How to get 2.2 on a debranded phone? - Desire General

I've posted a similar thread which ended up in Q&A, but nobody looks there so I'm posting again in the hope someone can shed some light.
I've got a Virgin Desire (2nd hand) which I've debranded with the 2.1 HTC ROM I downloaded and flashed.
How do I get the new 2.2 on the phone? When I do OTA checks for updates it says none available and I can't find a thread with any information on what to do in this situation.
I've searched and checked many times and would appreciate some help!
Cheers,
Joe

I guess You will have to download any Froyo room and flash it manually. OTA update depends on carriers. Hope it helps

So for example, I flash the T-Mob ROM and then wait for the OTA from them?

If you have debranded and now have the HTC Generic ROM installed (with goldcard) then all you have to do is wait a couple days and keep checking.
Or as said above, download a 2.2 generic rom and flash that. Take a look around here, there's plenty of links to download available.

Thanks, I have the generic HTC ROM installed, so my final question is do I need the goldcard in there for the phone to recognise that there is an update available? I took it out at is was a 2gb card and have my normal 6gb card in there at present.
Cheers,
Joe

If your phone WAS branded then you'll need the gold card for ALL future updates

I think you should just put that in your signature

Seems to be what I say in all threads these days, isn't it??

Thanks guys - it may be what you say a lot but my search terms didn't lead me to it.
Perhaps a sticky would be good for this gem of a piece of information?
Go on, tell me it was there all the time and I missed it, hehe.

Just need to search 'debrand htc desire' and most of the threads at some point say keep the gold card in

Yep, freshly redone goldcard in (the one used for debranding) and hey presto...
No updates. Boo hoo.
I'll leave it in for a couple of days then and see what happens.

Geez, just download any Froyo rom and flash already. There are countless threads about this in this forum.

Dude, this phone was with Virgin and there's more chance of Santa Claus taking a dump in my toilet than getting 2.2 from them!
I figured vanilla HTC 2.1 would get the purest and quickest updates.
RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.09.405.8_Radio_32.43.00.32U_5.09.00.20_release_140022_signed is what I used to flash it a few weeks back.

So if you've got that ROM what's the issue? Other than needing a gold card to get the new OTA there's nothing else you need as the OTA should just download and install
What ROM are you on at the mo?

Just looked at that page...
Edit: this is what I have now and I'm downloading the ROM and radio files from your sig Eddy. That presumably will sort it out.
And I now realise I've been a complete spack here. It's the recent (Sept 2010) 2.2 update I want - I know I have basic Froyo already.
Android version
2.2
Baseband
32.43.00.32U_5.09.00.20
Kernel
2.6.32.15-gf9c0527
Build
2.09.405.8 CL218634 release-keys
Software number
2.09.405.8
Browser version
Webkit 3.1
So am I on the latest and greatest anyway?

Oh arsemonkeys, the tribulation continues.
So I get the ROM on Eddy's sig, run it with fresh goldcard in and itonly goes so far and dumps me out with the black screen/HTC logo - first on the PC is said waiting for bootloader and a couple of minutes later it errored out - something about USB connection error.
So I search and try the white bootloader/fastboot screen approaches but get even less far in.
I've done plenty of searching but the problem is that there is so much information here it's like a needle in a haystack to work out what I need to do to get this ROM on board.
If anyone can help me out then feel free - I'm well and truly befuddled now!

Wait there's an official 2.2 rom for the Desire?

Dude, i don't understand what your asking for here. Isnt it on 2.2 already ??

2.10.405.2 is the latest version, is it not saying it's there if you check for OTAs?

Yes that's what I mean Eddy, no updates show up as being available, whether a gold card is in or not and to top it off I don't seem to be able to install the ROM on your Sig.

