So, who have had time to look at the UI Design and Interaction Guide? I see everyone's busy discussing and defining multitasking, but isn't this newly released document the most interesting thing to have come out of Mix so far? I think.
I've just skimmed through it but first of all I love that Microsoft FINALLY provied a sleek GUI framework out of the box for app development! Of course, it was expected with Silverlight support and all, but it's nice to get it confirmed. I'm talking about stuff such as
-Gesture support
-Finger friendly controls
-Smooth scrolling panels
I know all these things have been possible before, but not with ease. Coming from the .NET CF world, I've had to spend a lot of time enabling such featurse in my apps. And they're not as slick as I expect them to be in WP7.
The UI is what most needed improvement for the apps on Windows Phones to be competitive with iPhone apps. This will lower the threshold for developers to create smooth, impressive apps. This will increase competitiveness for Windows Phones, which in turn will benefit us, the developers - enlarging our market.
Agree? ..or are most guys at this not that concerned with monetizing on their apps?
I've downloaded it but not had chance to look through yet as I'm at work.
Whilst I'm pretty unsure still about the whole marketplace-only, no FS support stuff, I am quite excited about the new development stuff. Like you say, nice interface controls will be there ready to use instead of having to rely on hacks and third party stuff to achieve something approaching half-decent.
I'm glad this is available already, the more time the better, and it makes sense really as MS will want their appstore pretty well populated at launch to compete with iPhone and Android.

I did. Found out that there are no file open/save controls. Immediately realized that until a jailbreak comes out there's no way I'm buying a WP7S phone, despite the many things I love about this new OS.
Only 4 "accent colors" plus 1 manufacturer color.
The accent colors are ORANGE, RED, BLUE and GREEN.
Why 4? Why cant the user change it from color palette selection?
I would love to use BLACK or DARK BLUE or blue grey ala iPhone !
I just cannot understand this accent color limitation
if found something interesting in the guide. a windows mobile 7 handy have same number of buttons as a hd2 .
1. Power/Sleep
2. Volume
3. Screen
4. Camera
5. Back
6. Start
7. Search
So, the only difference is the layout.
It's a very valuable document, thanks.
We'd like Microsoft deliver more samples to provide a sort of a framework with frequently used patterns.
In any case Silverlight applications look fantastic.

What is your goal here? Do you want to store data for the App or are you trying to write a FileExplorer app?

I need file storage as a user, not as a developer. Anyone who tried to transfer files to the iPhone for third party programs knows it's a PITA.
Microsoft is simply trying to protect you from yourself and the dangers of unauthorized text files and colors.

While lack of colours seems weird, I'm sure it could be easily implemented.
Less features? Laughable, considering what WM6 is.

Yea just like other other weird things that could be easily implemented, like multitasking, cut & paste, file system access, and having a user accessible SD card slot.
I don't know if you saw the leaked specsheets for the Dell Lightning, but that thing comes with an 8GB miniSD card, user-upgradable.
Yes, it is upgradeable if you don't mind voiding your warranty and tearing apart your entire phone. On the plus side however, removing the battery cover on my Rhodium to get access to the SD slot doesn't seem quite as annoying anymore.

i personally would like a decent smooth (few windows mobile games have what i call a playable framerate) doodle jump like game. theres one going around recently called boing (i think) but its largely unfinished.
How about a speed camera application.
One similar to "CAMERAWARE" would be good, search google for CAMARAWARE.
Please i would like to see Vexed game remake on ppc with beter animation and so on...
How about a car valuation app, that be cool for the right ppl
You could make me a World of Minecraft Client for WinMo
AFAIK there isnt one and I'm hopelessly addicted to that game
edit: its java based so I could quite likely be wrong about there not already being one for winmo
How about making an application to test the polarity of a speaker. I have the on phase off phase test tone but need a software to tell it apart.
Thank you all for your ideas - much appreciated.
I'm not too sure yet which one I will be working on first - I will look through them this evening and make my mind up
Keep them coming!
Dude, I will drink a beer in your name if you make me a probably simple app./fix. I would love if you could somehow get the Audio Booster to work without putting a 3,5 jack in the phone. I use a bluetooth headset and i would love to run the Audio Booster over bluetooth.. music would sound so much better!! can you make this happen
t-pain/autotune app would be funny like iphone has
please make a last.fm client/programme.... I really miss this and it's not quite as good streaming it through skyfire
game wise - i'd love to see a bombjack game made with proper controls for WVGA - have a look at bombjack on MAME
iphone type app.... how about the magnifer glass app using the phones camera? (always did like that one)
Tower defense games are a lot of fun.
I'd also love to see an app that would allow me to easily create and manage playlists for music player apps like Slide2Play or Windows Media. Although if this already exists someone please let me know!
Once again thank you everyone, I will try my absoulute best to complete all these apps/games for you at sometime.
It won't be long now before I pick a app and build it - PROMISE!

