Are there any info on a possible launch of the official Gingerbread update for the Defy (not counting the leaked beta)?
Maybe it will be released on Q3 ( by the end of september ).
There's not an official news yet.
I can confirm the previous gb leaks are for a newer model soon to be released. The only changes are the color, battery and 1ghz CPU.
It's unclear whether or not our old model will get the same update.

In fact. If you flash the latest leaked GB firmware, you'll see that it shows "MB526" as model number. Maybe it's not a big change (I mean, Droid was A853, and Droid 2 is A955 - that's a huge variation, comparing to MB525 vs MB526), but it's probably a different piece of hardware that the ones we have now.
OR, it could be that they're relabeling the current Defy (red lens) to MB526 to officialize its difference from the old Defy (green lens). But that's just a far guess, based only in what I think.

Or.. it may be a big change!
everyone knows Samsung Galaxy S (I9000) isn't it? It has a 1Ghz Processor..
But Samsung released the Samsung Galaxy S Plus (I9001) which has a 1.4GHZ Processor!!
So there might a a great improvement in the new Model, Maybe better screen, etc

No, it's not the case here. I do have the specs and pics of the new piece. It's intended as a silent (and low cost) replacement of the old MB525.
1GHz OMAP"3620", silver, ~1700mAh and that's about it.
may i ask where yoh got the specs?

So maybe we won't get it at all? Seems strange to only offer the Gingerbread update to those who buy a possible brand new version of the Defy.

it seems that this will be more downgrade then upgrade from current Defy.
3620vs 3630..
It will be released this week.........in a parallel universe
i think, we will never get gb for defy( at least from carriers), and we do not need it because we have MIUI and CM7 wich are gingerbread 2.3.4.

Show me one official document that shows Defy is marketed as 3630.
Sent from my MB860
When you connected to rsd lite in bootloader mode it will detect the cpu signature....and for defy its omap 3630
also there is a link here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=917000
from where did you get the pics and specs? can you post the pics? and i dont think theres gonna be an update exclusively for red lensed defy. and it would be stupid to come out with a new defy just for gb with higher cpu speed (our omap 3630 can handle 1.2ghz at default...)

Well since you can't prove your words, racca, can you hint at least date when new Defy will be shown?
People stop asking for pictures as you won't get any at the moment. No one is stupid to make them public for obvious reasons (nondisclosure agreements). For sure there will be a new Defy launched by Moto in the future. As for the Gingerbread official update I don't think we will ever see it for Defy. In addition please take a look at the sloppy and slow Froyo upgrade process.
we may just be lucky if the bootloader will be unlocked on the new defy, maybe it will be compatible with our hardware (and it should be )
why are you so sure there wont be a gb update, there are leaked versions!

the defy actually has a 3610 with an sgx530 gpu, its not a 3630 according to motorola. and our cpu can easily handle up to 1.2ghz, dunno why they had to replace it. maybe 3620 sounds/looks better, and they had to change something in the defy+... btw, does anybody know whether the defy+ roms will be compatible with a bayer defy?

An omap3620 instead of 3610... I wouldn't call it an upgrade, they're are not much different, both CPUs support 1ghz clock speed while 3610 is underclocked.. so, once we "OC" our Defy to 1Ghz we get something like a Defy+
Well, not bad, i'll save some money.

I don't think so...
Green lens aren't sell anymore, as they've been replaced with red lenses ( bayer ).
it doesnt sell with defy. but it does in iphone. so you cant be sure its older...
The iPhone 4 was firstly released June 24th 2010 so i do not think that it is possible to say that because the same sensor is used in the iPhone that thats why the green lens is newer.
But all leaked ROM's only work with RED lens camera so i think that the Defy+ will most likely be with that. Why would you make ROM's and afterwards change the camera and build new drivers in for that?
Good choice for android newbies, but so far my defy rocks already to me.
DEFY+ might be the same defy red lens phone...with GB....whatever might be the CPU we have TI 3630 currently which is bluffed by moto as TI 3610...jus need roms and sbf to flash on..!! waiting for the new leaks..
our defy is definitely has 3630..i still have no idea why dint they tell us the truth..maybe they had plans to make defy+ that time only..defy+ is actually a downgraded version of our defy, which will only have red lens (sad news for green lens users like me as those ROM wont support green lens)
even green lens has very good capabilities but its performance is limited to the software..we can see that in iphone 4 camera quality.
The defy will not be the first product that is placed in a position by marketing that is on a different level than what the technical staff built. It will also be no surprise of the defy+ turns out to meet an operator requirement instead of being what moto wants to build independently.
Sent from my MB525 using XDA Premium App
I have to correct myself: the green defy lens is a ov5642 while the one in iphone 4 is ov5650. but according to the datasheets both support hd (or even fullhd) recording, so i dont get why they replaced it with the red lens (of which we dont even know the product id...).
According to Racca (a member here at XDA who has contacts with Motorola distributors), Defy+ will be pretty much the same as the model we have by now. The differences will be aesthetic (new cover: the "outer ring" - where the buttons and screws are located - wil be silver, with bordeaux or purple buttons/battery locker - screen pannel, the phone jack cover, MicroUSB cover and battery cover will remain black), and it'll have a slightly better battery (1700mAh). Also, yeah, our Defys all have OMAP 3630 (it's recognized many times in pieces of code, logs and also in RSD Lite), even though Moto says it's a 3610. Unfortunately, there's nothing we can do about this. Since we can NOT install ROMs made for phones with different hardware, no matter how slight are those differences (i.e.: Droid 2/Milestone 2 is almost identical to Defy in its inner parts - same screen, same camera module, same RAM modules... Except for the obvious differences, like the keyboard - which the pairs Quench/Cliq and T-Mo G1/MyTouch 3G shows that's not a hindrance to install ROMs, since they have same hardware, with Quench and MT3G lacking the keyboard and being able to receive Cliq and G1 ROMs - they're nearly identical, but some key components - like the mobo - are different) without some adaptation (many Defy ROMs are adapted Droid 2/Milestone 2 ROMs, with drivers changed and some pieces of coded edited to allow the flashing), the possibility to flash a SBF that is meant for Defy+ in a normal Defy without ANY modding is a clear proof, IMHO, that they also share the same CPU.
So, just to sum up: Defy+ is NOT going a new model (for our purposes). They'll just give it a new battery and some paintjob, and sell it as a whole new phone. Since we know our CPU can handle up to 1.35 GHz (not THAT stable, but I'm running my Defy at 1.3 without problems for a couple of weeks, now), 1GHz at a new model won't be anything new to us. Since we know the CPU is an OMAP 3630, there's no sense for us to believe they'll actually put a 3620 on Defy+. Finally, since the ROMs meant for Defy+ are completely flashable WITHOUT ANY WORKOUTS NEEDED (just plug the phone in RSD Lite and flash the SBF) in the current Defy, I think we have reasons to believe no actual upgrade is going to happen. Racca also told that they won't make any noise about the "new" model (which is good, because the Defy dev community would get REALLY upset if they announced it as a "whole new" replacement for the current Defy).
P.S.: Related, but not meaningful: Racca also said that, along with all the new mid and high end phones that Motorola released in the past 2 weeks, they were considering to equip Defy+ with 1GB RAM - which would be nice, but still, at least for me, not a reason to get a new device.
P.S. 2: In this page from official Motorola website, they say that Defy has a 3610 CPU, and PowerVR SGX 530. But, in this document from Texas Instruments (manufacturer of the OMAP processors), they say clearly that the 3610 has NO graphics accelerator, which is available only in 3620 and higher models. Also, Defy has IVA (Image, video and audio acceleration) 2+ (since it can record and playback 720p coded at h.264 - even though it's only available with hacking, the simple fact that it is available states that it is NO hardware limitation), which is not available in 3610 NOR in 3620, leaving us with 3630 as the only option of CPU for the Defy.
i'm looking at this phone, does it have problems? were the defy- problems corrected?
But this phone looks really slow, REALLLY slow, i thought my windows phone was slow but this...
can you make a video where animations are off, and start some apps: calls, messaging internet settings?
it'd be greatly appreciated
I can fully recommend this Device, who told you its slow? I believe the OMAP3630 Chipset is one of the fastest 1GHz-chipsets. There are many vids on YouTube, with Defy+ where you can See the performance.
i watched videos , but in all of them animations were enabled, is it possible to disable them?
if so , i want to see if the speed increases
part of the reason i want to move from wp7 to android is speed- productivity
if you have the device and it wouldnt be too difficult , can you post a video? 1 min is enough
or can you at least say if the apps open faster?
No way, the Defy plus is very fast.
Great processor!
ok, and a good price, especially like the ruggedness and battery
What are you guys discussing, both have the same hardware with the defy+ at 1GHz instead of 800mhz and stock gingerbread.
The same can be achieved on defy easily by rooting
Sent from my MB525 using Tapatalk

Regarding speed: speed is fine but you can turn animations off. Only thing is that capacitive buttons are not as responsive as hardware buttons. Same as other phones with capacitive buttons.
I have not owned another Android phone to give you a comparison with. It kicks arse over my HTC Topaz.

