Just for fun I wrote a flashlight app. I know, there are already a few others but this was a first dive in to a windows phone 7 app and I thought I would share:

The only glitch I have seen is toggling QUICKLY between on and off doesnt work and the light stays on. Exitting usually fixes it, however if it doesnt then relaunch and the re-initialize of the camera will turn it off.
The XAP is attached.
I assume this uses the LED of the camera instead of the screen (as most other apps do)? Too bad I am on an HTC 7 Mozart with a xenon flash
Perfect! Been wanting one of these for some time now. The flash on the Focus is too bright not to use as a flashlight. Thanks!
Just a few words about UI and functionality: HTC has a perfect example how to flashlight application should be implemented. Why don't you use HTC assets and add same (if possible of course - two levels of flashlight works only on HTC handsets) functionality?
Hmm, how long before M$ allows dev's to toggle functions via live tiles?
That would be a handy feature for this app

Interesting thought... and to tell you the truth it wouldnt be hard to just issue the toggle on launch and then quit which would essentially do what you want. The app would initialize then toggle the cam and quit back to the tile screen.
No, get switch on titles - not so good idea! But have a HTC assets and functionality sounds much better. If you want I can send you a HTC flashlight graphics.

I understood what you meant but since its not available I was just suggesting that it was as close as I could get
Why wouldnt you just use the HTC one if you wanted its graphics/functions?
Sure you can PM me a link to get the HTC stuff.
It's simple - 'cause I have (personally) Samsung Focus (but have a bunch of different development handsets at office)
P.S. Actually I can spend a few hours and write that app by myself but if you already started...
doesn't work with hd7

the htc solution is absolutely ugly and does not fit the windows phone 7 metro theme and application design AT ALL.
best would be to be able to do it straight from a tile. but i doubt it's possible.

HTC solution is absolutely PERFECT: well designed, nice looking and very functional. And HTC have a similar (same UI) application for Android handsets. No chance to compare with crap published here (including mine), it such a very professional flashlight app implementation (but they have an access to the flashlight directly - turning on/off very fast, ability to set LED level)!
Who cares about "metro theme"? Flashlight is a flashlight; if you wanna more "metro theme" - install all useless crap from market (countless converters, calculators etc. etc.).
i want consistency. htc does not provide me that with their ugly non-fitting applications. unlike most other developers. metro isn't a complicated design guideline, so seeing all those apps from htc is really sad.
if you want to have apps in all form of designs with no consistency, then do so. i want stuff made for wp7. not stuff ported from android.
BTW, have you ever seen HTC flashlight app? (you are really sounds very strange to me...) Could point to any WP7 flashlight app (including topic starter's) what can be even comparable with HTC's app?..
And what's wrong with HTC flashlight? The nice flashlight graphics on the black background? Metro theme app bar menus? Hmm...
Also, I'd like to see some of your apps (of course if you have one!) You are the author of one of the countless and useless "converters, calculators" etc. (Marketplace full of that crap)?

i would appreciate feedback and feature-requests.
Your last picture posted here has a grammatical error - 'has been', not 'has be'.
Tried this app. Very smooth.. in fact, a bit too sensitive.. When i scrolled, I keep opened links accidentally.
A ligther background or something more 'relax' would be nice I think. This is a bit too 'dark' to my liking.
hey bro, i tried looking hard, couldnt find the gramatical error.... i might be going blind
as for the over sensitivity, rest assured i would be passing the feedback to obelix, the creator of the slider control; which is used in this app. I have to give him credit for making this awesome control that cuts the development by almost half when designing the UI portion
Would take that as a feature request and put it into my tast list for the next few releases
once again thanks for not only using the app, but providing feedback for it too. There is no point in people just using app without telling us, the developers, what they really want to see. Its after all you the users who end up using it on a daily basis. So thank you!
on a side note, got a nice email from microsoft this morning
Hi
Just wonder - would you consider making this reads the other Singapore e-news intead of just ST? While it's nice to have one app for one news site, I really don't like the idea of filling my screen with few icons for different newspaper.
Just a thought. Of cos', it would have to be a different names then. Ha..
But this programme so far running very smoothly and scrolling is good too. Well done!
hmm, it would increase the complexity of the app, introducing the possibilities of having more bugs. I would avoid that.
moreover i have done up the CNA app as well as the backend of Today app as well... just a matter of time before they become general release items as well

It seems very cool...but I would like to have this for other newspaper...
the straits time with Windows Phone 7 theme. Nice touch
Definitely gonna try this out. Great development.
looks great! will try it out now

This is great, though wishing there are others like CNA or Newpaper
Also I'm getting this error on my HD2 once in a while after I quit or while using the app (can't take a screenshot for some odd reason)...but other than that, it's working fine. And I notice a 2 second lag when I scroll it way way up or down (till the icons are gone) before they appear again but meh, I could still live with it
Code:

System.Windows.Forms.Control.InvokeHelper(Delegate method, Boolean fSynchronous, Object[] rgobjArgs)

There are many, many (and more to come) new featurs in 7.5 and I love them all!
But I miss something in WP 7.5 (7.10.7712.60):
(red marked)
1.
Was nice when listening to long audiofiles. (also on lockscreen)
WP7___________________________________________________WP7.5
2.
The "search website" features is missing
3.
Please MS, let us change the reload icon/button to the tabs or favorites icon/button!
4.
The Imagequality when uploading from picture hub to Facebook is horrible now!
5.
The colors have been renamed. i.a. limettengrün to lindgrün.
Some (all?) of them (I noticed it on limettengrün/limegreen) are less colorful
Do U miss more features from WP7.5 that was in 7?
6.
Several Members: Transparent lockscreen wallpapers gone (IMO this isn't a cut feature, some of us just used a glitch...)

I think the new placement of url etc is awesome.
What is it that is bad?
I don't think there'll be one single update,wp7 is too big a mess to solve in one swoop. Next year April probably we'll be smiling from ear to ear and sideloading apps we haven't even thought of. Until then its slim pickings, should have waited for the bloody Nokia.

I'm wondering if the transparent wallpaper "feature" was actually a bug that we just took advantage off. I noticed that the squares in various hubs, such as office and picture, no longer go transparent when I move from page to page like they did before mango.
Yeah I'm pretty sure wasn't a feature, it was more of a hack

Yeah man, they had to do something with Zune on the lockscreen, and it made it a huge mess. It's too bad, I did it to my friends focus and it looked beautiful. And I don't own a WP7 currently, so I will never get to enjoy it.
Maybe if we get a poll going, we could bring this to Microsoft's attention?

well i miss the favs button and the tabs button being on the screen, instead of having to use the menu, i honestly didnt mind the URL bar at the top, but whatever, I cant wait for the official Mango update to come out
Editing (saving) old Word files (97-03) ... doesn't work anymore. -.-
I have to agree about the browser. It's not a make or break problem for me, but is kind of annoying to have that extra step. I also wish they'd give IE a Forward/Back Button instead of using the hardware Back button. Would be nice for the URL to be on top & auto-hide, swipe down to show it in portrait & landscape. Make it thicker since it'd auto hide. Just my 2 cents on it.
Also, don't like them (MS) breaking homebrew native app (INTEROPSERVICES). That is a big deal for me. That's the main reason I'm not using the Beta2. The new features are nice, but the lack of homebrew kills it for me.

It looks nice, but is too busy for my taste.
Don't like the sense-esque weather or how busy it is as it'd muck up the UI but I like the concept, just too busy for metro.
Yup, a lot of these concepts don't take into account the amount of work the WP7 design team has put in to making the Metro UI uncluttered, simple and yet so stylish..
too busy and would look very out of place with the clean styling of the Metro UI
Looks like Android to me...
I love it - looks great and functional too.
Yes Metro UI is uncluttered, but unfortunately that means lists of white text on a black background...again and again. It's easy to use but boring to look at - reminds me of an old DOS terminal!

Did you seriously just copy "Notification Center" from iOS 5 right down to the name?
In any case, it looks good. But I'm not sure Microsoft wants to go the down-swipe route. Maybe swipe right to a pane to the left of the start screen?
Or even an extra button on the start screen to go to a Notification Hub. The App list has Search, the Home Screen can have the notification button with a number inside the bubble. I think taht would be elegant and the most unintrusive way to add it in.
In the Hub you can have Notifications and Reminders, however if you have to go to the Notification Hub to get reminders you're already somewhat failed there The OS supports Tasks and To-Dos with half-screen notifications/reminders. There's no need for that pane, IMO.
I am sort of pissed that Microsoft didn't make toasts a rolling 3D box like Apple did in iOS, though... They really need to add a bit more 3D to the OS. It's way way too flat IMO. Almost painstakingly so.
Your Skype thing bought an issue to mind. Why doesn't the message hub in Mango have a graphic or text to tell you your online status? After all, the phone does not log you on automatically when you [re]boot it up.
The music playback controls there are thoroughly unnecessary since they're easily accessible by just pressing a volume key. Waste of space.
I actually think the bubble (Notifications for Start, Search for App list in same spot) would be a better solution than a gesture. Some apps take over that top area and I'm not sure how the phone will handle it when you have UI elements up there that need to be tapped or dragged.
Looks like Android not Windows Phone!
Way to busy, Metro is an elegant yet minimalist UI. This concept looks like a breed between Android and Windows Mobile. With Nokia now contributing to the actual OS I believe the 3rd page concept found on Meego will/should make the jump (minus twitter and facebook since they're already in the People hub).

very wrong imo. A swipe down where? Lock screen? That's not very convenient, home screen? We swipe up and down to navigate the menu. The most viable option is a third table.

