Rom Selection / New Epic - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all!
My epic should be arriving early next week. Very excited to be retiring my samsung transform.
I've been a member sdx's haxsung community for a while and I am not new to the rooting/rom/customization process at all. I've even been toying with my own kernel.
However, the epic will be a new breed to me. So, I turn to you, the awesome xda community for guidance!
What rom/kernel/mod setup works best for you? Why? Awesome battery? Performance?
From reading this forum the past week in length I'm thinking of going with syndicate rom with the genoicide 1.4 ghz oc kernel.
Any dragons lay ahead?
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance to the community, and to the devs. Look forward to working with you all very very soon (once this friggin phone gets to nj from texas)

Kernel..
Posted by Mr. Z's Epic 4G via Tapatalk

I swear by the Genocide kernel and anything put out by Rodderik. He's had many "firsts" around here including overclocked Froyo kernel, dynamic overclocking and most recently put out the 1st (and only to my knowledge) dual boot capable kernel. Some of the other kernels floating around were forked from his earlier code too if memory serves...
As far as ROMs go there are several good ones, but I use my own creation so I really can't comment on any in particular.
Welcome to the community!

+1 on this setup!

I've had good luck with Syndicate Rom Frozen 1.1.1 and later.
I've also had good luck with Bonsai 4.0 (set it up on a friends phone).

Along with this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1128993
and havent had any issues what so ever. I'm on the EF02 ROM with the EF10 Modem. I'm currently 15 hrs 32 min on the battery and still at 67%

Welcome. I used to be at haxsong as well. Took you awhile if you where still on the Moment?
I've never used anything other than Bonsai ROMs. I'd skip 4.1 and go straight for V5 Beta 13. Very stable, fast and cutting edge with Netflix working, CRT animation, ect....
U'd be all set for when official Ginger comes down the road soon...

Depends on what kind of phone you have, if its a speed demon that can do 1.45ghz, or an undervolting beast that can take a -150mv across the table and get 36 hours. There are such a wide range of limits on these phones good luck finding out what yours can do.
Happy rooting but do play around with stock for like 20 minutes so you can have an idea of what these great devs have done with their badass rom/kernels.

I'm running this same setup as well and have been pleased with it. This is my first ROM and haven't found a reason to change. Phone is quicker than ever before with no forceclose issues and battery gets me through a full day (14 to 17 hours) on one charge with medium use (pushing 4 email accounts including work exchange account, facebook widget, some web browsing, text messaging, a few phone calls, a little angry birds or something).
I may at some point try other ROMs but for now I have no reason too.

[Q] Favorite Custom Kernel?

It depends on what Rom you are using, if it's a custom Rom you'll probably get the best performance on the Kernel made for it (i.e. Syndicate Frozen + Twilight Zone)
Ohh, i think I understand now. Thanks for the help.

This can be true - but users of other ROMs have reported Twilight Zone to be a favorite. We also recommend it to Midnight users.

+1 Indeed 2 days in a row i got 14 hours heavy heavy use, and i mean heavy
Plus thats good for me because i have way too many apps for my own good.. lol
92% screen lol
Genocide 0.2a fast and steady. Nice features in combo with setcpu if that is your cup of tea. Complements nebula rom well.
Seven Sisters EPIC - XDA App
14 hours on a stock battery with heavy use? Is that even possible?
I'm on Syndicate Frozen 1.0.1 but I must be on the wrong rom!

I'm on ACS Rom + kernel. With 5 hours of usage from 100% to 30%, I receive and send about 200 emails, about 100 text messages a day, constant push messages on Beluga app (as much as 300 incoming), maybe 5 calls or less (about a minute average). I'd say that's heavy usage. No game, no surfing the web.
EB13 Supernova rom with the latest Genocide kernel is the best I've found. Very stable with cool animations and Voodoo sound. Don't forget to flash the mod that enables sound thru the aux out of the OEM docks (SGS audio dock fix). I'm finally enjoying my Epic to the max.

