[Q] Big issues with my Desire Z - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Today I got my Desire Z back from the repair. I immediately downgraded it to 1.34 and I rooted it. After that, I put on CM7. Which worked great. Then I added Godspeeds kernel to overclock it. It hung on the launch screen. I managed to get it out after that. Then I decided to go back to the normal firmware instead of CM7. What happened was that I installed the T-Mobile G2 firmware instead of the normal Desire Z with HTC Sense
Now I am really stuck and my plane is leaving tonight... :'(
Can anyone help me please?
PS: When I try to enter recovery mode, it vibrates and shows a phone with a red triangle and an exclamation mark... :S I can get in the bootloader but not in recovery mode...

I thought installing firmware should not mess up recovery... did something happen in between? Can you get any adb connection in any point? I wish I could be more helpful...

Well nothing really happened in between. The bootloader still says S-Off on top and I can still get an adb connection in. I'm just stuck with the wrong firmware and can't get out of it.

Try this when at the screen with the red triangle press power and vol up till u see blue words say install update, recovery, reset etc and slect recovery that should take u to cwm

I was able to get those blue letters but what should I do in the recovery menu then?

I was able to get those blue letters but what should I do in the recovery menu then? I tried applying the update.zip of CM7 but that gave an error.

cyanogen's kernel has built-in overclocking out of the box, so unless you have a good reason for changing it, there's no sense in doing so. (just so you don't make that mistake again: godspeed kernel is not compatible with CM7)
if, while in recovery, you selected "apply update.zip from sdcard", it's not going to work (unless you named the CM zip you downloaded "update.zip" and placed it on the root of your sdcard). you need to select "install zip from sdcard" and then navigate to wherever your CM rom zip is.
also, so long as you have radio s-off and are rooted, you can flash whatever you want onto your phone and be able to change it later. if you flashed the PC10IMG of a t-mobile rom (as long as it wasn't the gingerbread leak), you're fine.
also also... MAKE A BACKUP. you will never encounter this type of stuff again after creating a stable backup to turn to in the event that something goes haywire. you do this from within CWM recovery as well.

Yeah I now managed to get it back at CM7. All that's left to do is to get back to an overclocked sense ui. I prefer sense over CM7 I found out. So how should I get back?
I also can't sync with HTC Sync atm -.-

Considered u have CM7 running then just install ROM Mgr, reflash CWM and flash whatever ROM u want

Oke and what rom should I take? Since I prefer the standard sense ui.

there are lots of sense roms in the dev section. I think the ones receiving the most praise at the moment (sense users can correct me if I'm wrong here) are virtuous unity, insertcoin and coredroid.

Godspeed is for Sense ROMs only. When flashing kernels, you need to make sure its a Sense or non-Sense kernel, and also Froyo or Gingerbread kernel, depending on the ROM you are on.

[Q] I'm an idiot! Desire bricked.

I've bricked my desire, after I installed uvoc 2.6.32 for Sense Roms everything was ok. THEN I want to instal some mod that changes the battery indicator to some circle with % show inside. My desire started to loop after "quietly brilliant" In attack
of panic I've formatted system and boot. now I can onl get in recovery mode. My m8 is going to give it to my operator's for warranty sayin something like "I don't know what happened i get it off the charger and it was like this"
Or maybe any chance to repair at home ?
Sorry for my bad english.
Do you have a custom recovery installed? If so just install another rom!
If not just run an RUU and return it to stock and start again.
I don't think you need to return it to HTC until you have tried a few things.
I am pretty sure this could be fixed yourself!!

Hmm okay I will try something in the evening, when I get back from work.
Now more questions
1. is it possible to get to sd card from windows when in recovery or I have to buy a card reader.
2. RUU ?? sorry I'm android noob

1. Do you have a custom recovery installed (Amon-Ra or Clockworkmod)? If so, it is possible to access the SD card over USB from Windows. The option will be "Mount USB Storage" or something similar. If you have a custom recovery I think you *should* just be able to flash a rom from there!
2. An RUU is a software update from HTC (found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695667). Where did you get your Desire? Was it unbranded or did you get it from a network (O2, Vodafone etc)? Also what HBOOT do you have? To find this, power off your device, press (and hold) BACK and press power. It should say HBOOT at the top and have a number beside.
Also, I don't suppose you have an old Nandroid backup or anything?
Stu
same thing happenend to me once, first off all, dont panic
what the guy above me says, do that, plug it in via usb and you'll be able to mount it, then just throw a new rom on there: MIUI, LEEDROID, OPENDESIRE.
whatever you want.
install that zip via the recovery menu and lead a long and happy life

