New Android marketplace looks familiar - Windows Phone 7 General

There's a touch of Metro in the new Android Marketplace... More importantly they now have a Books section which I hope will come to exist on WP7.

Yup, definitely metro inspired. I quite like it. I wonder if it's coming to my Android tab and how it'll look?
Casey

doesn't look good at all.
the books section is hodge podge, movies is better... netflix shot itself in the foot this week so timing is good....
that, and google+ is very polished for a beta. wow, just wow.
interesting, gave out 100/101 g+ invites, and now I have 100 more. sweet !

The books section is great just for the fact that it gets books away from the other apps. They are increasingly annoying in the WP marketplace.

That's why I'm convinced that Microsoft will address that can give it an own section in the marketplace.

I like it!
Even though it's metro inspired, it's way better than it was before.

I think Google redesigned the new market that way to get a jump on WP7. The WP7 market needs to be improved and I was thinking it needed more apps per horizontal space...like 2 or 3 side by side...just a little while before the new Android market appeared. I bet Google saw that same need and figured they would jump on that style and design before MS had a chance to because the new Android market is exactly like how the WP7 market should look.

Did anybody else notice that they misspelled "revamped" in the URL?

I think that Googles UI design overall has become a bit Metro inspired. I shouldn't say that I'm complaining though

so now alot more ppl like metro UI..... and other OS are following MS lead....

The WP7 marketplace has a books section

The only Metro-Like inspiration there is one page with squares.

Enough is Enough!

The Windows Phone 7 Marketplace already has enough issues such as Navigating. But surely I cannot be the only person who gets absolutely infuriated when I see these STUPID POINTLESS Real Estate Apps by the Hundreds!! And they just keep on coming..it never ends... This makes browsing through the Marketplace such a Pain... Look developer of those Stupid Apps... Enough is enough... Please stop contaminating our Marketplace... We already have a Joke for a App Store... Filling it with your dumb Apps just make matters worse.

I agree. It is annoying.
But the truth is, most people think "apps" make the phone because most people are stupid, so Microsoft is happy to see all those "apps" come to give them more apps faster in the marketplace.
But, if there are so damn many real estate apps, give them a ****ing category so I can ignore them! They all could have been combined in one really useful app and saved Microsoft reviewers time. I wondered why my apps have seemed to take a lot longer lately to get reviewed, because there are 100 maybe even 1000s of real estate apps they have to certify, each one, fairly thoroughly......!
I just sent an e-mail through support in the AppHub:
I would just like to make a request for a new category in the Marketplace: 'Real Estate'. These apps are contaminating the Marketplace for the rest of us at the moment, making it harder for new apps to be discovered. We don't want the Marketplace to be filled with this junk like the AppStore is, or even worse for the Marketplace to end up like the Android market.

Calum

Not much, but if enough registered developers complain, maybe someone will listen. Even better would be to have these apps removed from the 'New' section. If they had there own category then apps like the WP7Applist app could filter them out.
I was about to post a similar thread regarding those annoying real estate apps. What is so wrong with creating 1 app that covers all cities instead of separate app for each individual city.
I live in UK and dont want to know about real estate across the US.
Please dont let it turn into the Android market.
Too late, it's already filled with spam.
Please, an admin move this to general (check sticky)
I guess that's the downside of Microsoft now allowing us to publish 100 free apps a year instead of 5...
But to echo the sentiments of everyone here - why not make those apps one bloody app with region settings?!
Name and shame: SmarterAgent.
Casey
Here in Canada we have one app that uses your GPS to find stuff nearby. That is really dumb to have an app for each city.
Kind of like that navigation app that has one app for each country is has maps for.
you can contact the developer and let them know your feelings...

If there is an upside to this, at least it makes the app count that is reported in the news look good . After all, detractors keep comparing the size of the WP7 Marketplace with the size of the Android Market and the iOS App Store. The fact that the proportion of "spam" apps for those platforms is at least as high as it is for WP7 never gets mentioned. All we hear is FIVE HUNDRED THOUSAND IPHONE APPS!!!
Well, now there are OVER TWENTY THOUSAND WP7 APPS!!!
And seriously, the quality of the good WP7 apps is growing every day. Has anyone checked out the new WP7applist app? It is by far the best marketplace browser I have ever seen.

