[Q] WTH happened to my phone's internal storage?! - Defy General

This afternoon I had around 800-900 MB of free storage in my phone's internal storage. Suddenly in the late evening, I got a notification that disk space is low. I checked the space usage and saw the remaining space is less than 50 MB! I did not use the phone since afternoon except playing Bubble Bash & Doodle Jump. What is more weird is within 7-10 minutes space came down to around 8MB!! I immediately restarted my phone and wiped cache and dalvik cache. This stopped the space auto-decrease weirdness but I did not regain my lost space back, and have no idea where it went!! I am using MIUI ROM at present and will really appreciate if someone can help me without me having to backup/restore my data. Thanks, Abhi.

It shows that some bad apps you installed were silently downloading or expanding something in the background. You have to trace back and narrow down from which app recently you installed caused this memory issue. Otherwise, a clean flash rom would be a good start.

^^Seems logical. However, my data plan expired one week back and I haven't reactivated it yet. So downloading is ruled out. Also, I have not installed any app in the past few days. So I don't get it why this will suddenly happen!! I also checked all the apps' data usage, and it was normal for all of them. Most probably I will end up wiping but I am still dumbfounded!!

Sometimes the data run even if it expired. Not sure how to explain this. Or some trojan/virus self expanding is resides in your system.
Installing anti virus might detect it. I'm using AVG full version anti virus. It scan every files installing or moving around the system or in the sdcard. So far so good..

Had this problem a month ago, too.
I deleted some apps and rebooted 2 or 3 times and the problem was solved. But i don't know why.

Can you tell me what were the apps that you removed?

No, I deleted just some of the apps I don't need hoping to get more free space.
Sorry, but I already said it was like a month ago or so.
I can't remember, but it was really strange and weird.

Ended up resetting!! This thread can be closed now!

Hmm how long has it been since setting it all up. It might just be all of the google stuff syncing... I had the same thing happen to me! Leave it for 20 minutes or something and see if it works any better
same issue here.. I HATE IT
I doubt it is because of root or rom. I had this issue as wel up until yesterday. It was suddenly fixed. I think because I usually install apps using Astro (or any file explorer), because of hard resetting etc. I thought maybe if i install an app directly from the market, it would fix it. I installed 'msn talk', did a reboot and it's fast now.. I don't know if this was what made it work, but it's working great now.
edit: before that I tried to uninstall a market update and reinstall again. But it was still slow after uninstall, reinstall and cleared caches.
I am on a non rooted device btw.
I`ve rooted 4 devices today and all same to have this issue .. ?
Just out of interest were any of you also missing the "top paid" tab as well. It was missing from my market after rooting as well as the slowdown, then it just appeared about a half hour in. Also did any of you have a similarly slow market when you first got the device. I am on T-mobile and for the first couple of days it was lagging in much the same way as it is now. Maybe it is to do with something new devices do, like the Google sync suggested.
I found that it is best to install all apps manually. Backup programs somehow slow everything down for me! Plus I dont know if the updates are pushed to you because the g market doesnt think you have installed them
My market is so slow but I didnt rooted my device

is that new issue or something to do with android market??? recent update or something? or it is just the desire? Sent from my HTC Desire using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
It's the same with mine (not rooted) since about 4 days. Have to keep rebooting even to try and install/uninstall anything.

Hmm..
No problems here at all.
Fast market, top paid apps showing.
Rooted with r3 linux cd method.
did not install a2sd.
so far no hiccups at all.
I'm getting this. Rooted, Apps2SD.
Been on a few different ROM's, now back to the original rooted one.
Not all of my restored apps (using Titanium Backup) were showing when I went to Downloads. What I have just done is got Settings - Applications - Manager Apps and cleared the market cache and all the apps seems to have returned. Still very slow though... but maybe getting quicker. Is it a syncing thing?
Anyone that did have the slow down, is it getting quicker now?
I can confirm, clearing the market cache seems to fix this.

