[Q] Sense 2.1/3.0 Rom common issues - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I've tried out MikG 2.2, Synergy nightlies and 6/27 RC1, Kingdom Revolution and Synergy-Kingdom and I seem to have the same two prevalent issues I could use some help with.
1.) I use the desk clock feature of my EVO in night mode. Problem is all these roms share a common problem, that being that for some reason the World Clock service will crash and take it out of night mode. Also not sure why but with standard EVO sense roms it immediately goes to the clock whereas with the sense 2.1/3.0 roms the screen dims but doesn't go to the night clock for somewhere around 10 minutes like on an aosp rom.
2.) I use google nav heavily. I make about 10-15 stops a day for work and need it always running. Problem is with sense 2.1/3.0 roms that for some reason I haven't been able to identify, the screen will dim randomly and ultimately shut off during navigation sessions. I have tried setting the screen to always on while charging, messed around with spare parts and set the brightness to manual and auto, disabled power saving features on the phone, all to no avail. The phone is constantly plugged in and mounted on my dash, so its always charging.
I keep no personal info on my phone, so when I wipe it for a rom, EVERYTHING is wiped. SDCard, Rotation and battery stats, data, cache, system, boot, everything. I do that once over, then mount it, format the sdcard with my computer, then copy vr_superwipe and flash that to wipe it all again, then remount, format again on computer, unmount and go through the wipe list again, then remount and copy over whatever rom I am installing and start the flashing process. I use AmonRa 2.3 as I have had issues in the past with clockwork not wiping properly. I never punch in my google account until I can disable restore features. I have tried the desktop clock and google nav on a freshly installed version of each of those roms with touching nothing else and also with full profile and all that, they still do what they do.
So my question is to the community, am I overlooking something or does anyone have any ideas for me? I wanted to hit up this forum first before going to the respective dev forums. Thanks.

I use the desktop clock every night too, on my night stand.
You know, the button next to the "night" button takes it right to the clock screen.
As for Nav, I rarely use it, living in a small town, so I haven't had that problem

I haven't noticed any of those problems in regard to the navigation app and I use both Google & the Sprint TelNav app often. My device's display stays lit when I'm using the apps. I haven't noticed the thing in regard to the clock either, but I'll experiment with it later and sew what I CA cone up with. Finally, your method of wiping is suffice. You really don't need a superwipe or format-all zip when yo have RA v2.3 and you wipe EVERYTHING in the wipe menu except the card. If you have the time, flash Warm 2.2 RLS-5 and see if you still experience the things you referenced above.

Not so much worried about the screen not dimming, more dealing with the entire app crashing. Might be worth mentioning I'm on a hw0004 evo as well. I've also used Calkulins latest radios combo pack to make sure I'm at the latest of all radios.

Something new about the nav issue, the screen doesn't shut off fully, I let it go today to see what would happen and the screen stayed dim until the voice needed to prompt me for a turn in which the screen returned to normal brightness. So it would appear that for some reason the screen will dim after a couple minutes if you're on a straight leg of a trip but will bring the screen back up to normal brightness when it needs to communicate to turn or whatnot. Not sure what to make of that but I was able to confirm it multiple times.
**UPDATE**
Well, apprently a few other people have been seeing this issue from the google maps 5.7 update, so it looks like it might not be ROM related.

HTC Incredible AMOLED Touch Screen Issue

I've been having a intermittent problem with my touch screen functionality on my HTC Incredible AMOLED. I used to run SkyRaider and or Virtuous ROMs and never had this problem, but I also haven't used them in months. I now use HeyItsLou ROMs exclusively. Right now I'm running Redemptive rEVOlution v2.2
What happens is after a few weeks of running the ROM my touch screen becomes over responsive. When I go to type it won't let me select certain letters and/or selects letters two or three characters over. Sometime it will be so sensitive I won't even have to touch the screen to type. I can just hover my finger over the keyboard without pressing and it will start selecting like crazy. When this starts happening basically I can't use the phone anymore. It will exit to the home screen and start randomly selecting things and basically go haywire. I'll do a battery pull and let it sit for a minute and that sometimes fixes it, but not always. Last time it did this I had to reflash the ROM twice before it fixed it. Even then it would still happen typing in landscape mode, but not always.
When I flash ROMs I wipe the dalvik cache and do a full system wipe. I've installed through clockworks and ROM manager. I've tried not using titanium backup and reinstalling all my apps fresh from the market. I've tried a number of kernels. From Lou's #4 & #7, to Ziggy's kernels, and Hydra kernels. I even went as far as to unroot for a few days and then reroot. Eventually, it does the same thing and I have to reflash and deal with a wigged out phone for a day or two... any suggestions or similar problems? Any help would be very much appreciated! Thanks!
Give this a try. It is the calibration tool that supposedly HTC uses to calibrate the screen and not just the keyboard. Just install it like any other app. Put it on your SD card and install with a file browser.
Cool, thanks. I'll try it out.

[Q] CM7 eventually just starts showing black screens instead of most things. Why?

This problem only really happens after my phone has been on for days at a time. I have had this problem on the latest stable and latest nightly for CM7 (each one cleanly installed after a total wipe).
What happens is that most screens are replaced with entirely black ones. The most consistent example of this is the settings screen. The first Settings screen (which shows Display, Sound, etc) loads correctly. If I click on any of those, I just get a black screen. This will happen in other applications too, like Baconreader or Browser. Also, another connected issue is that the lockscreen won't animate once this problem starts. I can drag it down to unlock, but the rotary wheel won't move at all. If I drag to the right to load my custom app, the lockscreen won't go away and it will force my to pull the battery.
Has anyone else run into this problem? I'd just like to know I'm not alone. I'm not really expecting a bugfix, especially when I'm not even posting a Logcat.

I suffered this same thing today. Thankfully a full restart fixed out, but I would love to learn a real solution.

Next time it happens I will, I'm just afraid it will break Facebook/SMS integration like I've had happen before.
It's just so weird since it breaks everything. The lockscreen, the options, Pandora's station list, the browser, and it goes on and on. It's like there's some sort of display mode that gets screwed up.

What version are you using. I'm going to try to install nightly 77 today after a fresh wipe.
I was seeing the same thing. Now I'm trying to figure out why my data speeds are so painfully slow on CM7 so I can't offer a fix. Flashing back to Warm to troubleshoot 3G.
I get these issues all the time no matter what kernel or nightly I'm running. It has forced me back to sense roms lol
Same problem here. I updated stable mod from stable mod. Reinstalled. Going on 4 days, no issues so far.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I have the same exact issue. This never happens on a sense rom. I did some tweaks to my system over the past week and I haven't had to reboot since this past Saturday or Sunday. I thought I had fixed it!
Then...
My phone started doing it this morning after I turned on 4G at work, literally as I was writing this post it started doing it. I then turned off 4G.. and it instantly went away. Turning back on 4G and it isnt doing it right now. Now my phone is doing something weird with go sms pro... when I get a text and I respond via the pop up message.. once my text moves to a second line I dont see what I am typing anymore... and now it has progressed to where the pop up box isnt refreshing after I send a message (this is all happening while I am typing this post). Now the phone has become laggy and somewhat unstable... rebooted! All is well. So I went roughly 4-5 days without a reboot... where as before I had to reboot at least once a day.
Thats about the best I can get with these settings:
CM7 7.0.3.1
Savaged Zen 2.6.38.5 CFS > Using SavagedZen Governor, min 384 max 998
Displaying some animations (read somewhere that is a "fix".. or helping extend the time it takes for the Black screen of death to appear).
This is after several full wipes, several when I was running Amon RA recovery 1.8 then updated to the latest and did it two more times. After upgrading Amon and wiping I did not use any backups and started completely from scratch.
So I am not sure what else to do. Some people are getting this, some are not.

[Q] Nils' Business Gingersense 3.0 V2.3

I've been running Nils' V2.2 ROM for several days now, and here's my observations (I'd have made these in the dev thread, but I'm still < 10 posts):
Initially, lots of force closes, but this settled down after a day or so. Occasional hot reboots hung on for another day, but stopped when I installed Tiny's kernel, enabled smartass, and enabled fast-boot. Now, I get an occasional FC on "System App", particularly when I'm playing with configurations, but other than the popup, I see no other side effects. Applications on the SD card are easily lost, and pretty difficult to get back to the SD. When I reinstall and try to move it to the SD again, I get failures once or twice, then it moves. Other than this, I find it a little more laggy than is really ideal. I did eventually overclock the high end, but this only improved the lag a little.
Other mods I installed are the black lock ring, the Rosie 5X4 app drawer, and WildStang83s Bunker Buster DTR.
So, that said, it's a really sexy ROM, and I can't wait to see what comes with V2.3.
First question, will flashing V2.3 wipe out the DTR mod? I'm assuming it will.
Next, if the DTR is wiped, can I flash the same one, or will V2.3 have changed enough that a new DTR is needed?
Thanks a bunch!
Lou
I have run a variant of the GingerSense ROM's for a month, haven't had any of the issues you raised.
Are you restoring anything to the ROM? Particularly system data along with an app?
Assume the appropriate HBOOT, cwm, and minimum radio are in place as well as ample room on the sd card?
Also assume complete wipes of data, caches, system, factory reset, boot, etc?
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA Premium App
smtom gave you your answer. If you are getting FC's or any other strange behavior because something like the wrong hboot or residue from the prior ROM is still there.
Follow the instructions in my first post to clean the system out and reflash.
Thank you both for the suggestions.
When I flashed 2.3 over 2.2, I did clear the cache and Dalvik *before* taking the backup, just to be safe, and it does seem a fair bit snappier now. Still not quite the interface speed I was seeing with stock Sense 1.0, but pretty close, and it really is so much cooler ...
As far as restoring system data, the first time I tried V2.2 (the day it was released), I did make the mistake of restoring some of the system stuff - like Mail accounts - I might even have inadvertently restored the old Mail app itself, which was clearly a dumb thing to do. It was my first non-stock ROM, so I suppose it can be chalked up to Newbie mistakes. Anyway, that resulted in a lot of ugliness that was obviously not your ROM, and I knew it. I was a lot more careful not to do anything so dumb the next time around, but I did get some instability anyway. Maybe something got left behind, I don't know.
Now, I limit restores to user apps and only restore data for some of the more annoying apps to set up - 1Password, DropBox, SugarSync, Facebook, things like that - not GMail, Mail, or contacts. I manually re-enter all the mail accounts and sync contacts from Google.
Wouldn't it be nice if Google gave you the option to track your app installs (free apps too, not just the paid ones) and gave you a batch re-install button?
I probably pushed my luck a little by flashing the DTR before rebooting from the ROM flash, but so far no problems at all.
When I do see a small lag in the homescreens, it seems to hang on for a second or two, then the phone seems to get itself in gear and the home screens flip like nobody's business. I still haven't put Tiny's kernel back on though. I'll stick with the stock version for awhile at least.
I do have SetCPU installed, set to on-demand from 245MHz to 998MHz. I haven't set up any profiles though. I know they are a bad idea with Tiny's kernel, and probably no problem with the stock Gingersense kernel, but I wanted to see how it works with the default configuration for awhile.
I am also using the 2.15.00.07.28 radio. I tried the leaked 2.15.10.07.07 version, but didn't find any improvement, so I went back.
My HBoot is 0.92.
I still haven't put the Rosie 5X4 app drawer back in. I was wondering if there's a way to disable the "paging" scrolling behavior and enable the smooth scrolling that Sense 1.0 used?
Thank you both again.
Nils, this seems like mostly minor updates, but whatever happened, it's a lot more snappy and stable for me now.
Cheers!
Lou
Yee haw! Appbrain will track and batch reinstall applications, fwiw.

Can't set my contact card image
It seems every time I try to reflash, some other minor thing comes up. Up to now, I was always getting the image I had set for my profile on Google with my contact card, and in my Handcent conversations.
Now, not only is my image not there, but I can't set it. Seems I can't set *any* of the contact images. At least before, I could modify my Google contact in the Google web interface, but now I'm not sure that would work.
I've tried fixing permissions through CWM (5.0.2.0), and even tried manually changing permissions on /data/data/com.android.providers.contacts.files/* to 666 as detailed here for a similar issue.
Any ideas what could cause this, or how I could fix it?
Thanks (again) in advance
Lou

[Q] need HELP resetting app start-up permissions (corruption?).. am now desperate