I did. And I'm using it multiple times a day ever since I installed it. It's a bit slow though and I don't like the way it provides screenshots. But this aside, it's amazing.
I dont quite know what u r talking about..never seen 1 myself, but then again, i dont visit a market place as often...but i agree, there should be a section for 'Real estate' and file them all under that...
OK, I just ran into a simmilar situation. Search the market place for "GPS Timer". The results look interesting and diverse. However, several of them, with different titles, are all the exact same app.
Chrono GPS FREE
GPS Sports Watch FREE
GPS Sports Watch
Jogging Partner
These are all the exact same app. How anoying is that!
Got the same situation here...I think WP7 team is sleeping and a developer called smarter agent is so hardworking spamming the marketplace with his awesome real estate app.
I have observed that this problem is non-stop for 1or2 months,Until now, everytime i go into the new app category...they are at least 50real estate apps by smarter agent.Until now,i think there are at least 1000+ real estate, quotes and spam book apps....
Now I'm started to think back when M$ said, they will promise quality apps rather than quantity. And now I know how they filter the apps and they enjoy sleeping.
Good job WP7 team,

WP7 has one of the most fat growing app marketplaces!
Yea, way to go!!!
That's important, but not the fact that 95% of apps are retarded and useless
It's nice that some people here are not working at Microsoft. The "who cares, it's more apps to the marketplace" attitude is just ridiculous. At least Microsoft heard the complaints and are doing something about it.
we are limiting the number of apps any one developer can have certified in a single day to 20.

5 a day still means 1500 a year from a single spammer. I think quantitative checks are useless and they should go with qualitative .
But it's clear they have opened the market to spam on purpose and fooled devs into believing their quality mantra.
HIccups and delays annoyed me, but this is huge and inexcusable

True, though the same blog post does say that MS have contacted the developer to push them onto the right track (i.e. build one app which is locale aware). They have also removed the apps from the Marketplace.
I'm going to give MS the benefit of the doubt, by saying I don't think they expected it (somewhat naively). Remember, we were only permitted five free apps a year before we had to pay for submitting them (now we get 100).
Casey
I think M$ should warn and freeze the spammer account for a certain period such as 2weeks or 1month. this is the more efficient way to do things.Furthermore,M$ should work harder to filter the quality of apps...

I love WP7 but isn't iOS 5 The Ultimate OS?

Looks like Apple is taking what people love about every other OS and mashing up into one. That's just brilliant!
Sure they're copying plenty of stuff but the end users won't care as long as their phones do everything they want. Any thoughts?
I dislike the title of this thread. Espeically in a WP7 forum. If they are "copying" then it just shows how good the people are they are copying it from. iOS needed to keep up with the latest standards and its good to have competition.

Wow, are we not adults here? Can't we talk about what's good about an other OS? Really, wow...
that's just it save from notifications and text only browser, a lot of things are offered in wp7 mango natively...so what's the point? I mean the main problem I have is that apple is still app centric. Yes its finally doing a lot with regards to integration, but is it enough? I'm not sure
I don't mind having a discussion on this I bought my sister an ipad so the ios info is good for me to know...
In many ways it seems that apple has finally caught up to microsoft and google in terms of OS integration and consumer demand...only took 4 years
imho the notes system looks cluttered and gimmicky
lol
I saw the title of this and came by, really from my reading on this apple didn't show me anything that wp7 doesn't support natively or will. Its good they updated their approach keeps people on their toes but your title is wow.

I gotcha P
I have owned every major phone OS (Smartphone) in US, and WP7 just works for me I have had android and IOS both are great at what they do give me apps that do what I need at that time. Now to touch base with a couple of things we are all wrong in the respect of what is better for this guy is better for that. Everything is based on perception on how it feels to the consumer, and most comparisons on phone stuff is based on what someone shows us at a given time. I pleaded my case with Windows Mobile time and time again when I was with ATT and then the new Phone OS came out with features I already had, the biggest is (tethering) but people tend to go with whats cool and who is using what. Apples biggest advantage by far is accessories I buy one and it works on all my iphones, ipods, etc that is the only advantage I see apple having right now. (I hope this is still on topic I jabber alot)
Alright, can a mod just close the thread please, I can see where this is going...

