[Q] Just got a Refurb Evo, got a couple questions. - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just got two question..
1. I read somewhere you can find out the talk time on a used phone to see how long it was used before it was sent in for repair. Does anyone know where this information is??
2. I have rooted twice before now, but the refurb has software version 4.22.651.2, android 2.3.3, PRI 2.15_003 would I be able to root? I've been reading posts and ppl seem to be waiting on the ablitity to root with this new software version. Im just a lil confused.
Thanks in advance.

For your second question, it can't be rooted yet. I'm sure they are working on one though, let's hope so

Not sure if sprint wipes this data on the refurb though

No.

Check in hboot to see if its s-off, then you just flash recovery and a rooted rom. I got a refurbished one last week with 2.3 on it, but it was s-off...maybe you're lucky
We're comin from a pure power source.

@pandamaja & @sitlet thanks. The phone seems pretty new with only 80 life calls, 109 minutes on the life timer, and activated June 2 2011. I wonder what was wrong with it.
@metalfan78 I tried booting into bootloader and it was a no go. Im guessing they locked it with the update. Guess im S.O.L as far as rooting is concerned for now. Its not too bad though the stock evo starts up like a monster. It comes on in like 5 seconds compared to the 1-3 minutes on the older version i had. I was shocked at first.

You need to go into settings, then applications(I think) and unchecked fastboot then you can power down and power up while holding volume down
We're comin from a pure power source.

Just pull the battery and go into it that way. No need to disable fastboot.

Ok got it. Unfortunately its S-On.

That sucks, hopefully a root method comes soon

Honestly, I've dealt with many refurb evo's. The ones with low calls, like yours, always seemed to be the worst. That means that the person who had it, found a problem with it very quickly, as they didn't really have time to use it.

[Q] Un-Brick tools?

Hi Guys -
unfortunately the incredible got bricked today after unroot. I unrooted, then allowed the official update to run, then tried a radio update and it went south - no charging light, wont turn on, wont fo in to HBOOT - notta. I am guessing that this is now my newest and most expensive paper weight but before I shot the patient I thought I would ask if there is a way to un-brick that did not come up while searching google or the forums. I know that I am 99% SOL.
Nope...not that I know of.

Assuming you were already on the 2.05 or 2.15 radio and ran the 2.05 radio update, you are indeed truly bricked. I don't believe anyone has found a way to recover from this.
VZW was nuts to try to save a little data by packaging a radio patch rather than a full radio update, but you get what you get when you deal with a leak.
^ was afraid of that, I was actually on the 1.xxxxx radio, oh well that is what I get for testing things out.

Hmm... well then it's not the well know problem of applying the 2.05 radio patch to the wrong version radio. Not sure what went wrong.
yeah me either, I really dont gave no warning before it just shut off. When the screen went blank I was thinking....please let be a reboot.....not that lucky, she never came back :-/

Call vzn and told them your phone wont turn on and you will get a replacement phone the next day.
slight problem - I had my blackberry hooked up and was going to swap after the update so I dont think they will be able to do anything....
similar problem
i had a similar problem. I'll tell you this. if its under manufacture warranty send it in. i did. they have to put a whole new board but its going to be free. If they have to replace the whole board i think it should be clear how we are never going to see a fix we can do anytime, or ever for that matter.
I was messing around with roms the other day and had the same issue. Did a battery pull and life was good again. Hope that works for you.

I tried the battery pull as well and that did not work. Going to call VZW and see if I can get another one.

I know that today Verizon updated the support page for the new 2.2 update. That's a first. When I first saw the rumor I checked no updated page. Nyah! Went and did some other mom things.
Then engadget posted a picture. So I went and checked the support page again. There it was updated for the new 2.2 information. I can't wait to see what new rom's come out of this.

[Q] EVO common probs and whatnot?

