Custom ROM installation - a newbie experience - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I'm a newbie to rooting and custom rom installation(Apologies for a long post).
Hope my exprience of first custom rom installation will bring confidence to other users who struggle / afraid installing custom rom.
1. Installed unrevoked3 v3.32 (latest version along with its drivers), based on the instructions from the site. This removed stock recovery & installed clockworkmod 2.5.0.7
--Successful (partially). su worked fine but nand security still on (s-on)
2. Downloaded alpharev1.8 on to a usb stick and updated recovery with alpharev-clockworkmod recovery. This process removed nand security and i got s-off
--Successful
3. Downloaded Android Flasher & Amon_Ra recovery and installed (This enabled me to create partition on SD of size >512MB)
--Successful
4. Downloaded InsertCoin_GB_Sense2.1_A2SD+_1.0.8 along with Radio 32.56.00.32U_5.17.05.08 and alignment ext files.
Now starts the fun part, I made a not of all app i had so i was prepare to lose all data !!!!

1. Partition SD (Swap: 0 ext2: 1gb fat32: remaining)
2. convert ext2 to ext3
3. convert ext3 to ext4
5. Flashed alignment ext
4. Flashed ROM (Insertcoin)
6. Flashed Radio
Did a reboot....
Phone hang on Logo screen
--Failure
6. Restore my previous rom via NAND restore
7. Phone back to my old setup
Attempt3:
0. Did a NAND backup (!!! Important !!!)
1. Partition SD (Swap: 0 ext2: 1gb fat32: remaining)
2. convert ext2 to ext3
3. Flashed ROM (Insertcoin)
Did a reboot....
Hurrah!!!! phone successfully installed with insertcoin rom
Had couple of issues (like facebook force close etc) but i'm confident now to explore other ROMs and find the one that suits me
It took me 2 days to understand and attempt things, but the final step took me only 30 odd mins to finally install a ROM
Its that easy....
Keep exploring and a BIG thanks to XDA & its developers for developing these custom ROM
Regs,
Ara

I have never used Android Flasher, and i would suggest everyone do the same. I flashed most ROM's and i've never had any issues, just do everything from recovery. ;-)
Also if you're partitioning the SD card, i would suggest to use gParted instead of recovery. (if you dont have linux use gParted live cd, bootable from CD, usb etc.)

dont use alignment.zip, they can mess up your ext...
restore your nandroid, go into settings>storage>format SD (this will restore whole SD as FAT32)
burn gParted Live CD, and using it format your SD after enabling USB-MS in recovery. FAT32 + 1GB EXT4 (FAT is before EXT, not after)
then flash ROM, 1st boot takes up to 15min
then you should be OK
DONT FLASH ALIGNMENT ZIP

[Q] SDcard partition not in place anymore

I tried to flash a custom 2.2 ROM yesterday onto my unlocked, unbranded and rooted Desire yesterday but it failed and the SDcard no seem not to be receiving files download either images or applications. Then I flashed the original 2.1 ROM back to restore the Device but the SDcard still displays 3.66GB as total space and available space even when I download apps. What can I do to restore the SDcard to the way it used to respond to downloads?it seems to be installing onto Phone's memory instead
Hi there,
I installed a custom rom yesterday.
Prior to installing I prepared my SDcard in the following manner.
I started up an Ubuntu LiveCD session then used gparted to format my SDcard.
1. Format the whole card as FAT32.
2. Shrink the FAT32 partition by 512MB to leave 512MB at "END" of SDcard.
3. Make new EXT3 partition in the spare 512MB at end of card.
I then put all the necessary files for the custom rom on to the SDcard and installed the rom.
Everything seems to be working great as applications are being installed to SDcard.

Starburst installation internal memory only 54MB?

Ihave installed starburst on my HTC Desire with the following information:
1. 16GB Class 2
2. Primary FAT32 12.5GB, Primary EXT4 1.95GB
3. Gparted
4. clockwork-2.5.0.7
5. S-ON
6. I’ve done exactly like it’s described on the starburst minisite, did not receive any errors, I started doing the partition using the Gparted live by rebooting with the MicroSD connected by USB as described first deleted the partition and got unallocated space, then first made the FAT32 partition which is primary and 12.5GB then with the left space I made the EXT4 partition which is also primary and it’s 1.95GB then applied. After this I put the StarBurst_Classic_1.4.0.1 zip file into the FAT32 partition and started the phone on recovery and installed the ROM from SD, BUT I didn’t do wipe before installing, after installation was done successfully I rebooted and the phone booted and stayed on the HTC screen and I thought it hanged but it looks like I didn’t wait enough so I took out the battery and booted again to recovery then made wipe and reinstalled the StarBurst_Classic_1.4.0.1 zip from the SD. And was installed successfully then rebooted and everything was good, I skipped all the Google account and stuff then waited for few mins then I rebooted just like it was described to install the Data2SD, it was written that a green LED will flash for around a minute and indicates creation of the new Data2SD ext4 partition and initialization procedure. Then, a blue LED will flash signifying successfully starting the Data2SD program, But I didn’t see the blue LED, I checked my SD settings after that and the internal memory was 54.52MB!! And I don’t know what to do now so please help.
7. NO
8. I did not use any ROM before.

