[Q] 4g speeds? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

How does the signal indicator work? Sprint has had 4g in NYC for a while, but I've finally gotten 4g in my area in Brooklyn as of last week(Thank you Sprint!!!!) and my DL is 4.8mbps and upload is about 1.7mbps and my bars are maxed. Now when I never had 4g by my house I'd still be able to test it out at my college which is in a different part of Brooklyn and with all the bars maxed there I got 8.8mbps and 2mbps. So does signal strength indicate how fast the speed will be or what I'm confused? I'm happy either way just curious that's all.

4Gs upload is limited to 1mbit. I call BS on this...

How can I do a screen capture? I just did speedtest again and although it wasn't as high as last time I got 4.4 Mbps and 1.07Mbps. When the upload started it was at 2.00+ for few seconds then settled at 1.00+. I have no reason to lie especially since that wasn't even pertaining to my question. My question is talking about speeds vs signal strength.

Uh yes that's correct. It will start at 2 or more but the connection is artificially throttled at 1mbps. There's simply no way you can get more than 1mbps average.
Here in Boston I am easily getting 10mbps down - 1 up. 4G rocks.
Also, Sometimes you will get really high speeds even though you only have 1 bar -- That's because the signal strength indicator takes a while to refresh (Saves battery) and also because that's simply the nature of OFDM wireless waves (WiMAX).

Didn't know that. I must have gotten the 1.07 before as well and thought it said 1.7. Regardless I didn't mean to post false information. The download speeds were definitely accurate though. Near school 2-3 bars I get 7-9mbps and at home 4 bars 4mpbs. Pretty weird, but I guess that's just the nature of the technology. Maybe it will improve over time.

max speed is 12 mbits dl
upload is capped at 1 mbit

Here is one bar for me in Salt Lake City. Tethering with PDAnet.

I think most signal indicators for digital signals are better viewed as error rate/latency than bandwidth. Bandwidth is still related but should vary at a given signal strength.

Slow Data, Low Signal Strength

I've had this phone for about a year now, but for some reason I just came to these realizations. This was my first smart phone, so I was blinded by all the fancy things that come with a smart phone...
Anyway, I'm currently running CM7 stable, 1.6.37.6 incredikernal, 2.15.00.11.19...
I'm always at 1 bar or less, around -90 dbm, and I just started running speedtests but my highest was 597 kbps down and 460 kbps up. This is complete ****.
Is my device a POS? or is Verizon network a POS?
Keep in mind, although I just started running speed tests, my data has always seemed slow... I just figured that's the way it was suppose to be...
I live 30 minutes from NYC if you are going to factor in location
Its Verizon, lately may be the iPhone effect?
In metro areas I can get downloads that are slower than upload. On the flipside in rural areas that have more cows and goats per capita than humans I can get 2+mbps.

I thought about the whole iphone craze, but I feel like it has been slow all along...
I have wondered about the dInc so I ran side by side test with an OG droid. Same crappy results in some cases. In a few moments of good signal the bone stock OG Droid was at least 200kbps faster.
I have also wondered if I am being throttled due to high data usage.
If you're speeds were throttled you should have an icon in your notification bar, Verizon isn't supposed to throttle without letting you know.

I really don't use that much data on my phone, so I don't see why I would be throttled...
However, after 2 years of no dl'ing music, I did got on a binge a few weks ago and dl'd about 20 gigs. But I don't think this would affect my wireless account, and I could of sworn Verizon prided themselves on not throttling...
I have seen same results and its not just on the incredibles. I believe its Verizon network. Makes me wonder if its them working on trying to go 4g or what?? I know its not the incredible because I have had same result in certain areas getting 2mbs others i get 200kbs. Its just the network

You have to factor in alot of things. Your radio version. What tower your on and how many people are using that tower. Location location location. ROM (Although I don't think the problem is related to CM7)
The condition of your phone. Weather. Your PRL, try updating your PRL to make your phone search for a better signal.