Hello,
Yes before i rooted the Market was a dogs arse, Very slow, then after a day or to, it was as fast as i would expect it to be, then i rooted my device, again it was slow for a few days, but is now back to normal.
I think it just needs time to sort its self out, like a alcholic the morning after!!.
The only thing i have used diffrently since i rooted was the cache cleaner app in the market.
I can confirm, clearing the market cache seems to fix this.

It's not instant, but I had to do it again yesterday. I cleared cache and installed about 30 apps. By that time the market was back up to speed.
what if you have no cache to clear and the problem still persists
try logging into google talk, that works for me

Market apps downloads unsuccessful

Hi,is anyone else having problem downloading apps via Market?I've got an unbranded, unrooted Froyo Desire and downloads were fine yesterday but for some reason unknown,Google Market has refuse to complete downloads. Is this issue general?Cheers

It is driving me crazy all day as well! I got the impression that it was because I installed a new ROM or because I added an EXT partition in Clockworkmod recovery. This was the first time I wanted to try A2SD and it drove me crazy all day not being able to download apps anymore...
Not over Wifi, not over 3G...
And now I have to conclude more people are having this problem today haha
OMG
Yer its killing me,
I need to download My Backup Pro
Just flashed rom and cannot restore nothing.
Just noticed the same issue, was trying to update the YouTube app and download failed. Have tried a factory reset and this hasn't worked. There is a list of possible fixes on the Google support forum, just search for marketplace fix.
Seems odd that several people are having the same issue on the same day, perhaps its a marketplace fault?
Yeah the market is not working properly at the moment.

Alright so it's not just me going nuts...
same for me. been all night. driving me mad.
Someone from an android forum website suggested the following quote and guess what?,it worked! :-
"I know its going to sound daft, but load up Google talk, sign in, and then retry. I had a problem with my Hero back in the day and that worked. My downloads are going through fine atm"

Market working again
Had the same issue all day yesterday. The Market is working again this morning.
Had the same problem last night. It seems to be working fine today.
Working for me too this morning, tired the Google Talk tip along with many others re: clearing out various caches but none seemed to work. Obviously a fault with the market place than our actual phones.
So is this a common problem then, as I've just recently flashed my phone to 2.2 on the JPM firmware. I was beginning to think it was this, but after I thought about it, it happened to me this morning while I was still running 2.1.
How annoying!
hmm it diden't work yesterday for me but this morning it worked. but now it dosen't :S
I was having the same problem and tried the talk app logging in method which had worked previously in similar circumstances, but this time didn't work yesterday. Later I cleared the cache for the market app via the settings menu and it worked immediately, but was slower than usual.
my unrooted 2.2 desire will not update or download new apps from the market either.
i was thinking it was a memory issue.... had some issues on ota rom upgrade recently and i needed to uninstall 'Google earth' to get it to work despite phone showing ample memory free.
Also I have had the problem since downloading 'voice search' or this could be a coincidence.
So my phone or marketplace fault?
Is everyone else able to download/install again now?
[SOLVED] This is not a market / memory / phone issue
Guys,
I was having this exact same problem and after doing a bit of searching on the internet I found a solution:
It's something to do with internal phone cookies / tokens. The market depends on two sets of data - the market app and "download manager".
You can fix this problem easily in the future if you force close both, and then clear the cache and the data from both from settings -> applications -> manage apps
The reasons signing into google talk would have worked is that it updated the internal token
It seems the time out is very brief - but this is indeed the issue and its fixed every time using this method.
As far as I can tell there is a bug on Android developers already registered.
Sorry Mate ... doesen't fix the problem for me
make sure you force close the apps, market and download manager. then clear the data.
click on your market download list to rebuild it too. then it should work
I had same problem on my desire, and I looked the way to fix it. On phones memory was just 8% of free space, and I erased some apps. On the end I concluded that phone can't download or update anything if it has less than 10% free memory space. After I erased some apps and on that way make more free space on phones memory I was easy downloaded and updated apps from market. I must say that I have non rooted phone.
I hope so that I help with my thread.