Whats going on dudes i been in the heroc forum since launch and finally decided to let her go. I know im a tad bit late but I got my evo over xmas and just had some questions that I thought id ask before I even attempt to root; i have 30 days to return it. I done some searching and came across a few threads of common probs so im gaining some knowledge. What does this so called "light leakage" look like and what should I look for. I also saw something about some peoples phones not holding 4g; how long should It hold 4g before it drops? I did see some users mention hardware version; mine says 0004. Sorry if im asking to much i just dont want to get really settled in and start noticing problems and i have to take it back. So what should i really be looking for to make the call to take this sucker back before 30 days is up. Thanks in advance

I cannot answer any of your 4g questions because I do not have our where I live.
Light leakage issue is because the screen can separate from the body of the phone. Hard to explain what it looks like. Mine had it slightly but does not bother me.
Fyi...if you flash a aosp rom your camera will most likely not work. 4g and hdmi will not work either until cyanogen and teamdouche get it working. Should not be too long at all for 4g on cyanogenmod. A couple weeks or so I would GUESS.
Don't take your evo back. If you have anything else you have a question about feel free to pm me

Well I'm in love with the device already I think I somewhat understand light leakage as my hero might have suffered from this(if its the same thing). I live in Houston tx the 4g seems ok but mine dropped 1 or 2 times but that should be no biggie. Lastly, thanks for the warm welcome and help man.

Hey there and welcome. Definitely stay with the evo. It's off the chain. Make sure you find the proper way to root your hardware version. I've heard it can be a little tricky. After you root I suggest using Myn's Warm Rom. It's based off stock but has several goodies. Sprint hotspot is unlocked, it's fast and snappy. I use Myn with Calkulins new kernel. It gives you awesome battery life. If you need some assistance with anything don't hesitate to PM me. I'm more than willing to help. Hope you stay and enjoy the ride.

That's sounds awesome and exactly what I want to do. My main goal is just to get root access and keep rockin sense; I just want to be able to remove the bloatware really i.e sprint nascar, football etc and unlocking WiFi tether. Unfortunately my phone came with 2.2(651.1) so I can't root just yet I don't think but day #3 with my evo is freaking sweet.
Sent from my new EVO via Tapatalk app.
Mine came with 2.2 as well.that doesn't mean you can't root it.you can root all evo's. Like I said before it's going to matter what hardware you have. It really depends on your hboot version. Power off the phone then while holding down the volume button press and hold the power button till the screen comes on completely. Now at the top you can see your hboot version.search the forum on how to root your version. If you have trouble finding the correct way pm me with your hboot version as well a your hardware version. You can find that in settings under about phone.look for hardware info.then it will be a 4 digit# such as 0003.

It's up to you if you want to go ahead and do it. No one knows how long it will be till unrevoked is working. Which ever way you decide to go with you're going to be very happy with the evo.

[Q] Stock Inc Frequent Rebooting

Hello everyone,
I have just bought a Droid Incredible off of ebay. The seller said it was in mint condition and that there were no problems at all. When it arrived, it was in perfect condition. However, upon activating the phone, it would not stay on for more than 10 minutes. It just keeps rebooting itself. Also, while it is up, it does not always maintain a signal, and then it usually reboots a couple minutes after that.
It is not rooted, all of it is stock. I have been trying to find an answer for this problem all over the internet but to no avail.
I have read that where this phone is from (North Carolina) there was a lot of people with the same problem as this one.
It is the amoled version, hboot .92 and the baseband is the most recent at 2.15.00.7.28
I have tried factory resets, battery pulls, new battery, reflashing the RUU. I am at a complete loss.
Any help would be great, because I want to love this phone. I am sick of my slow Eris and this was my solution.
Thanks so much in advanced.
After some troubleshooting, I have noticed that it only occurs when the 3G service is turned on.
Any thoughts?
Have you tried a different radio?
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
I'm not sure what the problem is. FYI, that's not a bootloop. A bootloop is when the phone continuously boots, but never all the way to be usable, such as to the quietly brilliant screen and then starts again.
Also, I would bring it in to Verizon. See if they'll replace it.