Just ran a test in the Bronx, NY. 3 bars, 1020 kbps down, 165 kpbs. What a piece of garbage.
I'm going to unroot and have them give me a new one....
Doubt they'll do anything as that's right in the middle of their advertised 3g speed range.

3g Speeds

I dont know if it is just a coincidence that the iphone came out today but my 3g speeds have went to a mind numbing crawl. With full bars and using speedtest app, I have not hit over 60 kBs all day. Stopped at sprint store and they said network was overloaded and they couldn't even run normal tests on my phone to diagnose. I think I am having issues anyway since I can't seem to get over 175 kBs in the last two weeks before today and I have a tower 1/4 mile away. I have dreaded the iphone release on sprint since announced.....hope this is not what I can come to expect from here on out. I've been with sprint for 14 years and really don't want to have to change.

That's about how 3g is for me yesterday in Torrance, CA. Very poor performance. When calling Sprint to ask about possible network issues, they kept me on hold for a supervisor for >30min before I hung up. Sprint's network is starting to be a major concern for me.
Sent on the run.
Where i live I am very lucky to break 50k and that been going on for about a yr.
I was going to make a topic about this earlier. Yes sprint did increase the data throughput. As soon as i woke up i checked my speeds as they could not sell a 3g phone that cant even stream music. Sure enough speeds almost at 1mbps normally in my area 50kbps to 300kbps.
I am not a lawyer by any means but since the actual sprint website says:
Sprint Mobile Broadband devices operate at average download speed ranges from 400-700 Kbps with peak rates up to 2 Mbps, and at average upload speeds of 40-70 Kbps with peak rates up to 144 Kbps in Mobile Broadband (EVDO Rev 0) coverage areas.
Sprint Mobile Broadband devices that are EVDO Rev A will operate at average download speed ranges from 450-800 Kbps with peak rates up to 3.1 Mbps, and at average upload speeds of 300-400 Kbps with peak rates up to 1.8 Mbps in Mobile Broadband (EVDO Rev A) coverage areas.
https://www.sprint.com/business/products/products/evdoCoverage2.jsp
Do I have any recourse based on what they say I should get vs what I actually get? Maybe a breach of contract or something or violation of TOS......thems my only legal terms I learnt and can use, lol.
In all seriousness, it just doesn't seem right that I am told I would get one thing and I am locked in for 2 years with it but yet I get another. Kind of a bait and switch thing..........wait.......another legal jargon phrase that just came to me, haha.
Increase In Speed
For the past month I been doing a speed test every morning as soon as i get into work. Till today I have not gone over 0.5 Mbs download (Honolulu, Hawaii)
But today I ran the same test i do every day and was able to hit 1.56 Mbs!!!!
Did a 4G test and got 0.1 Mbs ...super crap speeds as always.
Ran some more speed test on 3G and was surprised to get all of them around
1 Mbs. Sprint must have upped their throughput for the iphone 4 crap.
Wonder how long it will stay like this. If my speeds drop again after the initial iPhone crap I'm going to be very pissed.

Starting?! Man, sprint's network has sucked big bawls for roughly the last 2 years. maybe even longer but iv only been with em for 3 years. I got 1 year left. Hopefullly ill be earning more by next year and jump ship to verizon and their vastly superior LTE network...even VZW's 3g network matches Sprints 4g in most areas of Los Angeles.
3g gets me 1.30mbps down and .50mbps up. Haven't been able to test 4g speeds, as I can't seem to get a 4g connection eventhough I'm smack dead in a 4g area.
I noticed I dramatic increase at my work. I couldn't believe it. Previously it was less than 300 kbps.

I don't trust the speedtest app anymore. I did a test and it showed that I was getting some horrendously slow speed. Shortly after, I got a notification that doubletwist had an update. Almost 7mb program, downloaded and installed in, no joke, about 20 seconds. Did a speedtest on Speakeasy's website and got a very different result
Speeds have improved dramatically, but I'm not sure why the app doesn't reflect that.

Used speedtest to show show your 3g speed. Then close out and go to your dialer and press *18 you will hear beeps hangup and do speedtest again. Speed should triple.

