I was installing a rom last night and a thought occurred to me which led to the question, what would happen if i were to take a nandroid backup of my phone with cwm 3.1.0.1 and restore it to a different samsung epic running the same version of cwm?

I assume it would work, but it'd probably put all of your personal info on it as well. You could always try, but make sure to make a nandroid on the "other" phone, and have odin just in case.

i think if you were to make a nandroid backup after installing a new rom b4 syncing with google or anything there would b no personal info to be copied to the other phone, right? might b another option for those whose pc doesnt see their phone.... one could possibly make customized versions of roms with specific apps quickly and easily.... sorry for the random txtspeak....

Ive always heard, and followed the rule. Never restore a nandroid on a different phone.
Nor sure what would happen, but it makes sense to me how every phone is so different.
Some kernels or radios work great on my phone and suck on yours. So I feel it might jack stuff up.

PM a developer is my suggestion then, because I have no idea of the consequences, and whether they are good or bad.

I wouldn't do it because the other person can have access to your GMail, texts, contacts, private apps, etc...
Then again, one time when i had the G1, we had a 2.1 Sense ROM Port, and nobody could Flash it except for ONE person. So he Flashed it, made a Nandroid before he did anything to the ROM, and we all Restored his Nandroid to our phones. That was the only way for us to Flash the ROM until the V2, V3, etc... Vegaman was a beast tbh.
Which makes me wonder, will we ever get Ports from Sense, Sony Ericson UI, Droid X/Droid 2/Droid 3 ROMs? I think maybe after the Kernel we could start working on them. That'd be BEAST! I know some guys working on Sense, hopefully it'll work soon though with the Kernel.

It works just fine. That is how you transfer everything to a new phone when you have to get a replacement. I just had to do this.

Did this as well about 2 months ago after i had to get a replacement. worked just fine.
would work perfectly fine...
just delete the data.img and cache.img and .android_secure soo all there is is a boot.img and system.img, then edit the nandroid.md5 to only have those files.. dont rename them.
on the new phone, restore the backup, then factory reset..
no personal information

You can just use nandroid if you want to switch. It's not too bad to test out and play between ROMs.

What are you talking about? You wouldn't need to if you backup the roms properly.
Why in the world would you want to dual boot? Just nandroid.
im just saying it would be cool to have cuz its call dual boot n something new to try.......u guys dont? thats fine.......i wish someone would tho
I don't think I'm performing nandroid backups properly either. I always have to reinstall apps like the OP. Can someone please tell me the right way? Thanks!

Lol! what on earth are yall talking about? nandroid only works with the same type of rom you used previously. for example, using rooted stock rom then backup via nandroid then switch to CM and restoring doesnt work. you would have to flash back to rooted stock and then restore. you can obviously make multiple backups... one for each rom. but again... you have to be on the same rom... otherwise, the restore will seriously corupt your current rom.
I'm beginning to wonder if some even know what dual boot actually means, lol!
Thats why you do a wipe befor you restore from a nandroid backup

That doesnt really matter if you are using a different rom this time around especially a themed one. Sometimes it can help.... but if the rom is completely different like sense then to stock or CM, you gonna have issues no matter if you wipe or not. Are folks crazy? the system folder varies HEAVILY between different roms. sure you can TRY restoring just the data/cache/ext but that doesn't always work out right. Stick around, kid. You might learn something if you quit running you mouth
Calm down guys. . . . Nandroid works just fine. .
I have used it on an array of ROMs, Stock, Sense, CM . .It works. You just need to backup, then wipe and flash the ROM you want. If you want to go back to the other ROM, back up, then restore the one you backed up previously. You can even name them, you just have to change the folder name in the clockwork mod folder on your SD and look for backups.
Seems like there's a little confusion on how Nandroid works...I didn't understand it myself until recently. I'll attempt to explain how it works, if any experts think I got it wrong, please let me know.
Basically, Nandroid lets you backup your current phone's state (ROM, apps, settings and all) into a single save file that you can restore whenever you want. So as an example, let's say you install ROM X, but you want to try ROM Y. You would first make a Nandroid backup of your phone, then flash ROM Y. Then let's say after a day of playing around with ROM Y, you want to go back to ROM X, you would then make a Nandroid backup of ROM Y, and restore the Nandroid of ROM X. Your phone will then be exactly the way it was when you created the backup of ROM X, and at any time you want you can restore your ROM Y. In this way, you can bootup any ROM you've saved in the past, anytime you want. This makes Nandroid a fairly effective "multi-boot".
You might notice one slight pain in this whole process, the first time you use any particular ROM, you'll have to setup your phone all over again. This can be made easier if you use Titanium Backup, which is an app that backs up your apps and settings to your SD card. Then when you try out a new ROM, install Titanium Backup from the Market and use it to restore your apps and settings. If you're using the free version, this means tapping the screen twice for each app on your phone ("Install", "Done", repeat), but I noticed the paid version claims to have a "0-click restore" feature.
I hope this helps clarify some things.