Not quite the same hardware as the battery is is bigger (1700mAh not 1500mAh).
Software wise it is Android 2.3.4 and a different version of Motoblur (less intrusive and probably lighter).
I think if you had a Defy you would speed up the processor and upgrade to 2.3.4 though.
-----------------
Anyway here is my assessment:
Pros:
- great size phone for a 3.7 inch screen (you will not find something else with that small width and height)
- dust proof
- water resistant (you can use it under water even if Motorola do not recommend it
- it has some shock proof rating thing (solid build with gorilla glass too)
- 2.3.4 with a 1000mhz processor has pretty good performance
- you do not have to use Motoblur (or any other mandatory interface)
- the phone looks really nice and feels really solid. I mountain-bike with it and will also snowboard with it with no additional protection
- in fairness to Motoblur they do offer some nice functionality for backing up your phone and even remotely finding your phone or deleting data from it (I still opted out though).
Cons:
- power connection is on the side (and is not opposite the volume buttons which limits car holder options a bit)
- may not get an Icecream upgrade due to GPU
- the fact that Motoblur is even on the phone in the first place
- capacitive buttons can be a little unresponsive at times (not helped by me coming from a WM phone and using my nail instead of the end of my finger)
I've seen a couple people say "they fixed the problems with the original defy in the defy+." What do they mean by this exactly? It seems like the hardware is mostly the same so I can only assume they mean the casing? Were there some sort of flaws with it?

Probably 2 things:
1) The Defy was slightly under powered
2) The older version of Motoblur was too intrusive
Both issues can be fixed by modding the Defy. Just the difference in battery.
no, its ear speaker failed too frequently
The earpiece problem was fixed in later production runs of the Defy, you didn't need to wait for the Defy+.
I'm curious what Defy+ owners get on a quadrant score.
On a standard Defy 2.2.1 it gets around 1000. With 1.1ghz it gets about 1350.
I like this phone so much that I'm lookin to pick up an unlocked Defy+ to keep for when my current one goes bad.

So, just to get this straight, I presume the Defy + only does data on the standard 2100 frequency? In other words, it will not work on either T-Mo nor AT&T USA 3G?

I want to buy a defy but after the green /red lens situation.i am not sure about the future of green lens defy ? i don't want Good camera or 720p recording but will developers make further roms for defy as defy+ has been launched ?. I think that developers will make future rom's by taking defy+ in mind which have red lens.so chances are that further roms will get less and less comaptible with defy with green lens. Can developers give any detail on this that the defy+ will make no effect on the green len's defy owners and they will get developers always best services even in the future? I second this..get a Nexus instead. Just before you start building castles in the air by hoping for regular software updates from Motorola, just go visit their official support forum. There they have declared that there won't be any further software updates for the Defy and thats not just because of the green lens/SOC module issue but also because with GB Defy will come in direct competition with the Defy+. This is one of the many of Motorola's sleazy sales policies and they just don't give a rats ass about existing customers, period. You will be surprised how many petition posts are there on that forum from customers pleading for software updates. They just ignore those posts. And if you are thinking that perhaps getting a Defy+ instead of a Defy will mark the beginning of a beautiful friendship with the company, you are mistaken there too. Same thing will happen to the Defy+ with the release of Defy++ or Defy# or whatever.
I'll admit that the Defy is a good phone in terms of flexibility like rooting etc. because of its 'unbrickableness' due to the locked bootloader, but in terms of official updates its a nightmare. If your decision to go for the Defy was due to its ruggedness features then you could also consider the Xperia Active.
there are some options better than the defy... like nexus S
but the green leans (soc module) is the old module, new defys are coming with red lens (bayer module)..

you will care about updates when everyone around you will use ICS (android 4.0), and youre still on 2.1. nexus s already has official ICS, defy will never have it (and defy+ wont either afaik). nexus s has better cpu and much better gpu, so you wont have any lag, thats for sure. you wont see the difference between the two displays (the defy has a slightly higher resolution screen, but thats not that big of a difference), and the nexus has bigger sceen. internet works like magic on both phones. and one more thing: the nexus s has a built in nfc chip, the defy doesnt. cheers!