[Q] Question about dbm

I'm using Open Signal Maps to see my connection. Apparently I have -95 dBm thru -104 dBm. I heard that -100 is practically no signal.
I'd also lyk to add that I have seen my phone drop to 1X. I didn't even know that existed in cities. Is that Sprint Version of a GSM phone on 1G? I'm sorry, I'm a previous Tmo customer, where we had 1G(.005Mbps)), 2G(.5Mbps), 3G, 4G. Here on Sprint, it seems lyk it's 1X, 3G, 4G.
I have an attachment of my closest tower. Shouldn't I be way above what I'm getting? The box is me, the circle is a McDonalds I go to. When I'm at McDonalds, my data speeds flourish. I see those 10Mb 4G speeds with full bars. At my house, I only get 3G. And I'm lucky if I get that. Sometimes it drops to 1X. Luckily we have WiFi 10Mb speeds at home.
This, however raises a huge question. Why do I have to be SO close just to get good signal? I mean, the fact that my phone is dropping to 1X means there's something up, right?
P.S. I know it's not called 1G and all that. I'm just saying that for those to easily understand. So you don't have to make a post correcting me.

The Open Signal app is not that accurate add far as location. Many times it would locate my tower in the middle of a lake. Data speeds vary greatly depending on distance, tower traffic, etc. 1x is what we sprint users call 2G.

1X= 1xRTT which is a voice/text network. it SOMETIMES works with web, albeit painfully slow. and just incase you didnt know, the ''G's'' only stand for "generation", so really, you could say 1G=talk, 2G=text, 3G=web, 4G= faster web.

Yea, but I mapped it, lyk looked at the visual and saw a tower there. I understand the whole network traffic and all, but when I go to work, my location is farther, but I still connect to that same tower, and I still get better reception. It's seeming lyk there is something at my house causing my phone HORRIBLE reception. That's the only thing I can think of. I don't know what's going on. -_-
It just seems that all the places I rest, by that I mean hang out, it seems I have no reception, but when I'm at the store or some place random I have great access. The more convenient places, but that's not very practical. This is making me want to break off this family plan and go back to Tmo.
Call Sprint and inquire about the Airave or search for that term on this forum. That device will fix your low signal issue where you hang out and they'll probably give it to you for free instead of lyk losing you as a customer
I know that 4g aka WiMax runs at 2.6Ghz frequency. 3g runs at a much lower frequency. The higher the frequency the worse the signle is at penetrating building and obsticals and is drastically reduced in effectiveness the farther away you are from the tower. See Verision uses LTE which used like 900Mhz i beleive which penetrates deeply into buildings and has a much farther range. Sprint is making the transistion to LTE on a 700Mhz frequency band i beleive which will be the best 4g out. Should be completed by the end of 2013 but i beleive it may take a bit longer than that. As for 3g and 1x getting a very weak signal can led to a tower not having a strong enough signal to support data of 3g. Also some towers are older and havent been upgraded to the 3rd generation of wireless data as a previous poster stated 1g 2g 3g is first, second and third generation techknology. What is weird and doesnt make sense to me ans many other people is that how many bars you have does NOT necessarily coinside with how fast your 3g connection will be. I and thousands of others have learned that even if you have full bars your 3g may to slow as snails and i have had 1 bar to no bars and gotten better 3g speed that certain places with full bars. Some of it has to do with weather, obstacle and how up to date the tower is. Like i said there are still older towers out there that don't even support 3g still. Hope this helpa you a little and im sorry that even pro's i have talked to cant say for sure why full bars and almost no bars doesnt always mean greater and less 3g speed necessarily :-(

Lte speeds inside a building (home)

What are you guys average lte speed at home?
I live in Houston and lte is great outside but in my house. I keep getting about 4 mbps as average. Lowest was 0.8. Highest was 10.
It might seem weird but 3g seems to be more faster by average...
Is this typical for inside homes? I live in a regular two story house... signals were not affected when I had at&t.
Could it be that Verizon just doesn't have good signal in my house?(despite saying that, my brothers iPhone 4s has good 3g signal)
Or is it my device that's messed up?

