[Q] dInc CW Recovery, Cant Select Options - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, I was using CM7 RC4, getting terrible battery life, and wanted to change roms. Problem was, when I started up into Clockwork Recovery, I could not select anything from the menu. I could scroll, but the power button only dimmed the screen, and the trackpad didn't do anything.
So I did a complete wipe, unrooted back to 2.2, etc. Now, I used unrevoked to Re-Root the phone, successfully. I start up into CW Recovery again, and same issue.
So now, I'm stuck with using the "Stock" incredible rom, although I am rooted, and have an nonfunctional clockwork recovery.
I want to be able to install roms. Any ideas?

The trackpad doesn't actually select the item when you click it? Does it work outside of recovery? That would be odd if it just stopped working..

Yeah, does it work outside of recovery? If not it may be a hardware problem. If it does work, you could give AmonRA a try.

The trackpad works to move through the menu, but can't select anything. As for the track"ball" (the center button) working, I've never used it for anything other than rooting my phone for the first time, and it worked then. I don't have any applications that can test out to see if it can "click", so I'm not sure

actually I've tried using the trackpad button in every way i can think of, even booting with the trackpad button held down, and got nothing. Maybe the button itself is done for.
I have no idea if this is hardware based or what...any thoughts?

Just try to select something outside of recovery with the trackpad, if it still doesn't work then it sounds like its a hardware issue.

Doesn't the camera app with the DInc require you to use the trackpad to "click" to take a picture? I think that's the only time I use my trackpad outside of recovery

I'm in a similar boat. My trackpad has stopped working and I'm stuck without being able to move forward in the menus of Clockworkmod.

Not exactly. If you're using an Evo/AOSP camera, you'll be able to take pictures using the on-screen button.

I've managed to compile a custom version of Clockworkmod v4.0.1.4 which uses the power button as the select button. Here's the zip.

Clockwork recovery options don't work (goes to black screen) SOLVED

Wondering if anyone could help with my problem. I was trying to flash the new market apk, but when I reload into recovery, none of the recovery options work. It will go to a black screen, then if I press power again, it will return to the clockwork recovery menu. To top things off, because it wipes my ROM when I initiate the bootloader (is this a regular thing? it has always happened to me since I've rooted), it tries to load the stock ROM then fails to load all the way. Any help would be appreciated. I tried deleting esprimg.zip as was suggested in someone else's thread, but that didn't do anything. Thanks in advance.
EDIT:
I'm an idiot, apparently. For some reason, you're supposed to click on the trackpad to verify when you're in clockwork recovery. Was that always the case?

As for wiping when booting into hboot, delete anything that's ESPRIMG.zip or .nbh. I don't know why that wouldn't have fixed it.
For the rest, in clockwork, the trackpad is used for selection, not the power button. You can still use the volume keys for selection, in addition to the trackpad, but you have to push the track pad in to actually select the highlighted option.

I just figured it out before I read this. Thank you for the quick response though, I really appreciate it. This would have been the perfect solution if I didn't figure it out. I don't know why I thought that it was power for selecting on clockwork as well. Thanks so much!

No problem, yeah lots of people make that mistake at first, since stock recovery uses the power button. Did you get the whole wiping when booting into hboot fixed though?

Not really. I guess a workaround for now is to just boot straight into recovery when I need to flash a zip (through ROM manager), and since I deleted esprimg.zip, it won't try to load it and wipe when I do go into the bootloader.

I had that problem once when my battery came out in the middle of a ROM flash. It wouldn't even boot into hboot, it went straight to recovery on every boot until I flashed a ROM again.

[Q] Start bootmenue without volume down button

Hello folks,
since two days I can't use my desire properly anymore. Wifi had some issues, volume buttons sometimes stopped working and the phone rebooted itself. The phone was rooted with unrevoked ans S-OFF. I thought that maybe the software was damaged so I decided to reinstall, but this time with the original RUU.
I used this one: RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.09.405.8_Radio_32.43.00.32U_5.09.00.20_release_140022_signed
After installing, the phone got in a reboot loop. Now, I cant get into the bootmenu because the volume down button doesn't work. Is there any other possibility to get into the bootmenu?

Power+back button. It will launch into fastboot menu I think. From there click hboot. (It might also be that it launches into hboot and you click fastboot. Not too sure). It's the way I used when my vol buttons are unresponsive.