I have a green lens Defy so let me help answer ur question.
1. Yes no lag, on CM7 and GO launcher
2. Yes awesome resolution for its size, I havent a problem with it.
3. Internet works fine, 3G/HSDPA is fast, wifi not a problem...though some on nightlys wifi can be a problem. <---need some tweaking
So all in all, yes Defy is a great phone for your requirement with an added bonus of being more robust than others.
Though your requirements fits many other phones out there

Not according to Motorola. The official advice on the Motorola support forum for the Defy is as follows:
If you remove the battery you should see a label inside the battery compartment with a bar code and the words "Made in China". If the characters above "Made in China" include "BTxx" or "BFxx" then the phone should not be at risk of suffering the earpiece problem. Alternatively, if there is a blue dot on the label then the phone should also not be at risk.
So if your phone has "BTxx" or "BFxx", or a blue dot, then it doesn't have the fault. Bear in mind that there can be other reasons for the earpiece to fail, over and above the known fault which Motorola have acknowleged, so even a phone not in the "at risk" batch can still go wrong for other reasons eg mistreatment, or a one-off manufacturing error. Conversely, if your phone is in one of the suspect batches then it's not necessarily bound to break: my phone does not have any of the reassuring markings but the earpiece has been fine so far, touch wood.

well its not true that Nexus is around the same price as Defy+ ... f.e. amazon.de Nexus S - 296,66 EUR, Defy 228,90 EUR, Defy+ 237,89 EUR. If you want simmilar to Nexus S price, I would prefer SE Arc S. But diff between Defy+ and normal is too small, that I suggest to buy the newer stuff. And support is in the future - as Google said, that all devices with stock Gingerbread should get ICS too. We will see.
untill now i still can decide my defy got green or red lens even after read a thread about it
any other step that can i try?

defy+ roms are defy roms with excluded soc modules. so theyre not that different. and cyanogenmod (imho the absolutely best rom available) supports defy (but not the defy+). so you should be fine buying a defy, i have one, had no problems with it so far (we will definitely get ics with cm9). and from what ive heard/read, the defy+ wont even get official ics, so youre screwed with stock roms either way. get the defy, its significantly cheaper!

From Nexus to DEFY - I think DEFY can be defined as a phone against NEXUS
I am a proud user of LG Optimus one which s a fabulous phone due to dev support here @ XDA. I am thinking of buying DEFY. I have few questions.
1. Will Defy be a upgrade from LG optimus one?
2. I heard of earpiece failing problems. Is it prominent?
3. I am an audiophile . So i need an in ear earphones for Defy. Is ther any?
4. How s the dev support for defy. Does defy support well known roms such as oxygen, cm and MIUI?
5. I heard defy suffers because of locked bootloader? Is it curtail the development for this mobile?
6. Does defy have any other problems?
Thanks guyz. Awaiting response.
1) defy is definitely an upgrade from optimus one. It has much better hardware.
2) earpiece problem existed in the earlier models. Now they have fixed it.
3) the earphones (not in ear) provided with the phone is decent. If you don't like them maybe buy a senheiser.
4) dev support is really good. We have official cm and MIUI. Both are very stable.
5) we have had amazing development even with the locked bootloader. Devs have found workarounds but we can't boot custom kernels and this does limit the potential of this device.
6) if you buy a new defy now you will probably get one with green lens. It doesn't support 720p recording and has other incompatibility issues with defy with red lens. Although if you buy a defy+ you will get red lens and official ics update and still use the dev roms for defy.
I bet u there are better phones than defy out there...
Defy is now old!!
I don't say its a bad phone but Motorola sucks!!

get one ^^
Moto Moto [so good you say it twice]
overall is a great phone and the build quality is the best IMO as it go water resistance and scratch resistance...
If I look at it now, I would have bought a used nexus s. But defy is cheaper and I find it quite good for the money. Especially with CM7.

