[Q] Weird Charging Problem - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, so like the title states, I ran into a really weird issue today while charging my phone. I went out and bought a phone charger, a regular one that just plugs into the wall outlet. I plug the charger in then started charging my phone. I went to send a text while the phone was charging and a lot of weird things started to happen as soon as I unlocked the phone. First I wasn't able to swype my home screens, then while I was typing the keyboard kept longpressing letters by accident. Went on Tapatalk and could not scroll or even a selection on the screen.
So I took the phone off the charger and it started working fine again. I now have it hooked up to my usb via an adaptor hooked up to a wall outlet and the phone is acting normal.
Has anyone had this happen to them? I bought the charger from a well known "super store" (hint: rhymes with Paul Blart)
Forgot to mention my "specs"
Rom: latest MIUI
Kernel: SZ 2.2.1 CFS w/SBC
Hw: 003

I had a similar problem with an energizer 3 in 1 charger (USB, Car, and Wall). Touching on the screen was really erratic until I unplugged it. Just ended up trading that charger for my girlfriend's and everything is just fine now.

Touch screen extremely unresponsive when charging

So when the unresponsive screen when grounded issue came about, I didn't really notice the problem much myself. However, recently, and I'm not sure when this started, the screen has become horribly unresponsive when charging any time! Doesn't matter if it's on desk, in my hand, stock charger, 3rd party charger, etc., if it's charging at all, the touch screen only accepts half or less of my inputs, making typing impossible. Is this due to the last software update? Anyone else experience this issue? I would exchange the phone, but not if it's not going to help anything.
this happens to me when i use my cheap ebay charger
The fps lifting kernels fix this.
+1 for symtoms seen when using a wonky charger/cable.
+1 due to cheap charger - anyone know why this happens? is the OEM usb cable different spec from the cheap ones?
Hate to beat a dead horse, but the same happens when I plug my phone into the charger I got from eBay. Kind of disappointing, considering that I would otherwise be able to charge two batteries at the same time.
I notice this issue with the stock charger.
I believe the issue was when its not grounded..
Being plugged in is just about the most grounded your phone can get.
That's not the problem.
Starting to do it to me also now.
Just to be clear, this happens to me with the STOCK charger.

I'm having the same issue. i just chocked it up to the new kernel.
one thing i did notice is it seems to be intermittent. Yesterday night, it worked fine. this morning(conveniently when my alarm went off) i could NOT get the dismiss thingy to slide down.
Anyone else experiencing this? I do think it got worse after last software update. Would be nice if the next one improved things.
I emailed support, they did not say anything about it being a known issue, and suggested a factory reset. If that doesn't help, they recommended using my warranty. Would like to hear from more people before going through with the reset.
It happens to me when charging via outlet. Charging via USB connected to computer does not produce the issue.
I think it has to do with grounding.
Same thing happens to me! I noticed it with my aftermarket wall charger.
Bringing this back up, happens to me with a Stock charger.
Is it really the kernel? :\
@Person who said charging is the most grounded, the stock charger is not grounded ( in AU anyway ) and therefore it is the LEAST grounded.
ive noticed this happening over the past month or so. i've got to admit i've only really noticed this when its plugged into a usb cord i got off ebay. relieving to think it might only be an issue with it being a cheap cable and not the phone but i'll verify tonight with the stock cable.
I've been plagued by this problem for weeks and just discovered that it only happens when charging. I use the stock charging cable and wall adapter. I'm very, very happy to know what the problem is. I'm going to start testing this at various locations.
EDIT: I've tried this on both the wall adapter at work and on my work computer's usb. Same problem, though it seems worse when plugged into the wall outlet.
The touchscreen is fine on my sprint brand car charger and on the usb charger on my laptop. However, it starts missing taps when I plug my usb cable into my usb car charger. I'm going to best buy tonight to buy a different charger and see if that helps.

