[Q] Rom guide / SD partition help - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all. I'm still running cyanogenmod 7 RC1 on my Desire and decided it's time for the real thing as it's becoming more and more unstable.
1. I guess I'll use ROM Manager to download and install - I assume this will completely wipe the device. Is there a way to upgrade from RC1 to final release?
2. I've never been able to download large apps. I think it's because my SD card isn't partitioned. I cannot find out where to do that, and WHEN to do this in the process. - Any advice would be really good.
Sorry for the numpty questions! Keep up the good work everyone!
Jonny

Hi,
i dont use rom manager for that (i used to download whit the PC and put in the SD and later wipe manually in the recovery and flash the new rom, but if you like to do in the rom manager i think that you also can do)
2ยบ whit the ROM manager you can do a ext 2/3 partition of 512mb whit no swap, but it will formatt all your SD so you need to save your data in the PC, in the other hand i prefer to use Gparted (you need a Cd and download the iso) its very usefull and you can make 1024mb ext4 whit no swap
I hope this will help you
sorry about my english ^^

I cannot find out where to do that ????

This is a bit of a joke. You resurrect a 7 month old thread to give bad advice IMHO (See My signature) which I notice you were thanked by evgen-baton for. I remembered seeing that user thank you in another post I quoted earlier.
I thought this was quite suspicious so I looked and sure enough, all of your thanks are from this person, today. His account has been following you around all day, thanking your posts.
Is evgen-baton your alter ego? If not, you have a stalker.

[How-To] properly install Android

It is not quite self-explaining how to install Android on our Windows Mobile devices. Therefore I took some time and wrote down all the steps for people who are new to "Android".
More testers -> more experience -> more knowledge -> faster/better development.
I hope this way the forum is kept clean(er) from all kinds of questioned that have already been answered many times.
ReadMe Includes:
- Partitioning
- Device preparations
- Boot loader
- Install steps
- Fixes
- Links
- more...
If you are a developer (you create your own package) feel free to use my ReadMe for your packages (update regularly though).
to download the ReadMe click the [Android Repository] button in my signature.
It goes to a rapidshare page with 3 files, and when I click on the filename Android_README.TXT
or start download, I get the error
The file could not be found. Please check the download link.
ok thanks. i fixed it (rs bug when renaming files ^^)
How would i partition a 1GB SD Card? ie what sizes etc are the last 3 same but the unallocated is just whats left over?
I want to use a spare card rather then the one that came with my HD.

normally just calculate how i wrote in the readme:
whole space -768 (3* 256) and then the other 3 x 256
but in ur case i would make the swap smaller (i think its not even used at all) and the fat32 bigger; for instance:
fat32 - 384 MB
ext2 - 256 MB
ext2 - 256 MB
swap - 128 MB (rest)
To be honest the bit I find most confusing is all the different versions!
i didnt create any partitions on my card, and android works as good as it does on any, mind you i have not updated the files fo0r a month so alot might have changed
ReadMe updated!

i agree...
i've been looking these posts here for a couple of days now and i still don't know how to do it....
especially the DualBoot thing...
is it possible to make a little bigger how-to manual?
or at least explain the versioning and the needed thing a little more?
the readme is about 50 times longer than anything else u will find about installing android anywhere else
the different versions are just like in windows mobile, theres not much to explain, its rather up to ur personal preference. doesnt take as long as flashing a wm rom, so its easy to try out more versions, especially with more sd cards.
dual boot is easy:
1. install the cab
2. open the dual boot program and make all your settings, for example: auto boot android (click on the checkbox/ratio under android logo), check auto boot checkbox and check fast boot (means 3 instead of 10 secs).
3. restart your device, DONT LAUNCH HARET because that will destroy all the dualboot settings. if you restart/shutdown the device normally, the settings will be stored and android will automatically booted at next startup (or whatever you set before)
if you have android autoboot and u want to boot wm, just QUICKLY press the wm LOGO when the dual boot screen appears.
i might include this in the readme soon, just dont have the time right now unfortunally

Thanks for the dualboot help... i'll try that...
the first problem I have encountered yesterday when trying to put Android was SD card formating...
i downloaded the program you said and followed the instructions oh how-to and was not able to do it under Windows 7 with my 16GB SD card... does it even work for Windows 7??? is there another program I can try to do it with???
I have also dualboot on my PC with the Kubuntu being the second OS, but I'm not using it as much as Windows 7... I can try with it if you think it will work.. but first I have to download the 15GB of data from my SD card to my PC, again
I would like to put the Espresso build cause I saw that it has everything working beside the GPRS and camera...
can you tell me what should I download for my Blackstone so it works properly???
thanks alot...

like the readme says: partitioning is only needed for partitined builds, which means that android uses several partitions to store different kinds of data, for - hopefully - more speed. only glossy uses partitions, espresso doesnt.
for glossy, u can also use ubuntu (download parted magic or something similar) to create partitions.
for espresso, u just need to copy the stuff onto ur sdcard.
but thats all in the readme... i dont have time to explain in detail coz i need to study a whole ****in lot at the moment +.+

well, some details about what version you are using would be helpful. however, this is not the right channel to ask this question. i think this question has already been asked several times in other threads. try search function or read the thread for ur version, its probably a version-issue or only for your country/provider

Instead of bumping your thread have you tried looking at the thread of the chef released rom for your phone as you might realise that others have same issue with the rom or not. I did a quick search of forums and i managed to find the answers within seconds.
We cant support your rom as we dont know what you are using / version and questions regarding that rom need to be posted in the correct forum thread

Sorry M8...But i am really confused with several ROM's and Methods listed here...
I will follow your instructions in future....Sorry Again....
Different roms work differently and you really need to try one, then ask about it in the chefs rom thread and if you dont like try another. Swapping roms and trying to use the same instructions on each may not work so you are only confusing yourself.

A2SD is indeed moving apps to the external memory. A lot of custom roms have it. It requires an EXT partition on your memorycard, an easy way to do that is to get rom manager from market
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Thread moved to Q&A.
judging by your post, you have already rooted your phone
here's an example how to do it with Official Froyo HTC Sense ROM v1.0c, which has built in old A2SD. I think it should work
- backup apps and system data with Titanium Backup Donate
- copy sd card content to pc in disk drive mode (by doing this, you will also copy your backups)
- download rom, radio and put them in root folder of your sd card
- you need to have some sort of recovery (whether it's update.zip in root, or permanent recovery - it's your choice)
- say a little prayer
- enter hboot -> recovery
- wipe all alvailable options (it depends on your current settings): data, cache, davlik cache, ext
- flash radio, it will ask for you to reboot from recovery, do it, it will restart few times, don't interrupt process of instalation.
- flash rom
-after you finish it, don't reboot, instead partition sd card using standard options: swap 0, ext2 512, fat32 rest, sd: ext2 to ext3 (this will format and partition your sd card, you will loose it's content
- reboot your phone, it will last longer than usual
- copy your sd card content from pc back to sd
- install titanium backup donate and restore system data and apps, it should force apps you previously had installed to sd
- reboot phone to finish restore
- install quick system info and check if your A2SD storage is partialy filled with data
-you should have your current apps and settings with A2SD enabled
Finally did it today with ROM manager huh......
Thanking all for support...

[Q] LeeDroid 3.0.8.2 Help

hi,
i have just tried to install LeeDroid 3.0.8.2 and am panicked that i've bricked my phone.
I partitioned the sdcard using Rom Manager - also downloaded and flashed the rom via rom manager.
It seemed to do its thing fine and the leedroid screen loaded up, but now it just keeps looping back on itself showing me that its installing making this funny beeping sound and then goes back to the leedroid screen for maybe 15 seconds and repeats.
Anyone know ever have this experience? can any one help?
thanks
Please make a search...
The best way to avoid bootloop is first to partition the SDcard with Gparted...
Then you need to check a few things (your hboot version among others)
good reading !!!
If it's looping at that point it is almost certainly a problem with the SD-card ext3 partition. Rom Manager is not terribly reliable with making that.
The Gparted suggestion is by far the best solution (assuming you have a PC with a card reader, rather than trying to do it with card mounted in phone)
If you *do* have a reader then try LiveCD with gparted, burn to CD and boot from that.
Make your first partition FAT32, and your ext3 partition at the end of the card. (1GB recommended). Make sure both partition are marked as "primary".
Sorry for jumping in here, but I also need help with this rom (sorry uber noob and all). Figured since the thread was so fresh may as well ask here.
Basically trying to install leedroid v3.0.8.2 (data ++) for my original htc desire.
Cant download from either of the links, they both lead to url 404s.
And i also tried downloading from both rom manager and also the minisite, these downloaded but seem to be corrupt. I cant open the zip file and trying to flash it returns a cant flash (bad) message.
Anybody know where i can get a working zip of this version?