That was a perfect explaination! I hope that sheds some light for folks who didnt understand what I meant and I apologize for being annoyed. originally, I had thought the OP was talking about dualbooting with android/windows mobile or something... I didnt think about the possiblity of running two android roms. I see how nandroid was brought up now... yeah, thats kind of silly to dualboot with two android roms. but to each his own...

i cant believe nobody agrees, i would love to have dual boot just like my my laptop with win7\ubuntu netbook remix. the iphone people are dual booting into android or Ios and thats kinda cool even if its not completly functional. Id rather dual than trying to restore back and forth. Good Call
I used the Nandroid method on the G2 to switch between SuperD's ROM and KingKlick's Eclair builds. It works and really does make a good "multi-boot." Also, I use MyBackup Pro to back everything up, and all the settings for the apps and the phone are saved.

Of course, I have to agree with you... There are several things that bother me about nandroid, which I say, is not a good replacement for dual-booting. With dual boot you can shut down your phone/computer and be able to switch between operating systems. I can use Windows 7 to play games, Ubuntu to code, and Mac OS X 10.5 for multimedia. I'm pretty sure that people don't backup Windows 7, wait for that to finish, then install Ubuntu on their computer, wait 20-30 minutes for it to boot up, then get to work(and I'm sure computers would be horrible if you needed to do that). But I'm just saying this so I can get into the conversation and actually get somebodies recognition so they can actually start working on a script for the G2 so you can dual-boot. I'm pretty sure that it's possible... but I'm not sure if there's anybody willing to do it.
Well that's accomplished by partitioning, on a pc.
whichever rom u install completely takes over the previous one, thus eliminating that previous rom. There would need to be some sort of partitioning mechanism, involved. to achieve the dualboot, wouldnt there?
correct me if i am wrong, but the hboot controls the partitions of the phones, and when the G1 needed a new hboot to be re-partitioned to allow for better bigger ROMs there were a LOT of bricks that took months to figure out how to fix, so if someone wants to try to flash the hboot from another phone(and risk losing their phone forever) then by all means have at it, but for the time being nandroid will have to do.
Yes i am new to the rooting scene so please bare with me. When the new unrevoked is released, i will be using it to root my phone. Ive been researching things ahead of times, and just recently became interested in applying a custom rom. To my knowledge, from what ive read, u must wipe the phone before u apply the rom in order to avoid running into any problems. Obviously u would make a nandroid backup first, but once the rom is applied everything would be missing, correct? I think im missing something here, but im just confused one what can be restored on the new rom and how....yet again i apologize but better to ask then rush in and regret it, backup or not. Thanks you.

I use and recommend Titanium Backup to backup and restore all of the downloaded apps. I've heard you're not supposed to restore system apps and their data, just chose app only. I'm almost 100% sure that you can restore user (downloaded) apps with data and not have problems. I've always done that and have had no problems as of yet. Anything else you need cleared up?
Sent from my Droid Incredible running Myn's Warm Two Point Two RLS4.
Everything will make sense once you root and physically go through the steps, instead of "studying".
Rule #1 is wipe data and cache before applying a new rom. Sometimes if going from one Rom to an update of the same ROM, you dont have to, but it never hurts.
Rule #2 Always create a back-up. I like to use Rom Manager to do this because you can name the file easily, instead of a date/time
Rule #3 When applying a theme, you dont wipe.
For me I dont usually use Titanium backup to restore on the incredible, mainly because the market is so fast on this and I dont have tons of apps. But, as said earlier, you can restore the market apps with no negative consequences, just may run into problems with restoring system apps and data.
Oh yeah, Rule #4 Have Fun, and tell the significant other that it could be worse. You could be out drinking or womanizing
Thanks to both of you, haha i feel better now...ill make sure and post some screenshots with the final product