I have these issues as well with the stock charger and cable regardless of which kernel I use.

[Q] Touchscreen freaking out while on USB charger

I'm using the stock USB charger on my Epic, but lately I've noticed that the screen is acting crazy, my apps tray jumps around, the wrong apps launch when I touch the screen, etc. I played an air hockey game and it was all over the place, but the second I unplugged the charger, everything was back to normal. Any suggestions?
Bad charger, it has a bad ground somewhere screwing with your screen. Get a new charger. If that doesn't work its a problem in the phone with a ground.
Yup, crappy charger. I have a few chargers. The one cheap Chinese one that I have acts the same way
Both the factory one that came w/ my Epic and the one that came w/ my GF's Captivate both do it. Once in the dock though, no issues. Cheapy eBay car charger, no issues. I recently switched from SetCPU to No Frill CPU, so I switched back to SetCPU...problem solved w/ both cables. Odd.
I've got one of those cheap eBay retractable cables and 4 car chargers (all were around $1.00 shipped), never once had an issue w/ any of them.

It's weird, I occasionally see the same issue with mine on certain wall adaptors that work fine with my iTouch, and yet I also saw the same issue on an old Creative player too. Never caused any damage and worked just fine immediately upon unplugging.
It's completely gone away since I switched CPU clockers. I'm hoping it's just that simple since I don't want to have to deal w/ Sprint and trrying to get it replaced.
+1
My phone was doing this today... Loaded up the multitouch test app and just placing my finger on the screen would cause 1 to 5 touch points to appear randomly!
Took it off the charger and back to normal.
Thanks!

Epic Touch won't charge? Bad wall charger

Plugged in my Epic Touch to charge today and it wouldn't charge. Used a few different cords, and different outlets. Then tried my HP touchpad charger and it worked. Looks like I got a bad wall charger. Although, it was working last night. Anybody else?
Now that I've tested it some more, it's just REALLY finniky about being plugged in. It has to be plugged in at the perfect depth, somewhat at an angle even. Anyone else notice this? Bad charger?
Got my phone through Wirefly... surely I won't have to return the whole phone just to have this replaced?
I wouldn't even bother assuming i had another charger. The block Samsung charger looks just like the Hong Kong ones from ebay that you can buy for 3.99 each.
Well this one is supposed to be "super duper fast charger" so what kind of numbers (ohms/amps/jiggabats) am I supposed to look for when buying a new one. I know last night I had it on my old Epic charger and it took over 4 hours to charge to 100% from 82%.
Also, I know it's been mentioned before, but this thing is UNUSABLE when it's plugged in to charge. at least with the stock charger.
My samsung charger makes the phones touch sensitivity go thru the roof. Opens applications and menu's and carries out commands and such. It also creates lag switching between screens. Not an issue when I have my HTC Evo charger hooked up to it though. I'm just exchanging the whole phone and charger combo to be safe.

Really? I haven't even opened my stock charger and cable because I have so many others but I'm using a wall charger only with a Sprint label on it (got it doing some phone trading along the way) and the phone flies just like it does not on the charger.
The one that comes on the box gives the phone the major blues while charging
sent from my damn EPIC TOUCH 4G!!!!
This is horrible news ... my epic charger is half broken..
Using a HTC charger and it works flawless I wont even try to use the Sammy ones especially for DLing roms or for odin
Alas my sammy charger does not work either. I walked in to BB and they handed me a usb charging block branded HTC, since they didnt have any epics left.
Yes but what about speed of charge? The stock charger is supposed to be a quick charger.

Like I said in an earlier post, I haven't even opened the stock charger...so you can't use the phone with it charging with the stock..its that bad?