I have found NO info on my problem. I flashed cm7 to my EVO a couple years ago and I tweaked settings in menus a rookie shouldnt have been in. I used auto-starts to stop user & system apps from starting up and for whatever reason when i flash a new ROM it reverts start-up permissions back to my customized settings & not the factory specs. It isnt even every single setting I adjusted. Its a specific few apps & after flashing a new ROM I can get the permissions to stay clean allowing start-ups on all but two that i am aware of. The apps that, im aware of, the start-up permissions system default is turning them off after a new rom flash are Amazon(3or4 permissions Xrossed out), Dialer(1x), Email(1or2x) FM radio(1x), calender storage(3x), market updater(1x), the orginal market(1x) the current Play store(1or2x), Google services framework(1x), & I think thats all of the ones that i can adjust to start-up in an auto-start manager app after a new ROM flash following a reboot and the permissions staying clean & not Xrossed out. Then there's my 2 NIGHTMARES, GOOGLE 1 TIME INITIAL(1x) & GOOGLE PLAY SERVICES(7X). The auto-start permissions for these 2 apps will NOT stay adjusted to on after any new ROM flash or reboot or hot boot following their permissions reset.. One of the (corrupted maybe?) auto-start permissions that wont reset for Google Play Services is connectivity, meaning changes in signal connection(e.g. wifi, 3g, airplane mode) &/or plugged-in charging and un-plugging the phone. In turn, when I plug-in my EVO to charge, things get extremely buggy. U/I jumps & absolutely arrogant acts of erratic behavior. Touch points on the screen don't match up. Choppy animations. Apps begin to respond like they have consumed all of the resources available and if I am lucky they just lag ,on average, 5 seconds behind & many just finally give up and force close. However, once I un-plug my EVO things assume a 90-95% stable activity with "almost" no sign of any previous problems. I have tried every combo of wiping, mounting/unmounting, settings on/off, booting, & flashing I could think of trying to fix this problem. i flashed sense based ROMs and AOSP ROMs as well as stock builds along with every kernel combo xda had available.. I was CONSUMED for 20 straight hours this past Friday alone in this mess. Over the last 6 days Ive invested over 100 hours in tweaking setting combos along with wipe, mount/unmount & flash combos. Please hElp, I just want my EVO to recognize its own "Roots" again. L2ms... The Nand backups I did 3 years ago at the pinnacle, of this misery my EVO lives in, are on a hard drive that is LONG gone.. I am capable enough to know where the answer to my situation rests.. It surely will NOT come from a noob, nor will it not come from a mildly talented android user or any mediocre devel, It wont even come from a trained android tech. [Q] Settings menu all fubard

As my title states, no idea what happened to my settings menu.
I'm "stock" rooted. (Did it back in December with odin flash - 4.3)
Firewalled, Greenified, and TitaniumBackup to Freeze useless apps.
Everything has been great, then all of a sudden I was getting 3 errrors.
Google Text to Speech, Maps and Settings all quit working. (The whole, unfortunately *blank* has stopped working)
I removed Text to Speech, but Settings still crashes and refuses to work and now Maps took it's place (T2S).
Removed Maps and still Settings does not work and will randomly crash in the background.
I have done nothing new from what I described I have already done above.
Nothing was newly frozen. I have never uninstall any stock apps, just freeze them.
Last thing I uninstalled was a GoSMS theme I no longer use. Uninstalled it through ROM Toolbox Pro as I saw it was running in the background.
Everything else appears to be working fine. Camera, Chrome, Texting, Calling and my various daily apps.
Just something with the settings "app" has gone all wrong.
It also appears it's not the entire settings. Like if I go to about phone, it's all good. If I go to display part of the settings, *crash*
Two other odd issues pertaining to this as well:
My assistive light widget no longer works. So I know this happened within a 24 hour period as I use that light nearly every day.
And when you get into the settings part of the phone, all the text / font is screwed up. (Pic attached to see what I'm talking about)
Assistive light widget shows the same messed up text as well.
Data corruption. It will spread. The easiest and most successful solution is to wipe data, system, cache, and Dalvik cache, then re-flash the stock firmware, then re-root.
If you don't want it that successful you can do the wipes and restore a backup, but there is always a chance that there was corruption saved in the last backup and in a few days it will be as it is now.
What caused the corruption? It could be anything from a bad USB cable to a nearby flash of lightening, but more likely it's whatever you do that you need root for.
Frank
I would believe that was the issue if it was more wide spread.
Or I was having stability issues in daily usage.
The phone only gets charged via usb, I have not hooked it up to a computer for some time.
No storms or surges recently either.
As far as root usings, nothing has changed or updated recently. And none of what I do hard changes anything.
Reflash. Much faster and easier than wracking your brain trying to track down what exactly little thing went wrong.
