[Q] Booting phone without the power button - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, back with a new problem.
So the wife has been having issues with her power button for a while now, and its getting to the point where it is pretty much intolerable. Last time she killed her battery it took almost a half hour of button mashing to get her phone to boot back up, and I'm worried that next time she kills the battery, I wont be able to get it to boot again.
Does anyone know a way to boot the G2/Desire Z without a working power button (other than disassembling the phone and shorting the contacts in the power button)?
Her contract is up next month, but I'm sure she'll drop it, kill the battery, or have to do a battery pull between now and then, so any help is appreciated!

I'm not sure but I think I had my g2 powered down and pluged it into my laptop and it booted.
Sent from my G2 running the random rom of the day.

like the above mentioned, there was a flaw in one of the clockwork recoveries (can't recall the version off hand) that when the phone was powered off and you plugged it in it would automaticaly turn on. for you this wouldn't be a flaw so search the forum for someone complaining about this and just install that recovery. of course you will have to be rooted first if you aren't already

I had that booting issue with the Clockwork Mod touch recovery for our phones. Guess it can be helpful in this situation. This is the thread with recovery info and this is how to flash recovery.
Not sure if the files linked to in our recovery thread still work but here is link to CWM-Touch 5.8.1.0

Couldn't she do adb reboot or no?

In Mimistry ROM you can wake and unlock your phone by pressing a trackball.

Firstly, I think you mean Andromadus Mimicry, not mimistry
Secondly, trackpad wake/unlock is a feature in most custom roms.
Thirdly, wake is completely different to booting, which is what the question was about. A (maybe somewhat vague) analogy would be, you've lost the ignition key for your car, and you're trying to start the engine by shifting to first gear.

I think the version you're looking for is Clockworkmod 3.0.0.5, which should be available in the Rom Manager app (under flash older/other recovery). can't find a working link for the img itself.

[Q] Please Help!! Did I brick my Dinc?

I had rooted my phone a week ago and running the standard rom. Everything was fine but I wanted to try a ROM. Last night I tried CM7 and it installed but I forgot to get the gapps. I restored my backup and it was back to the way it was. Then I again used Rom Manager and this time chose to download CM7 & gapps. It worked, then I went onto the market and downloaded Titaninum backup because I couldn't find it. I set it up and restored all apps with data. BTW I had 200+ to go thru so if this isn't bricked I'm purchasing the PRO version. After I went thru all the apps, I rebooted and the screen is stuck at the cyanogen mod 7 screen with the arrow going around. It was like that for over an hour so I took out the battery and tried it again. Same thing, so I decided I'd go into hboot and restore my old backup. I took out the battery again and held down the power and vol down but nothing except a vibrate happened. I can still turn it on to the cyanogen screen but can't seen to hboot. What do I do???
Update: I pulled the battery and tried holding down the volume up and the power button but nothing happens except it vibrates. I can still hit the power and get to the cyanogen screen but it just spins. If I plug in the power the small power light comes on but doesn't stay on when I'm trying to get to hboot. Please tell me it's not bricked!!!
not sure if its bricked, but from what i do know, you never, ever restore data when you change roms. there has to be a way to get into hboot or recovery, im just not the guy who knows, but someone will tell you. if it goes to the cyanogen mod, which is a great rom, then your not bricked
BUMP,
Please someone tell me there is hope for my Droid Incredible? I was sure I followed the steps, My wife will kill me if this is bricked....
U might have to return completely back to stock by using ruu.

Try " the ultimate get back to stock" thread, remember, dont restore data

You're doing it wrong. Volume down + pwr is hboot.
Thank you for the help
I guess I was getting to hboot wrong. I was holding down the volume down and the power button and keeping them down. m6droid told me to hold the volumn down button then press and hold the power button for about 2 second and let go of the power button while continuing to hold down the volume down button.
It loaded hboot and I went to recovery. Man was that scary.
I was so nervous when I rooted my phone so I made sure I read every step. I'm going to have to read a lot more about flashing ROMs before I try that again.
Thanks for taking the time to reply

Please help!!! Evo is bricked...