Syndicate Frozen 1.2 is best IMO (for now).
Less ppl seem to experience problems on it since its a ROM that's been worked on for a while, not to mention its branded with the legendary "ACS quality." AA's 2.3 Gingerbread EXT4 is also really good, but I will wait for an official release of 2.3 before I cross over. Either one is fully functioning, fast, and great with battery (YMMV)

Syndicate Frozen 1.2 is great! Great speed improvements and the battery life lasts me two days.
AA's i2 is sickly fast and battery seem to be great so far but for best battery life I'd good with Baked Snack v2.4 hands down! I could go for a lil over 2 days w/o charging when running 2.3 which was out months ago and 2.4 just came so I could only guess its better than before! I didnt run v2.4 for too long since AA droped i1 n i2 but for the days that I had v2.4 battery life was sick!

Try not to make thread titles to vague next time. Although you got a lot of good replies this time you may not be as lucky on the next. Plus its easier for people to find answers when they're searching if the topic is clearly defined. Welcome to the board. Don't let the trolls intimidate/annoy you.
I personally use SFR 1.2 w/ Genocide 1.0.

best rom???

What do you guys believe is the best rom on this phone and why?
Could you also rate from 1 to 10:
Stability:
Speed:
Battery Life:
Pros/ Cons:
Thanks.
sfr1.2 hands down
in all realality every ones phones are different. flash every rom, kernel, theme and then mix n match. what works for me may not work for you
fyi:
rom: Syndicate Frozen 1.2
kernel: TwilightZone1.1.1
theme: Emotoinless Beast Ressurection
I flashed srf 1.2 a few days back. It was my first time rooting. Wanted a rom that would improve my phone without causing a bunch of hassle. I can say, so far that this is EXACTLY that rom. Flawless performance and amazing look and speed. Followed qbkings video to the T then flashed the emotionless beast resurrection theme. Its been running so damn good. My only issues are with the features I don't know much about yet - galaxy tuner, voodoo, voltage control, etc. Need to do my homework on that stuff but couldn't be happier otherwise.

Can we combine all these "best ROM" threads from this month , and Ill agree SRF 1.2 or AA i3 atm, but they are all pretty smooth, even ones not found on xda, I've flashed all, and try to pull the best parts out to use on my ROM... When GB becomes official I'm going to try real hard to get some help with some things to make it more epic; As time goes on my skills are getting better, I'm even looking into writting code, just at a really slow pace...

Like Mystery said, try different ones out, mix em up. Updates regularly pop out for different roms, some roms only exist on different forums, etc. And now there's Gingerbread betas to choose from along with the fantastic Frozen Yogurt roms, so give them all a try! Mileage may vary per person... Only way to be sure!
The Bonsai Rom is the best.
Bonsai 5.0.0.b11.
It is the best because it is fast and stable and it is only in the Beta stages. Everything works plus it is an Ext-4 Gingerbread Rom. The developer is very nice and responsive too.

Just remember that EVERY phone is different so asking "what is the best ROM" is relative only to that user's experience. Some phones seem to not like custom ROMs at all and sometimes it is the user and then they complain about their problems. The easy answer is read up on the positives and negatives of a few and try one. The best thing is that there is tons of good people here willing to help if you run into trouble or a few Force Closes.

Good suggestions but just to clarify, you can't use TheImpaler's keyboard patch on Gingerbread ROMs like Random Hawk. The keyboard fix will come when the official comes out and we get source. Most of the Froyo EC05 ROMs have it baked in though

AHH forgot about that. thanks a lot for that clarification. At least from that provided link, OP can install the speed demon one because from what i remember, EC05 ROMs come with the default keyboard patch in them. At least it'll help him out in that sense? As far as the rotation lag fix goes, i know that Random Hawk has it already, but for some people it doesn't work, same with ERA's rom.
I really like the RandomKing HAWK so far.
I am pretty new to ROMS and really like this one.. not close to the highest quadrant scores, but feels the fastest and most stable to me.
I have ran EB13 VIPER 5.0, EC05 ACS Frozen 1.2 and now the RandomKing HAWK v.2.
Right now I have RandomKing with his included Chris14g kernel, EG22 modem, Supercharged v6 script, option 9, CPU is overclocked to 1.2Ghz, journaling is turned off.
Only had it a couple days, so we will see.

