Got a Droid Inc off craigslist for my buddy, who threw CM7 on it. He's getting really poor battery life out of it -- less than day with what he and I would define as pretty light usage. So we're trying to determine if he should buy a new battery for it, or if this is just how things are with the Droid Inc. He's coming from an AT&T Nexus One that also ran CM7. Obviously the Droid Inc uses a bit more juice and packs a bit smaller battery, but this discrepancy seems pretty high.
His phone is the SLCD version, so it really can't be more than a year old, can it? Do you guys have any recommendations on how to diagnose the health of the battery itself so we can figure out if it's even worth replacing?
Our comedy option is replacing it with the Seidio 1750 mAh battery, but reviews seem really mixed on Amazon. Widespread reports of the phone heating up and a really wimpy warranty from Seidio. Anyone have any feedback on this?
Thanks much.
If he is willing, he should try Miui. You get great battery life and smooth performance from it (been testing it all week, so I know).
If not try out some different Kernels, see if that helps. I would recommend some, but I am not familiar with CM7, so I wouldn't know what works best with it.
Hope I helped,
From my expierience MIUI is comparable to CM7.
Make sure he isn't overclocking, and definately use chad's incredikernel. The one provided with CM7 does tend to suck more power. Also options to flash lower voltages with chad's incredikernel.
If you are planning to get a new battery, go with an official HTC battery. There is one designed for the HTC EVO that is 1500MAH or go with a 1900mAh battery (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1134076)
Both of the above will fit in the stock casing, though some say the 1900mAh is a little snug but still completely snaps on in the back. I personally have the 1900mAh and I think it's a great buy and would suggest you pick it up if you're looking for more battery life without compromising your phones size.
Possible the guy bump-charged that battery to death or did other things that made that battery hard to keep a charge.
Another thing to note is that once you install a new ROM or Kernel, you should *always* wait 2-3 days for your phone to fully calibrate the battery. Often times it doesn't full charge after you first flash a ROM because your phone thinks the battery is smaller than what it is, so it'll discharge quickly. You can speed up this process by fully discharging all the way down to 0% then charging it all the way back up. Don't do this often as it's potentially damaging to the long-term life of the battery.

OR you could do one of the following:
"Remember when trying new kernels for best results.. Charge until green, then boot into recovery, then advanced and wipe battery stats, then power off and let charge until green and good to go. This gets the results without waiting 3 or 4 days of charging. Also you wont see the unplug and go from 100% to 83% in 15 minutes."
"Actually, to recalibrate, this is what I'd recommend.
Charge the phone to 100%
Turn it off. The LED will turn red again, wait for it to turn back to green.
Boot into recovery and wipe battery stats.
Reboot, then unplug."
That was the advice I was given for my thread. I haven't tried them yet myself, but they sound like good things to do.
Now that I've learned a thing our two about Lithium Ion batteries, I'm going back to the stock 1300mAh battery for a minute....at least until I can find a 1500 mah Evo
Battery to put in!

Thanks for the detailed response, POQbum. I think this gives us a good place to start out; that's pretty awesome that you can shove a 1900 mAh Evo battery in there.

Yes, if you're wanting to do something like wipe the battery stats. I could be wrong but I don't think there's a way to do that without being rooted.

And it doesn't seem to charge pat 70%. I'll leave it on the charger until it is at 100% (not 90% like some people have issues with), and then when I take it off, within 2-3 hours I am down to anywhere from 72-68%. This isn't with heavy use, for example this morning it has been off for 2 hours, it is at 75% and I did nothing with it except read one email.
Just testing things out, I charged it while the phone was off, and it seemed to discharge slower.
Is this a common thing with these batteries or is mine somehow defective?
Thanks.
Did you recalibrate the battery in your recovery? Charge to full, boot recovery, wipe battery stats, then let it run till it dies.