I have an HTC Evo 4G. HBOOT 0.93.0000, radio 2.15.00.05.02, S-OFF (this is all I can find out from the bootloader screen).
Here is the most important thing for you to know: my power button does not work. I had to install a program that let me use the volume up button to serve as the power button while the phone was operating. Since it does not work, I cant select anything in clockwork mod recovery!
Now for the story: I tried to install CM 7.1 RC and it's not going past the white evo boot screen. Before I did that, I updated clockwork mod recovery. I am able to get into the recovery which asks if i want to install an update, after which it asks if I want to reboot. After that, I have the main options (HBOOT, clear storage, etc). The power button DOES work at this stage. However, when I go into clockwork mod recovery, the power button does NOT work and I cannot select any of those options. Since I'm stuck at the white evo boot screen, my phone is effectively BRICKED.
On the main recovery screen, I have tried clear storage 2-3 times with no luck. Repeated battery pulls just keep going to the white evo screen. If I hold volume down, it goes to recovery without issue and parses the SD zip update. I have tried not updating, AND updating, rebooting and NOT rebooting, neither makes a difference. Bootloader/Power down doesnt work either - it just reloads into the white evo screen.
Does anyone have ANY suggestions? This is really frustrating and I just want my phone back...
if phone is still under warranty take it to Sprint for a replacement because with out the use of the power button you will not be able to use recovery
Have you tried flashing a Stock P36IMG.Zip file from the bootloader ?
You can use ADB on a computer boot into bootloader mode then when the phone sees the file it will ask if you want to update use vol up for yes once flash is complete use vol down to reboot this would at least get your phone up and running then you coul restore a backup with rom manager
It's likely a VERY quick fix that you and I could easily do. like a bad point on the connection where the button connects to the motherboard of the phone. However, knowing sprint JACKASS employees. They'll claim that because you rooted your phone, rooting caused a hardware failure of the power button. lmao. AND THEY WILL DO THIS! if you walk into a store, make sure they don't do ANYTHING TO YOUR PHONE THAT EVEN CHECKS FOR ROOT. just flat out tell them it is a hardware issue and is covered by the warranty. If they ask if you have one of those stupid plans that you pay 7-8 bucks a month for, tell them to lick your salty balls. then force their head into your balls and make them smell your balls. :-D
Can you try an official RUU? If it still doesnt work at least it take off root so you can take it to sprint.

you could try taking the phone apart and seeing if you can fix the power button yourself. You'll void warranty but it is an option. Obviously if you don't feel comfortable with doing that then don't do it.
try a different recovery system...
I seem to read a lot of weird problems with clockwork and newer ROMs.
i use amon-ra recovery. it is more stable and clean.
As a reminder to everyone that responded. lol. if the power button doesn't work, can't do much. Have you had the phone longer than a year?

Do you pay for insurance tell them you lost it. It may cost you what $75-100 bucks.

So are you saying the power button works at the HBoot screen but not in recovery? I wonder if it's just a bad recovery, why not try putting a PC136IMG with amon ra and update it through HBOOT since you are saying the button works when you at that screen.
agree with this post am is better
As a suggestion, I would switch recoveries to Amon RA 2.3 then go here to get unrooted using ADB. Then you can take it in for insurance repair/replacement.
Just flash the latest ruu, it will update your hboot, then go to the store, they only check for son or soff that's it

[Q] Stuck in a boot loop with HTC diagnostic area (dead volume down rocker)

Hey guys
I'm running MrGarak's fantastic MIUI rom however I've found that the kernel is booting my phone into that white HTC diagnostic screen by default. Unfortunately my volume down button is dead and so I can't navigate the menu; the only way I can boot my phone at the moment is to boot it connected via USB as that makes it boot to Recovery and I can reboot from there.
Any ideas? I think this and another rom I tried both used LordMUE's kernel, could that be the reason the boot preferences don't default to just booting the OS?
Any help and/or pointers would be greatly appreciated
So you can access bootloader and recovery!
So just flash another kernel. What's your problem?
Put a zip on your SD (with a SD reader or ADB pull), then go in recovery, navigate with the 4 keys under the screen (or vol+ and power)... and flash.
What is strange for me is that it seems to happen sudenly... so how do ou know it's the kernel. Anyway...
I have clockwork recovery, and can navigate it using the soft keys (home menu etc). You should also he able to use the vol up key to get to the bottom of the list, (depending on the recovery you're using I suppose)

Unfortunately it boots into the white HTC area (dunno what it's called). The one where you can see if your phone is S-OFF or not.
Also, I'm not sure what is to blame... but I've only just recently noticed that my phone cold boots this way so I assumed it was a recent rom that I applied. Will test this theory later.
Sounds to me like your volume down button is stuck in.
Definitely not a ROM issue, as it has nothing to do with the bootloader.

Hey, i had this issue like a month ago. You can check my previous threads. It's hardware I'm 100% sure. Basically if you're in warranty you need to flash the stock rom with S-On so you can get a new phone. You can get it to boot but it's really a pain. You have to play with the volume up when first turning on your phone. It took me about an hour. Then when it boots you'll be in a "Safe Mode" (no clue whats limited all seemed fine to me). Then do your backup if you wish.
Also note: Flashing the S-On rom is a PAIN, took me about 2-3 hours of rebooting, holding vol up, tapping vol up, to get it to boot right, but with patients you'll get it to go.
Good luck to ya.