[Q] Alternative methods of accessing Recovery?

My Xperia Play has had a few problems out of the box, mainly that when I switch it on there is no boot animation, just a black screen. This means I can't access Recovery through the normal method of holding down on the volume or the back button etc. I've installed CWM through the CWM Xperia installer so I know it's there. I also ran the Auto-Magic Nandroid through that app, which caused my screen to go black (as it does whenever I choose to reboot through an app). When I looked on my SD card though there is now a Nandroid folder, so it's probable that the device does go into Recovery; I just can't see it.
So my question is this; is there any other way of getting my phone into Recovery so I can install some sweet, delicious custom ROMs? Maybe through ADB or similar? Or is it possible to install a ROM via another method?
Any help at all would be appreciated!!
If it wasn't working right right out of the box, I would have sent it back.
Can't you boot into recovery from the CWM-installer app?

Sadly that wasn't an option, it was the only one they had and I wasn't about to send it back for another type of phone, I've wanted this thing for ages
I've just clicked that option in the app and it's just rebooted the phone normally.

Turn on the phone, and when you see the notification light turn blue, press volume down for the locked bootloader cwm, or the back button for the one in DooMKernel.
Sent from a Galaxy far, far away
I've not yet tried installing DooMKernel, I'm worried that if I can't get into the normal recovery in won't be able to get into that one, then I'll be stuck with a boot looping phone.
Pressing down on volume on the blue led comes on doesn't seem to do much, simply stops the boot process from completing fully. I left the phone for 5 mins and got nothing. Pressing the power button again started the boot process again and it loaded up normally (minus any animations of ciurse)
It seems like stuff is happening, but I just can't see it. I doubt this is a hardware fault as the screen works perfectly all other times, so what the heck could it be!?
The recovery in DooMKernel is already built in, so it's different than using the Xperia CWM installer. By the way, the back button will get you into DooMKernel's recovery.
I'll give it a try and see what happens. Thanks for the advice guys!

[Q] Booting phone without the power button

Hey guys, back with a new problem.
So the wife has been having issues with her power button for a while now, and its getting to the point where it is pretty much intolerable. Last time she killed her battery it took almost a half hour of button mashing to get her phone to boot back up, and I'm worried that next time she kills the battery, I wont be able to get it to boot again.
Does anyone know a way to boot the G2/Desire Z without a working power button (other than disassembling the phone and shorting the contacts in the power button)?
Her contract is up next month, but I'm sure she'll drop it, kill the battery, or have to do a battery pull between now and then, so any help is appreciated!
I'm not sure but I think I had my g2 powered down and pluged it into my laptop and it booted.
Sent from my G2 running the random rom of the day.
like the above mentioned, there was a flaw in one of the clockwork recoveries (can't recall the version off hand) that when the phone was powered off and you plugged it in it would automaticaly turn on. for you this wouldn't be a flaw so search the forum for someone complaining about this and just install that recovery. of course you will have to be rooted first if you aren't already

I had that booting issue with the Clockwork Mod touch recovery for our phones. Guess it can be helpful in this situation. This is the thread with recovery info and this is how to flash recovery.
Not sure if the files linked to in our recovery thread still work but here is link to CWM-Touch 5.8.1.0

Firstly, I think you mean Andromadus Mimicry, not mimistry
Secondly, trackpad wake/unlock is a feature in most custom roms.
Thirdly, wake is completely different to booting, which is what the question was about. A (maybe somewhat vague) analogy would be, you've lost the ignition key for your car, and you're trying to start the engine by shifting to first gear.

I think the version you're looking for is Clockworkmod 3.0.0.5, which should be available in the Rom Manager app (under flash older/other recovery). can't find a working link for the img itself.

is it possible to flash if my volume button is spoilt?

