OK so I think this question has been asked, but I've never seen an answer in any of the related threads.
I am currently waiting on an XTC Clip to arrive. I have also seen that Verizon will be posting the GB update in the near future.
So here is my question: will the XTC Clip work with the GB update? If the GB update gets pushed out before I get the XTC Clip, should I ignore it and wait for ACD168 to publish his Deodexed version? Or is it safe to update and then root/unlock when the XTC Clip arrives?
Again, I apologize if this has indeed been answered. If so, can you point me to that answer as you chastise me for being the newb that I am?!
Edit: Nevermind, as soon as I posted this I went back to the Gingerbread thread where the answer had been posted

XTC clip is the ONLY way to root if you upgrade to GB using the RUU or the OTA.. plain and simple.

There is currently no way to turn S-OFF/Root from gingerbread on the inc2. It hasn't been exploited yet.
If you want root or S-off it's probably best to wait for your clip or alpharevx.
If you don't care so much about root and can wait until an exploit has been found, by all means do the update.
Edit: Ah, I stand corrected. But Root still doesn't exist for GB on our device.
Here is the main factor. What ever RUU GB you upgrade to is fine as long as IT DOESN'T CHANGE YOUR HBOOT and this has been tested on what was released at that time and still is 2.18.605.3 which is right under the official OTA 2.18.605.4 (which I can assure you doesn't change the HBOOT as well). you can ROOT using XTC clip ONLY.
just open up the folder of the .zip you are installing and make sure it doesn't change the hboot. it says it in the file, so that's an easy way to check up with the phone.
AlpharevX will no longer work if you upgrade to GB in anyway.
Hope this clears a few things up.
thank you for the clear and decisive information, hopefully it will clear up the continuous questions .. as i know i've asked my fair share already

Just noticed this when I was browsing through an old Desire ROM, I know we can't downgrade HBOOT but if we do manage to be able to find a way to do it, maybe this HBOOT will have R/W access, I really do not know, just throwing it in to the wild.

We can now http://android.modaco.com/content/htc-desire-desire-modaco-com/310970/how-to-downgrade-hboot/
Didn't realise someone found it already, thanks for the update.
I understand the downgrade method, but does this SPL have to be put into an RUU for it to be flashable? Or is there another method I can use to flash it?
Just tweeted Paul about this, i hope this is a good development
Guys its not S-OFF or less protected, its simply from a usedebug RUU released a long time ago. As described in my rom I already have it and tested all the different things to see if its less protected, which it was not.
Yeah Paul just confirmed it on twitter, dead end im afraid;(
Hello!
I recently spent some time to achieve S-OFF and root for my incredible 2 thanks to attn1 on the alpharevx irc channel. I'm at the point now where I'm wondering what steps to take next? I've heard that Verizon is coming out with GB for the incredible 2 some time in the beginning of August. If I wait for that and update officially via Verizon, will I lose my S-OFF and root abilities? Or will I later be able to install roms and things like CM7/Sense 3.0?
I apologize if this has been answered before, but I don't want to upgrade my phone officially if I'm going to lose my S-OFF and root in doing so.
Thanks.

Chances are that if you take an official update it could overwrite the AlphaRevX bootloader and you will lose S-OFF. Best rule of thumb has always been once an official update hits, give the devs a couple of hours and there will be a fully rooted version that you can safely flash and not worry about losing S-OFF.
Sounds like a plan. Will it ask me to install the update once it arrives or will it install automatically? D:
Thanks for your help!
Where can I find the software for the S-off? I went to alpharevx site and the Windows version is currently "under review"
I had the original Incredible and the screen got messed up so I picked up the DInc2. It's been awhile since I had to do this, but having S-Off will allow me to flash ROM's, correct?

Yes, S-OFF will allow you to flash a custom recovery such as ClockworkMod and that is how you will flash custom ROMs.
There are some threads that discuss how to use a Ubuntu LiveCD to run the Linux version of AlphaRevX while you wait for the Windows version to come back online.
I received an Inc 2 as a replacement phone and it came preloaded with the gingerbread ota.
I have researched various forums and have found some conflicting information. Mainly, this thread serves as a clarification for myself and those that also have gingerbread preinstalled.
1. Is it possible to downgrade to froyo in order to root when the phone comes preinstalled with gingerbread?
2. Is there currently a way, software wise, to root the 2.3.3 gingerbread update?
3. If the answer to the previous questions is no, is it ever going to be possible to install a custom rom and/or gain root access ?
Basically I am trying to decide if I should attempt to exchange it for an Inc2 with the old froyo software installed.
Thanks in advance.
I got lucky, I already replaced fascinate with dinc2 and got it today, however I had froyo on it.
1. no
2. no
3. Wait for an exploit or buy XTC clip.
No, you cannot downgrade to Froyo without rooting the phone.
No, there is no way to root the phone via software, YET.
Yes, it is likely that there will eventually be a software root for GB phones. It might be a while, because they just came out with froyo root a few weeks ago.
You could always get in on one of those XTC clip trading/group buy deals. I would just keep your phone for the time being, because honestly, there aren't any good ROM's yet. (this goes along with the fact that the phone just recently got rooted)
You're not really missing out on anything. My phone is rooted, and I am running the OTA debloated, not much different....
AT&T did that with My ARIA when I ordered it it was supposed to have 2.1 (Eclair) on it that was rootable, but by the time I got it they had released 2.2 (Froyo) and they shipped it that way.
I didn't have to wait very long before S-OFF was achieved though.
I imagine some Dev will stumble onto a way to S-OFF the latest OTA.
But If its the latest version I as far as I know you will need an XTC-Clip to get S-OFF.
I had miui on my fassy and miss it greatly
Oh well, it was worth a shot. Guess I can deal with stock for a while, if it becomes too unbearable I'll cough up the money for a clip.
haha you'll have the official MIUI with dinc2. check miui-us's post

Drooling over that currently haha
At least sense is better than touchwiz
I saw a few guys on here claim to be able to downgrade, but I don't know the truth to that statement. If I was in your position I would look into it, though.

From what I can gather, you can only downgrade if your phone was rooted and s-off applied before the gingerbread update. In the case of phones with the preinstalled gingerbread ota it is not possible. Again, I am basically guessing but I believe this to be the case.
If it's true that you can downgrade and root, please correct me immediately lol
I think you're right, if you're S-OFF you can restore back to froyo with an RUU, but the whole point of having S-OFF is to be able to flash unofficial firmware, so if you're already on gingerbread and S-ON you're out of luck for now.
Has anyone confirmed that the XTC clip works for S-OFF on gingerbread?

You're right there sent any 'food's roms there are 'great' roms. CM and MIUI are completely stable and considering the fact that software root was just released I would say that's a great sign of things to come. Plus we have some great sense 3.0 roms that are being worked on as we speak. Bottom line is if you want to harness the best of your phone's hardware you'll need s-off.
Software s-off is not yet possible but an xtc clip definitely works. It is a hardware unlock so it doesn't matter which rom you have installed as it does its process in hboot before the rom even loads. The reason software s-off for gb isn't possible yet is because the exploit alpharevx used is patched in gb. I'm sure they'll find a way sooner or later but patience is the key.
This post is not meant to demean anyone just putting nlmy thoughts out there. Oh and by the way this thread probably belongs in the general section

Hi,
Verizon is pushing out OTA updates to install Android 2.3. I'd like to downgrade to Android 2.2, and prevent the OTA from happening in the future. Is there a way to do this?
Cheers
Only if u are s off already.

Sorry, but currently there isn't a way. (with the exception of the xtc clip).
Hopefully alpharevx/unrevoked will get temp root on GB and allow s-off.
No. But you can do some searches and find out.
Please read/search before posting. Thank you.

I, too, was unfortunate enough to receive the Gingerbread OTA update with no confirmation or anything. The funny thing is that I clicked cancel after it downloaded it, which did nothing. What's even more funny is that this is replacing a previous Droid Incredible 2 which already had S-OFF and CM7.
For anyone trying to downgrade to Froyo using this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1033922 -- it doesn't work, so forget about wasting your time.
i dont know if you've read this thread already http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1298990 but apparently it works, too bad im sorta new to this so i dunno how to do it myself xD if any1 is down to make a video or slide tutorial of how to follow these steps i am sure it would save the world for us inc2 unrooted users who want to root
it works, but its via adb only. Afterwards, using Revolutionary you can get s-off. The instructions are for downgrading to get s-off. Basically reverting back to .97 bootloader.

It does work, I used this method to downgrade today, i was able to gain s-off and flash cyanogenmod after. It isn't the easiest method for novices though. But the instructions are pretty clear. I had problems running the automated script included (i was in debian linux, so i cant speak for the windows script). However when I executed the commands in the script manually, everything worked . I would imagine that someone will package this method up nicely before too long...
Thanks
attn1 (for putting this all together in an understandable way)

Moving to Q&A
Just got a DINC2 replacement after 2 years with original dinc. My hope was to root and S-off ASAP. After a little searching I am not sure how to proceed. I have 0.98 bootloader with Android 2.3.4 and 5.10.605.9 software version.
I see that revolutionary does not have option for my bootloader. I also see a thread with a downgrade tool. I also saw a sticky saying not to download the bootloader.
Where do I go now with this?
Thanks.
If you have a way to get a xtc clip to get s off you will be ok. There are people that have been able to get s off with your software version but then have bootloop issues with sense roms. For some reason aosp roms are ok. There are many threads on this make sure you read up before deciding what to do. But I did read with the clip to get s off no issues with sense roms.

Thanks for the reply! This is very disappointing. I really do not want to shell out $50 on a clip. It seems all I can do otherwise is wait for an OTA or a fix.
If he's on the 5.x version he can downgrade, and then use revolutionary.

With the 5.x software, use the downgrade tool in development, and s-off with revolutionary.
Edit: sorry, just noticed tyler's post says almost exactly the same thing.

Sorry looks like yours is not the newer software so you should be able to downgrade with revolutionary. Sorry if I miss guided you. There is a lot of people with the newer version having problems.
ok so what ive read here is if the phone is
SOFTWARE version 5.10.605.9
then downgrade + revolutionary. Hboot is .98, for what it's worth.
Also, another question, if the phone is past the 1 year warrenty, is it worth while to just use the HTCDev unlocking, or does this not 'fully' unlock the device to community needs?