I've been rooted with unrevoked3 (and I have verified that I have S-Off) for a few months now and I've gotten at least a decent feel for what you can do with a rooted evo. I've gotten used to a few adb terminal commands also. The next big thing that I'm trying to do is install a cyanogenmod 6 rom on it (and eventually update it to 7 after it's no longer a nightly). I've already done a nandroid backup, titanium backup, and I have a copy of my RSA keys. I've read through the installation instructions for cyanogenmod 6 (http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=HTC_Evo_4G:_Full_Update_Guide) and it mentioned flashing the radio. I'm not worried about doing that part, but I want to know if the changes that I make to it will be reversible or not if I decide that I don't like cyanogenmod. Finally, if there's anything that I'm missing, or if there's an easier way to do this other than the link I posted, any advice/tips would be great.

+1 sounds like you've done your homework.....you can go right back to your nandroid in the very small chance you don't like CM.... and when you restore your nandroid it will be as if you never changed anything in the first place...
The radio is a two step process. It will flash in recovery and then reboot and finish writing the radio. You have to let the second part complete or you will brick your phone.
Quick question based on the OP's question: Do we have to update radios when we flash a new rom? I was also looking to install CM7 as my first flashed rom today. I already have the most current radios, as my phone is only a couple weeks old, and has all the sprint updates. I am rooted just running the stock rom for right now, so do I have to flash radios even though they are the same version that I have now?
You don't HAVE to update the radios to the latest. I haven't updated either since I received my new Evo. "If it ain't broke ...." Could just give the ROM a go and see what happens. If you feel like it's necessary you can give it a shot. You can always go back if a new one doesn't appear to be working as well. It's not required, and it's not "un doable."

Yea if you get slow internet or bad service a fresh radio flash can't hurt. But as it was said earlier, let the radios flash! I screwed up and pulled my battery because I thought it wasn't working but all I did was end up breaking my rsa keys.

Yea I believe only 3.70 requires you to have the new radios other than that just enjoy life nandroid and flash away. Like said earlier "if it aint broke" and since mine are working fine I have not updated my radios and the fact that I run Gingerbread and not one of these new 3.70 roms makes my decision easy.

If you made a nandroid before switching, the nandroid will save EVERYTHING, including your apps. So if you want to switch back and forth, make a new Nandroid for CM (make sure you know which one is which), then you can boot into recovery and restore the old one, and restore the CM one whenever you want. No need to use titanium once you have made a nandroid.
Awesome. I said what the heck and experimented and found out I could do that yesterday. The one last thing that I'm trying to do now is to backup all of my sms to the sd card so I can restore them in cm. I'm gonna search around for an app for now until someone points me in the right direction.

You can use mybackup pro or titanium backup
Sorry, wrong thread.
So, I have had a SGS2 since it came out, running rooted, had a few different ROMs and back to stock ROM for a while now with overclocked bullet Kernel. BUT, today I bought myself a brand spankin' new white beauty T989. Now, I have gotten my original SGS2 to my perfect liking, arrangement, apps, etc. So I want to transfer my old SGS2 exactly the way it is to my new SGS2. Question is- can this easily be done? or should I just root the new one, flash the kernel, and use titanium back-up to get-back all of my apps?
The way I was thinking of doing it was by doing a full backup of my old phone with Clockwork to the SD card and simply popping the SD card in the new SGS2 and restoring on the new phone with Clockwork.
That's what I was thinking also

I would first do a clean factory reset on the new phone, and use Odin to install a CWM recovery and root first to make sure all is peachy, and THEN try to move over and restore the old nandroid. Should work! I'm not a pro though lol

This is what I'm about to sit and do. I think if I make a back-up of stock first on the new one with CWM, then I should have nothing to lose in testing out if a transfer like this will work. My only concern is if there is device specific data in the back-up that would either cause issues or prevent it all together.
My guess would be.. Nandroid with CWM

I didn't have any force closes on the new device. It ran perfectly, used it for a few days then flashed a fresh custom ROM. Worked perfectly as if I were still on the original phone during the few days I used it. ..So yes, I would recommend this if you want to have your phone remain exactly as it was. Only to clone to the same model phone though!

This is exactly what I did, worked perfect. Its been running this way for over a month now with no issues.
Please forgive me if this is in the wrong spot or if I broke some forum rule, I have never posted here but I have read a ton, thanks for all the help you guys have posted by the way.
First off I am not by any means an expert on computers and rooting but I have a decent understanding of the basics and can easily follow online instructions to root. I obviously have a d2att, I recently rooted it. I was happy with it unrooted for nearly a year but when samsung released the 4.3 update my phone really started sucking. Eventually I decided to root just to get a rom that functions better. I have been running gummy rom kit kat, I think its the nightly from march 10th, I have had no real issues other than some random reboots here and there. My mom begged me to root her d2att because she also was tired of the buggy samsung 4.3 update. I eventually rooted hers, even though I really didn't want to, knowing that I would get calls about every little issue and I would have to run and fix it... anyway
She has had issues that I have not had, she says that her phone randomly turns to silent periodically and causes her to miss calls, and she also says her bluetooth is intermittent. I don't use blue tooth at all so I wouldn't know but I have not had an issue with randomly going to silent. I have tried a lot of custom roms over the past 2 months since I rooted, including CM11, CM10 (all of them), AOKP, slimroms, of course Gummy, and a variety of others. All of them have had some major bug that is unbearable, from not connecting to wifi or not sending and receiving MMS, except for gummy which I have only had the random reboots.
Okay, so when I rooted mine originally I made a nandroid copy of the original rom after I rooted it, I didn't realize but somehow this nandroid file created to my internal memory instead of my sd card, so when I loaded a custom rom it was deleted. Like I said I'm far from an expert and that was a huge mistake. So anyway when I rooted my moms (same phone) I made a nandroid of her stock rom after the root and saved it to my computer, tablet, flash drive, external hd... etc.
Now that she is having problems with the absolute best ROM that I have found functionality wise, I thought I would restore her stock rom and debloat it, try my best to get it running better. I used her nandroid back up and restored my phone to it, only to get a ton of errors, everything was force closing. I kept getting the popups that "unfortunately ... has stopped" they were nonstop. Literally all I could do was hit ok and try to do the same with the next window, finally I get rid of those and the phone wouldn't run any apps or make any calls etc. So I rebooted to recovery and went restored my nandroid that I made earlier that day and all is fine with my phone again.
So here is my questions. First off when I made the nandroid of her stock rom I renamed the file STOCKROM, that way I would def know what it is and to not delete it. Will renaming a nandroid file make it not work correctly?
Also would a nandroid back up of her phone simply not work correctly on mine? I thought it would but it def does not. Maybe there is saved data that doesn't match my sim card.. I have no clue.
If I used this nandroid on her phone do you think it will work corretly?
If I messed up the file be renaming it, does anyone have a backup for stock that I can possibly use?
Last but not least, any recommendations for custom roms for d2att? I really just want speed, and no bugs
I am really sorry about the excessively long post, but I wanted to fill in the background info before I asked my questions, in case it was needed. Any help at all will be greatly appreciated.
Again please forgive me if I broke a forum rule or posted in the wrong spot, I don't typically post on any forums ever, I just tend to read the posts of others. THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR ANY AND ALL HELP, GREATLY APPRECIATED.

I've never had to use a nandroid and definitely have not tried one on a phone different from where it was made, but from reading in the past I don't believe that renaming it is causing the problem. I believe it is probably due to either trying it on a different phone or the file structure may have been changed when you moved it to the pc. Hopefully someone more experienced will chime in regarding the nandroid on your phone. If it is still on her phone I think it may work.
thanks

Thanks for the tips. I know its still on her phone and the name hasnt been altered. I wanted ti try a debloated touch wiz for her. I havr liked Gummy but loaded a carbon jelly beam tonight. So far so good. Any suggestions for custom ROMs for attd2? I have had a time finding one bthats useful. I'm glad I have my gummy on nandroid. When I finish screwing around for her that's where I'll head back to I'm sure. Unless I find a sweet bug free ROM through a reccomendation. I'll check the link in the AM thanks for the reply.

[ROM] Intergalactic v4.1 [AllianceRom][UCUEMJB][4.3][1/8/2014]
question
You MUST have the UCUEMJB or UCUEMJ2 bootloader and the UCUEMJB modem installed before proceeding or this ROM will not work properly. Your data and wifi may be broken if you do not do this first. These are available here: Bootloader and Modem Options

Quick question. I have only rooted and flashed cm toms and aokp. I haven't done anything specifically to change my boatloadsoor kernel. I really don't have the knowledge absolute that. The first step says what's listed above. What does this mean? Can you help? Thanks for the time and tips.