as per topic, wondering if i can flash a rom if my volume button is spoilt?
my htc suddenly behaved weirdly and screen sporadically seems to keep pressing the back button (or at least it keeps backing when i am in some app) , then freeze. i have to press power button to off, wait a while and on it and it's back to normal, and after some time, reverts to freezing. not sure if it's because i force close apps too much tho. so i thought maybe i could try flashing a new rom. but my volume button isn't working so is it still possible to flash?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA
If you are s-on you would need to first fix your volume botton(s) before trying to root your device. If you don't it would just jam you up. There are several threads on ways to fix your volume buttons.
If you are already rooted and have flashed roms before (which is not stated, thus unlickly), you could flash a touch recovery. However, I am unsure if the volume buttons could be used or are used in the touch version (which I believe it is) and since they are stuck, the button, it could act up on you.
Sent from a dream.
1. Repair your volume button (jam it in there or glue it in)
2. Root using AAHK (I'll post instructions later, out at the moment)
3. Flash 4EXT Touch Recovery
4. Profit??

hmm, i could press the up volume long time ago if i press it hard enough, but it's all unresponsive now. gone as far as unscrewing the 2 screws at the batt area and unsure how to proceed with that volume knocker at the side below the batt compartment. so i stopped at that that time.
It's just that this sudden sporadic backing /screen freeze seems more of a bother so i thought perhaps i should try flashing, or should i try a factory reset?

yup, tried prising then so the lower part seems abit jutting out; the most it can do is slide a little up and down lol. there wasn't much info on this vol thingy and i saw one vid on disassembling the htc which kinda skims through this part and made it looked so easy (but i had no freaking idea what he did after unscrewing the screws) so i sorta left it as that and used a volume app instead
so I'm rooted and able to use the 4ext? the only 4ext i found in google play was the one i needed to pay but there was a link to the site where i could grab the free one though. supposedly if i didn't fix the volume button, am i able to use this to flash?

Yeah just grab the free one and flash the 4EXT Recovery. Trust me you'll like it much better. Easier to use, more fluid and doesn't require the volume rocker for use

Do you have ADB? You don't really need the Volume button if you're already rooted and s-off to flash ROMs.
Flash a recovery like 4EXT or even CWM Touch. 4EXT is better though. You can flash 4EXT through the app in the play store and for CWM Touch you can get it here.
If you do decide to go for CWM Touch, you'll have to flash it via fastboot. Read the forums on how to do that or let me know I'll post it later if you can't find anything.
After you flash a recovery and get ADB and HTC Sync on your system. Just use the command "adb reboot recovery" to reboot the device straight to recovery without having to press the volume button.
I've been surviving without the volume down button for a long time now. And I regularly flash stuff so I can say it's not that big a deal. It is kinda living on the edge.. But ADB always helps me out.
tks i should try the ext recovery later.
phone's acting up and the top menu icon keeps interchanging between the icons and date by itself more intermittently.
for the wipe, i just check all of the options? and it'll bring me back to the recovery menu when done?

Ohh,thanks
Hm nope,my power button doesn't show the boot into recovery option .
My screen was acting up so bad that
I wasn't able to do anything for a while and I thought it was a hardware issue so I went to do a factory reset instead to see if it'll be alright. But it still freezes the screen sometimes, more obvious when typing and it either jumps about /freezes. I guess it's the display issue or digitizer issue then ?
Sent from my Desire HD using xda app-developers app
Happens to me to. Maybe rom related? I just jump to lockscreen by hitting the power button and unlocking gets me out of the freezing or acting up. Try this. Open a command window on your PC. Get to adb devices and prepare an adb reboot recovery command. Don't press enter yet. Remove the battery and reinsert it. Start the phone and quickly connect your phone to PC. You'll hear the connection sound, as you hear this , start executing the command window . The phone will boot into recovery. There you could flash ice cold sandwich which hast the boot into recovery option .
Edit: You could also download this to enter recovery.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.siriusapplications.quickboot
Also suggest you flash 4ext recovery.

I could actually still move around after my factory reset. So can probably reinstall the 4ext to flash but doesn't seem to be Rom related since I had this arhd for more than half a year and this freezing suddenly occured a few days back

You can do it very simply
On device:
1- Download ROM Manager (ClockWorkMod) OR 4EXT Recovery
2- Download and Flash Recovery for your device.
3- from the application select reboot on recovery
if you already have recovery, simply download ROM Toolbox Lite and browse down to Rerbooter, then root into recovery.
On PC, with USB Development active
1- if you already have download Android SDK
RUN -> cmd -> adb reboot recovery
Click to collapse
or Install Android Commander then Device -> Reboot -> Reboot in Recovery
Click to collapse
It's very simple :fingers-crossed:
