Telstra HC 3.1 root (MZ601 AU) - Xoom Android Development

Hey all.
I've managed to unsecure the new Telstra 3.1 boot.img, and have successfuly rooted.
For ease of rooting etc follow the instructions here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1049901 but use the boot files I've attached instead.
I haven't tested extensively, but I started with a stock locked Telstra Xoom, updated OTA and then followed the above steps using my unlocked boot.img
I haven't tried the modules so USE AT YOUR OWN RISK
I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY IF YOU BRICK YOUR XOOM
thanks to dsixda for the kitchen.

testing myself now this is exactly what i need, only reason i root is to add adhoc for wifi

all works great ta i will link to whirlpool

worked perfectly thanks.

I am stuck at "waiting for device"..any tips?

DOH!, fixed it.. don't ask..lol

is this 3.1 an official release meant for the MZ601 or is it a verizon 3.1 that's been frankensteined?

@ mynameisjon,
It is an unsecured boot.img that has been made from the official Telstra (MZ601) OTA update.
If you have a Telstra XOOM update using Settings > About > System Updates. Then apply this to get root.

Hey eprpicdavey,
Do you have an unsecured version of the new boot.img? They re-released the 3.1 update last weekend after resolving the FC, battery issues. I performed that stock upgrade, then used your boot.img here, but am now having the original issues. I assume this is because I need an unsecured version of the new update.
Do you have one/know where to get one, or can you point me in the direction of some instructions on how to do this myself? I do not wish to run a custom rom or kernel at all, just have root access for things like Titanium Backup Pro.
Regards,
Ulnagar

Id like to make it myself

Here's how you should be able to do it.
Make sure you have a file called /system/recovery-from-boot.p.
Flash the old insecure boot.img (any working insecure boot.img) to the _recovery_ partition.
Boot to recovery and dd off the (stock) boot partition once booted.
Restart (boot normally) to restore the old recovery partition.
Unsecure the stock boot partition in the usual fashion (split the image and change ro.secure to 0, then repack).

Thanks for doing this, I was going to make an unsecured boot image for this android 3.1 version, but never got around to it.

I (personally) won't be able to do it for a while, however.

Unsecured Boot.img
Originally I used dsixda's HTC Kitchen to unsecure the boot.img
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=633246
It's really easy to use once you have a (virtual) machine set up, and almost idiot proof. I have never had any issues with the kitchen as long as you follow the instructions.
I'm planning on doing this again for the new update, but am away until september, so can't do anything until then. It's also a lot easier than manually coding.

its work great with me ..
My xoom is originally form US wifi only but I install the international rom because of the arabic language
now I have xoom rooted with international rom (MZ604 international 3.1)
note: I follow this instructions http://www.xoomforums.com/forum/motorola-xoom-hacking-guides/7353-how-root-international-nonus-motorola-xoom-3g-gsm.html with replacing the boot file from here
thankss for every thing

[ROM][2011-08-04]Vision Gingerbread 2.15.231.3 Rooted

PLEASE READ EVERYTHING BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO INSTALL
This is a rooted, de-odexed, busybox, nano, ad-blocking hosts file, uncensored DNS resolv.conf but otherwise completely stock version of the 2.15.531.3 OTA for the T-Mobile G-2. This is not an update. It is a complete ROM.
I built this for my own use but anyone can take it and customize it as they see fit. I am a "Privacy and Security by Default" minded person so I have built it with a few alterations along those lines.
The ad blocking hosts file is to block known adware/malware from first boot. Updates to the hosts file as new threats are learned can be done by installing AdFree from Market or manually updating the hosts file yourself. I am not affiliated with the creators of AdFree in anyway. You can install it or not if you want or manually update your hosts file manually or not if you want.
The uncensored DNS resolv.conf I have included is because many ISP's and networks censor the Internet by controlling what you get directed to through DNS that is not what the official DNS record would require. They also hijack bad requests and typos through DNS redirects to their own search and ad pages. Google logs all DNS queries and what IP address it came from if you use the "open" Google DNS servers. I have included alternate secure and uncensored DNS settings as that is what I use myself.
I have now included a link to download a version of this ROM without those two customizations. I have not tested it myself but it should work fine for you if you choose to install it.
I used dsixda's kitchen to do the modifications and without that, I would probably not have done this at all. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=633246
You will need to be rooted with S-OFF, Clockworkmod Recovery and engineering hboot to install this.
See this wiki guide for all information on rooting and downgrading the G2: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision
See this thread for general information on the G2 also: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=916431
THIS ROM IS SET TO WIPE THE SYSTEM BEFORE INSTALLING. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A BACKUP OF ANYTHING IMPORTANT BEFORE INSTALLING THIS! The reason for this is that I can see potentially major problems if it is installed like an update. THIS IS FOR CLEAN INSTALLS ONLY.
You will need to install the radio that came with this OTA manually before installing this ROM. The radio version to install is 12.52.60.25U_26.08.04.30_M3.
Download the radio here: http://www.mediafire.com/file/51rr1vff4wamedg/TMOUS_G2_12.52.60.25U_26.08.04.30_M3_radio.img
Rename the file to radio.img and install it from fastboot. You need the Android SDK tools and platform tools installed on your computer and the engineering hboot installed on your G2 to do this. Shutdown the phone completely. Then hold the trackpad button while powering the phone back on. Connect the phone with the USB cable. Open a command prompt and change to the directory where the radio.img file is. Issue the following command:
fastboot flash radio radio.img
Wait for the radio to update completely and successfully and then disconnect the USB cable. Select "REBOOT BOOTLOADER" and verify from the fastboot screen afterwards that the radio is installed. Then select "BOOTLOADER" and from the bootloader select "RECOVERY" to proceed to install the ROM.
INSTALL THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK. I am not responsible for what you do with this and there is no implied warranties and guarantees.
I recommend a full wipe/factory reset from within recovery before installing this just to be safe. ***This does not revert you to S-ON or un-root the G2.***
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE BACKUPS OF ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING BEFORE INSTALLING THIS.
I do not plan to do any customizations of this but I will try to answer any questions that may come up.
***Update: I may post a version without the uncensored DNS setting and ad blocking hosts file as it is a simple tweak and there seems to be a calling for it. Stay tuned...***
***Update: There is now a link to download a version without the ad blocking hosts file and the uncensored DNS resolv.conf.***
Download: http://www.mediafire.com/file/b4w4a...d_S_TMOUS_2.15.531.3_signed_080311_215742.zip

Hey, can you tell us how you temp-rooted? That is actually all I'm interested in; I've been running Visionary on 2.2 to temp-root on boot, and that serves my purposes. I'd just like to be able to keep doing the same thing, although I realize Visionary won't work, but would you be able to put together a Visionary-like app that does give us temp-root on the new 2.3.4?
Thanks again!

In the DZ/G2 wiki are instructions for downgrading the 2.3.x factory installs using fre3vo to gain temp-root. As far as I know, there isn't any way to gain permanent root on an installed 2.3.x system.

I have a couple of questions. You say that we need to have a rooted phone already, but at the bottom you say that you recommend a full swipe/factory reset before installing this ROM. Wouldn't a factory reset get rid of the root and s-off?
Also, how do you install a radio and where would we get it from?
Thanks!

Flashing a radio: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=896597
I would get the radio that is designed for this ROM from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1202429
A factory reset will get rid of the entire ROM image on your phone. It will not change the s-off factor.

spookievision,
To make this a "turn-key" pure vanilla stock GB rom, can you include the radio that seems to be missing, take away AdFree, and that other thing with config file you mentioned (forgive my noobness) and make a "white-wall" clean stock rom that can be flashed using CWM?
I want to experience this "stock" for myself, but i'm from CM7 and don't have any experience with flashing radios, and this config, AdFree files.. I would like to simply download, do a nan-backup (of my old CM7 rom), then flash without having to worry about any of the other stuff.
Thanks,

Any alternate kernel can potentially break things as they aren't what the system is compiled to work with originally. HTC hasn't released the kernel source for this version yet to my knowledge so alternates that would be the most compatible won't be available until they do.
I just flashed this rom through clockwork without wiping anythingfirst. It does install as a clean rom just like a new phone. Is rooted, Very nice. Ididnt install the radio suggested as the one i hadinstalled was a newer one than listed.

I suspect that is what the fotaBoot "file" is for. I think it forces reboot to bootloader to flash the firmware.zip. just a theory and keep in mind, my rooted rom broke everything but the bootloader.

It was my own attempt to make a rooted rom. I applied the system patches through CWM, modded the boot and recovery to use the new kernel, but did not flash the hboot nor radio. Stuck on boot screen with a broken recovery! It's still a work in progress.

[Q] Going from JSS15R to KTU84P on rooted flo with TWRP 2.6.0.0

I tried flashing the KTU84P zip using TWRP, but that didn't work. From what I've read, I apparently need to flash stock recovery, do the OTA update, then flash TWRP again? Won't that get rid of my root?
Ideally, I don't want to lose my data or have to excessively fiddle around with tools to get root again, if possible. I've kept my tablet at 4.3 for months because I didn't want to do a ton of research for this, but WiFi issues forced me to try upgrading.