Hi there, I also have the same issue, cannot get the Data2SD to Work, can anyone help?:
1.16GB class 10
2.13,15GB Fat32 Primary and 2GB ext4 Primary
3. Gparted
4. Clockworkmod 2.5.0.7
5. S-ON
6. 1) Created a usb boot Gparted disk; 2) Partitioned the microsd card using a card reader, deleting all current partitions and adding 1st the Fat32 Primary and 2nd the ext4 Primary; 3) Formatted de Fat32 Partition in Windows; 4) Copied installation files (Rom and data2sd installer and reinstaller) to the microsd card; 5) Introduced card into Phone; 6) Booted into recovery, did full wipe and turned off signature verification; 7) Installed the rom zip (classic version) by choosing the file from sdcard; 8) Booted and only introduced basic first use configuration (Language, date and time); 9) Booted into recovery and installed Data2Sdinstaller.zip; 10) Booted again, did all the configuration and the available sdcard space was 54mb and not 2GB
7. Yes
8. I did
9. 1) Starburst_Classic_1.4.1.1.zip; 2) Data2SDInstaller_X14E_GB.zip;
10.Not using
11.Did not
12.Did not
13. Did you get any of the following messages in recovery?
- sd-ext could not be formatted, file already exists? No
- Failure mounting ‘sd-ext’ Yes, then flashed the Data2SDReInstaller and it mounted but space was still 54mb
14. End of installation, everything is fine except that Data2SD is not working so i just have the rom without the main feature.
15. Sorry could not get around this step. I connected the device to a windows 7 pc, rebooted from recovery and executed adb logcat log.txt command line, after that it just showed me a lot of lines of text that are problably the boot log you need. When it ends i try to execute log.txt but the file is just not there (?)
Thank you

Do your restore settings even if you use an aosp rom when coming from sense rom or reverse? Partition your sd card directly in recovery or with gparted (both primary). Never use other tools, it seems they cause problems.
I use gParted for my SD Card EXT4- I Restore always Nothing. If i install a new Rom, i fill all manuel I have Time and Emails/SMS ... dont need it ^^
In which order do you create partitions? Are they both set to primary?

Supernova Data2SD issue

Hey all,
I want to post this in the rom section but I have less than 10 posts so I have to post it here.
I have an issue with the Supernova rom. I have followed the instructions in the following link and my issue is that the rom works but the data 2 SD does not and I have low memory.
"cannotpost link": supernova.droidzone.in/?cat=6
I will give you an overview of what I did:
I wiped all data before starting and I did a fresh install.
My SD card is a class 4, 32GB with 2 partitions, a FAT32 partition (Partition 1) and a 2GB EXT2 partition (Partition 2). I own a mac and cannot do a EXT4 partition.
I loaded the supernova rom to my SD card in partition 1 along with the apps2sd file (file name: data2sdv11.zip)
I installed the rom and let it load as suggested in the link.
I booted the system and entered my pin code. I did not enter the google details as suggested.
I restarted in bootloader and installed the data2sd zip file and restarted again.
The memory has not changed and it is low. I should also mention that it took a short time to load the data2sdv11.zip file, like 1 - 2 secs.
Question:
the Instructions say this for point 4:
Menu>Applications>Untick Fastboot option (VERY IMPORTANT)
This is unclear because I cannot find anything in the applications menu that mentions fastboot. What is the developer asking me to do in this case?
Thanks in advance,
Al

Hi, have you used Menu - Settings - Applications. This is where you uncheck fastboot
regards
That option must be there. Menu>Application>Fastboot option. It has to be unchecked.
After that depending if you are s-off or s-on you use Restart>Safe restart and wait to phone restart and load Data2sd if you are s-off.
If you are s-on you you choose Restart to recovery and manually flash Data2sd zip.
Ext2 could be a problem because it is recommeded ext4.
You should also have 4Ext recovery that is also recommended by droidzone and this recovery automaticly tries to convert any ext partition to ext4.
Sent from my Redux 2 Desire
When I go to Settings - Applications I have the following options
Unknown sources
Manage applications
Running services
Development
Storage use
I have H Boot on.
I am going to borrow a pc and see if I can convert my EXT2 file to EXT4, but it wont be for another week.

[help needed] unable to restore nandroid backup after repartitioning ext sd

hi
i have a wildfire s )s-on_ hboot unlocked running hensmod7 rom, when i installed the rom it had something like 78something MB as secondary partition and link2sd accepts only when i select fat16/32 from the start menu.
i recently repartitioned the sd to ext4 (and to ext2 later) and linux swap, when i try to restore the nandroid backup, process completes but when the phone restarts it stays on the main boot animation of the rom.
when i data reset from cwm recovery menu + del cache + del delvik, Then it restarts as a new blank phone running hensmod7 fine.
so the basic problem is getting the nandroid to restore on the phone.
Any suggestions?
btw my cwm version is same as when the backups are being made.

I think you just need to reflash the recovery. After that follow the other instructions on hensemod thread to install properly. While partitioning use minitool. Make 3 partitions: fat32, 512-2gb ext2/4, 418-512 mb linux swap in that order, make all of them primary partitions.
If this doesn't solve the problem I think Ur mmc is corrupted. Or U could also use data2sd it may also be that that U dont understand the process of using link2sd.

i am pretty sure that recovery is just as good as a fresh apple .... as i have restored before ( with success off course) but the moment i repartitioned the mmc and changed it to ext4 and later to ext2 (for testing) then system stucks on boot animation, even after successful restore.
Why can't people see a q&a section where questions are to be asked?
Which Rom are you using? Wipe data and other stuff first, then flash the zip of the rom, then use advanced restore to restore only data and sd-ext
