[Q] Installing srf 1.2 and ClockworkMod - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was on srf 1.0.2 and my 4g stopped working so I decided to upgrade. Since my 4g wasn't working I decided to go back to stock 1st and odined my eb13 tar and then received the EC05 OTA update.
The only computer currently available to me is my work laptop and now the McAfee doesn't like the rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin file and immediately deletes it. I tried disabling the antivirus and not available through the options and it won't let me stop the service through services.msc or kill them in task mgr.
I noticed that 3.1.0.1 has a tar upgrade for odin but not the initial one click installer and I think from instructions that I need to start out with 3.0.2.5 version for srf 1.2 and then upgrade (not sure why).
It seem like the antivirus cannot look into the tar file but seems to delete right away from .zips. Any ideas?

Maybe you can try MasterKey unlocker from the Bonsai group?
http://www.bonsaigeek.com/content/bonsai-masterkey-unlocker-v110
I've not used it yet but perhaps it goes about it differently and wont trip the anti-virus software
Worth a shot

I guess my end goal is to be on EC05 stock and rooted with CWM 3.1.0.1 purple so I can flash ACS SRF 1.2.
I used the following
Stock EC05 Tar Prerooted Deodexed Zipaligned Png Optimized - http://www.multiupload.com/HZP1LRIKBS
from this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1021305
So I am now on EC05 rfs file system but with CWM 2.5
I am wondering now if I can flash this zip
[ROM][STOCK]ReRFS Format Stock ROM EC05 v1.01 w/ CWM3.1.0.1
from this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1027904&highlight=EC05
I am not on ext4 though so I don't know if I use it anyway or I need to convert rfs to ext4 then use it

I odin to stock ec05, odin cwm 3.1.0.1, and just flashed srf 1.2. I read that sfr1.2 will auto convert to ext4, and it hasn't caused me any issues so far.

You can use the 3.0.0.6 CWM then flash purple 3.1.0.1. My steps...Odin to stock EB13, update to EC05, used the one click that gave me CWM 3.0.0.6, reboot to convert to EXT4, flash purple 3.1.0.1, wipe everything 3x, flash SRF 1.2, immediately flash a kernel, reboot and enjoy!

I think I have to try what volkly said to try. I am unable to run any One-click because of my virus scanner. I can only odin or flash from my sd card once rooted.

Not trying to be a jerk or anything... but why can't you just temporarily disable your virus scanner?

It sounds like the corporate ver of McAfee, which you can't temporarily disable anymore, you have to either uninstall it or boot into safe mode and msconfig disable all the mcafee startup services/processes. (I know, I'm stuck dealing with the same McAfee issues at work too.) But you shouldn't have to mess with any one click root when you odin the stock files, then the CWM 3.1.0.1 files, then just drop SRF 1.2 and a kernel of choice on your sd card and be good to go.

Can you add an exclusion to a parent folder, like your downloads folder, and then unzip the file to that location?

Correct, I tried to temp disable and other methods but the UI is locked down. I Odined EC05 and then CWM 3.1.0.1 then did SRF1.2 and TW 1.1.1 from CWM on sd card so all is resolved and running.

[Q] Help flashing [ROM]Bonsai4All EXT4/Clockworks 3.0.0.5 support V2.0.1 >02/03/2011
Ok guys, im gonna attempt a flash([ROM]Bonsai4All EXT4/Clockworks 3.0.0.5 support V2.0.1 >02/03/2011) today on my friends samsung epic 4g which is fully stock at the moment, i already have read the instructions but i need a little guidance in the right direction. I have flashed clockworkmodrecovery using
http://http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=782300
& http://http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7933592#post7933592
so now i can boot into clockworkmod recovery, but b4 i flash anything im going to do a backup through the clockworkmod recovery, i read in the Bonsai4All thread that i need to "Odin the dk28 modem first", can someone tell me how i can do that, like give me a link to the required files and how i would go about installing them. Also is there anything else that i am not doing that is required to flash to the Bonsai4All ROM from a stock samsung epic 4g , all feedback is greatly appreciated, thanks in advance guys.
This is the Epic wiki. Scroll down to Odin Stock Flashing and follow those instructions. Under Official Roms (just above Odin Stock Flashing) is the dk28 file. It's titled 'SPH-D700-DK28-8Gb-REL.tar.md5 Stock DK28 (Leaked).' That's what you put in Odin to flash to stock dk28. Scroll down further to Community Roms and you will see the Bonsai4All rom. Once you are on stock dk28, have cwm3 installed, and download the Bonsai rom to the SDcard, you can flash Bonsai through cwm.

The wiki says I have to "Select the victory_8G_100528.pit on the right in the pit section" on step number 4, do I have to do that to flash to Bonsai, or do I just do what you told me.

When I flashed to stock dk28 , I used the Victory pit along with the SPH-D700-DK28.tar. So, I would do both.
I have used it without victory BUT I was already on dk28. I had a 2.2 rom and I was flashing back to stock dk28.
So, final answer, for the first time going to dk28, I would use both the pit and tar.
On a side note, make sure only the reset time and auto-reboot check boxed are checked. There shoud be three total check boxes. For the first time, only check those. If you install a rom and want to go back to stock dk28 in the future, then only check auto-reboot.
So basically what you're saying. Is all that I really need to do is substitute the dk28 tar u told me instead of the one used on step 5?

ok, one more question before i begin is, do i backup with clockworkmodrecovery before i flash dk28, or if im correct the flash will delete everything including root, and upgrade the phone to 2.2, so the backup would be irrelevant until b4 i flash the bonasi?

Yes, using flash with ODIN will erase everything including root. So, backup everything before you start. It should backup to your SDcard. When you do the stock flash, root, install cwm3 and flash your 2.2 based rom, you should be able to boot into cwm, go to backup/restore- advanced restore and restore data.
I would install My Backup or something similar before attempting though. Just in case cwm doesn't keep your backup after the flash. It's worked for me in the past. After backup, you can also move the backup file to your computer's hard drive for safekeeping. It's in the root of the sd folder under Clockwork recovery.
thumbs up picking bonsai rom. ive tried midnight, viper, nebula already and none of them even compare to the speeds of bonsai. if your going for speed and no force closes choose bonsai.
to kind of answer your question, always backup, it wont hurt anything.

ok, thanks, i think i got the steps down, after i have this installed, i root it using(insert link and awesome advice here)?
I'm on my phone now so I can't see the links and so forth. I think the bonsai rom will install root, cwm, convert to ext 4 file system and install bonsai. Double check the rom thread though. If not, theres a one-click root w/ cwm3 in the dev section

So what you will have to do is flash the ReRFS rom to get back to RFS. Then run the one-click with cwm 2.5.1.0. Then flash that di18 from my previous post.
Basically, you have to reverse the process of how you got to where you are.
Here's a list of the steps and what you will have at each point.
Build - File System - CWM version - next step
1. DK28 - ext4 - cwm3 - Flash ReRFS
2. DK28 - RFS - cwm3 - Reinstall cwm 2.5.1.0 (via one click or manually)
3. DK28 - RFS - cwm 2.5.1.0 - Flash DI18 with modem
4. DI18 - RFS - cwm 2.5.1.0 - Flash Dameon's pre-rooted EB13
5. EB13 - RFS - cwm 2.5.1.0 - Finished. Until you want to install something else, that is.
Use the .exe file from samsung. It works just fine from dk28 regardless of what your running. It will wipe everything but your going to want to do that anyway. It worked just fine for me.

Question re Clockword Mod Update for Samsung Epic

I tried to post this on the actual thread about this Update, but I was not allowed because I had not posted 10 times previously.
Anyway, I am new to rooting Android phones….new to android phones for that matter. I have had the Samsung Epic 4G for about a month. I have been looking into rooting the phone, finally decided to go for it. I downloaded the filre for Clockwork Mod version 3.0.0.5/6 - UPDATED FOR EB13 from this site. After doing one run of that bat file and getting stuck on the startup screen, I realized I needed to find a compatible ROM and Kernel and install them before rebooting.
I reset the phone to default settings, using the info on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=909384 and then I used the kernel
from the original update thread, Default Stock Dual FS kernel For EB13, and the Bonzai ROM from their website. This time, the install worked properly, and when my phone rebooted, the firmware is listed as Bonsai/Kernel_v4.01. So I wanted to backup and uninstall some Samsung Bloatware from the phone, and as I understand it, the Titanium Backup is the best way to do it. Well, I installed it, and it has consistently said the program could not acquire root status. I clicked on the “problems” icon, got busybox and upgraded superuse, and that did not effect anything. I even reflashed the Bonzai Rom, but the end result is the same, I am still getting that same message. Since I have replaced my Rom and have installed Superuser, I have to assume I have rooted the phone, so what could be the problem here? The app SetCPU also says I do not have Root Access. So I am not sure what to do at this point.
Sounds like a failed root:
Root again with the oneclick 3.0.0.6, power off, 3 finger boot and ext4 will be put on automatically. After ext4 installs install bonsai before rebooting.
Sent from Bonsai 7.0.3
Is there a difference between onclick 3.0.0.6 and the one in the thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=897612,which is labelled 3.0.0.5/6? Because, if not, that is pretty much what I have done already.
Same one.
I would odin to eb13, odin ec05 modem, root, boot to recovery and allow ext4, flash bonsai 4.0.1. Can't remember if 4.0.1 adds ec05 modem during flash, but if it does you can skip the ec05 odin (sorrry, but my mind has been on 4.1.0 for the last week).
The odin process will get rid of the kernel you currently have. Flashing the rom doesn't do anything to the kernel. The odin process will give you a nice clean slate to workv with. If your phone wants to do an ec05 OTA update during this process please tell it later and don't do it.
Suggest you peruse the Bonsai Forum as you will find a lot of treats that will be able to help you. Http://www.bonsaigeeks.com

I think you can't flash froyo over gb. I say that because when I was on cm7 a4 I tried it and it failed. The only options are nandroid back or odin. If stock gb is different I'd really like to be corrected.
I can't get CWM to go on my phone. It's not on there at all.
* I'm not even able to do a regular reset or wipe. I rooted with Gingerbreak.
Then I guess you're going to have to ODIN EC05 then flash SFR 1.1.0 from there.

CWM Freeze on reBoot, Odin no Dice

When I tried to switch from ACS EI22 4 to 5 my phone force close looped because of some issue with launcher pro. I went to reflash the rom from CWM and ever since my phone won't properly load roms from CWM. When the phone has a custom rom it boots right to CWM when I power them up only to freeze again when I try to boot the rom from recovery.
I have Odined to stock EC05, and one click flashed CWM. I have flashed pre-rooted EC05 roms. I Odined to EI22 & EC05 modem Tar and went on to install ACS recovery over CWM.
I have Odined multiple times on multiple stock roms and custom roms. The problem persists. Once I'm in recovery (I've tried 3 versions) and I click "reboot" the phone locks with a black screen with the home buttons on or an image of the clockwork logo (depending on which version I'm trying).
The strange thing is, all of the stock roms work just fine and I was able to install EI22 from OTA with no problems. But who wants that icky CIQ? or Sprint nascar/football/bloatware? Yuck!
I've had some limited success with simple pre-rooted deodex etc roms I flash from Odin, but sometimes recovery loads when I power up the phone. And sprint keeps wanting to force the update on me.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I've tried everything I can think of and have searched, to no avail, for a solution.
Does anyone think this is a hardware issue? One of the kernels I tried on ACS 5 was a beta.
If so, how should I go about getting it fixed since it is under warranty. I do have accidental damage coverage.
Most likely not hardware related. I say that because you said you can run stock just fine.
I would try the new CWM5 just released and see if the problem is still there.

That's what I thought and why I continued to Odin and one-click root different types of CWM and ACS recovery.
I'm going to see if the repair store nearby can run a diagnostic. Otherwise I'm going to stay away from any modifications that require me to use CWM for anything since I was able to Odin a custom rom (but it was EC05).
Hopefully Samsung will release the EI22 modem tar and someone will release a pre-rooted version that I can Odin.
I tried odin flashing different recoveries yesterday. Odin gave them a pass but they wouldn't boot from the 3 finger salute (like they didn't install).
I've never tried to install CWM this way so I'm not sure if you need to be rooted before hand or you need a specific kernel.

So it goes back into stock recovery with 3 finger? Easiest fix is Odin in a prerooted EC05 ROM tar like EC05plus then flash a Gingerbread ROM then flash the modem delta.

Yes it goes into stock recovery. Unfortunately flashing in CWM has been the problem that lead me to flashing CWM through Odin. For more detail see the original post. Whenever I try to flash something through CWM the recovery has problems and it fails to load the rom that is installed.
I'm trying as many alternatives to pinpoint the problem. I'm going to try switching SD cards and see if the problem resulted from some kind of data corruption there. Should have an update on that sometime tonight.
If I can't figure out and fix the problem I'll be at the mercy of sprint or if I want root I'll have to wait for a pre-rooted EI22 rom complete with modem tarball so I can odin that.
I saw the OP but didn't see where you Odin'd a prerooted EC05 ROM like EC05plus. Then flash a GB ROM right after. Just 2 steps. Then if you want the modem one more step to flash the delta. It's worth a shot?

Thanks, you too.
So if Odining the EC05Plus ROM didn't get you a working 3 finger salute CWM, then maybe you should try ROM Manager and downloading CWM 5.X.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1357655
It must be a hardware problem. I can odin a rom with CWM and it will boot fine. However if I ever try to open CWM the rom will never load again as the phone boots to recovery and get's stuck there.
I confirmed this by Odin flashing and then going into clockwork and not even flashing anything and it got stuck. Flashing in CWM will actually install things as I can change CWM within CWM but I still get stuck when trying to load the rom.
So the only way for me to enjoy a rooted phone is to refrain from CWM recovery.
I went back to a EH17 odined pre-rooted rom. When EI22 gets a modem tar hopefully someone will make a pre-rooted, deodexed, zipaligned odin tar (and if I'm lucky, CiQ will be removed).
Otherwise I'd like to get a replacement but explaining the problem to sprint is kind of a catch 22 since the issue only appears when I load a custom recovery.
How about flashing CWM 5.027 and downloading ROM Manager and installing 5.027 through that as well. Rom Manager actually downloads the CWM 5 and keeps it packed on your sd card and installs it everytime you use it. It allows ROM Manager to be able to update the CWM whenever a new version comes out.
