Hey guys, i currently have the fascinate rooted with the newest miui. was thinking about getting the inc2 bc my sd card mount is messed up and dont have insurance. looking through the roms i see alot say you have to have s-off. what does that mean? lol. Thanks in advance
It meas that all security checking done by the phone is turned off - what I mean by this is that normally an update/ROM would be digitally signed using a code/algorithm that HTC has - the phone would check the update/ROM file against the signature. If it doesn't match, then no update.
S-off turns off this checking, but in the process it unlocks the NAND flash and/or e-mmc card write protection so it is possible to write the the live filesystem from your running ROM.
It should be noted that a software method for S-OFF is not yet released, but it is pending. No one really knows when, though.
Pay no attention to the troll. Root will be here and be stable.
It basically means you can't permanently root it.

Who's trolling? I'm not the one going around saying it's never going to happen...just noting it's not here yet. "yet" YET...as in it's coming.
What hboot version are you guys on? Alpharev recently cracked 1.02. Also htv has promised to roll out unlocked bootloader in the future as well as updating some current generation phones.

is this post development related at all? as in is this a rom/mod/kernel/think tank post? no
read through the other threads and posts before making another super awesome thread like this
jmaddox31,
1.) Your post doesn't belong here in the development section. It doesn't really belong anywhere on the site as it has no value.
2.) We're waiting for you to root the device and post procedures on how to do it. You aren't done yet? It only took 2 days for the Thunderbolt. You are pretty lazy for not having it rooted yet.
3.) We are not your trained monkeys and you are not paying anyone (I just checked my Paypal). So go back and quietly sit in the corner.
PS: Mr Clown, could you close & trash this thread, please?
this phone will most likely never be rooted... by software anyhow.. might have to return it for a tbolt.
Why wont it be rooted??

1) we had the thunderbolt for months before the release, we were familiar with it when it was released.
2) We perm rooted it on release day, s-off on day 2.
Thunderbolt was a similar situation, however because we were able to locate firmware vulnerable to scotty2's wpthis exploit, we we able to downgrade, then replace the bootloader.
We don't have this option on inc2, yet.
I have a inc2 eng hboot, and once a way to write it is found, we will have s-off root.

I would be surprised if a signed ruu dating before ~jan 7 exists.
if raskal comes up with inc2 support i can S-OFF and jcase said he'd help from there getting and RUU and making a recovery.

Was intending to attempt some binary hackery but it looks like the binaries are obfuscated. It seems like at this point trying to hide hacks from the manufacturers would be pointless, so I don't really understand why obfuscation would be desired.
I'll jack with it later.

The software can't be that much different. I don't really know how their hack works so I can't say if they are trying to crack it still or just need some testing.

No, not yet. Once you get the Ginerbread update you are out of luck and must wait for a new rootable exploit to be discovered. Both the AlphaRev team and the Unrevoked team as well as others are actively working on trying to find new exploits.
The other choice is to find someone that has a XTC Clip diagnostic device that can be used to gain S-OFF on your device which will then allow you to install a custom recovery and custom rooted ROMs.
There is a number of threads on this. There is no way, as of now, to downgrade. The only way to get root, if you have 2.3.3, is to buy an XTC clip.
Edit..... I type too slow

If you visit the Revolutionary site, there are a number of links to some of the developers that are working on GB root exploits. With a little investigation into Twitter land, you will see that they are working on several HTC devices. One of the exploits will work on the Desire S, so it is only a matter of time before they figure out how to make it work on the Incredible S/Dinc2, too.

That is only for those with S-OFF via AlpharevX to downgrade back to Froyo and the stock boot loader. You need to be S-OFF and, correct me if i'm wrong, will still be S-OFF after the downgrade. It will not work if you're S-ON with GB, unfortunately.

Bad source information, from what's been discussed in other threads.
Have a look in the HTC Desire HD section and read the hubbub there.

I doubt we'll be affected since the Incredible S and the Chinese version of our phone already got ICS.
But this is Verizon, so I guess there is a ever so slight possibility of our phone not getting the update.

All the more reason for us to get worried. There are multiple posts scattered here and there that hint/speculate that an exploit has been found and the devs are waiting on 4.3.
If you don't want to wait then send your phone off for S-Off, but please don't rush the devs. The exploit will come when it comes.

Exactly why bounties are a horrible idea IMHO. Donating for people's efforts is one thing, but bounties are almost always counterproductive unless someone already has an exploit that they don't want to burn.

Why? Not "burning" exploits is a damn good idea. What happens when, lets say, the exploit was released now and then HTC took an extra week to patch it? Like getting insurance or warranty replacements? Too bad we wasted the exploit. Look what happened with the DNA and 2.04. It is literally the best idea to wait until the OTA comes out. This way, the majority of users get s-off and HTC will have a harder time patching it.

i remember picking the dna up in april and it immediatly took the update for 2.04 then it took the 2.06 one. only a couple months went by and they came out with moonshine on linux then a window's version came out. i returned my phone back to stock to get 4g back and then i used the window's way. it is great to wait for the ota like you said so many more android's can get unlocked or s-off!!! :good:
