Check spare parts app. Look at partial wake usage.
Sent from that one Guy.
go to about phone, then battery. see if awake and on time is the same. if they are, bad. then go into battery usage, and see what the graph looks like.
then open up spare parts, go to battery history, hit the top box, and select partial wake usage. see if anything is not normal aka filling more than a few pixels at all. then check all the other top box options to see if anything isnt normal. then we can diagnose.
what rom/kernel?

Yeah if the issue continue ima go to Sprint and see if I can get a new battery seems like the issue is just my phone reading my battery wrong

Not sure a new battery would fix the issue... but hey, if you can get them to give you one, can't hurt.

That dosen't sound horriable, how long do you want the phone to last? I tried a sbc kernel with my extended battery and started getting crazy batterylife like 85 % after like 15 hour off charger with data off, and little use, mostly txting other then the risk of exploding battery I am considering going back to the sbc kernel. I am trying one of the new hdmi netarchy kernels
I learned turning data off can make ur phone last forever, if I plan on going out I will usually kill data, and turn it on when needed.

Yeah its not too bad my main things a 2 to 4 percent drain from sending a text or 2 within the minute and thanks for the tip

What exactly causes this? Every once in a while my battery, which is normally fantastic, seems to spring a leak! I installed spare parts and check it from time to time to make sure nothing is going bananas on me. Today I noticed that within about 5 hours of unplugging my phone, two quick calls, and a few texts, my battery was down to 65% (and still falling). I checked spare parts and under "other usage", it shows "running" 100% since last boot. Partial wake usage shows android system nearly full. This doesn't look right, and it certainly isn't acting like it does any other day.
I'm currently using ultimate juice. I have system panel and watchdog but I honestly haven't even reinstalled them since I rooted a few months ago. (Battery has been that good with MIUI...) Maybe I should??
Spare parts is new to me. Just downloaded it the other day, then this battery thing happened, and while scanning the forum just for ****s and giggles as I do every evening, I saw this post. Could somebody make light of this for me? Thanks...
same problem here i was unplugged for five mins and i lost 4 percent battery! hate it!
srry but most battery problems which have no solution are from a bad match of kernel, rom, and phone. just keep flashing stuff until your phone likes something. thats why some evos (even never rooted) get 1300 quadrants and 30 hrs battery and others get 800 quadrants and 5 hrs battery.
edit: if there is a problem though, then it is fixable. i just dont know much more on how to find it besides that....

No it will not. It has a charge script that stops when it reaches 100% then monitors the battery after that and will trickle charge when it drops a couple of percent.
Actually this is a process used to calibrate battery when you first buy one or is the first time you buy a phone. You drain it and charge it overnight. I do this too but not recently because airplane mode allows for no percentage drop..... I don't believe it is harmful but may prove to be over an extended period as are many things. Id say just turn the phone on airplane mode and it shouldn't drop but 1-2 if any percentage.

No it is not harmful. However any rechargeable battery wears over time. I have charged my phone overnight since the September 2010 without issue.
No it will not harm it is what I discovered
Here are some sources that say it will not damage it:

And some that say the regulator chip may be harmed:

I leave mine in, it's much more convienient...
A general charge overnight will not harm ur battery. But every now and then..u want to perform a charge cycle. Fully chargee it, and let it drain completely. U do this twice. It just basically resets the battery cells. Our phones use a lithium-ion battery plus..its the improved lith battery.

NO. NO. NO. Uberpinguin, the one who posts cm7, hates battery calibration, and I'll preach his message for him. Cycling the battery is stupid, it wears life, and wiping battery stats is stupid. Each battery has a specific uuid (I think that's what it is) that tells batterystats.bin what battery it is, and then it THEN locates the info it needs. Not "oh hey, my phone is calibrated for someone elses battery".

Explain ****ty battery life then when i don't calibrate it when i flash a rom.
When i flashed over to CM7 my phone was getting on average 10-14Hrs depending on usage if i was heavily using it it would be from 6-8Hrs.
After i calibrated it i went from 6-8 on heavy to 12-15 on Heavy and medium usage went from 10-14 to 18-20Hrs. And minimal use ending me up with 24+Hrs
So please explain? because i hate calibrating it but it works.

Battery drain always seems terrible for a short time after flashing a new rom. It does clear up.
Letting your battery drain completely is NOT good for your phone, though I'm unaware of what how it may affect the battery itself. But as I understand it, it is not necessary in any way for the battery itself- so it's useless and doing so will only help you corrupt the data on your phone.
I've been charging mine nightly since Nov 2010 and it's fine.
Those of you with serious battery drain - do yourself a favor and try staying on the same rom for more than 36 hours.

That is an EXT4/journaling thing and has nothing to do with your phone. MTD and RFS do not have this problem. At time of purchase the Techs and Samsung recommend this battery cycling and running the battery all the way down.

When your phone is on the charger, it will charge to 100%. After it hits 100%, it will remove itself from the charger and run on battery. This will go down to a certain percentage (maybe 95%, maybe 90%), at which point the phone will reattach itself to the charger and charge back up to 100%. The drop you are seeing is when you take the phone off the charger while it is in the midst of one of these cycles. I would assume it still shows 100% battery but drops down to what it's really at.
Thanks but my battery doesn't get consistent until around 90 and lower so I'm sure your rite but why does charge to 100%

It's really not an issue, it's just how it works. It gets to 100% and instead of charging more and frying itself, it stops charging. When you take it off the charger at 100%, it's not really at 100%, it's somewhere in between 90 and 100. The reason it says 100 is that if you let it charge all night and it said 93% in the morning you'd have already called to Samsung to complain, as would have everyone else.
The HTC thunderbolt did this as well. To protect the battery, once it reaches 100%, it stops charging. Then once it hit 95% or somewhere in the 90s again I believe, it kicked back on. You have to bump charge. Though I believe once I started installing custom roms, the issue seemed to disappear. So maybe its in the code or something.

Every phone does it. It is to protect the battery's life.
Batteries suffer when they are 100% charged and when they are really low.
That's why when you get a brand new battery is it charged about 50% because it extends the battery's life while in the shelf.
When I disconnect in the mornings it's always 97 or 98%. who knows when it stops charging in the middle of the night. but from 98% to 75% it is really quick. maybe because during that time I'm on the train listening to music and browsing the internet at the same time.
With iphone 4, I always disconnected at 100% in the mornings and after the train ride the battery was around 88%.

In the long run maybe a little, for how long most people keep their phones it won't matter though. This was actually something HTC recommended we do for the Evo 4G cause it was the exact same way.
I actually did have one of my batteries discharge too much to where it wouldn't come back, but all I had to do was take it in to Sprint and they gave me a new one for free.

I don't know how you got that from what I wrote. I was just saying that if you woke up and the battery said 95% after charging all night you'd think something was wrong with the phone, as would everyone else. The reason it says 100% is that the phone manufacturers don't want to explain that it's not a problem to a million callers a day.

