[Q] Internet connection to smartphone via wired access? - General Accessories

Hello,
of course my HTC HD2 is able to connect to the internet by GPRS & UMTS, but I only have a corresponding data package in my home country. In every foreign country I would pay extra. Anyhow, most hotels provide free internet but sadly not always wireless... sometimes only a LAN cable is available. But how could I use the wired internet access with my smartphone which “only” supports all possible wireless connection types?
If I am informed correctly Apple’s AirPort Express would do the job - with that thing I could plug-in the hotel’s LAN cable and share the internet by W-LAN. Even as this device is small and portable, it can do much more which I do not need... and it currently costs about 84 euro - that's the main problem, it’s expensive.
So basically I have two questions... would the AirPort Express really perform the required job (use a hotel provided LAN to create a WiFi for accessing the internet by smartphone) and more importantly are there alternative devices available for less money which could achieve what I am looking for?
Maybe you can help me with a brilliant idea to solve my problem...
Regards,
DW!

I'm not exactly sure why you wouldnt just use any old router....they cost next to nothing.

That might be right, but it's not really portable... I would like to use something small and fancy maybe like the Apple thing reduced to the funtion I need for let's say 20 bucks...

I suffered the same problem before, hmmmmm.

I doubt you'll find anything for less than 60 unless its used. Just Simple access point is all you need. On amazon.com they have used linksys WAP54G
access points for 18 us dollars...

A smaller router will with out question cost more, but I am sure one that is not apple will cost more. Try amazon and see what comes up.

There are small stylish cheap routers out there to suit your needs.
P.S.: Look for Asus WL-330gE

Thanks for all your feedback... I found at amazon via the Asus a "LogiLink Wireless LAN Mini AP Router" (LogiLink® WL0083) for only 21,37 EUR... acc. to the reviews this gadget should do exactly what I need... nothing more but nothing less... I ordered it - let's see

[RELEASE]Slingplayer for Mobile 1.5

Good Morning Everyone,
This morning Sling released their updated for the Slingplayer PPC client. This fully support WM6 and I have been using it the last 3 weeks.
http://www.slingmedia.com/mobile
Man I want to buy a slingbox so bad...
They are soooooo Cool!
Sweet deal on the Pro here:
http://www.slingmedia.com/nhlspecialoffer/
i think i am going to get a slingbox before football season and was wondering which is the cheapest but best. I the old 1st gen model any good. I dont need hd or anything just connect to my coax from my cable company. no cable box either. i am sorry if this looks like I am rambling i have been up since 1 am CDT
A classic unit would work fine. May be hard to find a brand new one with the exception of a few retailers or online avenues.
is the classic better than the tuner model? i am only going to use it on my mobile phone and maybe a Vista computer.

The classic has a built-in tuner and one AV input. I have one and it works great. I just got the Pro and it's super nice also
You can't beat the Sling on the 8525, it's really sweet. On WiFi you can get almost 4 straight hours of viewing, not bad at all!
I have had it for a while. I am having problems with it connecting to my Hermes? B4 flashing WM6 it worked fine, but now it says "Unable to connect to Slingbox!" I have it on my PC as well and it still works? Also my connection is 3G with all bars full? Any suggestions? (Other than that issue this is really sweet)
I had this problem, but it turned out to be a coincidence with switching to a new router (Netgear). My 8525 wouldn't connect, PC on the home LAN worked fine. Then I tested the PC from the "outside internet" and it wouldn't connect either. Turned out to be router settings, port forwarding. I then manually went thru the sling setup and defined fixed IP and ports, then set the router accordingly. Everything connects immediately now both inside and via wireless EDGE/3G.

Decent Bluetooth USB dongle for A2DP

I'm looking for a reasonably priced, short-to-medium range Bluetooth dongle for my PC. It seems there are hundreds, nay, thousands of offerings on fleabay, Amazon, you name it.
What I've gathered is a lot of them have CSR Bluecore chipsets. Or falsely identify themselves as such. The second thing I've gathered is that lots of them are just the hardware, with no software (or include crap like BlueSoleil, or trial versions).
I want to use the device with a pair of A2DP stereo headphones, and possibly other stuff like OBEX, whatever else it might support.
I'm really in the dark here -- it looks like a crapshoot. When you Google for reviews, it's the usual drivel. When I search the forums here, there are some rather old posts (2004?!) but nothing I see that's relevant.
Does anyone have a good experience with a $20 or less Bluetooth 2.0 EDR dongle for USB? If so, please let me know! Thanks in advance.
This is the one I have. You can also look into this one.

Those are exactly the form factors I've been looking at. Small enough to just pop into a USB port and look integrated with the machine. Though I worry that small = less powerful = compromise.
What does it enumerates itself as, a CSR chipset? I'm assuming you got it working with A2DP okay. I looked at their product page and it says it's driverless... unless you want to use A2DP, in which case they provide a driver.
It's strange that the one withouta driver CD is more expensive -- wonder if that means it's a more capable/more expensive chipset?
The latest bluesoleil is very good. Try the trial, as I have found it gives complete functionality to the cheapest of dongles.
I would get a newer one which used broadcom software
ms is missing a lot of profiles
toshiba seems unstable
never messed with other stacks

Reverse Tether?

