Hi all. Yesterday i updated to gingerbread ... now my "desire z" info says:
Android version: 2.3.3
HTC Sense version: 2.1
Kernel version: 2.6.35.10-g7b95729
Build number: 2.42.405.2 CL84109 release keys
Software number: 2.42.405.2
Browser version: WebKit/533.1
so as far as i know there isnt any way to downgrade that - is it true?
correct me if im wrong but downgrade for me is needed in case i want to root/s-off my phone and install some new roms (with better look and funcionality) - do i get it right?
i updated my phone just because i thought the senseUI will be updated too but i was a fool - i thought desire Z is a good phone and they will continue to support one of the best touch and type phones...

no one is lynching you, he posted a link that states it cannot be downgraded which confirms your original question: you cannot downgrade yet and are stuck with the 2.42 update for the time being.
If you want root, you shouldn't have accepted the OTA undate. There is a pre-rooted version in the Development section. But you're pretty much hosed, no way to downgrade or root the new update, until somebody figures out a way.
In the future ask questions first and install updates second

I've posted a similar thread which ended up in Q&A, but nobody looks there so I'm posting again in the hope someone can shed some light.
I've got a Virgin Desire (2nd hand) which I've debranded with the 2.1 HTC ROM I downloaded and flashed.
How do I get the new 2.2 on the phone? When I do OTA checks for updates it says none available and I can't find a thread with any information on what to do in this situation.
I've searched and checked many times and would appreciate some help!
Cheers,
Joe

I guess You will have to download any Froyo room and flash it manually. OTA update depends on carriers. Hope it helps
So for example, I flash the T-Mob ROM and then wait for the OTA from them?
If you have debranded and now have the HTC Generic ROM installed (with goldcard) then all you have to do is wait a couple days and keep checking.
Or as said above, download a 2.2 generic rom and flash that. Take a look around here, there's plenty of links to download available.
Thanks, I have the generic HTC ROM installed, so my final question is do I need the goldcard in there for the phone to recognise that there is an update available? I took it out at is was a 2gb card and have my normal 6gb card in there at present.
Cheers,
Joe
If your phone WAS branded then you'll need the gold card for ALL future updates

I think you should just put that in your signature
Seems to be what I say in all threads these days, isn't it??
Thanks guys - it may be what you say a lot but my search terms didn't lead me to it.
Perhaps a sticky would be good for this gem of a piece of information?
Go on, tell me it was there all the time and I missed it, hehe.
Just need to search 'debrand htc desire' and most of the threads at some point say keep the gold card in
Yep, freshly redone goldcard in (the one used for debranding) and hey presto...
No updates. Boo hoo.
I'll leave it in for a couple of days then and see what happens.
Geez, just download any Froyo rom and flash already. There are countless threads about this in this forum.

Dude, this phone was with Virgin and there's more chance of Santa Claus taking a dump in my toilet than getting 2.2 from them!
I figured vanilla HTC 2.1 would get the purest and quickest updates.
RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.09.405.8_Radio_32.43.00.32U_5.09.00.20_release_140022_signed is what I used to flash it a few weeks back.
So if you've got that ROM what's the issue? Other than needing a gold card to get the new OTA there's nothing else you need as the OTA should just download and install
What ROM are you on at the mo?
Just looked at that page...
Edit: this is what I have now and I'm downloading the ROM and radio files from your sig Eddy. That presumably will sort it out.
And I now realise I've been a complete spack here. It's the recent (Sept 2010) 2.2 update I want - I know I have basic Froyo already.
Android version
2.2
Baseband
32.43.00.32U_5.09.00.20
Kernel
2.6.32.15-gf9c0527
Build
2.09.405.8 CL218634 release-keys
Software number
2.09.405.8
Browser version
Webkit 3.1
So am I on the latest and greatest anyway?
Oh arsemonkeys, the tribulation continues.
So I get the ROM on Eddy's sig, run it with fresh goldcard in and itonly goes so far and dumps me out with the black screen/HTC logo - first on the PC is said waiting for bootloader and a couple of minutes later it errored out - something about USB connection error.
So I search and try the white bootloader/fastboot screen approaches but get even less far in.
I've done plenty of searching but the problem is that there is so much information here it's like a needle in a haystack to work out what I need to do to get this ROM on board.
If anyone can help me out then feel free - I'm well and truly befuddled now!
Wait there's an official 2.2 rom for the Desire?

Dude, i don't understand what your asking for here. Isnt it on 2.2 already ??
2.10.405.2 is the latest version, is it not saying it's there if you check for OTAs?
Yes that's what I mean Eddy, no updates show up as being available, whether a gold card is in or not and to top it off I don't seem to be able to install the ROM on your Sig.

Hello Everybody,

i spent these 2 days navigating the web trying to collect as much knowledge about my new phone
i became interested about Rooting topics ... even though i did not found a full simple guide to do it on my Desire HD
can i root my Desire HD or not? based on the details below
The phone is Branded to Vodafone UK
Android Ver.
2.2.1
Baseband Ver.
12.28e.60.140fU_26.04.02.17_M2
Software No.
1.75.161.2
if yes, could you please provide me with some kind of detailed specific guide to do it with the required software links
if no, why? and what specifically should i wait for?
sorry guys for talking so much

Thanks a lot in Advance
Best Regards,
You can't root on 2.2.1 without S-OFF (to have S-OFF U must have a root). We must wait for solution.

