[Q] Cannot send or receive texts/can't send e-mail - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I was using the rooted stock gingerbread rom and decided to flash CM7 to see what all the hype was about. I followed the steps outlined in the CM7 wiki, and the whole thing was a nightmare. constant FC messages and every time I tried to restore my apps via Mybackuproot I was unable to move anything to the SD card even after enabling app2sd in CM7.
I even went so far as to do a factory reset, wipe cache/dalvik and try reflashing. No dice. All I manged to do there was create a boot loop which forced me to do the whole process a second time.
I gave up and just decided to restore the nandroid backup I had made just a few days ago.
But now, I'm having issues with send and receiving items. I can receive e-mails but when I reply it's stuck in "sending"
Apparently I can send texts (sent one to a friend who said they got it) but I cannot receive them.
I updated prl and profile in the settings. Now i'm at a loss. How do I fix this??

You can rewipe everything and reflash the stock Rom that you were running before your "nightmare" journey, and see if that clears up your texting problem.
now the voices are in 3d

I went into the applications setting and cleared the data from the gmail app and from the hancent/stock text message settings.
I can now send e-mails, but I still can't receive text messages.
Before doing any of that I booted into recovery and did a factory wipe and cleared dalvik/cache again. I then reflashed my recovery.
Still not having luck with receiving messages. help!

bump?
I installed google voice and I'm now getting text messages through there, but my stock app/handcent still aren't getting anything incoming.
I cleared the cache and force closed both programs, I made sure sync was enabled. I'm a loss here

did you go into mobile network settings and make sure you didn't uncheck boxes there?

[Q] Text messages dissapear on leaked 2.2?

Hello. I have never had this issue before until I installed the leaked 2.2 OTA. Today I went into the marketplace and google said it could not connect to my google account, which was odd because that had never happened before. It told me to enter a captcha and then I proceeded to go to the marketplace like nothing happened.
I didn't really think anything of it until about an hour later when I opened up my text messaging app. The only texts that were there were a few texts that a friend sent me earlier today. Hundreds of my other texts have just simply disappeared. Could this be related to my google account getting logged out somehow?
I am really not sure if this has to do with the leaked OTA or not, but this is just extremely weird that this would happen. Has this happened to anyone else? If so, any fix?
The leaked OTA should have required a full wipe of your phone. SMS messages are included in that, I'm afraid, which is also why you'd have to relog into the Market.

I don't think you understand what I was trying to ask. I fully understand that installing the OTA required a full wipe. After doing a wipe and installing the OTA, I restored the data from a nandroid backup I had made prior to flashing the OTA. I did this by using the advanced restore option. I got all my apps, text messages, call logs, ect back with the new OTA. Everything was working fine for about 2 days until out of nowhere I was logged out of my google account and then my text messages just disappeared. Luckily I had the majority of them saved in that very nandroid backup but I'm still puzzled why this happened in the first place.
Oops double post.

Ohhhhhhh. Now I understand what happened. That's extremely odd. I have no idea what could have caused it. Hasn't occurred to me yet.

[Q] Reboot on unlock after receiving texts.

Hi All,
I have a droid incredible that I was running CM7 on. At some point the phone started rebooting randomly when I pressed the unlock button. This happened a few times a day and I eventually realized that these reboots were only happening when I unlocked the phone after receiving a text.
This didn't happen on all texts, but maybe half or so. I've done the following to try to remedy the problem, but it is still occurring:
- wiped cache/dalvik cache.
- methodically removed app by app, cleared app data.
- removed all phone/rom backups.
- wiped data/factory reset of CM7.
- installed latest MIUI rom.
- wiped data/factory reset of MIUI.
I am currently running a wiped MIUI rom with only the apps that came preloaded on the rom. I feel like I've tried everything and can't figure this out!
Anyone have any thoughts on this? Thanks so much for your help!
It's still happening on MIUI or only on the CM7? Was it a Nightly?
Is messages cache full, or nearly so?
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA Premium App
Bull_Moose, I have been using the latest CM7 RC1... never used a nightly. The ROM worked fine for a while and then a few months ago started rebooting after receiving texts. I switched over to MIUI, hoping it would solve my issues...but it didn't.
smtom, Is there a messages cache that can be cleared specifically? I've never seen it. I'm assuming, though, that since I've done several complete wipes of the phone that all caches would have been cleared anyways...
The sheer number of messages, over time, will yield the dreaded low on space notice. This is rendered moot by either backup of messages somewhere using something like SMS Backup +, or deleting threads, and storing your multimedia message attachments to sd or elsewhere. Couple questions : are you restoring messages across or between ROM's? What messaging application are you using?