[Q] Download Froyo 2.2

Hi All,
Please bear with me - I'm a late Desire joiner.
I've been reading the Froyo update threads but haven't found an answer.
Phone is UAE version, Arabic and English, and has ROM v 2.1xx on it.
The updater says there is no update.
How can I download the stock HTC 2.2 ROM, please?
All help much appreciated.
OK - I've been to the HTC website and 2.2 is not available for my phone - I guess that this is because they haven't got around to the Arabic yet!
So, I'd like to install a UK English version of 2.2 - where can I get it?
Check you screen
Hi,
Im a fellow newbie HTC Desire user. I just rooted my Desire now running on custom ROM. I think you need to check first if you have SLCD or AMOLED screen. Most RUUs are not compatible with SLCD Desire phone.
You can re-direct to Informative Threads, Links & Info - READ THIS FIRST ! thread and refer to [ROM] Official HTC Desire RUU ROMS and OTA Update URLs.
Hope this helps.
Many thanks.
I've installed roms before on my WinMo phones quite happily.
But, this time I'd like to stay with the stock rom from HTC, so I just want to upgrade to 2.2 for the improved functionality ........ I think I need to fool HTC into thinking that the phone is in the UK and it will upgrade OTA?
Hmmm ..... whwre to download the official HTC Froyo?
all RUUs in the link are authenticated by HTC = not custom ROM. Just download the RUU for your region and then upgrade to 2.2 via OTA. Just confirm first that you have AMOLED screen. As i said, most RUUs are not compatible with SLCD screens.
Right, thanks, I'm beginning to understand.
How can I tell if my phone has the amoled screen?
Thanks for your patience!
np
Just a heads up, it might take a while installing ROM on your Desire (30 minutes or so) so dont panic if you see the HTC logo with white background for a while.
OK, I'm getting closer to doing it - maybe at the weekend.
How do I know which type of screen it has?
Hi,
You can follow the procedure in one of the threads here. Also, normally, most phones sold after Aug 2010 are all SLCD screens.
However, I advise you to just sent an email to HTC Customer Service to be 100% sure (this is what i did).
I do believe that if you are upgrading to Froyo then screen type doesn't matter because it has both sets of drivers anyway. Also I think there is a list of official download find in the developers section of this site.;0-)

[Q]Desire HD Latest Software Build?[Q]

Hi there XDA, I've asked a similar question to this before, however since then some things have changed and it's got me wondering, what the hell is going on over at HTC with these software build numbers?
I recently aquired a replacement phone from Orange UK for a Desire HD. The software version on the phone I sent to them was 1.32, however the phone I recieved was running a software version of 1.72, I know for a fact that when I sent that phone to them, there were no updates available, and the thing is, it's a door to door thing. Both handsets are exactly the same, they are both de-branded yet have an Orange logo on the back.
It's sorta fustrating because I know that one of these builds i clearly the one I should have, but I don't know which is which, would someone be kind enough to explain and point me in the right direction of the ROM i should flash? Thanks, and btw im in the UK.

If you want to root etc it would be easier on the 1.32 version but is still easy to do on the 1.72 version, you just use a different approach.
All the answers you need are in the development forum. Don't need to put a link here for you, it's not hard to find. Alternatively, use the link in my sig.
What ROM you SHOULD flash is up to YOU. YOU decide what one YOU like the most.

Your in luck, if you do not want to root, and have a unbranded handset you can have official HTC Gingerbread. An HTC RUU with the upcoming 2.3 release was leaked.
Check THIS thread and download the RUU.exe

I am trying to downgrade to a lower version from Gingerbread for the past hour and each and every time, I am stuck at the screen given below, I have taken out the sdcard formatted it to FAT32, made a goldcard all the steps go fine, even no problem makin a goldcard, but I get stuck at this screen!!!! and it keeps sitting there. I have done all the above steps at least 3 times. I am following the guide by jkoljo .... How do I downgrade???? Anyone
By the way my desire HD is from India and the s/w no is: 2.37.720.3

please be patient waiting at least 24 hours, weekend and there are fewer people

Back to you sir andyharney, if HTC has patched it, then I guess the only option is to twiddle my thumbs and wait for the patch.
andy can I download and update my DHD with the UK Gingerbread RUU..will that help anyways? or maybe can I downgrade to my previous stock rom, I have a PD98IMG.zip file for my previous stock rom (PD98IMG_Ace_hTC_Asia_India_1.84.720.3_Radio_12.28g.60.140f_26.05.05.27_M3_release_175158_signed)
Sadly not, as your current firmware is newer (2.37) than the WWE (2.36) RUU.