Eye catch apps
Hello Dude so i have alot of Ideas but i can`t do them so here is what APPS/GAMES we need for FUN and etc.
1st. I already saw APP called BigBrother so what doing this application is to track your friends by the GSM Number and for that reason use the GPS google Maps for example BUT here is the funny thing that of course the program can`t track your friends by the number but can track you.. so when you are in a coffe with friends you can say hey i always know where are you, because i can track you by your number.. then they of course will say its not posible.. OK show them.. Just open the APP and simple write the Number of your friend that don`t believe you after few seconds the Exact Location will be displayed WOW.. the APP show the location of your device, but your friends don`t have from where to know this.. and for example when they are close to you i mean you are with the in the same place ... its looking like you really can track them anytime anywhere..
If app like this is made will be awesome, just to have a Nice finger friendly Interface and to look Serious like a Serious TRacking SPY Application.
2nd We need program who work with Fake Finger Prints... so i will give you example of one app you can create whatever you want.. using the methoud of visual apperiance..
Let we have something like Lock Screen with Finger Print Scaner.. of course this is not posible for real but who know this So for example your screen is locked.. when you wake up the device in the Center of your Screen will appear a square or some kind of button in that place you need to put your finger so this will have a delay of few seconds for example 3 seconds delay, because need to look like your finger get scaned ..
After you put your finger in this place the app will react on touch and will be writen SCANING PLEASE WAIT... after 3 seconds will appear a on the same place where was writen this SCANIN Stuff will apear APROVED or something like this and will appear a real Finger Print so nobody will know that this is not your real finger print..
With FInger Print Scaners can be done alot of super good visual apps to catch eyes and your friends or some iPhone fans to be really crazy with that.. this was just example of course.
3rd the Last but maybe the Best is Morphing the Voice in call, there already have app that can Morph your voice but you just can record a Morphed Voice and is very buggy for what im talking is a Morphing Your voice in real Time during Phone CALL, this will be extremaly good Software and thousend of peoples will NEED IT.
Imagine if you can call someone and to Morph your voice like you are Older, younger or Even Women LOL... this is really a Serious Software i know that can be made with sure just nobody take it serious to do something like this. Like i say now already have Soft Like this for WindowsMobile but its a BAD and its not integrated with the Phone Calls so you just can Morph your Voice for FUN not in a CALL and also there are just few samples to choice like Robot voice etc witch are bad so.. the Morphing voice is all from the Dicibels and etc if we have Soft like this intergrated to work in CALL and you can add into the Menu option like Equalizer with this methood everyone can do whatever settings he like and to make unique Morphed Voice from a Yuonger Girl/Guy to a Older almost everything.
The APP must to beLight not so visual good aperience need to work Faster and Smooth this is something that we really NEED and totaly will break all Other Devices and Apps.