I did the 1 click root fix viahttp://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/general/guide-root-lg-firmwares-kitkat-lollipop-t3056951
Generally it worked fine , the problem is that i did this with the explicit goal of only fixing the SD writing and storage issues
the phone only has roughly 2 gigs and 80% kitkat soaks up and not that im like app happy or anything but it makes app installation even weaker than an older cheaper phone thus killing a lot of the reason to have this fairly nice phone except for the camera which is fundamentally a non-prime reason to have this phone just a bonus.
So i installed the NextApp SDfix from the app store and applied its fix , and nothing especially changed , i also then installed link2SD
for further memory management. I can see a lot of info and i see how the system basically has the primary system memory with a legacy/emulated storage space as 2 seperate but basically same partition.
Then it recognizes as a entirely seperate ext memory the sd card , now since having tweaked with both these apps and everything generally running fine , i've moved this and that and dont have barely the basics installed i.e instagram/twitter/ ect ,... the system has about on the system drive some 300mb free obviously not a lot space in this age it is being very selective of what it will install and download from the app store , i was luckily able to reinstall CLEANMASTER after uninstalling it but i can't reinstall FACEBOOK
or download and install next to anything else that i've tried i keep getting the same error , the SD card is nearly entirely free with plenty of space soooooo
long story , made longer How can i adjust this , How can i maybe fool the o/s to think the SD card is the primary partition or something similar can i undo this? (not the root i know i can undo the root and or just start fresh from a hardreset or something
Any Input is appreciated , i am as the name so obviously suggests a new rooter not very experienced in android sw , though i was able to tweak around with iphone3s and jailbreak them which admittedly was rather fun.
Im only wanting this just so i stop getting that blasted insufficient storage error blasted google
this is technically a repost as i did post this in that said thread above but i wasnt sure if it was the right place for the inquiry
Hi! I saw your other post too. I can't answer your main question, but I can answer two of the others.
1. To have a thread or post of yours deleted, in a browser (not Tapatalk nor XDA app) choose the exclamation point on your post to report your own post to the moderator and then write them to ask that they delete it.
2. The other post in the one-click thread was slightly more appropriate since these are the LG G3 sections and at least that one is the one click method thread, but your main question has nothing to do with either so you should report this thread to have it deleted and create a thread in the Q&A section of the forum for your particular phone. The Link2SD thread might be another appropriate place, but only choose one place.
3. I know it wasn't intentional, but double posting is a definite no no. At minimum of noone responds to one post you should report your post to be deleted and then post the question somewhere else that's still appropriate. If your first post is a new thread, it's fine to reply (no quote) to your post by saying "Bump" in order for the forum to put the post back up to the top where people might notice it again. Bumping shouldn't be done before 48 hours.
Welcome to the forum anyway and I feel your pain, my first Android phone was more like a teaser Android with around 384 MB of ROM and no internal storage. Not politically correct and no offense meant to anyone but I refer to my first Android phone as the retarded little brother of the HTC Droid Incredible. It was the Droid Eris.
Good luck.

How to installing new Rom for Moto Z Play

Hi Guys,
I need to know the process "in sequence" to install a new Rom for my Moto Z Play, and the recommended files as well. Sorry but I'm amateur in this domain.
Thanks in advance,
Rashad
First of all this belongs to Q&A, not here. I already requested a thread move.
But other than that the process is quite straight forward and the ROM threads normay have enough detailed guides, otherwise you can find further explanation if you search this part of the forum.
Roughly, it's first of all get a working environment with fastboot and abd installed on your computer. Google provides them as standalone download. On Windows you should add them as PATH variable so you can just open command line and start working. For further guides just Google.
Then of course you need to request an unlock key for your bootloader, otherwise you can't flash much (it enforces a factory reset so you'll loose all data!). Then just get TWRP and install that. And then just flash away.
In every case, backup, backup backup! Before unlocking the bootloader you can't do much, other than copy internal storage and backup apps with helium. With bootloader unlocked you can do full backups in TWRP (it needs a storage that can store big files. Unfortunately some ROMs can't read SD cards formatted with exFAT, only FAT32 so you can't use them since FAT32 only takes files up to 4GB. And TWRP seems to be unable to split up files accordingly)

Be aware that you will no longer get ota updates.
Read the Q&A forum.
Read the guides forum.
Look at the ROMs forum and pick a ROM, and read it to see if you fully understand what to do.