The phone was bought from a network "play" (poland) it was sim free from stock and no sighn of any branding on it.
I will be able to check the hboot version today evening.
I have an "Mount USB Storage" option in recovery. clockworld.zip is on sd too.
I will try to get to sd and install a stock rom (i tried to reinstal the kernal ive dowloaded from xda) but nothhing happens.
It doesnt even try to boot when I press the power key (without the volume down arrow) it acts like I would use the power + v. down)
before I use format boot and format system it was looped as I said before.
First, download this RUU file:
http://shipped-roms.com/download.ph...00.32U_5.09.05.30_2_release_142828_signed.exe
Then, turn your phone on whilst holding the back button and you should get into FASTBOOT. Connect your phone to your PC and then run that RUU. If it works it will reset the phone back to stock

If you can get into Clockwork mod then you can put any ROM you like (Defrost, Cyanogen, MIUI etc) on the SD card and flash that and you should have a fully working device.
Or you can do what Eddy posted above and get back to complete stock (like it was when you bought it)!

I will try that, currently if i choose "fastboot" when turn it on, it just blinks and get me to the same place I was a second before.
Stay tuned for more question in about 4,5h form now :]
It will look the same BUT it'll say FASTBOOT instead of HBOOT at the top...

Desire stuck, no recovery, no boot

Hi
I have got a problem since this morning and I really need some help. Everything was always working fine, I have a rooted HTC desire, running GingerVillain 1.3.
Yesterday I did an update to GingerVillain 1.4 through gingervillain updater.
The update was ok.This morning I take my phone, and try to reboot it.
And now, it is stuck in a bootloop on the green HTC logo.
I can access to hboot (0.80), but when I try to access to recovery to flash another ROM, I have got the green htc logo, then a black screen.
On this black screen, if I use the power button to wak up the screen, then I can see just one line saying : clockworkmod recovery v2.5.1.0. But I can't see any menu on the recovery.
So I can't boot my desire, I can't flash something else, I am kinda stuck...
I tried removing my SD card, and it is the same thing.
Thanks in advance for your help...
Did you check the feedback about GibgerVillain's update?
Yes I did. It seems that I am the only one with this kind of problem.

That means you did something wrong. Maybe the copy of the download was foul. Do you have S-ON or S-OFF?
Well, I don't know what I could have done wrong, but I have found a solution.
I went into fastboot, plug in to my PC, then launch a flash with an original ROM (RUU).
After that, a little Unrevoked to get root access and install a recovery, and i started again from draft.
Anyway, thanks for your help.
I'm glad you figured it out.

[Q] Bricked if I cannot reach recovery?

Sounds like there weren't any ideas in Q&A for this one, and I haven't seen much in terms of not being able to access recovery, so here goes...
I was happily using CM7, and while reading through a Diablo III news page (hopefully it comes out soon ), my phone rebooted into a boot loop. Weird, but I figured at worst I would wipe data and reinstall a ROM. Unfortunately, I can't get into recovery any longer.
If I boot the phone normally, I see the white HTC splash screen for a few seconds, then it reboots. I can use HBOOT fine, but as soon as I try to reboot normally / boot into recovery / boot into Restore Factory Defaults, my phone will reset. Let me clarify...
Pull and replace battery
Boot into HBOOT (volume down + power)
Select Recovery
Phone reboots and reaches CWM Recovery 3 for about 1/2 second, not long enough for me to click anything
Phone reboots into boot loop
I've used HBOOT to flash to CWM Recovery 3.0.0.8, downgraded to the stock radio, run the 2.2 RUU. I'm still running up against the same boot loop problem.
I wouldn't be surprised if it was a hardware problem, but I'm anxious to hear if anyone has ideas to try first. Additionally, is there any way to restore to S-ON through HBOOT in case I need to bring this into a Verizon store? I have fastboot.exe that can recognize the device over USB while the device is in HBOOT, maybe this will help?
Thanks!
Current state: Ran 2.2 RUU, S-OFF, HBOOT-0.92.0000, AMOLED, 2.15.00.07.28 radio
Thanks again.
Had this exact issue while running cm7. First couple of from when it was crackflashers. I couldn't find anything to help or fix it. I got a new dinc because I can't afford to be without for long.
Good luck dude.