Not true.
The best thing for a Lithium Ion battery is to keep constantly charging it as much as possible. These are not the old nickle batteries of ~10 years ago. The internal circuitry inside your phone's charging system is what keeps the lithium cell in it's "happy range".
However, once a cell is outside of it's "happy range" one of two things will happen:
1) Thermal run-away; this is when an overcharged cell begins to generate it's own heat by consuming Lithium, creating more heat, consuming even more Lithium, creating even more heat, etc... When you hear of people's laptop batteries catching on fire in airplanes or where ever, it's usually because of thermal run-away.
2) Cell depletion; if a cell is discharged too low it looses it's ability to retain a charge. It's not a "Hmmm... my batter doesn't seem to hold a charge as long anymore" like the old nickle batteries, but it won't hold ANYTHING at this point.
In closing, there is nothing wrong with "bump charging" your Lithium battery. The charging circuitry has been HEAVILY scrutinized and tested for safety measures and will never overcharge your cell (assuming the HW is opreating correctly).
I've had this phone for about a month. Started off on stock, and rooted it and flashed different ROMs and kernels. I never really got good battery life with any ROM. Typically I would get around 7 to 10 hours of moderate usage.
I fully went back to stock firmware and kernel using ODIN, to flash 2.3.6. I rooted it and removed some bloatware apps. BUT, the battery life seems so bad.. it's been 2 days, I've done calibration 2 or 3 times.
Leaving my phone idle, in one spot, I lose about 4-5% an hour. 4G Data on, wifi off, 2/4 bars of signal, sync on (only gmail, google docs, contacts, calendar).
But today, I think it got worse, as shown here: http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f380/wordk4/SC20120319-230121.png
Graph: http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f380/wordk4/SC20120319-230126.png
Note: the data icon on top shows that it's on 3G, because I moved out of good signal area when I took the screenshots. The phone was idle in a spot with 4G getting 3-5mbps.
What's wrong with this? The phone is a month old, so I don't think it's a battery problem. I've calibrated 2-3 times since I went back to stock.
Also, don't recommend me to use Juice Defender. I use Google Voice to call and text, so I need data on all the time. And I know this phone can last over a day with data on (my friend has the same phone and it has lasted 2 days on one charge, completely stock firmware).
ALSO, when I press "Android System" on the battery history, here's a list of what it shows:

I see easily over 12 hours on a charge with my phone, and i use it heavily... 2 to 3 hours of phone time (at the least) wifi tether here and then, a lot of facebook iming and checking. Reading....
Something i noticed though. I got the phone in October or so, and the battery life started off pretty bad. I didnt do anything special, i figured it would be bad with such a massive screen. Over time though the battery improved, and now im seeing wonderful battery life. I usually unplug it at about 6:30 or so in the morning when i head to work, and yesterday at 10-something is when it started *****ing it had low battery life.
Moral of the story? Be patient, itll get better as time goes by.

Only 200mAh over stock, hows this supposed to help if you have a sleep mode issue or app issue?
Bringz me back to my first statement.
Your kernel is NOT allowing deep sleep mode for whatever reason, your best bet would be make a backup
Delete data/factory reset and try it over a day.. if it works good, its an app issue, still the same. It is undoubtedly the kernel. Why pay more for maybe an hour out of your phone?
Run some actual tests to clarify the issue first..
There. I said my peace
If you tried everything else try recalibrating the battery.
I have seen this happen most often when flashing new ROMs. Especially if you did not wipe your system, data, and caches before install it seems to encourage this.
To Recalibrate Battery (must have custom recovery like cwm):
Charge phone to FULL
(I highly recommend AC charger for this)
Reboot into recovery
Look for wipe battery stats (should be I'm advanced if not main menu)
Unplug phone and restart it
Now FULLY KILL THE BATTERY
(for faster results set mp3 or video on repeat and let her rip)
Fully charge one more time and done
(again I highly suggest AC adaptor)
Keep in mind if you set your CPU to Max frequency or leave a demanding app running and CPU is set to allow full usage ondemand or performance the phone will kill battery very quickly.
Same if you leave antenna on auto 4G and it is weak around you and phone is always searching it will go fast as well.

xFrozen: have you downloaded cpuspy to actually see if your phone is hitting deep sleep?