Actually, Copy Paste is there sincer iOS 3. 2 years from now. But I think they copied exactly Android. In a beautiful way, of course.
Still, I prefer Mango than iOS 5 (;

I see what your saying about the iOS so know that one person fully agrees with you.
I don't see a problem with them copying anything? Really, what they are copying is exactly what they needed to make a well rounded OS. It would be very foolish of them to just look at what they need and push it aside. I say, iOS 5 is gonna be insane.
I would also like to add that I kinda predicted their new notification system in another thread on here. And yes, I do want a cookie
There's a lot of stuff WP7 Mango does that ios doesnt do- Threads that integrate your SMS, IM's, Facebook chat, People hub where you can see your history with a person including calls, texts, pictures, bing extras, local scout, native Office, Xbox live (8 new games here http://www.winrumors.com/8-new-xbox-live-enabled-windows-phone-7-games-revealed-at-e3/), IE9 with hardware acceleration - looking at ios5 I cant think of anything that it now has that really trumps Mango.
apple added features from other OS's but even then WP7's integration is second to none and still comes out on top for me.
I don't see much difference in terms of features between iOS5 and Mango (there are areas where each one is better than the other), but that's certainly bad for Mango. It's not enough to have feature parity with the leader to beat it, especially when media calls iOS5 "massive" and Mango "underwhelming".
I understand the sentiment and agree but dont think the title gave the thread much chance..
If its the ultimate there is no reason for anyone to buy any other device.
One thing is good though - it'll be much easier for Microsoft to explain what Windows Live is. Their Marketing and PR people should commit harakiri, I think. One cannot live with such shame.
Off topic: Windows Mobile had copy and paste and Multi-tasking since forever. So I don't know what all the praise for iPhone is/was all about. I also believe what Microsoft really needs to work on is their Marketing department. I think that's just where Apple beats them.
Sent from my HD7 T9292 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
iOS5 looks like a cracking upgrade for people who already own iOS devices, or are heavily invested in the Apple ecosystem. It's fan service, rather than something that will bring in new customers by the droves.
I've got to say though, it does tempt me back towards an iPhone. If they had a Zune Pass style music subscription service I might have made the jump with the iPhone 5, though there's a few other features I'd like to see. WebOS-style linking between phone and tablet for a start.
Mango looks like a stronger update, but starting from a weaker position. Microsoft also seem to lack a real platform currently. They've got lots of small projects going on, but it's a bit disjointed. My Windows Phone, Windows PC and Xbox 360 don't really play nice together and I'm yet to see a Windows Tablet that I want to buy. Windows 8 needs to hurry up...

Developers are stepping up!

I would just like to point out the amazing jobs developers are doing in the lead up to Mango. Over the last 2 weeks we've had many official apps people want on a platform and hopefully this will last up to and beyond the Mango release. Also hats off to Microsoft as I'm sure they have something to do with it (close release dates can't just be a coincidence). A few examples of official apps from various markets released only in the last 2 weeks:
- IM+
- NBC Nightly
- MTV News
- Evernote
- FoodSpotting
- VH1 To Go
- Steven Colbert's The Word
- StubHub
- Best Buy
- AmazonFresh
- L'Equipe
- i>tele
- Larousse Francais
- Tele 7 Programme TV
- Telerama
- Dictionary.com
- Allrecipes
- XE Currency
- Photofunia
- KiK Messenger
- Weight Watchers
- National Park Maps
- Qype
- Plants vs Zombies
- Angry Birds
Now if only Mango would come very very soon we'd be a happy bunch .

Yeah, WP7 is really moving on now. Some of the apps you mentioned are not available over here in Germany, but the ones I happened to have tested are really nice. Especially because of the ease of use that the metro ui offers. I'm really looking forward to what kind of apps mango will spawn.
Yeah they all seem well made and not just lazy ports from iOS/android. I missed a few too like Gowalla for instance.