Thanks for the note. Maybe my fate will be the same. Did you get any sympathy from Verizon?
Doesn't sound like there are even any suggestions using fastboot, lol. [crickets chirping]
Can you flash cwm 2.5.x and try? Not sure if it will help but worth a shot?

Yeah take out battery, then pull out sd card put it into a adapter and insert it to ur pc. Then find the file that was shipped specifically for ur device it looks something like this PC130mg.zip or some crap like that anyways put that on the root of your sd card. load ur card back to your phone now into hboot(volume down plus power) mode. Your phone will auto detect that file and start to ask if u want to install update say yes boom it will flash back to stock.....however my only concern would be if u need to turn s-ON before u do this.
I did this for a evo 4g and it worked but I turned s-ON first as it was in the instructions I was following. I think maybe the update file checks to see if ur S-off or on. But don't quote me on that.

Yeah, I agree with popasmurf. Put the PB31IMG.zip on your sdcard. Then let hboot discover and update it. It'll be back to stock and youll have to reroot but better than a paperweight.

@phazeone let's say he just does that. Now his phone reboots and is on stock and looses his root, now he can root it again and then turn the S-on by the single file flash from recovery mode, and then use the update file again to flash the phone back to normal stock without root ( if he was taking it back) so whenever u want to manipulate the S security u must be rooted correct?

Thanks for the replies.
I tried this method to flash back to the stock 2.2 image before I started this thread. That's what I meant by "I've used HBOOT to ... run the 2.2 RUU." The stock image seemed to install properly in HBOOT. I have evidence that it successfully went back to stock, since I get the original ! triangle graphic instead of CWM when I try to enter recovery from HBOOT. However, I only see the graphic pop up for a brief second before it reboots again. Trying to boot into recovery or the ROM itself still result in a reboot.
I cannot achieve S-ON without having access to recovery, at least there's no way that I've found to do it through HBOOT.
Any other thoughts? I think it's a hardware problem. It appears the phone is back to stock (except it's still S-OFF), but everything outside of HBOOT causes a boot loop. I stopped in at Verizon this afternoon and they'll be sending a new phone to arrive by Tuesday. At this point, it'd be nice to try all avenues of repair for the future benefit of others that run into this problem.
Probably bad memory chips on the phone. Since it happened all of a sudden during normal use it usually indicates hardware failure.
That is pretty much what I determined. Bad hardware. Sorry for your trouble but is nice to know I'm not the only person to ever have this. Also nice to know I didn't miss something that could've brought it back to life.
I filed an insurance claim. Figured since I have had it for years and never used it I'd take advantage.

You can boot your phone like regular right? Just let it launch up or do you get loops?
Nevermind i see what ur saying. when i was flashing incorrect kernals i would get the same behavior from my phone. So i suggest you take phazeones link and try that file.Because u might have the incorrect file. There might be more than meets the eye make sure u got the right file.
When i searched for my zip file for my evo there was like 4 of them. They had to match what was said in the upper left corner of my hboot screen. So let me knoe if it worked
I wonder if he could just wipe that SD card, place a new Rom etc on it and reinstall. Bricking displays no response you've got a better shot at recovering course your SD card/battery could be bad
Since you're trying to flash the 3.x.x.x version of CWM, that may be your issue. Here's a zip for 2.5.0.5, one of the most stable earlier Recoveries. Flash through hboot as per usual.
If that doesn't work, (I'm assuming that you can boot the phone normally at this point) try re-rooting with the Unrevoked tool.
Then use Rom Manager to flash a newer Recovery (be sure to check Erase Previous Recovery under Settings). If that still doesn't work, I'll see about packaging an RUU in a PB31IMG.zip with a valid version of CWM as the recovery.img within that zip. I'm not sure about the practicality of this final option, but if it comes down to it, I'll attempt to package that up for you.
This sounds incredibly frustrating. Thus my interest in the matter.
There's gotta be a way to fix this... even if it's just long enough to get S-On and keep your warranty valid.