4. Here already have similar apps like this but none of them is finger friendly and with good quality Sound so im talking about a Brain Wave Machine the app must to be with Some good interface finger friendly like a Music Player and to contain only the Brain wave Tones im speaking about ISOTRONIC tones because they are much better and they are the best from all Brain tones so in the Market already have with Binaural Beats but the Isochronic Tones are the best of the best, i can help you by provide you over 50 Diferent and Hight Quality Isotronic Sounds for diferent kind of MODS like from Euphoria, deep meditaion sleep, Chakra Balancing, and alot alot alot more just to integrate in that Player so just simple you need to start the APP and choice what kind of SOUND YOU want.
If you don`t know for what im talking about and the peoples wonder what this sound are here is some review for all of you.
Binaural Beats :
Sine wave generators are used to create two separate frequency waves which are introduced to each ear independently.
The brain reacts by creating a third tone which is the difference between the two. This allows the brain to directly tune into a frequency
that the ear cannot hear! The entire range of Alpha and Theta frequencies (between 5-12 Hz) have been tested extensively in several studies.
It was concluded that a specific combination of frequencies consistently caused a Shift In Consciousness!
Monaural Beats:
This technology uses two tones of equal intensity which result in a crisp and clean sound. Unlike Binaural Beats, Monaural beats are easier
on your brain because there is no need to balance the tones and your mind does not need adjusting time. Monaural Beats use a single tone that
pulses on and off in specific patterns, which is tuned specifically for the frequencies that produce the desired effect.
Isochronic Tones:
If you are looking for the most effective type of brainwave entrainment, Isochronic Tones are the way to go. Isochronic Tones also use equal intensity
tones, but the pulse speed is greater, causing the brain to synchronize with the rhythm. In 1999, Thomas Budzynski Ph.D. published a case in the
Journal of Neurotherapy which showed that a group of 8 college students increased their GPA with the use of audio brainwave stimulation,
and their GPA continued to increase even after the experiment was finished!
P.S i can play the sounds now without a problem with any Player on my Blackstone but will be even easy and beter they to be integrated in one single APP and you don`t need to search them everytime you wana listen. If you like the idea let me know i can provide all the tones for free. Till now NO SOFT like this is avalible, i mean with the best ISOTRONIC SOUNDS
I have alot more ideas so if you ask for more will write
Performance Computer Using G-Sensor
I believe it would be very fine if you could develop an application for calculating Distance/Travel, Speed and acceleration by using G-sensor. all the similar available application do this job via GPS, not G-sensor.
The hypothesis is easy. Acceleration data are available through G-sensor, then by integrating these data, velocity can be found, and by once more integration from velocity values, distance can be calculated.
Such application is very useful for engineers, and I'm sure soon after developing, it could be commercialized.
Minilyrics-like app
hello!
There is none lyrics app like Minilyrics for WM. The font is customizable, and easy for the eyes to read, the skin is great...but...but the Minilyrics buttons are super small! And the playlist is almost imposible to read and click unless u're using stylus! They seem doesnt want to upgrade the app since last year for WVGA resolution. I have to assign qwerty button to replace the play, stop etc buttons which are so small.
I love to sing along with the song, who doesnt? kareoke in the car, anyone?

