Hi, I'm new here and new to the Android platform in general - just bought my Evo 4G last week.
I rooted the phone and have been using the Fresh ROM, but have noticed that it has some pretty severe battery-draining issues, unless I'm just using the wrong apps and settings.
Either way, I wanted to try out some other ROMs but I cannot find anything that works well so far. I tried out Cyanogen but of course it has no 4G access. Kind of a waste of that extra $10/month huh?
MIUI had some acclaim on the forums, but once again: no 4G according to the update log.
I had read on MakeUseOf or a similar site that the Baked Snack ROM is a good option for staying purely lightweight.
Before trying any other ROMs, I wanted to get some community feedback. I generally use these apps for my phone:
Browser
Google Voice
Gmail
DropBox
Endomondo
Pulse (RSS Feeds)
Which ROM would be most recommended to maximize performance and battery life with these apps, while still taking advantage of 4G capability?
Thank you for the help.
Every phone is different so someone's experience with a particular kernal/ROM will not necessarily be the same for you.
You mentioned bad battery life you also mentioned that you bought the phone last week. Since its a new toy, all you are thinking about is spending time on it. If you have 10 hours worth of battery on a full charge but 6 of those hours are awake then you are getting good battery life.
I recomend just breaking in your toy (not breaking it) and you'll notice much better battery life and time goes on since you'll be using it less.
In the meantime:
1. limit your 3g when you're not using data
2. limit your screen brightness
3. live wallpapers are nice, but they can use some battery
4. I sign out of gtalk and make sure to turn off automatic logging in
5. Sync as often as you need to but not more than that.
Good points, thank you. And yes I've been using it constantly.
Nevertheless, I downloaded Advanced Task Killer to monitor what's going on at different times. I notice certain native apps always kick themselves on, and I was hoping to disable those.
For instance, Voicemail is constantly turning itself on and I don't need it - I use Google Voice. Is there a way to disable or uninstall this altogether?
On reboot, I notice a whole list of about 10-15 apps that start themselves up too, which I usually proceed to shut down since I obviously don't need all those running in the background. Is this a good idea?

Get rid of your task killer immediately - it does more harm than good. Quit worrying about apps popping up when you don't use them.
If you want to uninstall apps you don't use that are "system" apps get Root Explorer.
Yeah - if you want a good app killer, get System Monitor from the Android Market...its only a few bucks and it gives you a lot more insight as to what is being used and what is not. I had Task Killer, but it stopped working when the OTA Froyo update was launched - which sent me searching a Froyo compatable Task Killer...

Task Killers are not needed on a andriod device it only restart the app thus causing problems and battery drainage in the long run...Most experienced users can tell you that they will do more harm to your system then good...system panel is a good app for figuring out if you have a rogue app taking up all your cpu and not letting your phone sleep...good luck happy flashing
Again, I appreciate all the advice here, but I don't believe anyone has addressed the issue at hand:
What are some good options for a light-weight ROM that allows usage of my 4G capability?
Have read some other threads from other phones but can't get to the bottom of this:
When looking at the battery stats in the settings menu, it reports that the phone is almost always awake, and there is a very minimal difference between awake and up time in the battery statistics.
What could be causing this? A ROM problem? I'm on Leedroid 3.3.3 R5. This seems to be one of the only problems with my phone at the moment. Even though this problem persists, I can still get a day's work with the phone, so not all that critical at the moment, but it would be nice to solve it..
Thanks
Just out of curiosity I checked my awake time and it's on about 80%. I've no idea really. It might be awake due to background apps running. But would be nice to have some light shed upon this. I will look around for something similar.

Hi guys,
Anyone have an idea what would cause my battery stats to have very high "Android System" usage all of a sudden. No new apps installed.
Thanks
I'm seeing this get pretty high as well. Starting to wonder... TW really limits the information in the Battery Status dialog. Hopefully we'll get ROMs soon that have more detailed information like I had in MikG.

It has always been a bit higher than I am used to. I just grabbed the new version of betterbatterystats from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179809
Hopefully I can use this to figure it out.