Here you can downgrade.
Hello All,
I'm new to desire and android.
My HTC Desire works with version 2.1-update 1.
I know that v2.2 is available and I activated the automatic update but I did not get any notifications for the new version 2.2!
I checked for update manually but I got a message that my phone is up to date!
Well, I made some search online to know how to get the 2.2 on my phone. I found some ppl says that I need to do "WIPE" to my phone before installing the new froyo 2.2! but what is meant by WIPE? how could I do Wipe?
Also, how could I get the new version 2.2? do you have any direct link for this version? after downloading the version on my computer, how could I install it to my desire? I'll appreciate the detailed steps
Also I found some ppl talking about "root" and "ROM"!! what does that mean?
do I need to do root, rom?
All what I want is to know how to update my 2.1 to 2.2 without loosing the HTC sense. I forgot to tel you that my current version supports the Arabic language and the English language read and write. so I need the Froyo version that supports both languages.
Thank you for your patience and you help will be appreciated
Go to Settings>About phone>Software information and post up the 'Software version'
We'll go from there, but if you're on 2.29.405.5 then you're already on 2.2 and the latest version too
You just need to check out the rom development section. From there on you start reading. There are a lot of tutorials in that section.
At first you won't know what everything meanes, but if you read it, you will understand.
Just don't do anything that you don't understand, that will save you a lot of problems.
And yes if you want to flash a custom rom you need root and you can get root by unrevoked.

3)yes, there are plenty available in the android development sub forum
Thanks For Help
but remember rooting your phone will void its warranty.....but you will surely enjoy if your phone is already rooted....
hello …... can i ask some noob questions ….. cause this thread one of the best and most organized one’s ….i’m not expert in modifying android …. but i need to root my device because some apps won’t work without it …......
i read a lot about the root thing and it was confusing ..
so i downloaded the aahk kit and read the Effen Manual ( i found that you really hate those who start the process without reading the instructions > so i did my homework and studied the manual ))))
but still have some question that need to be answered before i start …
my device is not rooted before ….i bought with the original OS and updated to GB after one day .. and couple weaks ago i recieved the new 2.3.5 with sense 3.0 .. OTA.......
i understood that the root thing doesn’t erase any data in your device (contacts, music, pics,or apps ))......but when i read the effen manual i found this in (imported version notes ) If you are running one of the following Sense 3 build versions a full downgrade is required, which means your data WILL be lost ….
one of them is : HTC Arabic 3.13.415.2 downgrades to HTC ARABIC GB 2.42.415.1
my version ….. is 3.13.415.2
(1) so that mean i will lose everything ????
(2) after downgrade to GB2.42.415.1 and finishing the root …. what version will i have the 2.42.415.1 or the 3.13.415.2........
(3) will the android 2.3.5 and sense 3.0 remain without change or will it change to previous version ….
(4) at last … if i want to return the device back to the original condition can i ?? if yes it will return to 3.13.415.2 a previous one >>> and it will return to android 3.3.5 with sense 3.0 or previous one …...and if it will return to a previous one will i be able to update it to 2.3.5 with sense 3.0 through the regular way ( through setting>about phone>software updates ) or will i have to do it manually …...
one more thing if used unofficial rom (cayoon …. etc ) then decided to return to my original rom ...can i ???
sorry to bother you with my noob questions ...but i will be more than pleased if you helped me out …. cause i really found your thread pretty use full , organized and cleared …

AFAIK, there is no way to root firmware 3.13 (correct me if I'm wrong). In order to root it, you must downgrade your device in a lower version that has the root exploit.
To answer your questions:
(1) so that mean i will lose everything ???? - Yes since you are downgrading your device, all data will be erased.
(2) after downgrade to GB2.42.415.1 and finishing the root …. what version will i have the 2.42.415.1 or the 3.13.415.2........ - It will be 2.42.415.1 since you downgrade your device to this version.
(3) will the android 2.3.5 and sense 3.0 remain without change or will it change to previous version …. - It will be changed the version which firmware 2.42.415.1 has. If you want to get Sense 3.0 and android 2.3.5 again, you will then have to flash a new ROM on your device that has Sense 3.0 and Android 2.3.5
(4) if you want to go back to stock after rooting, you can download a RUU with the build/firmware number you want to go back with then flash it on your phone then everything will be back on stock.
thank you very much for the explication ......
do you advice me to go through all this ....i need the root and i don't want to stuck with old version which mean i have to flash custom room .....and i'm beginner at this things ..and it will be my first time to root and flash rom...??????

It is up to you bro . If you are not satisfied with the stock ROM and you want to do other things that require Root access then go ahead. If you are satisfied enough with the stock, I suggest do not.
If you decide to continue rooting it, my advice is to be very careful. Though most of the people here on XDA successfully rooted their devices, there is still a chance to brick your device if you not follow the correct procedures. Read and follow the instructions step by step so you wont brick your phone.
By the way, if your DHD still has warranty, you will be losing it if you root. So think first if you want root or not. Its your device anyways

Bro I advise you to try HTC supertool... It can root ur sense 3 without downgrade... Try... Also there are fewer instructions to follow... Not that never-ending effen manual.... Just search xda for HTC supertool...
