I've just installed 2.3.3 which i really like the look of but i didnt know anything about red and green lenses as the camera doesnt work at all.
Am i right in thinking that i'm now stuck with 2.3.3 ?
I cant seem to root it which as far as i know means i cant install any other roms
Is this right ??
Come on people, tell me if you can root this rom please...or at least if i can roll back to another rom where my camera works.
Some posts exist to root any rom, and every rom in http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=855 are rooted ...
Only 4.5.1-85 can root direct. (Gingerbreak.apk)

Thanks for the replies, farsight73 I dont really know what i'm doing i suppose is the answer ! Most of the jargon I dont understand....tell me, can i flash a new sbf (rom?) without the handset being rooted ?
Yes I supposed... But only higher sbf since you won't be able to downgrade. So practically from 2.3.3 to higher like 2.3.4.. But I did read somewhere that someone like your case was able to flash back to 2.2.2.. may be walter could help you. Please pm him..

hi all
i was just after a little advice as a newbie here...ive got a rooted defy with a 2.2.1 uk rom and want to put 2.2.2 uk official rom on.do i just simply need to flash the new rom with rsdlite?.also the rom has a .sbf.gz file extension..do i just remove the .gz?
thanks for any help..
scottie
There's no big difference between 2.2.1 and 2.2.2. If you have red lens defy you can flash 2.3.4. It's awesome
sent from my MotoDefy
If It's .gz just extract it with WINRAR.
Sent from my MB525 using XDA App
U just use cm7 2.3.4 .......
I LIKE MY DEFY and i m sure that i ll keep it for atleast 3 years.....After 3 years a lot of phones would have come and there may be a lot of additional feaures......There may be virtual Retinal tech...i m not sure of the name ............can anyone tell me what features would have come????
thanks for the replies..am having troubles extracting the image file..winrar just gives me an error when i try to extract it..grr
i dont know if its a corrupt download any chance someone could upload another version?

Nice one pleased you got sorted.
I've got the sbf saved in RDS Lite just in case I need to send off for a warranty fix
Which 2.3.4 version you going to try - I'm running Quarx' CM7 with the Nordic sbf as a base & it's really very good. It runs much better than when my phone was on eclair & better than when I flashed froyo
thanks sp8y i'm just browsing the 2.3.4's at the moment..but the one u mentioned seems to be pretty stable
Hey friends...
My friend has recently bought a defy in India... It came with eclair...
Now he wants to upgrade to gingerbread... But he doesn't want to root... So can anyone please help me? As I'm a Samsung user, I don't know anything about Motorola devices or how to upgrade them... So I would appreciate a noob friendly guide...
Thanks...
u cannot upgrade to gingerbread w/o rooting...defy has got the official froyo, not gingerbread..
please read the pinned posts if u wish to know how to flash a custom gingerbread rom..

He can update to Froyo, but there is no official Gingerbread update from Motorola for the Defy (and there will never be one).
If he doesn't want to tinker a bit he won't get Gingerbread (there are also 2.3 ports of the Defy Plus that work quite well, but rooting is necessary to install anything like that).

You can mess around with your Defy s much as you want, root, install ROMs, flash sbfs... And you can ALWAYS go back to the stock Foyo/ Eclair firmware your Defy came with. Even if something went wrong and the phone doesn't boot anymore, just flash a stock clean Motorola firmware and everything's gone (the ROM you had before, also the root). So also if your Defy has a hardware problem and you want to send it back, just go back to stock before and you don't have to worry about the warranty.

I don't think so. if you changed the bootloader version you will be stuck on some higher kernel and can not easily go back.. (that was what happend to epsylon3 - one of the main devs of CM9 for defy) - so if you flashed official froyo - you will not be able to go back to eclair for example. (as is also pointed out here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=966537)
A piece of advice: read a lot (here in this forums) before you flash something. It help you not getting in trouble with your phone.

There is no point in using defy with the buggy stock Eclair/Froyo ..
If u want to see the complete potential of defy Root it and Install CM7..
and yes you can go back when ever you want but make sure u take the Nandroid backup of the stock ROM that u r using and check whether the official sbf of ur region is available to download.so that u can flash it and restore the nandroid backup .. !!

Right, that was the only thing I wasn't thinking about. That is what is usually written in big red letters when there's something about these sbfs. But normally there is no need to change the bootloader version by installing the (not fixed) 2.3.4 sbf.
The only really current reliable options for the Defy imho are CM7.1, MIUI (and some versions based on it) and the Defy+ based ROMs (like MS2Ginger). With none of them you risk to be stuck somewhere - I flashed stock Froyo a dozen times without problems.
Thanks all for your replies....