DRM Protected Content Storage eating TONS of data and battery

So I've searched and searched and searched, and cannot find someone with the same issue as me. I am using GingerVillain ROM, and have recently noticed a TON of data being eaten up every day. I mean I normally would use less than 100MB per month, all of a sudden Im up to over 120MB a DAY. Doing nothing but email push! Also my battery life has just gone to nothing. Usually at around 85% as I leave work at night, now less than 40%.
Using 3G watchdog pro, Ive found out what is eating all the data. DRM protected content storage, download, download manager are all listed under an 85MB file that is downloaded every single day, sometimes twice a day. I'm assuming its an OTA update. I have frozen DRM protected content storage, no help. Frozen Download manager, well that sucks because the market won't work at all. Finally froze "download" and we'll see if that helps.
Anyone with any ideas what could be happening? Ive narrowed down what apps Ive recently installed, the only one that comes to mind is the Amazon MP3 store. I uninstalled that last week, but still getting this issue.
Any help would be AMAZING!

Same here
Just like the OP i've noticed that my data usage was unusually high in the month of September . At least 75-80 mb downloaded on a daily basis! I'm using Traffic Monitor and and it lists android.media:10014 as the culprit and under that header it lists Download Manager, Downloads, DRM Protected Storage and Media Storage. When I check task manager it usually shows DRM Protected Storage Media as active.
I'm actually starting to wonder if I downloaded some rogue app.
If someone can shed some light on this issue there is a big thank you in it for you!

Found out what's causing excessive data use, its Market trying to update itself. Only way I can stop this is to use Droidwall to block 'android.media' but then Market will not download apps.
The 70-80 meg one is the update from tmobile.

I never truly found out what was causing the data usage myself. The issue went away once I wiped and re-installed the latest MIUI ROM.

I tried that, and also tried removing marketupdater.apk from system. Both methods stopped it from updating but android.media still downloads an obscene amount of data. Very strange.

The only way I found to stop this was to let market update itself and live with it. Its really not that bad when you've been using it for a while.

if this is updating apps you can set the auto update on playstore to update only on wifi... Or disable the auto update at all..

[Q] Problem with phone sending massive amounts of data

My girlfriend's Arc is sending up to 50 mb of data every day and also receiving somewhere near that amount. I've had several data monitoring apps on it and they all give pretty much the same amount, and those that show what's been using the data all say it's the OS itself, so I can't manage the data it sends by any other means than switching data off entirely.
This has been happening for about a month and seems to be getting worse. She was running Gingerbread and I did two fresh installs, but they didn't change anything. I've now put Generic Global ICS on it and it's still the same.
Does anyone have any ideas? Another side effect seems to be that it's killing the battery. Could it even be a hardware problem?

[Q] Phone dead slow after using it for copying files

Hello,
I recently used a data recovery app on my Galaxy Nexus to recover some deleted photos. The application worked a little too well, recovered about 16,000 jpegs and pngs, saving which I ended up with around 350 MB of disk space left on my phone.
When I noticed my phone getting slow, I deleted everything, did a factory reset, a clean wipe and installed a CM 11 nightly - nothing helps. Though on 3G, apps take forever to get downloaded and installed. I need to sit and wait on the installed apps to open, even making a phone call is a dreadful experience now.
Is there anything that I can do to get my phone back to speed?
Not sure if it'll work for you but this really helped fixed lag issue for me:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.grilledmonkey.lagfix
If that doesn't work, I read before that when reflashing a ROM to first factory wiping 2-3 times in a row.
Also seems to helps with lag to allows keep >4gb free storage.

Thank you, Isajoo. I tried this tool now, got an error saying that some partitions are not supported. Anyway, I have tried it on the partition it supports, let me play around with my phone for a while and see if it has helped improve anything.
Btw, after deleting everything, I have around 6GB of free space...
I guess its working! Though its still lags while taking/making calls and unlocking the screens, the downloading/installing and many other operations are considerably faster now.
Thanks a ton, mate. I was absolutely clueless before...