Ah, I'm definitely beyond warranty. The thought of vol+down being stuck down makes a lot of sense!
I'll just take it to one of the dodgy Asian repair shops, if it's a hardware issue I'm sure they'll know what to do.
Cheers for your help everyone!

is it possible to flash if my volume button is spoilt?

as per topic, wondering if i can flash a rom if my volume button is spoilt?
my htc suddenly behaved weirdly and screen sporadically seems to keep pressing the back button (or at least it keeps backing when i am in some app) , then freeze. i have to press power button to off, wait a while and on it and it's back to normal, and after some time, reverts to freezing. not sure if it's because i force close apps too much tho. so i thought maybe i could try flashing a new rom. but my volume button isn't working so is it still possible to flash?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA
If you are s-on you would need to first fix your volume botton(s) before trying to root your device. If you don't it would just jam you up. There are several threads on ways to fix your volume buttons.
If you are already rooted and have flashed roms before (which is not stated, thus unlickly), you could flash a touch recovery. However, I am unsure if the volume buttons could be used or are used in the touch version (which I believe it is) and since they are stuck, the button, it could act up on you.
Sent from a dream.
1. Repair your volume button (jam it in there or glue it in)
2. Root using AAHK (I'll post instructions later, out at the moment)
3. Flash 4EXT Touch Recovery
4. Profit??

hmm, i could press the up volume long time ago if i press it hard enough, but it's all unresponsive now. gone as far as unscrewing the 2 screws at the batt area and unsure how to proceed with that volume knocker at the side below the batt compartment. so i stopped at that that time.
It's just that this sudden sporadic backing /screen freeze seems more of a bother so i thought perhaps i should try flashing, or should i try a factory reset?

yup, tried prising then so the lower part seems abit jutting out; the most it can do is slide a little up and down lol. there wasn't much info on this vol thingy and i saw one vid on disassembling the htc which kinda skims through this part and made it looked so easy (but i had no freaking idea what he did after unscrewing the screws) so i sorta left it as that and used a volume app instead
so I'm rooted and able to use the 4ext? the only 4ext i found in google play was the one i needed to pay but there was a link to the site where i could grab the free one though. supposedly if i didn't fix the volume button, am i able to use this to flash?

Do you have ADB? You don't really need the Volume button if you're already rooted and s-off to flash ROMs.
Flash a recovery like 4EXT or even CWM Touch. 4EXT is better though. You can flash 4EXT through the app in the play store and for CWM Touch you can get it here.
If you do decide to go for CWM Touch, you'll have to flash it via fastboot. Read the forums on how to do that or let me know I'll post it later if you can't find anything.
After you flash a recovery and get ADB and HTC Sync on your system. Just use the command "adb reboot recovery" to reboot the device straight to recovery without having to press the volume button.
I've been surviving without the volume down button for a long time now. And I regularly flash stuff so I can say it's not that big a deal. It is kinda living on the edge.. But ADB always helps me out.
tks i should try the ext recovery later.
phone's acting up and the top menu icon keeps interchanging between the icons and date by itself more intermittently.
for the wipe, i just check all of the options? and it'll bring me back to the recovery menu when done?

don't you have the option to reboot into recovery by long pressing power button? Beats adb fastboot recovery. My vol down rocker is broken and this for me its the best option.

Ohh,thanks
Hm nope,my power button doesn't show the boot into recovery option .
My screen was acting up so bad that
I wasn't able to do anything for a while and I thought it was a hardware issue so I went to do a factory reset instead to see if it'll be alright. But it still freezes the screen sometimes, more obvious when typing and it either jumps about /freezes. I guess it's the display issue or digitizer issue then ?

Happens to me to. Maybe rom related? I just jump to lockscreen by hitting the power button and unlocking gets me out of the freezing or acting up. Try this. Open a command window on your PC. Get to adb devices and prepare an adb reboot recovery command. Don't press enter yet. Remove the battery and reinsert it. Start the phone and quickly connect your phone to PC. You'll hear the connection sound, as you hear this , start executing the command window . The phone will boot into recovery. There you could flash ice cold sandwich which hast the boot into recovery option .
Edit: You could also download this to enter recovery.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.siriusapplications.quickboot
Also suggest you flash 4ext recovery.

I could actually still move around after my factory reset. So can probably reinstall the 4ext to flash but doesn't seem to be Rom related since I had this arhd for more than half a year and this freezing suddenly occured a few days back

You can do it very simply
On device:
1- Download ROM Manager (ClockWorkMod) OR 4EXT Recovery
2- Download and Flash Recovery for your device.
3- from the application select reboot on recovery
if you already have recovery, simply download ROM Toolbox Lite and browse down to Rerbooter, then root into recovery.
On PC, with USB Development active
1- if you already have download Android SDK
RUN -> cmd -> adb reboot recovery

Click to collapse
or Install Android Commander then Device -> Reboot -> Reboot in Recovery

It's very simple :fingers-crossed:

Stuck in bootloop. Power button not working.

Before I give up and get a new phone, I was hoping someone had a solution.
Little backstory on how the bootloop occurred, I flashed the latest Cyanogenmod 10.2 and everything seemed to be working fine minus the Google apps and SU. I realized that I forgot to flash the GAPPs also and was trying to figure out how I should boot into recovery (completely forgetting about adb). A friend said he could "fix" it and flashed a previous Cyan, leading me to the bootloop.
My power button has not worked for months which has only been a hinderance really, as I can still function with the volume rocker and gestures to turn the screen off and on.
But this is the one special case I was worried about where I would need my power button to boot into fastboot or recovery, and I am not able to.
I can get the phone on via plugging into computer, battery pull then put battery back in and wait, but that only leads to the bootloop.
Any help would be appreciated as I have tried anything I could think of as adb won't work in the bootloop for me.
Thanks.