Thank you! I was under the impression that I could just flash the zip since 4.x updates seemed much more incremental than 1.6 to 2.2 and then 2.2 to CyanogenMod on my old CDMA HTC Hero. I guess that isn't the case though.
Mostly I didn't want to re-arrange my icons but thinking about it I can probably get Titanium Backup to back up everything in my tablet so that flashing a Google factory image won't be a pain...

[Q] Any reason not to update firmware on new2me G3?

Hi all. This is my first LG phone and I looked around but didn't see any reason not to fully upgrade firmware before I root. Any input any drawbacks of upgrading fully? Also, this is a t-mobile used phone and the back of the battery case has a wireless charging stickon in it. Is this standard for this phone? I havent researched the look/brand of it yet as I have just got it. Thanks. Its a nice phone. Can't wait to get tweaking!

The latest build 10R broke all the rooting tools.
Assuming you are still on build "c" or "m"...
Root first w/ PurpleDrake and make sure it installed (TWRP) custom recovery. It should also install SuperSU but I can't remeber, you may have to read a bit.
I would then update to the latest TWRP version which can be done easily with TWRP manager. Make sure you install busy box when prompted by TWRP manager!
Perform a nandroid backup before updating!!!
Then flash the "R" firmware with TWRP flashable zips available here.
Be certain to flash SuperSU before rebooting! If you forget there is no way to get root again after a reboot.
Good luck...

Update and keep root?

Nexus Noob here. As I'm still learning, I have some questions regarding the update process. I would prefer not to have to wipe data and re setup my phone, and I found several tutorials that mention flashing everything except data.img. That all I understand.
What I'm not sure on - when I got this phone and rooted it, I needed to flash a modified boot.img file. When updating to 6.0.1 or whatever newer versions come out, do I need to do that still? I found another tutorial that mentions flashing all the img files and then reflashing supersu, but no mention of the modified boot.img (http://www.teamandroid.com/2015/12/08/root-nexus-5x-android-601-mmb29k-marshmallow-factory-image/2/) That's why I'm confused.
Any help you can give is appreciated. Thanks
That guide refers to a older version of SuperSU. The latest beta version is 2.61 (SuperSU-v2.61-20151207213702.zip) which you can find here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=64161125&postcount=3
This is a new method that automatically patches the boot image for you so you do not need to flash a modified boot img yourself. Versions 2.60 and later do this. That is why the guide you linked does not say you need to flash a modified boot.img.
Just make sure that you haven't modified your system partition (by rooting or otherwise) before you flash this.
I did root and put some ring tones in /system/media. Will flashing system.img overwrite that all and then I can update or do I have to go back to stock completely?

No, an official image cannot be flashed like that. If you fastboot flash an image you will lose recovery and root. Update officially with a factory image and root afterwards or flash a custom rom plus vendor.img.

Even with systemless root?
When it comes to upgrading, there are a couple of routes you can take. Both involve downloading the official factory image ZIP first. Extract the contents, reboot into bootloader, and then you have option:
1. Edit the flash-all script (.bat for windows and .sh for Linux/Mac) by removing the -w option. Removing this option will prevent the upgrade from wiping user data. Once the option is removed, simply run the script to upgrade.
2. Flash the images individually. Sometimes certain things don't change like bootloader.img or radio.img. You should always flash boot.img, system.img, and vendor.img when updating. This is the route I take.
After flashing the images, you will need to reboot into Recovery mode and flash SuperSU. Then wipe cache and dalvik and reboot into system. If you use a custom kernel, you will need to reflash that as well after updating.

Ah makes sense. So I just need to reroot. Where do you get the "official" factory image? Have a link handy so I can bookmark it? Thanks!
Also anyway to remove the "warning" about unlocked bootloader that comes up on boot? I heard you need a custom kernel but I don't know the point of installing what (aka the benefits). Sorry for noob questions, but all the info is so scattered and hard to figure out.

Google posts the official factory images on the developer site. Here is the link: https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images
AFAIK the boot warning can't be removed, but I may be wrong. It's nothing to worry about though.
Having a custom kernel is not necessary, but there are benefits to using one. Custom kernels typically provide better battery life with same or improved performance. They can also make your device run cooler and use less memory. Custom kernels also allow for various tweaks such as change vibration intensty, screen DPI, headphone/speaker gain, etc. I personally use ElementalX with the Interactive Governor tweaks from the thread in the general forum, but I've read that Franco Kernel is very good as well and will probably try that out in the future.