Agreed, I read some where that the dev of this app has actually been trying to get Ziggy to do more but you know MS and their damned restricted API's. I'n my opinion they need to hire this guy.
The screenshots look cool. I may dl it again.
I tried it before, and 90% of the time the response was just "would you like to do a websearch for that" or whatever it says.
I could save myself time and a couple steps by just voice-searching Bing.

I know I hardly use it my self, I'll use it from time to time to entertain my self for a few laughs but it's great to see it evolve. You have to give it to the dev of the app; he has to improve it even with the MS restrictions.
I really don't like it when developers use a panorama design and put "Settings" as a screen to swipe to. They really should put the settings in the app bar. If he only wants the microphone icon in the app bar then add the settings to the "more" 2 dots part.
Otherwise I'm looking forward to this update!

Then he should look closely at how MS design their panorama apps. Settings are always in the app bar in People hub, messaging, xbox live hub, calender etc
Generally when a user swipes along a panoramic screen its to see more content. Settings isn't more content. Most users don't even fiddle with it each time they launch the app unless they need to change something, so therefore dedicating an entire panoramic screen to it is bad design and not metro.
That is my opinion

+1
It's the case with so many major app developers. It's the mindset from other OSes. That brings us to badly developed apps argument. There is always an app for what we need, if not official, a client - majority of the times. But most apps are so horribly metrofied that it's mortifying. Making apps esp free ones, is an amazing task! But then full hearted approach to match the metro concept will streamline an user's experience and they will love your app more. Else someone too choosy about how his phone looks might find distasteful breaks in his streamline experience. Most WP users gotta be choosy with UI, why else would you love this new UI so much!?
May be people here won't agree, but this is what I generally consider as a factor whether any particular app will stay on my WP. In my WM and Android days, that wasn't an issue because OS UI was ugly anyway. But can't let the UI experience be ruined just because I want some functionality of an app that I might only use once a week or once a month!
Oh this looks so much better. I'm not a big fan of how it looks right now.
I do agree with previous comments about settings. A whole screen to swipe to is uneccessary. Put it in the bar.
I can agree Ziggy looks dirty. I hope developer ask some designers to help him make ui better.
Function over finesse. It's more important to get the core working well, than to tweak the look and feel.
For the most part the real use is a 1 button deal. Make it listen. Make it stop and process.
The app without a function update was only a cool concept, but not much worked properly. Since it is a 1 person team, I am glad the focus is on getting it to function properly.
Once the guts are working properly, it can be delivered. Then, we will have a great functional app while the user interface tweaks are done. Then we will have a superb app.
Hello! I'm a designer who loves Metro. I'm tired of seeing the lackluster Metro app design currently plaguing the Windows Store. While there are some fantastic designs, many apps are just boring or don't fit in well with the Metro design language.
I'm here to help. I'm offering my design skills at no cost, all I ask for is one line of credit in the app's About page.
This is my first design. It's a complete GUI for Instapaper. It's very clean, modern, and most certainly Metro. It's extremely simplistic, but still has everything you could want from an Instapaper app. This app rivals even the official Android and iOS Instapaper apps. The design is based around the Bing News app and the People app. If you're interested in developing this app, I feel you could charge at least $3 in the Store, and make a good profit, which I would want no part of.
Below are some images. I have PSDs of every interface from the log in to creating a new folder. If you're seriously interested in developing this app, either send me a message or post below.

Aaaagh... don't quote huge OPs like that, please! Just hit Quick Reply and don't use the "Quote message in reply?" option. It just makes the page really long and makes it hard to find the breaks between posts...
To the OP: looks very nice. I hope you find a dev to work with. A few things to keep in mind:
1) Different resolutions, and scaling between them. What looks great on the Surface's 1366x768 will look pretty bad on my desktop's 2560x1440.
2) Different aspect ratios. Tablets in particular are sometimes used in portrait aspect ratio. It would be great to have a good UI for using the app like that too; not enough Store apps handle that well.
3) Snapping the app to one side or the other. This makes it much thinner and also removes the ability to open the App Bar (right-click or swipe in from top/bottom) and Charms bar for that app, so if it's going to be useful in the snapped view it should offer the most critical controls directly to the user in this interface. Skype, Xbox Music, and even Mail do decent jobs of this, although they aren't necessarily pretty.

Aaaagh... don't quote huge OPs like that, please!

I do have designs for every view/position (I haven't done anything about scalability, but I have ideas on how to work with that). I only posted the two main views in dark/light varients to make sure people could get a good solid understand of how it will work and function. I have PSD's for almost everything that's needed. I've found someone who says they'd like to work on it.
Its looks very nice... and clean...:thumbup::thumbup:
You should undertake overhauling a well known open source windows software. Most of them dont have a metro counterpart. Just pick anything, i can see you have a pretty functional design understanding.