I did, but I might try that again. It may not have been actually at 100% (I didn't turn it off, because I didn't know about the issue when I calibrated).
All the other threads had the answer but.....
The driver that has the stats for the 3500mah battery isn't there.
They only included the driver with stats for 1500mah.
If you want to fully charge the battery, you have to do it externally. Even with phone powered off, it may not fully do it.

+1.
The evo can't charge the seidio or any non-htc battery properly. Get an external charger and watch your battery life increase with every charge. I don't even wipe battery stats anymore.

That would make sense... I might ditch it then, if I can't reliably charge it 100% because the battery door is pretty hard to remove compared to the stock one and I don't want to end up breaking it one day.
Is that something that would be in the ROM? I'm just wondering if it's worth holding out hope for someone to write a driver for it in CM6 or something.
Yeah I just let it charge until it turned green, turned it off and let it charge until green again (another half hour or so), unplugged it and did it again and it is now at 89% after literally just wiping the battery stats and booting up.
Maybe I'm just being too neurotic about it. It lasts 2 days, I guess I should be happy, but with the stock battery I got 30-36 hours using CM6 and Snap, so I was hoping for more than that.
Been having similar issues did a full wipe the last Rom I loaded and now two hours after unplugged I'm still at 100% so who knows.

It's hard to say if it's in the rom because the evo itself will not charge any non-htc battery correctly even when it is turned off. It seems there are both hardware and software controls to ensure nothing but the evo battery gets charged correctly.
Here is what I did about the battery door http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=786101
The fact that this battery has been out for so long, so many people have it, and HTC knows about this flaw and hasnt done anything about it is absolutely pitiful and HTC should be ashamed of themselves.
As everyone has said, the only way to get a proper 100 charge is in an external charger. The closest way to to do it in the phone is to leave the phone charging overnight, unplug it when you wake up, and plug it in about 5 minutes later to top it off. Youll get close but it still wont be true 100.
Either way, the only way to properly charge any extended battery for the evo is in a wall charger.
dang i should have canceled my order. Seidio's stupid cancellation policy made me not do it. "cancellations after 2 hrs incur a fee" Now im going to have a Evo with a pot belly and a empty stomach. BS

Yeah it seems like I guess it's mostly HTC's fault in this manner. I'm back on the stock battery for now. I might just keep the extended battery at ~60 (apparently the best way to store Lithium Ion) and when I plan on heading out for a weekend trip or something like that, I'll charge the battery up and put that in my phone.
For everyday use, having to remove the battery to charge it sucks.
What would be ideal is if HTC allowed you to key in the MAH of the battery you have installed in your phone or something along those lines to ensure the battery gets charged correctly . I know its a long stretch but hey I can dream ROFL . This charging bug has been the one major thing preventing me from getting an extended battery . I have toyed with the idea of getting a chinese one for cheap just to play around with and so forth but not to drop the cash Seidio wants for theirs . HTC needs to address the charging issue anyways , most users that use a wall charger for their stock batteries have reported improved battery life . Its sad when a cheap wall charger from china out performs charging a battery better than a 600 dollar phone is able to .
I dug thru the code for the battery driver. There seems to be 3-4 different driver sets, but all are 1500mah or less.
It's been many, many years since I programmed, but the structure has an array of temps, max, min MAH, charge rate, and quite a few other specifics relating to battery.
I'm not sure the logic between the charge circuit, the battery and how it knows which battery is inserted, but some of this info is parsed into the logs while it's charging.
A decent programmer could probably code and recompile this into the OS. That programmer isn't ME. I switched to engineering and networking too long ago to remember enough not to blow stuff up.
This is the one thing keeping me from purchasing a hicap battery. Good to hear that it is software related though. Maybe if they got a pool going some enterprising dev will take a whack at it. Disclaimers work

I'm quite sure they and many others could, but not everyone has the Seidio battery, compared to the numbers of EVO users.
It's probably not worth their time and effort to bother.
What WOULD be nice is if the Seidio folks had programmers instead of just sales folks and could code their own patch for their own products.
I won't be holding my breath tho for any solution. it's ok for me, I have the external charger from my TP2 days. Plus spare batteries as well and don't mind switching when needed. I knew of the issue and was prepared for it before purchasing.