Defy is a good phone indeed but it's old now!
I think you should get some other phone and it's not the right moment to buy any motorola device since they're keeping on lying about bootloader matter.
I'm a proud 1 year Defy user looking to buy a Desire Z or something similar.
1. I cannot tell you more than the specs comparison would tell you. But if the screen is bigger than it is an upgrade (I wouldn't buy anything below 480*800
2. That was a problem of the first batches. By the time I bought mine (February 2011) it was already solved.
3. Any stereo headphone will work. I've tried 2 pairs of Apple, some Bose with mic from a Berry Torch, some Samsung that came with Galaxy S+. I use a pair of HeadDirect RE0 (without mic). If you're a big fan of good sound try RE0 or Phonak PFE221 or head over to head-fi.org for advice.
4./5. There are quite a few devs around here. Not too many, but very active. Sadly the locked bootloader keeps them behind (Desire Z already has AOSP ICS 4.0.3 for example). So giving the situation I can say that it is a very supported phone. So there is CM7.1, a few flavors of MIUI, a few modified originals and combinations.
6. At the moment I don't know of any major, wide spread problems.
I should also mention the green/red lens thingie:
Green: also called SoC, no 720p, common on Defy, drivers in 2.1 and 2.2 Moto ROMs
Red: also called Bayer, 720p capable, found on some Defy's and Defy+, drivers in 2.3 MotoROMs
LE: Hardware wise Defy is a great phone (one of the best price/quality) but the locked bootloader pisses me off. I am also looking forward to try a hardware querty.
I bought one of the first Defys released in the US (Nov 2010), Green lens and all. Have had zero issues that I could not sort myself. You might look at the Defy Plus as it has a faster processor and runs 2.3 out of the box (I believe). But, it does not have the t-mo 3G frequency.
I am a bit disappointed to have a phone from Motorola but Optimus one is just a crap if u compare it with defy.
Defy is at least 100 times better than optimus one in all aspect.
By Scott, pull the trigger...
I'm using the optima one titanium, and i would trade this any day for my defy back!!!
Ps.
Month old lg optimus p509 for sale/ trade, Motorola defy..
No scratches, pristine condition. Boxed with original gear, a well as two extra screen protectors, and the case i bought.
Original parts include ear buds, charge with cable as well as 4gb Sandisc micro card.
Phone still has first screen protector, and has never/ will never be overclocked!!!
Let me know

I guess you can answer this question asking yourself how much you have in the pocket.
For me, it's the best cost/benefit in the market, and I recomend it for everyone!
But if you can buy a brand new model with more 'skills' than the defy, go for it.
I recommend Defy, but HTC HD2 and NexusS also have great value...
IMHO, Defy and RAZR are the best quality made phones, take that as an advantage...

yeah but Nexus S build quality is not really as good as Defy's and honestly the back is just ugly (a bit better hardware though and Google support) Hd2 is a very good phone! Very good build quality, very good dev support (maybe the best) but Defy is Faster/Smooter (android native) and has better screen...
I heard that defy is old....yeah? Nexus S is as old as defy...hd2 is veeeery old but still a good phone... As long as you don't go for a dual core phone there's no need to change defy. Is as good as any single core phone on the market, no real/visible difference (performance wise)!

Source on official ICS update? motorola page says it will stay on 2.3
Defy is Great!
Defy is good to go with!
1) It is wtr proof, scratch proof, dust proof.
2) Speed is amazing in CM7 mode.
3) ICS is almost ready only HWA and Camrecoder are left to be fixed. it might be completed within few days for more info visit this thread.

No problem. As long as they just unlock the bootloader, as intended in Q4 2011, it's okay.
One word... Rage.
Why Pro+ is getting ICS with almost the same processor!!??

my UK Atrix isn't even getting it and has a dual core.
They should unlock boot loaders and give out all the lib and binary files for non supported devices.

Desire z with the g2 rom (asop) would be a great phone. Not a fan of sense.
All hope has gone that was the last nail on the coffin. I will always use cyan but would be nice for updated libs and bits.
Think now my defy and atrix arnt getting updates and never have. I wont be buying Motorola again. Love the hardware but blur sucks aand no updates is a real deal breaker.

Stupid
Just when we tought Moto's buy by Google will change smth. Maybe it's to early for that.
Regarding the update i think there are some minimal requirements for Android 4.0. And they give you the same bull**** Samsung and HTC gave. The hw does not support Android 4.0, the hardware does not support Android 4.0 with our interface.
But this doesn't make sense. Acording to their update schedule they release ICS for similar devices just because they are new. For example the original Atrix gets nothing inspite it's dual core, 1 GB RAM.
The human thing to do is open the bootloader. But that's not going to happen is it?
So goodbye Moto, welcome back HTC for me... I wll keep the defy because it' such a nice phone. Still the RAZR MAXX is great, i love the battery. Hope it doesn't even come to Europe so i won't regret not buying it.
motorolaaaaaaagh
This means not only Defy+ wont have ICS, but also not a single OS update for Defy+.... I'm really disappointed, Motorola...

for atrix it says right there: ICS Upgrade in planning. Further details to follow.
from this i understand that atrix will get ics later on.
the only thing we can do now is support for unlocked bootloader petition...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1426512&highlight=petition
that way we can help devs
Atleast defy+ guys can put Motorola in Mess by applying consumer courts because of there 18 months update policy.... But no hopes for Defy .....