It is presumed that the Gingerbreak exploit has been patched up as of 2.37 and we all are waiting for a new exploit, in the meanwhile others have also been reporting the same issue using 2.37, have a look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905003&page=149
And to fully knock yourself out, with the exploit thing go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1100183 and read post #5
Ok, I`ll just waiting. I wish luck to devs.
Thank God!
I am using RCMIX HD Kingdom v 1.2 with Sense 3.0 on my DHD and when I saw I downgrade guide from Gingerbread to get root access, I decided to upgrade to the official 2.3.3 in India. I saw the initial posts in that thread say that the method worked really well.
I had almost made up my mind to try the official update knowing that I can downgrade using the guide, but just before doing that I thought I'd read the more recent posts and guess what I realized the Indian software number 2.37.720.3 cannot be downgraded! Which means no root access and no custom ROMs (at least for now). I immediately changed my mind and didn't upgrade.
Thank God!

New wildfire user needs help!!

Hey everyone...
My friend recently bought this wildfire. Now he wants update to gingerbread. But he doesn't want to root. So can anyone please help me finding a guide to update. An official update would be better...
Thanks....
Not possible, because there isn't any official update out, and, in all probability, there never will be one.
Thanks for the reply...
Then how can I upgrade without rooting? Is there any way?
No there isn't... The latest official update for Wildfire is 2.2 froyo...
However, he can sell the Wildfire and get a Wildfire S
Dun forget to hit "Thanks" coz I know that I helped you
Can you provide me a link for the froyo update?
Check your friend's phone, since he has recently bought it, I am pretty certain it must have Froyo.
But, in any case, it is available here: (Check the one's with the word 'Froyo' in them. The 1 RUU available is WWE 2.22.405.1)

Did you check his phone? Please do that before you flash this, because, if he is already on 2.2.1, then there is absolutely no point in flashing this ROM. (Android version can be checked in Settings > About Phone > Software)
But, to flash an RUU (EXE File), connect the Wildfire to the PC, and simply run the EXE file. It will do the rest. The only prerequisite is that the Sync drivers are installed. This can be found on the SDCard which came bundled with the phone.
Re-iterating it to you again - Check your friends phone. Don't perform this if his phone is already on 2.2.1
Checked it... It's eclair...
Thanks for your help...

Also I wanted to know if anyone of those roms is gingerbread?
Also should I flash a rom of asian version only?

No, as I stated in my first post in this thread, there is no official version of Gingerbread available. The ones starting with 2.x in the filename is a Froyo ROM, and the ones starting with 1.x in the filename is an Eclair ROM.
It's not necessary to flash Asian version. You can get a WWE version as well. (Like 2.22.405.1).
Just one last thing - Has your friend checked for any OTA (Over-The-Air) updates? It can be found in Settings –> About phone –> System software update . In that way, if available, your friends Wildfire will be flashed with an India specific Froyo ROM. If there doesn't exist one, you can go ahead with flashing an RUU

[Q] Orange software 2.17.61.3

Hi there, just about to root my HTC Desire and following the guide it would be useful to have the ability to reset my phone to the current Orange software, should I have to return it. Problem is have looked here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695667
but cannot find my version of the software should I need it in the future?
Really hoping this isnt a stupid question, confused cos' the guide states that the 3rd octet should contain 3 numerics and mine contains 2 (61 in this case)
full revisions are listed below but guess I am looking for version 2.17.61.3?
Android Ver 2.2
Baseband 32.48.00.32U_5.10.05.30
Kernel 2.6.32.15-g29e526b
[email protected]#1
Build 2.17.61.3 CL2774424 release-keys
Software 2.17.61.3
Browser Webkit 3.1
Many thanks in advance for your help
you need to create a gold card i guess, pls google it
im also on orange, and they havent released their RUU's so you wont be able to return to original state. You could just flash one of the official HTC ones and then send it back.. If you are with orangecare insurance you dont need to worry, if there is a problem and it needs sending back, the phone will be replaced on your doorstep and orange wont look at the phone for a while
Thanks for your replies - I am glad its not me having read the guide closely, the phone is under Orangecare so will take your advice above. Many thanks again.
Very welcome! glad I could help