This would work if he could access CWM Recovery, but he can't, thus the issue.
I wonder if he could mount something from within hboot and replace the binary code for the recovery image with a bunch of zeroes and then try flashing another through hboot again.
Sent via my Incredible CM7 Gingerbread sorcery.
I was JUST about to post the same topic when I came across this. I have done the stock image restore, restored BACK to hboot 0.92, back to the most current INC radio, and have tried flashing CW3.0 and Amon_RA. Everything flashes fine but the boot loop continues and if I try to enter recovery, it lasts maybe one full second before rebooting again. The only thing that I can think of that would create this situation for me was that earlier I was trying to update the PRL via *228 on MIUI but the dialpad never popped up so I hung up.

It just seems unlikely that this is a problem with flashing the wrong recovery, or the wrong stock image, since booting into recovery and booting normally both exhibit the same behavior. If I could boot normally into recovery but not boot into a stock image, I would suspect that I had flashed the wrong image. Since both have the same problem, I think it might be something else.

Same behavior. White htc Incredible splash screen -> darkness for a second (presumably while the ROM tries to boot) -> reboot.
Alternatively, HBOOT -> Recovery -> White htc Incredible screen -> Triangle / ! error screen for a half second -> reboot.
[finished flashing CWM 2.5.0.5]
Same behavior:
HBOOT -> Recovery -> White htc Incredible screen -> CWM recovery 2.5.0.5 for a half second (this confirms that it flashed properly) -> reboot.

Nope, I downloaded two recovery images. One for SLCD sreen and one for the other screen. I looked, and apparently flashed the wrong one. I get just a black screen.
So, you can't get to recovery, not even Hboot? If Hboot is black, I don't know if there is much you can do...

If I cant get HBoot to open..or anything for that matter, will verizon be able too? I took it to the store, told the guy very simply "the screen wont show up and nothing happens besides the single vibrate (as usual) on start-up). They hooked it to something...had the phone for about 20 minutes. Then came back and told me they ordered another one...
Edit: Once the recovery image flashed, Hboot came back up initially. S-ON was displayed. S-ON was the one thing I am glad happened.! lol
LOL, I hear you, I had a similar issue with my PSP a few years back. was getting random memory errors, and crash to reboot. I had enough sense to flash it back to stock fw, before bringing it back in. it crashed around 78% thru the stock fw flash. So that was kinda a godsend, since the only data they will be able to get off of it if they try, is stock.
Well your issue was the image you flashed. You went to unroot and flash a stock 2.1 ROM. Although this sounds correct, there is a problem. The stock 2.1 ROM was made for the release DInc's, and those, my friend, come AMOLED. So by flashing that stock 2.1 ROM, it does not contain the correct hardware drivers to support the newer batch of DInc, the SLCD.
What you could have done was:
Download the correct ROM that supports the SLCD from here (which can be found on http://dougpiston.com
Place that file in the root of your sdcard.
Now since your phone's display doesnt work, like you said it vibrates once, like normal, your phone still functions properly.
Boot your phone into HBOOT and allow it a few minutes, like normal to find this PB31IMG.zip file. It then will prompt you to press UP to confirm the update or press DOWN to not update. (you will not see this, but if you have flashed a radio then you know this process)
when you press up, it will then start updating to the stock ROM. however, you wont see any of this. just a black screen.
allow that to run, usually for 10 minutes. to be safe wait 15-18 minutes and then press UP. When the update is complete you are asked to reboot. UP for yes DOWN for no. again you will not see this. Then when it reboots....you will be happy and see the HTC Incredible white screen
It got me too, same thing you did. Just dug around and figured it out.

[Q] HTC Desire HD problem, Phone won't start.