Yeah I wasn't so much prepared for it. I heard a few things about it, but nothing solid for sure, I should have done some more research. All the reviews on websites were glowing, but I usually take that with a grain of salt.
Too bad even if Seidio had programmers, I'm on CM6 so that wouldn't help me too much haha. On my stock battery I'm getting around 24-28 hours which is plenty fine I guess. Not looking forward to when the battery starts losing its maximum charge, though.
So i don't have an external charger...but i followed the instructions via seidio...
heres what i got:
Rom: CM6 Final Stable
SetCPU: 245/1152 Conservative (Freq Step = 10)
Took phone off charger (from phone) aat 5:30AM
will post back later today with results (hopefully good)
Which battery do you prefer?
According to http://batteryboss.org/ the OEM 1500mAh is the best.
I just wanted to see what the users have to say, I am assuming I will get a responses of each person claiming theirs is great. I am looking for someone who may has had one or two of these and their opinion.
Either way just looking for opinions before I buy...
Wow I got all mixed up.
I was thinking of "HTC Incredible 2150mAh Extended battery"
- post edited.
I'm guessing you're looking for a battery that doesn't increase bulk?
The options available aren't much better than stock sadly :/
Depending how old your current battery is and how much stress you've put on it by draining all the way or bump charging, getting any new battery you may see better battery life. Still would suggest the HTC Extended, but just my opinion
I have the Seidio battery and of course the stock battery. I can't imagine how they could say the stock battery is best. My Seidio greatly outperforms stock, and does so consistently. I can usually get between ten and twelve hours out of it under moderate to heavy use. As for the other battery you mentioned, I can't comment on it since I have no experience. I'm curious to hear what others have to say though. I've never heard of it but I'm always looking to squeeze a little more quality time from my phone. Anyway, I wont say mine is best but, I can say, honestly, that you wouldn't be disappointed with the purchase.
Edit: With regards to cases, Seidio's Innocase line is excellent. They slide on end to end for easier battery changes and they're 1mm thin but very solid. And +1 on the custom kernel. SETCPU as well (if you're rooted.)

They are saying OEM incredible batter is better, they are saying the OEM Evo battery is better. Inc comes with 1300mAh, Evo comes with 1500mAh.
They also said the 1750 only uses 79% of its capacity, meaning your only getting 1382mAh...
But if your happy that is good to know, improvement from current stock battery.

I have to wonder if they bump charged any of the tested batteries for the Dinc. I haven't read the article yet but I will when I get a Chance. But, as you may know, a known issue with the Dinc is its inability to fully charge its batteries without unplugging, powering off, then plugging in again. If not, you're battery will truly only have about 80% charge.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
You shouldn't bump charge, it kills the battery quickly.
They have that feature to keep the battery more stable and last longer.
It charges it to ~90% (you'll see it drop from 100% to around 90% very quickly once you first unplug it) and cuts off at ~10% (when phone shows 0%).
It's how Li-Ion batteries work and you really shouldn't manipulate it so you get more unless you are wanting to buy a new battery every month.
If you keep doing that you will start getting worse performance bump charging than people who have been regularly charging for much longer than you have been bumping.
Just a suggestion though.

Thanks for the info POQbum. I wasn't aware of that. After reading so much about how the Dinc needed to be bump charged, I guess I just assumed it was ok and didn't have negative effects on the battery. But I do have to say, I've been charging that way since September without any noticeable issues. Battery life is still great and haven't replaced any batteries. If anything, my battery life seems to have improved. For the first time today, i was able to go ten hours on my stock 1300. Maybe its CM7. Anyway, I'm in no way trying to say you're wrong though because what you say makes sense. I'm simply sharing my own personal experience with these batteries.