Hi smtom,
Sorry for the delay. So, I do regularly use SMS Backup and Restore to archive my messages into separate files so that I can occasionally delete all message threads and clear up space.
When I have wiped or switched roms in the past I have always done clean installs, which should clear all message memory, right? I am currently just using whatever SMS app comes preinstalled on MIUI.
My problem with the phone restarting has continued despite all of this... but I wonder if using a 3rd party messaging app could make a difference. Hmmmm.
Ray
RayLJill, have you figured anything out since switching to a 3rd party app? My friend's incredible is getting the random reboots, new sms text messages or not. He is on most current CM7 Nightly after I did a complete wipe/factory reset/format all memory and clean install (he was having this issue on CM7 nighties before i did the clean install, still didn't help i guess)

[Q] Restoring SMS Breaks ROMs ( Help Please )

I would REALLY appreciate some help with this please, because after 10 reflashes, I still can't find the problem. I've been trying to flash the Darkside Evolution ROM ( latest T-Mobile version ) on my phone. Everything seems to work fine, until I start restoring my text messages, at which point, all hell breaks lose. My stock messaging app just brings up a black screen and eventually FCs, Google Play keeps FCing as well, and occasionally, no keys typed in any of my keyboard apps show up in the fields selected. Reboots don't help.
Here's how I've been flashing ( running CWM 5.0.2.7 non-touch ): 1. flash darkside super wipe. 2. flash ROM. 3. flash darkside cache-wipe. 4. let system sit 10 minutes before toying with it. I've also tried flashing the cache-wipe after the 10 minute system sit, but I still have issues.
Here's what I've tried, with no success:
1. Searching the forums for any possible solution, but to no avail.
2. Mainly use GoSMS to backup & restore texts, but also tried SMS Backup & Restore and GoBackup instead, with same results, if not worse.
3. Re-ODINed to stock, rooted and flashed CWM again .
4. Checked MD5 checksum of all files I've said I've used; all are verified as correct.
5. Tried Settings->Applications, and deleting cache / data for troubled apps. Only fixes issue with Google Play.
5. Tried different ROMs ( Juggernaut v5.0 and Darkside Digital Warfare v2.7-( my somewhat stable DD until now) months ago, and Infamous 2.6-(worked after a couple of tries, but missing features I need) and Darkside Evolution v7 the past few days ).
TL;DR - Restoring SMS breaks any Rom I flash. Help please?
Could someone help, pretty please?
...I'm sorry if I sound pushy or agitated, but I spent about 20 hours just this past week, wiping, flashing, and restoring, over and over again with quite a few different ROMs to no avail, and unfortunately I'm not exaggerating. I'm tech savvy, but I know anyone can make stupid mistakes, and I would just REALLY appreciate it if someone could help me finally get to the bottom of this; it's been the bane of my rooting life. I can get on an IM app if that would make it easier.
I used to use Titanium Backup to restore sms & mms. But now I use Go Backup and hadn't had any issues. Every time I've used SMS Backup. I would get issues of the app freezing. I'm using TWRP for my recovery. I know some Dev's say not to use it but I haven't had one issue with it at all.
When you do restore your SMS & MMS are you rebooting your device right after?