I posted over there too. But actually, I am now starting to rethink that it is the 3G radios. I could've sworn this was a software issue, but it just rebooted on me while I had 3G turned off.
I guess this ebay seller really did lie to me. Well thanks for your help guys, I don't know if I should bother trying to fix this. I guess I should just hope for the seller to respond. Its been almost a week...
Same exact thing is happening to my buddy's phone. I rooted it and put CM7 on it and it was still rebooting.
I had to turn S-ON back on and downgrade back to stock so he can return it to Verizon.

This is exactly what is happening to me right now. It lets me "touch the android to begin," then it reboots. I bought it off ebay and it was an unused cpo. Looks like I'll have to return it. Hey, since I bought it from somebody off ebay, should I worry about turning S-ON and going stock??

You only have to turn S-ON and go stock if you're returning it to Verizon.
http://www.incredibleforum.com/foru...s/5723-how-get-back-complete-stock-s-off.html
That's the guide I used. Works perfectly. Order of operations is:
0) make sure sd card is formatted to FAT32
1) check your radio version
2) downgrade radio if necessary
3) flash s-on
4) install RRU through HBOOT

I can't even successfully root/s-off the phone. It reboots while its being rooted (and not the reboots that are supposed to occur) and it fails.
I have tried everything. I used to be adamant that it was a software issue, but after yesterday, I am beginning to think that it might just be hardware.
Anyone have any experience with getting their money back from ebay/paypal?
But seriously guys, I can't thank you enough for all of your ideas and help. I really appreciate it. Hopefully I can join you guys with the Droid Incredible one day.
PayPal is pretty good about protecting the buyer, as long as it hasn't been too long since the transaction. I would contact the seller and inform him of the problem, then contact PayPal and explain the situation.

I've contacted the seller the day I received it, asking for a refund. I then also contacted the seller two days later. A day after that, still not hearing anything, I opened an eBay case. Now eBay tells me I must wait until the 6th to escalate the case any further.
This is such a hassle, I just want my money back. Part of me wants to just get a HTC Flyer and just tether my Eris to it.

My inc did the same thing. After about ten tries I got it to root (mine too rebooted during the process before it was supposed to). But no rom, kernal, or anything else stopped the reboots. My seller said to return it for a full refund.
Ebay is pretty good at taking care of you. Last year I bought a phone and the seller bailed on me. About a week after I opened a case I had a full refund in my paypal account. Good luck!

Can sprint techs do this...

well i recently received a refubed evo 4g with 2.3. my question is, can the techs at sprint downgrade my evo back to 2.2 or to a lower hboot ?
They may downgrade you to 2.2 if you complain about gingerbread..but if you ask about downgrading the hboot, I think it'll tip them off you're trying to root it / had it rooted before.
ok cool, funny thing is the techs at my sprint store have all there phone rooted LOL
call asurion and tell them the screen and battery is overheating and that you want a brand new evo and not a refurb, they will send it to you no charge.

They may or may not do that, but the new one could have GB on it too. So no point.
Right now they can't do it, unless Sprint/HTC give them a tool to do so. If they were to do so, it'd probably leak here pretty quick. My understanding is that they have the same RUU we do, which was specifically coded not to allow downgrading. That's no accident, by the way...they plugged the old root holes and didn't want to let people downgrade and root.

I know this might not be what your looking for but there's a thread in the EVO Development section for a mod for un-rooted EVO's. Might give you something to tinker around with while you wait for root

I believe they have 30 days from the release, and I thought I saw the official release was like 26 June [or mid June] so they 'technically' still have time.