I recommend the Seideo 1750. The Seideo cells are Japanese compared to the stock HTC Chinese cells. I get at least 3-5 more hours of battery compared to the stock one.

That batteryboss link is still flying? The 1750 is definately a step above the stock. Not sure what that dude has against seidio but keep in mind he is one guy who basically ran one test on one battery iirc. My seidio 3500 will take some serious abuse and still last a day or 2. The 1750 was way way better than stock...I'd say a good 3 hours or so better for me. Anyway the best investment i made was a cheap ebay wall charger so I can just swap in any battery that fits my needs for the day...I switch between stock, cheap knockoffs, the HTC 2100 and the seidio 3500 now, sold the 1750.

I got two 1800mAh batteries for about $30, and experienced the same thing. After awhile though, I realized that you have to do a few things to get better battery life.
1) Charge the battery to full while the phone is on.
2) Unplug and plug back in to verify that the phone is fully charged (green led)
3) Turn the phone off
4) Unplug, plug in, and wait for a green led
5) Repeat that 5-10 times
6) Then while still plugged in, reboot into Recovery and wipe the battery stats via the advanced menu.
7) Reboot, and use your phone as you normally would.
This may sound like alot, but it really only take about 5 mins. Even after wipe, it will still take about 5 full discharges to reap the better battery life. Hope this helps!
I think its just luck of the draw on aftermarket batteries (the cheap ones at least)
I have heard good and bad on ALL of them.
I got the Chichitec/htcexpress 1800 batteries with charger. Came in the other day and I couldn't be happier. 14 hours on initial charge, that's unheard of for me. On my stock battery I had to keep the phone plugged in most of the day at work just to still have juice by the time I got home. And supposedly these things start acting even better after a few charge cycles.
(Fits with stock battery door too)
But for every person that has a good experience with any of these companies, there's someone else with a horror story.

Could have told you that before you bought it, ratings by aftermarket reputable companies are close and never accurate...if they rate it at 1750, it's probably 1500-1650... The stock is 1500 so yes you wasted your money. Now on the other hand, the 3500 is the best investment anyone could ever make....
It's been proven long ago seidio over rates their batteries. The "1750" is actually just under 1500, so less capacity then the stock battery.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
just terribad in my opinion, gonna stick to my seidio 3500. rather have the size and life than a small size and a measly bump from the 1750mah battery
They rated it less than a 1500 stock battery.
Key with extended batteries is that you actually have to charge them longer than your phone indicates.
Example: I phone said it was fully charged at 3:26am in the morning. Yet it continue to charge until at least 6:45am before it was constant. Granted I am using an SBC kernel but even without, you need to let it charge the night. Don't let the green light fool you. It takes a few extra hours to charge even if the led light is green!
You should just about fully drain your battery and then let it charge overnight. If you aren't on an SBC kernel you may actually want to charge your phone while it's off so that the battery dictates the charge.
You should also wipe your battery stats once the phone is fully charged.
Try that and see if it works for you. I know that I was getting great battery life even on the stock battery. I play "Word With friends" (at least 15 matches running) a lot (at least 15 matches running concurrently) and this game actually drains battery. I still got through the day fine though I also carry a Touch Pro 2 and having the batteries that are the same size allows me to swap when needed.
I have the 2650mah one from sprint and my 3500mah seidio coming in the mail tomorrow. I'll probably write a review for it later. Note, On my 2650mah, it's already on its 12th hour and I was was playing WWF, surfing the web, made several calls and it's still at 77%. I will leave it off the charger tonight and see how it fairs tomorrow.
Good Luck!
I have tested these and if they do last longer then stock, it is only like maybe 20 mins. I have an external charger as well as running the SBC kernel to get a complete charge. I have the sprint 2600 battery as well and love it. Not many cases for it but I have modified a sedio rugged and ballistic to work with it. I let my wife use it for a few days in her evo and had to fight to get it back from her.