Hi!
I'm gonna go straight to my problem.
I have a HUGE problem with my HTC Desire HD.
A few days ago I was gonna update my phone from Androind Revolution HD 7.0.2 to ARHD 7.0.3.
In this process I accidently erased my whole SD card. I put the SD card into one of those
USB things where you put the small SD-card into and then into the computer. Anyway, I accidently marked
everything and deleted it, So now my phone won't even start. It just stops at the white screen and it says HTC.
You know the startup screen that comes up when you start the phone. And then nothing happens.
I am tired of custom ROMs etc etc, and I would like to revert my phone back to factory settings.
Only problem is I don't know which RUU to use etc etc. I have tried the Hold Volume DOWN button and power button
and then chose restore factory defaults.. But it doesn't work. Please help me what should I do?
I want to revert it to stock as it was when I got it from the store..
I live in Sweden, If that's any help.
Please help, I can't even use my phone anymore...
What you need to do is download a ROM and place it on your sd card. Then turn on your phone while holding the volume down button. You should enter the boot loader menu, choose recovery. From recovery you can flash the ROM you placed on your sd card.
I'm not sure but I think if you want to go to stock you can just use a stock ROM file instead of a custom one, but i recommend sticking with a good custom ROM.
Heres a list of stock RUUs

Thanks mate!
Only question now is, which one should I use?
I live in Sweden if that's any help as I wrote in my post.

What version should I chose then? What about gingerbread? ace? I have no idea how these things work, Right now I'm gonna try
RUU_Ace_HTC_WWE_1.72.405.3_R_Radio_12.28e.60.140f_26.04.02.17_M2_release_161342_signed.exe
Would that be the proper one maybe?
Also this didn't work, I put the .exe file which I downloaded, on the SD card, and I chose recovery but then a black scree
came up with the cellphone on it and a red triangle with a exclamation mark..
Should I maybe rename the file to something? Or pack it in a zip file and rename it to update.zip or something like that?
Thanks.

You don't need to use a RUU ROM. If you had ARHD installed before and like that, then use that, or anything else on the forums. You just need the install .zip on the SD card, the recovery files are already on your phone. Power the phone on while holding the volume down button to boot into bootloader, then choose recovery and install the .zip
That's the problem I chose recovery and as I wrote before, a black screen comes up with the phone on it and a triangle with a exclamation point..
Or are you saying I should zip the RUU ROM? And rename it to update.zip and then chose recovery or something like that?
I have read a little myself, and the red triangle thingy, I found a solution to that. Press Volume Up and Power Button, So I did and I chose Install update.zip from sd card.
Only problem now is that the installation aborts itself and it says "Signature verification failed" or something like that. What do I do now?
Please help, I don't know what to do

It seems like you have overwritten your recovery.
You can try installing clockworkmod by following this guide
http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/how-to-install-a-custom-recovery-to-an-android-phone-device/
Try the fastboot or flash_image methods.
Once recovery is installed boot in recovery by holding vol down and press the power button, then choose recovery, and then install a ROM that you have downloaded and placed on your sd card
Edit: I highly recommend using a custom ROM and the method i wrote above but if you insist on installing a stock ROM you can use one of the RUUs from the link I posted earlier, the one you mentioned earlier should be fine. The RUU is an exe file that you run from your pc. Just connect your phone and run the RUU and follow the steps, you might have to boot into the bootloader on your phone though. It won't work if you just zip it.
Another method for installing a ROM without recovery is to get a ROM which is in the PD98IMG.zip format. If you have a ROM in this format just place the zip on the root of your sd card, boot into the boot loader and it should start installing automatically, but again you should try the recovery method first.
Thanks for this post man.
Only problem is I can't access the cellphones interface to turn USB debugging on or off, which was on when the cellphone stopped working.
And what do you mean by "Another method for installing a ROM without recovery is to get a ROM which is in the PD98IMG.zip format."
Should I just rename the ARHD 6.3.2 to PD98IMG.zip and then run it? Cause I did that and nothing happens as usual.
The only thing I can access in the phone is the boot menu..
And it seems to install clockwork mod you have to have access to the interface of the phone, meaning the phone must work sort of.. Mine doesn't It doesn't even start so that I can typ in the pin code etc etc... Nothing...
I even tried to boot the phone into boot menu and then chose Fastboot and plug it in via USB and then try to install the RUU .exe file.. Which did not work either..
I have no idea what to do..
I can however access androids own "boot menu" sort of, cause when I come into the boot menu I chose reovery, then after about 20-30 sec the black background comes up with the phone on it and a red triangle with a an exclamation mark and if I press volume up and power button it brings up a menu which I can chose "install update.zip from SD card" Only problem is, it doesn't seem to work no matter which ARHD.zip file i chose...
I am clueless on what to do. Any other suggestions?
Also the PC can't seem to find the phone when I plug it into the USB because as I said when I ran that RUU .exe file while it was plugged in, it told me it couldn't find the phone so..
help..
http://www.androidrevolution.nl/downloader/download.php?file=PD98IMG.zip
Use that PD98IMG.zip !
What you should end up with is a stock Froyo DHD which you can that root, custom recovery and so on !
Download the PD98IMG.zip from Aron Fridrik's post above, place it on the root of your sd card. Boot into the bootloader by pressing vol down and the power button when the phone is off, and the ROM will start installing automatically (I think).
Then follow this guide to root and install a later ROM.
Advanced Ace Hack Kit
Ok thanks a lot!
Will try this and get back to you.
But what's the difference on Froyo, ACE etc etc? I've never really understood that.
Thanks again! Will get back to you !
Froyo is Android 2.2, ace is the codename of Desire Hd and Wwe mean world wide edition