[Q] GNex charge cable failure

Hey guys, I have a question regarding your Samsun GNex charging cable. I woke up this morning after plugging my phone in last night to find that it was at 20% battery and the cable was not being recognized. After I jiggle the charger, the phone occasionally and fleetingly recognizes the cable but quickly loses the contact. When I tried to charge the phone with a different cable (my Kindle Fire charger), it worked without any issue.
Has anyone experienced similar failures of their cable in this manner? It worked the night before without any issue but now it is giving me problems. The cable is not visibly damaged, and I am careful with my devices/accessories so I do not believe that the problem is from my carelessness.
Finally, I got this phone from the Verizon store, would I take the cable to them or to Samsung to get it replaced? I hesitate to go to VZW because I don't want them to see that my phone is rooted (in case they ask to plug it in in front of them).
Thanks!
Yes I have the same problem I don't know if its just that they (Samsung) shipped out the wrong charger cables or what but I Use my Brothers cord for his Droid 3 and it works flawlessly snug and all..

Yeah, it worked fine until today, so I don't know if it was because they sent the wrong cord. Oh well, I will get in touch with Samsung about it.
*******Update******************************
My original cable has not suddenly started working again. it now charges and transfers files which is good because my Chinese knockoff cable had a loose fit on my phone.

Same problem here. I bought my phone around Dec 21st and just 2 weeks ago the original cable refuses to charge the phone. It also didn't allow me to transfer files to my phone. I currently have 2 new cables. One cable is from www.monoprice.com and one is from www.cellphoneshop.net (China). Both of the "backup" cables work fine as well as one of them being 8 feet long. (makes it that much easier to plug in at the library sometimes.)
FYI - my original Droid Eris cable crapped out after about 4 months so it does not surprise me. What I would like is a good backup wallwart to use at my office. The phone charges so much faster with the ac adapter.
Solid USB cables are cheap (also recommend monoprice.com) so its not a huge deal, but wish they'd last longer.
Mine's still going strong at this point.
I'm still using my Blackberry cable.
I love monoprice, why spend 150 on HDMI when you can get it for 5. I got in touch with Samsung and after some discussion they had me send my old one in (they paid for shipping) and they will send a new one. I was a bit annoyed that I had to send the old one since it was a hassle, but oh well.

Charging slow???

Out of the blue I noticed my S3 was charging very slowly, it even was losing a charge while it was plugged in while I was using it. I figure it had something to do with my custom ROM so I reflash, still same outcome. The battery was still holding a good charge, so I figured it was something else. I then went out and bought a new charger, which came with a micro usb cord to see if that helped. Plugged in the new charger while using my old micro usb cord, still same outcome. Then used the new micro usb cord and old charger, charging went back to normal, problem solved! I would of never thought that the cord would malfunction from day to day use after such a short lifespan. Moral of the story, check your cords if you experience the same problem, it could save you some time and money!
Cables do go bad. Also, check for gunk in either end of the cable or even the phone's socket. I've seen all kinds of odd problems caused by lint and gunk in cables or plugs.
Same problem here waiting for my new cables to come to see if that's it

Hopefully it's the cord and not the charge port.

That is why I have a couple cords always laying around. I've found that simple things as unplugging it to fast and it gets pulled wrong. Go figure.

True story; My wife has an S3. Over the Memorial Day weekend my wife had charged her phone with a EVO charger overnight. Next morning as we were leaving for the beach her phone was DEAD. I TOLD HER TO PUT IT ON THE CAR CHARGER, NOTHING. I asked if the phone was plugged in anyway long story short phone would not charge until I took the battery out and used the factory charger two hours all was well. Careful what you use to charge your handset.
I was having this problem, but the battery is over a year old and I live in a hot part of the world. Swapped the battery for a new one and everythings back to new. Fast chargimg and 9 hours of use. So glad I didn't go ti an HTC with a sealed battery compartment.

I would replace the battery and charger.
I've got the same problem. But my phone sits in a hot work truck most of the day. I suspect the battery is worn out now. I've tried new cables.
You could always try a new oem battery, they're pretty cheap on eBay. Make sure you get an oem though and stay away from the cheap knock offs.