I purchased a really cheap extended battery about a month and a half ago on amazon and it practically doubled my battery life for a while. Now for some reason its no where near that performance and will only last me a day or so. I already wiped my battery stats, but no luck. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!
OMG ONLY A DAY?! YOU POOR THING!
No really though. Maybe it's an app you've downloaded recently. Do a full wipe If a full day of battery life just isn't good enough for you.

Any of the ext batteries good??
May I ask what the battery was? I got a really cheap one off amazon that is supposedly 3500mAh, but it only has a slight difference in charge time =/
Hey,
I got the same extended battery off amazon, it works amazing, anyways there are several things that could be causing this issue:
1. Like someone posted before me check your apps, see whats running. Make sure to look out for the new ones because it might be running in the backround where even the task killer cant reach and killing your batter D:
2. Are you using gps 4g or any other features like that?
3. If you are rooted did you just flash a new rom? because with different roms you will get many different factors that effect your batt, with MIUI I would get over a day on the standard battery, and on sense roms il get maybe only half a day.
4. Those cheap batts are made for little and sold at little from China, so the quality isnt always the best, and it might be time to get a new one!
Hope I helped! and I hope you find a solution! good luck!

Since this a very old post, I'm sure that you've already resolved the issue. It has been my experience that while L-ion batts don't have a memory, their ability to take a charge can be affected by inadequate initial charges and NOT running them totally dead, at least once in a while. Whereas wiping battery stats will help the phone's OS to ensure maximum charge and usage, the battery still needs to go through a full cycle.
I hope that I'm not wearing you out with crap you already know. (Let's just assume that someone else needs this information, too).
Now to get REALLY nerdy:

Read that if you really want to understand L-Ion batteries.
Then, you could just have a really cheap or bad battery pack. BTW, what's that brand again? I'm about to buy one myself...LOL.
Hi I currently have mikg rom installed on my evo but my battery life is still horrible,, does anyone know any roms that use less juice on the battery.. thats all im really concerned about? thanks
I always liked the TN Shooter ROM. Sense 3.0, working 4G, life is good. I cannot say anything about battery life though, because I use two extended batteries, but from what I can tell battery life isn't too bad. Link --

How old is your battery? When i first rooted my EVO, it could sleep overnight and lose 2%, and after a year, it wouldn't stay on 100% for more than 30 seconds. I could literally sit and watch the battery drain at this point. Age I'd a big factor in determining the battery life.
Another big factor is whether or not you are using an HTC battery, or if you purchased a 3rd party battery. Just keep those things in mind.

First things first. This belongs in Q/A . That being said. Did you do a Clean Install of the Rom ? Did you restore any Data ? What Kernel are you using ? Also this has been mentioned, but I will reiterate. If your Battery is old, or if you are using a knock off Battery it affects the Battery life.

After a long period of battery use,it will degrade as time goes on and you will lose battery cells and the battery gets weaker and wont keep a full charge, the best practice is to charge your phone fully, then let it discharge until it shuts itself off, then recharge again and do the same thing, then recharge and the battery will stay charged a little longer,is what this supposidly does is try building the cells back, but its only temporary, especially when you have an worn battery, the best roms to use for battery life, from my experience is aamikam and Tommys roms, alot of time it will also have to do with the kernel, especially if its an OC'ed kernel, look for an SBC(superior battery charge) kernel.
ok well idk what kernal it is because i cant figure out how to add one yet,, but maybe it was the batterys i bought this extended battery off ebay which had a high mah rating i thought it would last longer but it didnt wasnt a oem battery i didnt know there was a difference so i went ahead and bought a factory battery today .. thanks
Try discharging the battery than give it a full charge. If that doesn't help, try a Rom called SOS X/N.

BTW not sure if you have one or ever heard of anker batteries but anyways they sell a charger with the battery. My original EVO battery started to die very fast. I bought an anker and it seems whenever I charge the phone via USB charger vs the anker battery charger the battery will die much faster. You should try buying the anker battery charger & use the charger to charge your battery, do not use the USB cord to charge it & see if that helps any