Is it possible to use my computers internet when plugged into the USB? At work I don't get very good signal strength and would love tobe able to use the 25mbit fiber on my EVO.
On a Mac you can use internet connection sharing under Sharing in the System Preferences. The connection will be via WiFi though, not USB.
Not sure about on a Windows machine. Doesn't your work have WiFi? If not you could always bring your own router and have it not broadcast its SSID.
Yeah we do have WiFi but I get poor signal down in the "dungeon" where I work, and it's only on a T-1 a select few of us have access to the 25mbit connection, and my boss wouldn't look too kindly on me putting a wifi router on it.

I found lots of other threads with people asking this question all over the internet. I guess it's not possible right now. I ended up buying one of these:

For anyone on the market, any router that supports DD-WRT can be configured to be extremely flexible.
I think I even saw a Wireless-N for like $20-30 on NewEgg.com

True, but this one is nice and portable. I run 2 DD-WRT routers at home (one works as a wireless bridge for my Xbox360, BluRay Player, DVR and HTPC), but neither of them are nice small and compact like this is.

If you are plugging this into your work's network and extending it over WiFi, you had better make sure that you have passed this by your IT department first. Pulling a stunt like this at my place of business will get you fired on the spot unless you are really, REALLY lucky...

USB to LAN for S2

Hi guys,
i am in the need of having a lan port on my S2. i found these
http://www.hitechleague.com/android-tablets-accessories/usb-2-0-ethernet-adapter-rj-45
and
http://www.euogo.com/usb-lan-adapte...to-rj45-adapter-for-android-tablets_p420.html
but i don't know if they are going to work. Anyone have any opinions on this?
Interested too!
Well I've read somewhere that in theory it is possible. The only problem is you'd have to write a driver for the phone which isn't very easy.
Maybe you already know it, but if you have a laptop available you can share the lan connection via wifi with Connectify.
If you have windows 7 (vista I'm not sure of) you don't even have to use a third party program. But your wireless card should support packet injection. Sadly enough mine doesn't.
Nevertheless LAN to USB can be useful. A few weeks ago I was staying in a hotel that said it had wifi. But it didn't only via cable. I only brought my phone. So there I was alone in an alley hogging of somebodies wifi in the rain trying to congratulate my girlfriend on here graduation.
I'm really looking into a travel router now. D-link's dap 1350 for example.

I only use it to stream music from my Netbook which is running iTunes but I believe it will act as a wifi hotspot and is not much bigger than a mains adaptor. If you plug it into the network then it should pick up an IP and if you have configured it at home then it will act as a normal wifi router.

IMO, Those are 2 different things. I don't have any serious buffering issues on my ftvs or my rpi but that has a lot to do with your internet speeds. My advanced settings are untouched but my internet is fast. Of course buffering is inevitable. If the server it's coming from is slow it doesn't matter how fast your speeds are or what device you have.
Rpi is a computer with many potential functions but it lacks netflix, amazon and other streaming apps. So if you want an easy to setup kodi experience with netflix and prime I'd just buy the stick. Plus if this is your first rpi you'll need extra accessories so that 35 bucks turns into 50 or more real fast.

OK. So you are taking cost into account. I have RPI b+ but heard the new one ,version 2, is very fast (almost as fast as AFTV console.)
Other factors--1. If you can't use Ethernet, you'll need a good WiFi adapter
2. If your TV has cec support you'll be able to use TV remote, otherwise you'll need to buy flirc or other.
My take is that RPI is much better than ftvs. But ease of use, lack of Netflix and other streaming services, and extra equipment will make it a more complex decision. On the other hand, you'll be able to do more with RPI than an unrooted stick. So its really a matter of what your needs are & what you want to spend. Personally, if the cost was equal I'd go for RPI but then I believe I'd need something like play on to get those streaming services.
I'd have more fun with RPI but for practical reasons I'd probably buy the stick.

No buffering issues that I'm aware of. If you have issues you need to create advanced settings to adjust it. Its all about your network. And because both stick and RPI 2 have same amount of ram, they will probably behave the same on your network.

This is the fire TV forum so youll get info related to that. I'd do a little more research on RPI to see if it meets your needs.
But the concern you had about buffering isn't really an issue on stick as far as I know. Buffering is a universal issue. Google "buffering" and insert the name of any device and I'll bet someone complained about it. Take a look at this. It might be helpful for whichever one you buy.

Well there's a sale in the US, as of yesterday. Many stores carrying them for around $24 bucks (but not sure if that will benefit you in your part of the world.) If all your looking for is a good kodi experience with live tv+netflix I think the stick will be a good choice. And if ethernet is NOT an option, I really think you'll have less headaches and spend less money if you buy stick. The RPI needs a good wifi adapter not included.