Thanks for the reply. I've mostly used GoSMS Backup, but I've tried SMS Backup & Restore, Go Backup, and TiBu ( with "Migrate System Data" checked ) this week, but all of them cause random issues. I've been hesitant about using TWRP because a lot of people don't recommend it, but I don't mind giving that a shot if it won't brick my phone. Is there anything I should know about using it?
And sometimes I reboot right after an SMS/MMS restore, and sometimes I try to access the messages before rebooting. With TiBu, I always reboot first now. Either way, I still have issues.
I'm also on DarksideEvolution.3.v7, and have used SMS Backup and Restore without any issues. Also used SMS Backup+ without issues. I've restored anywhere from 400-800 +/- messages. How many text messages are you trying to restore? My only thought, was if your backup has thousands of messages, it may cause a memory issue that causes the hang ups.
I'm trying to restore about 12,000 text messages...
I was able to get DarksideEvolution3v7 completely working once, except that my GPS wasn't working, so I was going to wait until TDJ releases an update with a GPS fix until I try Darkside again. I haven't used SMS Backup+ because I don't want to use cloud services, and SMS Backup & Restore is one of the best working ones right now. I just tried GoBackup again, and after about 65%, it force closed with some kind of unknown exception error, and no texts showed even after a reboot.
That's your issue. Had it happen to me awhile back. Had to do some manipulation to get it to work. I forget the details exactly unfortunately. However, I do recall it was related to The max limiter in the messaging app and had to go with handcent, adjusted max sms settings higher prior to SMS refresh. Then had some issues with mMs which is the part I forget
Tb has the xml backup feature now, that might help since the backup file is smaller, so maybe memory isn't such an issue
I was afraid it might be something like that. I've had issues with previous phones restoring texts when I start hitting around 10k messages, but nothing this severe, and I figured that our SGSII's processing power should be able to handle it. I've been making sure that under the stock messaging settings, "Delete Old Messages" is always unchecked, but I'm not sure if that's what the max limiter is.
And do you know if there's anything special that I have to do to activate that TiBu feature? I saw it in my changelog when I updated, but I wasn't sure.

[Q] MMS gone after 4.2 update

I'm having an issue that I can't seem to work around no matter what I do
I'm trying to update from a 4.1.2 rom to 4.2 (Paranoid Android, but same thing happens if I use any 4.2 rom), but when I do, all of my MMS messages disappear. SMS is still there, and conversation threads have the paperclip icon indicating that the thread contains MMS messages, but when looking at the thread, they are just completely gone.
I initially installed the rom by doing a full wipe, and then restoring data with Titanium Backup. Everything restored fine, except for messages playing up like I already described. I've also tried MyBackup, and get the same issues.
If I restore only MMS with MyBackup, they restore fine, but when I try to restore the SMS, conversation threads won't load until I reboot the phone. And same the other way around, if I restore SMS first, they work, but then MMS prevents conversation threads loading.
I'd really rather not lose all of my messages, and I've been hoping a fix would come up somewhere, but I haven't even heard of anyone else having the same problem, so I'm hoping someone might have some other ideas to try that I haven't already thought of

Messages wont send

I have been using Messages 5.0 on my Galaxy S8+ (no root) for a while now, and I decided I wanted to go back to the stock version that came with the phone. So i uninstalled the updates and I got back to the stock version, but for some reason I cannot send text messages. When I press the "send" button, the message in the box literally just disappears. The thing is, when i go back to the Messages 5.0, it works perfectly fine, and using another messaging app such as Google Messages works fine as well. I have already rebooted the device, wiped the cache on my phone, cleared cache from the stock messages , and cleared the data from the stock messages. I do not want to factory reset because it is pretty unnecessary for a minuscule problem. Any help is appreciated because this is frustrating me and I cannot find any other threads anywhere that discuss this issue.