You sir, are a n00b, calibrating the battery is useless to this device and actually done automaticly.
So your post is useless and rather a waste of everyones time even reading. So thanks.
@above
Its obviously not hitting deep sleep, there's no way it can be and be draining the battery this quick.
@OP
As suggested above use cpuspy to check on the cpu when idle,
Sleep mode should kick in within 30sec to a minute.
Also chek my reply a few posts up and follow steps there..
Ignore Realn00b's post
Again:
@Realn00b
Please take the time to read up on batterystats.bin and find out what its for,
You don't need cwm to delete, just root explorer.. its in:
Data/system/batterystats.bin
Also, the entire basis of this is stupidity and was takin way out of context.
Batterystats is used to cache the active information of running applications (uptime/cpu usage, etc. NOT battery percents)
And should only be deleted under very very rare occasions (effecting above)
Your battery percent, is actually the mAh
Your system collects the information from a chip on the battery, among the information read, max mAh and current mAh.
The device then calculates from these the value we know as the percent.
Meaning, no device with a lithium ion battery stores charge information for the battery, making the entire purpose of your post for this, or ANY device not only useless, but also a little pathetic considering you would actually try to post a tip on something you are obviously completely uneducated about.
Please don't provide tips unless you are 100% sure of the situation and are actually educated on the material. Thanks

I originally purchased it for two reasons:
1. For long trips or for when I'll be gaming a lot
2. It had no reviews, so I figured I should buy it and test it. It's cheap anyways, $11.
Also, I'm on stock kernel. Everything stock + rooted.
I just did a re-flash with ODIN, so it has all the bloatware back on. I rooted and installed most of the main apps I use (facebook, aim, xda, google apps, games, basic things).
Currently I have sync on for Google contacts, calendar, and gmail. Facebook syncs with existing google contacts. T-Mobile contact sync off. Dropbox auto uploads camera photos on wifi only (I rarely take photos).
It's charging right now, at 50%. I might not have time to leave it idle today, so I could try in the morning if I have time.

Thanks.
And please excuse realn00b up there..
He didn't know wat he was talking about.. read my post below it if you want an explanation.
Take a look at the safe to remove apps list aswell I'll see if I can find it on google pages for you. I definitely recommend
Deleting unndeeded applications and even replace stock with third party where applicable.

That is a good deal.. doesn't say if it has NFC though, got some tags comming now
So definitely want that lol xD i dont want one of those bulky ass ones though
Just like the topic says I just want to know how long should I initially charge the battery and how would I go about doing that if I don't have just a battery charger? It's a stock oem battery I just got from eBay and it didn't come with any instructions so I'm trying to figure out the discharge and charge instructions also so I don't fry this battery

No special steps necessary.
right. plug it in like normal. Some say to discharge oob, then charge all the way. i personally just let it drain 1-2%, then plug in and charge full uninterrupted.

Thank you... The question is when do I let it fully discharge every time? Or eveeyrime it gets around 2 percent start to charge it?

Yes That's correct steps. Anytime bellow 10 % is good time to charge. Do try to wait till its 100 % before unplugging though. Lithum Ion has only so many Cycles.

What I meant was I just let it drop by 1-2%, not to that point. Imo on first charge there's just not a need to do a full discharge like some say. But when I plug it in I leave it alone till ready. Then first cycle I drop to 5-10% and charge fully once more. After that it doesn't really matter. (That first full cycle is just habit for me. I don't believe it's necessary though.)
Li ion batteries are much more forgiving than people think. Lots of incorrect rumors and info out there. That's why I suggested that link earlier.

Ah I understand... I just want the longest out of my battery but now I'm debating on what phone to get for black Friday! Anyway thank you for the help I feel like discharging it completely and charging it completely is the way to go instead of plugging it in here and there.

I haven't bothered with following any guidelines in a long time, and after a year and a half my battery was still running strong.

Do note, if you drain 100 % or nearly there then after you plug in, the phone won't turn on for first 20 minutes or so. It will start afterwards.

Aright thank you both... I try not to use the phone on charge anyway so that 20 minute thing is fine plus I hear it's bad for the battery and I feel like that's what caused My battery to fry in less than a year

I personally don't even care. I just charge it whenever I want regardless of what percent, and leave it charging overnight and get 100% when I wake up. The best thing about this phone is that it has a removable battery. If my battery ever dies, I'll just buy another one.