I have to agree with you there. If Quadrant benchmarks are your thing, Urban Decay flies.I get 3200+ marks at 1.2 with Tegrak. On Froyo..what Zander said. ERA ReVolt Revolution yields the highest Smartbench scores on a consistent basis. Its the only ROM other than Urban Regen that gives me 1600+ CPU marks and it does almost every time. It is fast!

I tried tons of roms.. always come back to this one.
ROM Ho
Once I started flashing I just couldn't stop...I did learn that after 20 flashes, the Amazon App Market stops letting you log in because each time you flash it captures it as a new device in your profile. To fix that just log into Amazon and delete the old/invalid entries.
Here are the ROMS I have had the privilege to try:
SyndicateROM Frozen 1.1
Urban Regeneration
Swiss Cheese Samsprint
EF02 Leak (stockish)
EG22 Leak (stockish)
Urban Inception
midNIGHT ROM
ACS Go Green
ERA Olympus (artist formermly know as Unamed)
ERA EpicuReAn SCrAMbLED EGgs22
RandomROM Hawk v2
Many people have already stated this, but it is really about personal preference as far as what will work best for you. There have been some ROMS that just did not play nice with my phone, but I am sure this is a phone by phone thing as well. My favorites by far are CK's Urban series and the RandomROM Hawk. I have ran with Hawk the longest (previously Osprey) and I have loved it. Although, I still miss my sexy Urban ROM at times. What it boiled down to for me was saving battery and RandomROM excels at this. Being unable to post on the development board, I do want to thank all of the devs who invest their personal time (especially those that don't even own an Epic anymore or work for the competition) to make our phones kick a$$. Thank You All!

[Q] Best kernel and rom combination for battery life?

So I decided to go back to an Epic instead of an Evo. I had the Epic when it first came out up until around January. Last things I remember from the Epic development scene was Herver and his Baked Snack Roms and Kernels. (what ever happened to him anyways?) I am obviously in no way familiar with the current crop of roms and kernels and would appreciate suggestions on where to start and I'll test combos to see what works best for me. Froyo and Gingerbread based Roms please.

no 2.4 was the latest. he stopped dev cuz he now had an evo 3d..
I too am looking for the best battery life and I'm having trouble getting it. Currently trying out latest random rom for EC05 and its decent but nothing amazing, I've also loaded the super V6 memory script and the battery just doesn't hold up very well. Where can I get the old baked snack roms?
Sorry to let you guys down, but I can't seem to find the files for baked snack. I'll keep looking though.
i had excellent battery life on the bonsai rom and kernel
Rebirth + Genocide, 38 hrs. moderate use........
Syndicate frozen 1.2 and genocide 2.0 give me the best battery and stability so far, but random rom is a very close second, and then probably viper synergy 5.0. The gb leaks were good with battery too, but I had too many fc issues with them. I would love to try this baked snack I keep reading about though. I've seen a lot of random posts here and there mentioning it, and always boasting about the battery life on it. A pm with any info on its whereabouts would be greatly appreciated. Then again, syndicate 1.3 seems to be just around the corner too, so I'm really interested to see what's in store with that as well.

I am hooked on random rom hawk, battery life is amazing. It usually only drops about 1-2% an hour for me sitting idle. I have heard urban warfare is very good on battery life as well. Gingerbread leak roms are still pretty unstable at this point though. Only try them if you have a good backup procedure down, and are prepared to get hit with force closes and random reboots at any given time. If you need the stability, stick with EC05 roms.

I've tried several roms froyo and gb and the best battery and performance I seen was with randomroms 2.3. Rom but the random reboots kept pissing me off so I wentt to pheonix and its been pretty good I hadbetter battery life with hawk but this is better for now.
I also would like to try backed snack so if anyone has the url t the rom or anything can you please let me know
I found one rom a long time ago butit was 2.1 so I didn't like it I kno there is a froyo one but I can't find it anywhere if anyone has it it would be greatly appreciated if you shared it.
