--NOTE, please fix title... supposed to be "GB" Not P.. sorry
Anyone else notice if their signal strength actually degraded after the GB update?
I'm sitting in my apartment, top floor with 0..1-2 bars and around 94+ dBm. I used to get average 3... wtf? I've done the *228 1 and 2 and doesn't seem different.

ok, i have had my evo since release, and at my house i barely get 1 bar of service, in my area signal isnt perfect but still on my hero i had 3/4 bars, my bb tour i had full bars and same on my pre. is the evo's antenna just like this? or maybe a defective unit?
Bars mean nothing.
You must compare db.
im sorry, db?

The actual signal strength which is measured in decibels.
is their some type of app or way to test it?
i found mine in the settings about the phone. Mine says -86 dbm under signal strength is that a good number?

CDMA dB and GSM dB are different, so I hope no one tries to write them off as the same because they aren't. With CDMA dBm doesn't even matter as much...
How does the signal indicator work? Sprint has had 4g in NYC for a while, but I've finally gotten 4g in my area in Brooklyn as of last week(Thank you Sprint!!!!) and my DL is 4.8mbps and upload is about 1.7mbps and my bars are maxed. Now when I never had 4g by my house I'd still be able to test it out at my college which is in a different part of Brooklyn and with all the bars maxed there I got 8.8mbps and 2mbps. So does signal strength indicate how fast the speed will be or what I'm confused? I'm happy either way just curious that's all.
4Gs upload is limited to 1mbit. I call BS on this...

How can I do a screen capture? I just did speedtest again and although it wasn't as high as last time I got 4.4 Mbps and 1.07Mbps. When the upload started it was at 2.00+ for few seconds then settled at 1.00+. I have no reason to lie especially since that wasn't even pertaining to my question. My question is talking about speeds vs signal strength.

Uh yes that's correct. It will start at 2 or more but the connection is artificially throttled at 1mbps. There's simply no way you can get more than 1mbps average.
Here in Boston I am easily getting 10mbps down - 1 up. 4G rocks.
Also, Sometimes you will get really high speeds even though you only have 1 bar -- That's because the signal strength indicator takes a while to refresh (Saves battery) and also because that's simply the nature of OFDM wireless waves (WiMAX).

Didn't know that. I must have gotten the 1.07 before as well and thought it said 1.7. Regardless I didn't mean to post false information. The download speeds were definitely accurate though. Near school 2-3 bars I get 7-9mbps and at home 4 bars 4mpbs. Pretty weird, but I guess that's just the nature of the technology. Maybe it will improve over time.

max speed is 12 mbits dl
upload is capped at 1 mbit
Here is one bar for me in Salt Lake City. Tethering with PDAnet.
I think most signal indicators for digital signals are better viewed as error rate/latency than bandwidth. Bandwidth is still related but should vary at a given signal strength.

I mentioned this in another thread a while back (can't remember) but anyways..
If you are getting fluctuation in your signal bars or really poor signal (NOT LOS), dial *18. You will hear a couple beeps and then it will automatically hang up. You should see your bars come back and jump around less, if at all. It connects you to the closest, and possibly most reliable tower around you . Sprint had me do it a while back when I had my evo and it always brings my signal back and keeps it steady for me.
Obviously if youre in an area with bad signal this would not help but doesn't hurt to try! Can't guarantee it will work for everyone but it has for me most of the time.

Any call at all will bring the signal up if it can connect. I said it in another post, but ive learned to just accept that 0 bars means nothing on this phone.

I tried it and I went from 2 bars to 5-6 ( 6 bars is a full signal ) I can't believe this worked.... its a must as far as tips go
still jumping around like a kid on a trampoline ffs going from -86 to -110 consistantly
I am in such a crappy area did nothing for me.
Hey guys had a question for ya, since I'm new to Big Red I'm not sure if this is something normal or what. I have 2 iPhone 4's and 2 Incredible....I get full bars on my I phone's but only 1-2 on my Incredible. Normal behavior for Android?

It may just be the way they are programed to show bars. You shouldnt measure by bars but by dbm. Both phones could be at -89dbm but one os could be programed to show -89dbm as 2 bars and the other os as 3 bars. To see the dbm's on the inc go to Menu - Settings - About Phone - Network. On an IPhone im not sure where it shows dbm, but im sure its there somewhere. FYI the lower the dbm number the better the signal (89 is better than 99).
Could also be that the IPhones radio antenna can pull a stronger signal than the inc, seeing as it is newer it may be a better hardware thing.
Two bars is showing -72. Guess its just the way its showing the bars
My iPhone is showing the same in field test mode
Yeah there's no standard for what signal strength should be what amount of bars, so some companies have different values. HTC phones tend to have low bars with good signal. Sometimes I'll get 0 bars but I can perfectly watch netflix or talk on the phone with 0 breakups.
LTE just when live in my town on Monday at for the past two days the bars fluctuated from 1-4 frequently when the phone was in the same location. Today I flashed AOKP B29 and have noticed my phone holding onto 4 bars without any drops all day even when I move around the office. Does this have to do with 4.0.4 or the fact they are probably still in the testing phase since it hasn't been officially announced
Ignore the bars, they're meaningless between OS versions. They can program the phone to give full bars in crappy signal, which is kind of what they did here, basically. You get more bars for the same level of signal. So you're not imagining things.
However, try not to use bars here. It's just not helpful, generally. Go into settings>about phone>status and give us the dbm readings from signal strength (you can ignore ASU, it's basically the same thing as dbm). That's far more relevant.
-92 dbm is what its showing right now. Doesn't seem to be moving from that number.
Now -88 is showing 2 bars
Does build 29 include new radios?