WOW! It's working now!
Thank you all so much for the help you've given me!
I did what you said, copied PD98IMG.zip to the SD card,
booted into bootloader, it started updating the zip file and when it was
done the phone was back to stock. I then used the Advanced Ace Hack Kit
and rooted the phone, once that was done I downloaded ARHD 7.0.3 and booted into clockworkmod and applied the update.zip which I renamed earlier on the SD card.
And now I am running ARHD 7.0.3 and it's working great! I'm going to save that PD98IMG.zip file for the future in case something goes wrong again!
Now there's just one small problem, When I started Youtube on the phone I got the "force close" message, so my first thought was to uninstall it and install it again and that worked. Now I get the same message (force close message = "The application Sound set (process com.htc.sdm) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.) when I press Personalize > Sound > Notification Sound. It doesn't do that if I chose Ringtone or Alarm or any other. Only the Notification sound..
Any ideas what this might be?
I had the same problem when I used ARHD 7.0.2 and I though it was something with the ARHD ROM and that it might had been fixed in 7.0.3 but no.
So any ideas, or should I just check the post about ARHD 7.0.3 and see the FAQ there?
Anyway, thank you all again for the help!
I really appreciate it!

Did you full wipe and factory data reset prior to flashing new rom?
Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk 2 Beta-4
Actually no I didn't. After the "root process" I just installed the update.zip through clockworkmod. Should I have done a full wipe and factory data reset before this?

you don't need to rename the from zip to update.zip to install a rom through recovery.
You should do a full wipe and reinstall ARHD, if the problem still persists try posting in the ARHD thread.
Don't forget to move the PD98IMG.zip from the root of your SD card or it will install every time you enter the bootloader.
Allright mate, Thanks a lot!
EDIT: I did what you said Lewelynn and now it works! Thanks a lot! Now it even looks different! =)
It's the small weather clock instead of the big one and a different look on the buttons etc etc.
How come it looks different now than before when I applied the ARHD 7.0.3? Is it because I did a data wipe/factory reset through 4ext?
Also when you do a data wipe/factory reset through 4ext, during that process it asks you if you want to install something about kernel or something else?
Can't really remember what it said.. But what did that mean? I chose No on the first question, and then Yes on the other question which said (recommended) so ofc I chose that.
Is this the reason it looks different now or ?
Thanks again!
You cannot imagine how greatful I am for your help!
Thank you everyone!

I'm not sure why it looks different, maybe stuff was corrupted before since you didn't wipe, or maybe you unknowingly updated from sense 3.0 to sense 3.5 when you updated ARHD.
I don't use the 4ext wipe feature so don't know what those options are. If you are concerned, an alternate way of wiping is to use the superwipe.zip which you will find on the first post in the ARHD thread. Just install the zip before you install a new rom if you want to wipe.
No problem man we all started somewhere.
Alright mate,
Well then that's it, now everything is fixed. Moderator can remove the post or whatever Or he could let it be if someone else has the same problem.
Again! Thanks for everyone's help in this post! =)