Need help regarding my Arc S
i am on locked bootloader 4.0.4 ics. I dont want to unlock bootloader and do any fast boot mode, cwm or to remain in 4.0.3 kernel with skipping 4.0.4 kernel while flashing to 4.0.4 full update, then flashing 4.0.4 individually later way , etc ...
I understand both 4.0.3 and 4.0.4 kernel version are same but still 4.0.4 isn't rootable the old Root Exploit One Click way, which was used for 4.0.3 . So definately there could be some difference mayb better battery performance, they would have locked to not be able to root the old way and something new is needed for it? i mean they maybe would have just modified the same kernel version...
so please would highly appreciate anyone's help if one can provide me root 4.0.4 kernel the One Click way .
Regards

That's exactly what he said he DIDN'T want to do. LOL!
@shantusingh, there is no other way currently known to root 4.0.4 other than the steps you mentioned in your first step.

thanks for understanding and for letting me know, though hope one simple way comes out soon..
my basic idea is as like many others, we try different generic and in end we would only want our generic to be running when it officially comes because maybe we get less bloatware, better performance or could be anything..
so i want when i get 4.0.4 update then i cleanely update with root one click way... to get everything my generic with root in the end, even if other generic's kernel verison, etc be the same...
So i am counting on the genius devs here!
if we don't get root one click way for 4.0.4, then my other idea is i will officially update 4.0.4 via pc camp when it comes to india .. and when i get it i will check it with the 4.0.3's kernel version screenshot that i will already save to pc. So if they will be the same.... i will then only flash 4.0.3's kernel then will root my phone the old one click way ....
after that then will flash my phone with 4.0.4's kernel from 4.0.4 update ftf which was leaked on xda as i wont mind flashing other generic if everything matches. So i then will get it confirmed everything from stock that what i got in my region was the same aswell i didn't missed anything and will in end have stock 4.0.4 with stock 4.0.4 kernel(of other generic, but if version and everything will be same so can say indian kernel aswell) rooted! this way. Will do all this only if root one click simple way isn't developed for 4.0.4
Hope people understood what i am tring to explain the logic, it is very complex and absurd but all in the end all i am asking is to get same simple way to root 4.0.4 in the end

Hey guys, I have a problem. I bought a Sony Xperia Play, the Verizon version on ebay and it works like a champ. But Its on 2.3.3 and I really want it on 2.3.4! The phone has no service so I cant update it to the 2.3.4 over the connection. Please, there must be a way to download the 2.3.4 update for the R800x version and flash it to the phone. And I need step my simple noob step instructions as to how to do this, if there's a way, because other forums that I have seen are far to complicated and doesn't explain in good detail. Thanks again

Trust us r800x users when we say you do not want 2.3.4. It sucks, stay with 2.3.3. Also, I'm certain that verizon scraped the update because they screwed it up so badly.(bad service, if any, no wifi, massive compatibility issue with apps, etc.) I myself went back to 2.3.3 because 2.3.4 was so bad.

It is highly recommended that you do not update to 2.3.4, as it has massive compatibility issues.
2.3.3 to 2.3.4
Is it really that bad? Because I thought it was good. Well is there a way for my phone to get the Time Scape ui on it, and for it to record 720p? I know the official update allowed he recording. Any help its greatly appreciated.
You could flash a custom rom.

Absolutely. Stay with 2.3.3 unless you are an advanced user and with to load a custom ROM.
What custom rom has 720p and a cool ui on top, like the official update offered?
Also, How on earth do you put the phone in fastboot, flash ''img'' files to it, and type commands into it. Im really confused as to how that works

actually there are some gsm based roms that work with cdma stock locked bootloader that just break phone functionality
(OP seems to have no service anyways...)

Other options
Thought I would chime in here. Not sure why every one is hating on stock 2.3.4. Oh wait yea I do lol. Anyway if your not using the phone part itself instead of paying to unlock you could just root and try Gin2Ics. I know the theme works on stock 2.3.4 but the dialer and contacts are messed up and no service as well as battery stats being broke. There is also a 2.3.4 ftf file now in the dev section.
There is another thread in the dev section where they are trying to port some stuff to the vzw 2.3.4.
Okay, sorry for the late response guys, but I now have my bootloader unlocked!! Yes! Now, my final question is how do I get Timescape ui and all the SE goodness on my r800X? And I know I keepbringing it up, but can I get 720p record feature? Any rom that can offer that, Im cool.

If you haven't seen this before, maybe you should wear glasses...I don't get the question as you are not very clear. If you are S-OFF and running a custom rom, updating via software (menu>about software...) might brick your device.
If you are just rooted, then you will root. S-OFF is pretty different from Root, so if you want a 2.3.5 rom you have plenty of them in the development section of the forum...and even as guy says, you have even JB roms.
Maybe you need to do some research before posting this things that are covered all around the forum.