Yep, I know, but the point of building a marketplace _late_ and from the ground up, was -I though- avoiding the errors made by those who arrived first. At this point I'm still uncertain if they managed it, when I see 20 cloned apps floating in the new section now and then, apps that track one single guy achievements in a single game (20x times) and such things. But that's another argument.
I use Top Apps 2, which sorts apps/games based on reviews and not download count and has a nice set of filters.

There is a trend on wp7 which is quite different than android. it's both good and bad in my opinion.
Games which are not xbox-live, even good ones, aren't really promoted on the platform. The same goes for apps that aren't 'official'.
This isn't bad per-se, meaning big companies with good resources can provide very polished good apps, like the ones you mentioned.
On the other hand, independent developer are left with their own means, with the menace of ever increasing spam and invisibility.
The 'featured' section is confined to 'official' apps like the ones you mentioned and the games section official promotion/visibility is monopoly of xbox.
While this can produce a few good standard apps, I think Microsoft could work better with the plumbing necessary for indie devs. Right now they basically have no interest in putting some boundaries between a good indie app/game and a crap/cloned/spammy one. They just mention that the 'marketplace will decide for itself'. Seems a bit too little.
Yeah I know this isn't all that weird, but seeing stuff like doodle jump on xbox live and free clones that got to the platform months earlier, that are free and actually better than the original... I feel something is missing.
Personally, seeing the problems linked with the 'free' and 'new' sections of the marketplace, it seems to me that they had the potential for the ultimate best mobile marketplace ever, and they've blown it away following previous models and standards.
All this to say that it's excellent to see all these official apps coming out (whilte the title of the thread is wrong, since it's not 'devs' that are stepping up, rather it's companies that bought in), there are a few missed opportunities to have a mix of what is good on android and ios together.
Don't misunderstand me, I know wp7 is far closer to ios than android, at least for marketplace structure. And I would still take this marketplace over others.
I just think people upstairs care too much about numbers
[disclaimer] yep, I do develop indie stuff, like the game you can find on the signature, so my point of view is partial. At the same time I feel like spam, app quality and visibility is a big issue with the current marketplace structure, because it's still at 1/10 at other marketplaces size but already affected by similar problems (cloned apps, spam apps, non-content apps). I didn't expect it on a new system like wp7, but evidently it's normal.
streak continues..The New York Times official app dropped today, not too much of a biggie but its slick and for wp7 now

You do have a valid point on how Microsoft handle apps visibility, it's a bit of a shame but I can understand that as a new platform they need to promote the known apps and games to prove that the OS is viable. Hopefully this will change soon enough and maybe the web marketplace will improve things.
As for indie devs, I think the issue too many have is that they don't try hard enough to offer something compelling and truly exciting. I generalise a lot mind you, there are lots of talented developers making WP7 apps. However when I see something like 4th & Mayor, an app so good they made foursquare remove then redesign their official app, I'm wondering why more developers aren't producing this kind of work (not to mention the 4th&M developer shares his work with whoever wants it). We also need more original content, not just clones. I mean, Chickens n' Vixens is nice and all but we knew from day one Angry Birds was coming and that it would obviously get all the attention from Microsoft and most consumers. The amount of work that went into that could have been put in something much more original, it's a bit like a waste of talent.
Then again I'm not a developer so I shouldn't criticise but from where I stand, if an app is excellent it will be recognised and featured as such.

Honestly, that sucks ****. One of the best and outstanding apps for Windows Phone is gonna be pulled from the marketplace. Let me get this straight.. I don't blame the developers (LazywormApps), since they decided to follow the terms of service that apply to Youtube.com. I blame Google for not providing the appropriate API or at least allow the use of workarounds.
It think this is a pretty good reason to show our support, even though I'm currently now sure about how exactly. Maybe turn to Google support, or Microsoft? Or whatever. I'm sure if enough users help, things could change.
Pretty ****ed up :/

Google are the reason they are pulling it:
“Unfortunately, Google has refused to allow Microsoft’s new Windows Phones to access this YouTube metadata in the same way that Android phones and iPhones do. As a result, Microsoft’s YouTube “app” on Windows Phones is basically just a browser displaying YouTube’s mobile Web site, without the rich functionality offered on competing phones. Microsoft is ready to release a high quality YouTube app for Windows Phone. We just need permission to access YouTube in the way that other phones already do, permission Google has refused to provide.”