Please keep me posted if you find anything
System Panel works really well for me I found. Paid version is totally worth it, too.
Just another thought/question...
I am assuming since it is "Android System" causing such high usage ( I have 5% battery left and android system is 30%), that it cant be an app I installed causing the issue.
It has to be something that is either part of the stock ROM (I am stock, not rooted) or something core to the android operating system. PLease let me know if you agree with my logic that it cant be an installed app.
Just trying to find the root cause at this point or determine if I have to hard reset which I dont feel like doing.
Thanks again
The original SGS2 has an issue similar to this.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1290020
They discovered with it that the processor has to ramp back up to 800MHz to do its pre-deep sleep tasks, in addition to taking longer than normal to do those tasks. So with a phone that woke up often to sync, even limiting the processor to 200 MHz with the screen off, it still spends a considerable amount of time at 800 MHz. I don't think they have a fix, but you can work around by limiting the amount of syncing the phone does while sleeping.
Don't know if this is related, since TMO SGS2 doesn't use the Exynos.
Thanks for the reply. My problem is that the battery usage for android system used to be 5% or less and now out of the blue is 25-30%.
Did you change any sync settings? Setting up an email account or maybe a widget to sync could do it. The phone has to do a bunch of system related tasks when it wakes up and goes to sleep, and those fall under "Android OS", so even if it is waking up to sync for an app, the system still has to do stuff, and more than usual when coming out of sleep. Like the other thread said, the original SGSII does all these things at a far higher clock speed than it needs to, and takes longer than most phones do.
I myself don't have the phone yet, nor do I have an original SGS2, but you could look up much of the same information the gentleman who wrote up the OP in that thread I linked to see if the issue is related.
I was so annoyed with this issue that I decided to do a factory reset. I dont think it helped.
So far after being off the charger for 2 hours....I sent 5 texts, browsed web for about 5 minutes. I am down to 87%. Display time is 46%, used for 18 min and android system is 17% with stay awake time at 3 minutes, and there are other items taking up battery at 5% or less like cell standby, android os, market
Does this seem normal, I never rememver android system taking up over 5% even with little usage. I am actually pissed because I would have thought that a factory reset would have helped for sure.
BTW, I am only syncing one acct, Google
I've been watching with betterbatterystats for a couple days now. I've got Skype running in the background so I expect that to use some battery and cause some wake ups.
But it has turned out that location services and updates have been doing a lot more, as much as 7000 in one day. They show up as something related to Maps, but I think that it might be Latitude. So I have disabled that location tracking. We'll see if it helps, there isn't much more using my battery. It is just something keeping it from deep sleeping.
If this doesn't work I'll look at other location apps like weather and such. I already uninstalled Accuweather after reading about how they transfer your location tracking information over the Internet unencrypted!

Same issu here... I think that all custom roms has this problem... But I was told that could be a recovery problem(because it also wakes up when charging) so I'm using AOKP(v1.2 AWESOME battery life now) with TWRP recovery (I was using CWM)... Tonight I'm gonna check if it still waking up itself.
The recovery has little to do with the running ROM. Clockworkmod switches on the phone when nearly charged.
The phone waling and screen.coming on is much more likely to be a rogue app.

try a fresh install performing full wipe, clearing cache and dalvik cache and also use fastboot erase cache command before flashing boot img
i am also on viper 2.01 and don't have any such problems
There is no way...
I just tried everything..
With any custom rom and custom recovery, the phone wake up itself when charging off...
Only with the stock rom and oficial recovery it works Ok. Hope they find a solution..
I noticed there is some kind of pattern, the screen all of a sudden starts to turn itself on and off slowly and then faster and then it reaches a point where it stays on for about 10 seconds and then goes back off for a while.. it's very strange !! i've been using viperX for a long time and this never happened... at first i thought it was the productivity lockscreen notifying me of new emails or smth but that wasnt it... i only have google apps, xda app, facebook and chrome.. could it be one of these?? maybe its an app that uses internet because i noticed it happens much less or sometimes doesnt happen at all when i turn wifi off
task killer or smart stay ex
Had happened to me last evening. Random auto wakeup, first the touch buttons lightup and then
the screen. Then it goes to sleep on its own and then wakeup again. At first I thought it was related
to motion sensor because it always managed to coincide when I started typing in my laptop. But later
I noticed it wasn't the case as I was away from the table when it reached a very fast frequency
similar to notification LED,flashing sleeping flashing sleeping.... then complete sleep.
Went in task manager in search of rouge app, found "HTC Hub","Google Search","Google Play"
and a few other were constantly being slaughtered by the "Android Task Killer Free".
Exited the "Android Task Manager Free" and the auto wakeup has completely disappeared since then.
I also closed smart stay EX, which might have been the culprit as well since I have got dust in my front
camera and those might be recognized as faces or eyes?
I suggest you check for stray apps or task killers.
Make sure that none of the apps(background) crashing or being killed.
I believe custom roms try to enhance the performance by limiting the minimum
memory balance before which background inactive apps are killed by android.
Might be the cause but not quite sure.
So thats that, worth a try. Go to [Apps-->Running] and check if some app is disappearing and reappearing
on its own. Force stop it. Reboot the phone. Avoid any memory tweaking and task killer,
android is smart enough to know when to kill and when to keep apps.
Note: I am running a stock 4.0.3(1.29), no unlock, rooting etc...
Good luck