I would consider yourself lucky. The best i can get at my house is zero to one bar of 3g. I probably can only download @ 15 kbps at most. Most of the time...i just sigh at my phone when im home. Verizon doesnt seem to like my house.
Whats funny is....i drive 1 mile out near a freeway... and instantly 4g kicks in and i can constantly get 30 megabits per sec down and up. Ive seen it shoot as high as 50 mbps a few times

Does 4G not penetrate walls as well as 3G? I go from 1 bar to almost full if I go outside my apartment building. I cannot speak to my speeds, but the connection strength is definitely stronger outside. Now that I think about it though, at school (in an area without 4G), my 3G disappears when I go inside a specific building. Maybe their walls are made of lead...

T-Mobile Horrible Download and Upload speeds at home

I just switched over to Tmobile from AT&T and I'm having horrible download and upload speed. I got the phone last night and I have been consistently getting under 1 mbps download and upload. Sometimes speeds will go up to 5 or 6 (for a short time) but never more than that. Is this an issue with my new phone (LG G4) or congested network. I tried a factory reset and many reboots with the same result. Any help would be great. Thanks!!
The last speed test with 15 mbps was while I was at work, so this is only going on at my home.

Look at the coverage map again and zoom in to street level. See what it says then
I live in Hayward and have been getting terrible T-Mobile speeds for a few months now. I called T-Mobile and they said they're updating the network in my area, that's it's been going on for a few months and should continue for a few more.
Cleared data cache and did a speed test and it was in the 20 mbps range (this was while on the phone with a T-Mobile rep). Subsequent speed tests after I ended the call were back to my unusually slow speeds. Going to give them another class this weekend.
I used to get great speeds, but now I'm not getting LTE speeds at all.

I also live in SF, coverage here sucks. Even in downtown.
i'm in Abu Dhabi tho, its all about provider/traffic
I'm just outside a Chicago a few miles. 2 miles away would be a Chicago Zip code less than 20 mins from the loop my speeds been crap for almost a year this is why I never upgraded added a data plan just the 1GB free didn't need alot but not going to pay for speeds where I'm only getting 1-3 at night and 0.50 -1 down during the day. The 4g speeds are better not much but they are. I only have 2-3 bars inside full signal outside but that does not matter. I just live in a ****ty spot but it's just not where I live I run into this alot on the go just around the area or a few miles away.
You know what's funny did a speed test around 1am got the same results I posted above just did one now and guess what. 30 down and 4.5 up I know other areas are faster but I can live with that and buy data if the other areas are about the same. I wonder if they finish the upgrade in the Chicago area or maybe mine ? I had to take another look to make sure I wasn't on Wifi but once I seen the upload speed I knew it wasn;t since my ISP is faster then that.
Just did a few test outside 4 or 5 bars in 5 different spots hit 19-47 down and 14-18 up looks to be decent finally.
I recently switched to T-Mobile as well. There is an area in my neighborhood where I can pull down over 70 Mbps!! If I move two or three blocks over towards my house though, it drops down to around 10-15 Mbps. I use WiFi in my house so I'm not that annoyed though.
Are the speeds horrible everywhere in your neighborhood? Are the speeds bad just INSIDE your house? What if you step outside? Remember T-mobile runs on higher frequency and maybe your house blocks the signals.
And now we are back to 1-3 DL tonight. Ha **** does not make sense.

Yes BW 15. Just ****ty they might be doing upgrade's so I don't know. I just know it's always been crap and took a test again now to prove it 0.19 Down and 0.97 Up on LTE. So I don't know what that one test was the other day maybe they were doing some testing ? Because I hit 47 Down and 18 up on the one test. As I mentioned it don't matter much since I have Wifi at the house but I'd be pissed if I was paying any extra for Data and not getting something that's atleast usable. I'm sure my area will catch up in time.