I would be shocked if they don't. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if none of these are even in the final build. This is a beta emulator. Content like ring tones and alarms are extremely easy to add at the last second and often is so that they can keep it close to the vest.
Yes sure, i know but i was surprised when i heard these ringtones so i underline it
They're all from the same instrument.
I think these are just here for demonstration purposes. MS should know the deep hole the need to climb out of, and how important that each element of their new platform need to be, down to the most insignificant alarm sound.

thx,but it sounds all the same.haha

lol, it sounded like 4 keys of the piano just played in different orders. In that case, we'd have 24 alerts/ringtones.
Windows Phone 7 Key press sounds

It is this soft ware report
Windows Mobile music lovers may well remember an excellent but quirky music program for Windows Mobile, called 40iPlay. It was characterised by an excellentsound quality and some usefulfeatures. Unfortunately it ceased to be supported from WM5 SP2 onwards.
Browsing around the Marketplace yesterday, I found a new music player called Phantasm MP , written byCornel Huth, the developer of40iPlay.
As it is only £7.19 (as opposed to $40 the original cost) I risked all and boughtit! Happily, once up and running, the sound quality isexcellent and I've no regrets.
It's not all sweetness and light at present however- setup can be an ordeal to saythe least, as the Marketplacedownload does not include thecomprehensive user guide available from the developer's main site. Initially my copy would not index my music folder, causing repeated lockups, butafter some advice from the developer I traced this to a dodgy music file, since when it has been fine.
Navigation on a capacitive screen needs practice as well, but again, the user guide helps!
One remaining glitch is that the program doesn't seem to be able to keep the device awake, so it will go into standby without sound according to user settings. I've reported this to the developer. Maybe there's something else in the settings that can be tweaked! Fixed: See post 4 for the reason for this!
I'll give it a few days, thenmaybe do a 'Brief Review' butif anyone is interested, the user guide is Here and some screenshots of both Windows and Windows Mobile versions Here !
user fell
Excellent ! - i tried 40iplayon my Orbit2 and it sounded very good indeed by virtue ofbeing able to tweak the soundstage via reverb to givea big sound.
I now use the SRS WOW HD add-on which has a similar configurable 3d effect tho i will definately have a punt at Phantasm for only £7.
The screenshot reminds me of Winamp from a few years back!
no one can help me?
Hey all, I saw a couple threads on this, but I found this and thought that it would clear up some of the confusion for making custom ringtones on a NON-Dev unlocked version of Mango.
http://windowsphonesecrets.com/2011/06/28/custom-ringtone-support-in-mango-explained/
I used Audacity and the lame_enc.dll file to make a short ringtone mp3 and then moved it to my phone in the newer version of Zune. After that, I right-clicked on the file and went to edit and manually changed the genre to "Ringtone" (yes, with a capital 'R'). From that point, it did NOT show up in my music on my phone but appeared under the word "Custom" in my ringtone selection. This was actually relatively painless and pretty cool. Hope this tutorial helps people using the Non-Dev Unlocked Mango.
Red.
Samsung Focus
Mango Beta2 Non Dev Unlocked
All thanks to XDA as usual.
A perhaps easier way than using some software to cut the MP3 would be to simply use a webbased service like http://cutmp3.net/
Most people won't need the additional capabilities of audacity and for a few files this non-install version will do.

Bye Android fanboy, you wont be missed.
If you like the phone fine but these type of comments...just go away
May I make a suggestion for you ? Go to your local craigslist, list your phone for sale or trade, get a Android phone and stop trolling the WIndows Phone 7 areas...
Create ringtones on Mango:
Create your own ringtones so you can match your jingle to your mood, or match just the right tune to your contacts. Just make sure the audio file is:
• In MP3 or WMA format.
• Less than 40 seconds.
• Less than 1 MB.
To make any file that fits these criteria into a ringtone on a PC, all you have to do is assign it the genre of "ringtone" in the Zune software. If you don't have the Zune software on your computer, see Install the Zune software.
To create a ringtone using the Zune software
1 Open the Zune software and find the file you want to turn into a ringtone.
2 Right-click the file, and then click Edit.
3 In the GENRE list, click or type Ringtone, then click OK.
4 Connect your phone to your computer using a cable, and then sync the file to your phone
Wish Microsoft would have added custom ringtones when they first released the OS. Simple mishaps like this has caused major blows to this platform in my point of view. I like the fluidity and overall look of WP7 but its lacking essential features. So I bound to head back to android or WM6.5.
That capability existed in the original release of software - it was briefly documented on the earliest versions of the Windows Phone manual posted on the AT&T site, however, for whatever reason it was not available to users in the released version of the phones. No info whether that was due to Microsoft changing their mind, or the carriers optioning that feature out.
...and I clearly need to change my .sig - it is soooo out of date!

Builtin as ringtones, MAY be possible but they have to be in WMA format. You'll have to create a WMA, copy it to the ISOStore of one of the apps on the phone using Windows Phone Power Tools then use WP7 Root Tools 0.7 to copy it to the \Windows directory. From there you'll have to rename one of the Alert-xx.wma files to something else and rename your wma to Alert-xx.wma. It should work. I changed my Alert-06 for my e-mail to be the old "You've Got mail" sound from AOL
Alternatively, use the Advanced Config for WP7 Mango tool (on TouchXperience). Requires interop-unlock, of course, but provides a nice interface that lets you set the registry keys controlling various sounds to whatever sound files you have installed.
The only catch is that if you open the Sound control panel, it'll reset to some default. If you rename an alert file and then copy the file that you want to use into the name of the renamed file (using WP7 Root Tools, TouchXplorer, or a provxml file) then you can use the control panel directly.
That one didn't work for me (HTC Trophy) - The Text Message Sound is then Set to "None" and I dont get any Sound
Did you open the control panel after running Advanced Config, like I specifically said not to do lest your changes be reset to defaults?
No, there wasn't any tone before I went to the controlpanel. That was the reason why I went there later