That worked !! but in a different way, i have no task killers and the ROM did not kill apps before because it didnt use to happen until recently, but i tried to clean up my phone and uninstalled some apps and it stopped since then, problem is i uninstalled them all at once so i dont know which app exactly was the cause but sure it was one of 'em.. maybe it got corrupted and started crashing in the background or something because i didnt install any apps recently... this didnt happen not even once since i cleaned up those apps.. thanx a lot for helping
So the root cause could be thee Apps that has permissions to wack/prevent (android.permission.WAKE_LOCK) your devices from sleeping..
I experienced it occasionally while 'smart stay EX' was on beta time..

I recommend installing "Wakelock detector" which shows statistics of WAKE_LOCK usage !!
I'm experiencing that my phone seems always died. It doesn't even last 2 hours. I'm using stock everything everything up to date. Is there anything I can do to fix this issue
One user wrote here, that he found a very old battery in his quite new device. Maybe, your's too. There are YouTube's about opening the cover.
Or try a clean install. Stock is no guarantee for clean.
Bump
Wipe it is what I'd do first. I mean like go into twrp and format data then encrypt again. Only takes a minute to encrypt.. if that doesn't work I'd say what the first person who commented could be true. Old battery or your device has been left plugged in too long too many times. I zap mine until it's at 100% then immediately take it off. That's my 2ยข on this. Hope you get it resolved soon. All else fails contact Google and tell them to give you a replacement in a nice way and maybe they will let you send them that unit in and send you another. Worth a shot anyway. Good luck.

You may have better luck reviewing what everyone uses in this thread here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3229424
Different schedulers work different ways with different governor's from what I understand. Check out that thread. Plenty of nice settings shared there..

If the battery looks warped and gets noticeably hot while charging, it needs to be replaced. That's a no brainer and it cannot be salvaged or worked around. It's kaput.
If the battery is fine, but when you pick up the phone and it feels slightly warm, even though you haven't used it, then it's probably running something when it shouldn't be running. This can be caused by a lot of different things, and can be solved from anything from clearing your cache (this, often solves it), doing a malware/virus scan, all the way to factory resets and data wipes. And what is using the power isn't always apparent via battery usage/monitoring apps, so i wouldn't even bother going that route. And even though it may solve the problem, it may come back, for no apparent, traceable reason - because over time there are updates and we add or remove apps when we use our phone, and we don't know what things are changed and left alone.
Personally, i've tried so many things and some measures have worked but problems come back and persist, to varying degrees. The only sure way that i have done that gives me result is to use the Greenify app and use shallow hibernation and aggressive doze, along with not keeping wifi on during sleep (only when plugged). This ensures that, when i'm not actually using the phone, all processes (apart from core/critical) and any data is completely shut down and thereby the power that is used toward that end is cut off. If i have light use, i can have a charge for as long as 4-5 days at a time, which sounds incredible, but with the screen off most of the time and no background, rogue processes, it's possible. And the app allows you to whitelist apps, so you still get notifications and such (if you keep wifi on or plugged in).
But for this to really work well, you need to have your phone rooted and Greenify working in root, with Usage Access. Also note that this aspect of the app requires you to be on Android 6 or higher. It's a good idea to root your phone since you want to be able to get rid of bloatware that is probably draining a lot of your juice in the first place. But you may have some luck using the app without root or not at Android 6. Try it - who knows.
But do try clearing your cache first (in settings->storage). That may resolve it and you may not need to go further.
Anyway to sum up, ROOT, Greenify, shallow/aggressive doze. Hope that helps.