It's in no a way an argument! However the fact that absence of an app made it so unappealing should definitely be classified as app-centric user who knowing that the OS lacks apps should have bought an android in first place!
I wonder why metrotube did not mention Google Restriction on MetaData and said HD as the reason
And if that is so How did the App work ?

If my memory serve me right, they used some undocumented api and some TOC violation to make HD video available to WP7, I didn't keep the source link, maybe someone here can help?
Lol that's my luck.....i just purchased it two days ago! I've typically just used the browser but heard so many good things about the app I figured I'd give it a shot. What a shame because it actually is a very nice app.
We want metrotube even without HQ/HD streaming!

Go ahead and tell @LazywormApps
That's sucks, and I paid for this app.
Oh well, supertube will suffice. Lets blame Google.
I can't believe Google is STILL blocking wp7 from this. I really want to know why they are doing this, and even more how they are allowed to block only a single platform.

What makes me wonder is the fact that there's a very well working YouTube app for XBox 360. So why is the API officially available for THIS specific Microsoft platform, but not for Windows Phone?
It could just come down to not wanting the competition to have a feature that you use as a major selling point. The Xbox platform doesn't compete with Android, but WP7 does.
With iOS, the contract between YouTube and Apple was established before there was an Android platform (and, I suspect, before the Google acquisition of YouTube was completed). But, since the contract is already in place, I suspect that Google's hands are tied on that front (at least until the terms of the contract expire, if ever).

+1
I have a samsung focus and an HTC flyer. I am amazed to see heavenly lag free browsing, no force closes, tightest social integration, apps managemnt with games going to Xbox category, all photos in one place, office, skydrive, etc etc on my focus. Mango is plain awesome. As for phone, I don't need an android phone after seeing the performance of my flyer vis a vis my focus. Though flyer is not bad in performance, I just wish there were mango tablets available in market. I will definitely go for a mango or tango tablet once it is available in market.
That's why Google is afraid of this new age os.

anyone tried supertube
can anybody try to capture the application? i think that could be the best thing. So in the future we could just deploy this app with a xap deployer.

So Excited To Be Back!

Found an original Focus semi cheap while I'm waiting on the 32GB Galaxy Nexus and the 900 to be released. So I'm moving back here for at least a couple weeks. Last time I was on WP was just when Mango dropped. Looking around YT and our WP app section. I feel like a kid in the candy store. So many users and new apps. Good to be back, I really really enjoy this OS.
Anything cool I should check out? (Vable Browser looks Chrome-ish!)

Depends - what you are looking for? games? navigation? tips?
Play with tellme some. Ask it weather in san fransico. Say start app. Say find "insert address here) and you'll see the map program come up. Say find pizza (or if indoors and no gps find pizza (your city name)
There is so much to play with - you have to give us an idea where you want to go 1st.

Anywhere dude. I'm really missed "Hello everybody I'm George Ponderer for WPcentral." Listened to everything on thier YT channel last night. I just went back into my WP account and cleaned that up. Looking for a decent TBT Nav app. Got a couple browsers listed to try. Put Ziggy on the list. What's cool? What apps do you have on your WP?

I'm an app whore lol.
The best offline TBT would be navigon. It's 3d also and the most expensive. For 2d, turn by turn works good (online one is pretty cheap) Built in bing works great also but doesn't auto voice announce.
Grab an app called AppFlow.
It will show you the trends and has good recommendations.
Freda is good ebook reader
Keyring for keeping shopping barcodes
Urban dictionary is hilarious along with I LOL'D
theChive is good
xda forum app of course
The most used ones that i use for keeping up with WP7 and technology are WP7 News (Which rocks as it scans like 2 sites for news) and Tech news now
If you like four square, 4th and mayor is the best.
...I'm a WP7! rocks
Amazing weather or weather channel are great weather apps.
Forward contact is great to share contacts with via qr code and scanning with bing vision (no bluetooth needed to share a contact)
Titan is a great FREE game.
That is just some i could think of.
If you're into twitter check out Carbon (other thread about it)
The devs are planning a sweet update too.
If you're looking for a beautiful weather app use Weather View (former called Vädret).

I'll be around longer if the rumors are true about the 32GB.
