, then run revolutionary. You can find guides for all of this online.
Won't turn back on after I relock it
The phone stays at the HBOOT screen and wont reset so I can't use adb devices at all because it won't see that it is plugged in. what do I do?
Coming from 2.3.5
Oh and I'm also coming from 2.3.5 if that makes any difference
I think you're gonna have to go back to S-ON a diff way. There's a thread in the general section on how. Follow it and then revolutionary s-off.
All Ideas have FAILED so far

This is what I said to begin with. Now I thank anyone who could help in this situation. We can get into recovery, we have a rom with 2.3.5 sence 3.5, s-on, CWM, and we have tried all of the ideas so far. We need to know is there a better solution getting this phone back to stock and s-off.