No, that's how long they are supposed to have to release the kernel source code to comply with GPL.
As far as unlocking bootloaders, HTC said they were changing their policy, but haven't made commitments to how soon it will happen or how whether it'll apply to current devices.
I'm also not totally convinced that the carriers won't try and succeed in vetoing this new policy. Granted, they've allowed the Nexus, but they haven't promoted that device either. Hopefully they will get the message though and not stand in the way.
if a sprint store can downgrade a phone. why can't we do it as easily? I want to know exactly how they do it so we can spread the word. :-D

Sprint tech here, we can not revert phones back to 2.2 our RUU does not allow this. Lol I tried on a buyback yesterday, no dice. You shouldn't have taken the update, sorry.

Seconded. The only way to rollback 2.3 is to remove the chips and force flash them via a programmer. I have done this ONCE just to see if it could be done. To be honest, no customer would ever pay the cost of having it done and even if they would I can't tie up the service center that long for one customer.

[Q] Evo 4G Gingerbread 2.3.3 Root?

Okay, so I ordered my Evo 4G back in June right before Sprint emailed me about the Evo 3D coming in 12 days from that date. When my Evo arrived, I activated it by calling sprint, made a test call, checked the software (2.2.1 I believe), threw the phone in my pocket and drove to soccer practice. When I got back home from practice, my phone had updated to 2.3.3. I suppose autoupdating was on or something and it ran the OTA itself while I was at practice. So now I am trapped with a 2.3.3 Evo with S-ON and I am furious. I am sure that there are others like me with a never rooted Evo dying to get theirs rooted as well. If anyone has any information as to the progress of either a real TEMP ROOT or FULL ROOT then don't hesitate to post it in this thread. I don't want this to be a discussion thread; just a simple "Post What You Know" sort of thing.

The best place for you to get information at this point is following some devs on twitter: alpharevx,Agraben,Unrevoked. I'm sure others can add to this list.
They seem to be making the most progress.
And sorry to hear about your phone updating itself. That sucks.

Wht is your Hboot version?
well it does not really matter the hboot. i can tell you, it is hboot 2.16. all gingerbread 2.3.3 regardless of software version (4.22.651.2 and 4.24.651.1) will have that hboot.
and unfortunately the devs will not post any progress. they may or may not post when an exploit is found. they may just post only when a temp root is available. it is all hush hush for fear of htc or even sprint releasing a silent ota that can close the exploit. so for now if you do not see any threads about an exploit or an ability to root your evo, then you should just wait. there will be posts (more like thousands, lol) about it.

I see. Well alright. I'll just wait patiently. I know the Devs will come up with something. They always do. Thanks for the reply.
I just bought my Evo 4G (RadioShack is having a sale on them now that the 3D is out) It also self-updated. I would really like to get it rooted. It comes with so much Sprint Bloatware I can only download a few apps before getting the "low space" warning.
Any help is appreciated.
Well... Is nothing you can do for now... Just waiting with all of us.
Unfortunately I received a new Evo from repair center with Hboot 2.16.0001 and last OTA included. I miss my rooted EVO...
Hope devs find a solution soon, thanks to everyone working on it.
I doubt very seriously its an auto ota update. If that was the case no one in the evo threads would still have root. It would've auto dated every evo still with 2.2, besides it says make sure the battery is full before u take it. #justsaying

make sure you get a good cleaner for history and cache it will help temporarily until a root for 2.3.3 is out.

If it were that simple, then the last revision of www.unrevoked.com would still work.

Now I am waiting for the guy with a refurb that is 2.3.3 S-Off to show up and say he has no problem flashing PC36IMG.zip files.
Rinse and repeat.
I just got my asurion phone today and while im pumped that its a brand new phone and came with new box and charger (YAYYY! i lost my old cord and charger a long time ago) i am deeply saddened by my findings today. Ill live since I like the sprint themes and functionality better than CM since my GPS stopped working on CM7 but i want to root so i can get wireless tether and whatnot.
in the mean time can anyone tell me how to shut the phone off all the way without pulling the battery. power off by pressing power button pretty much just puts it to sleep you cant get to recovery or hboot when powering back on.
