[Q] flashing roms.. ect without sd card - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

is it possible to flash a rom without the actual sd card? because my sd card slot has basically been broken off and ive semi bricked my htc vision. so if somebody can please tell me how or at least some how back to stock it would be very much appreciated. =)

it would be very complicated, becuase you would have to repartition your 4gb ram in 3 mounts.
it would best if you do it through adb commands.

Well im willing to do anything to get it working again and im pretty good with adb so would there be anyway i could get the commands

boot loop

My epic 4g touch is doing bootloop in the 4g screen. Need help. any ideals how to recover this. I tried flashing rom but clockwork sees no files in external sd card. Plus, how do you transfter files to your internal sdcard in clockwork?Any help is appreciated. Thanks
When I had to recover from a bootloop I actually had to remove my sdcard, put the phone in download mode and reflash it. Flashing with a .tar on your SD card has caused many problems for me =/
As a rule, here is my emergency ROM evacuation plan:
1) Can I get to recovery? If so, I will simply wipe everything (factoryh reset) then reflash fresh.
2) If not, then just boot to download mode (power+volDown) and Odin over a clean kernel (most bootloop issues are going to be from a kernel issue)
3) If all that doesn't work, then flash a stock rom from scratch using Odin
It sounds like 1 is not an option to you. I don't think you can copy from sd to internal without mounting them on a pc and doing the copy on that side.
In any event, you are gonna need a PC.
HTH
You can put files on your SD card by enabling SD mount somewhere within cwm. However I would listen to that guy^
That is probably the best way to "abort" a ROM

Where to keep Nandroid Backup

Ok I took the plunge and installed CWM and Ardatdat Kernel. Thank you to both Ardatdat and utkanos for your wonderful work. Now I made a Nandroid backup of my phone and I have lots installed so it is big. It comes to 1.897.535.488 ok close to 2GB. Now It of course places this in the SDcard as it does not see my 32GB MicroSD card. Everything great so far.
Here is the question....
If I transfer this to my MicroSD to save room on the SDcard internal. If something goes wrong and I screw up on installing another rom and the phone does not boot, how do I get it from the MicroSD Card to the internal SDcard???
I am kinda stumped on that one. Only thing I can think of is before trying any new Rom make sure I transfer back those 2GB of Backup files to the SDcard.
Please any help on this would be appreciated.
Hey mate,
I've done the similar thing. It's a but weird having the mount point for the external sd card /within/ the mount point for the internal storage...
I thought that I had read that the mount points used in the CWM were configurable... But I'm not certain. I will have a read over some of their docos and see what I find..

I kept mine on the computer, so whenever I need to restore, it's right there.
How? Is it not only a CWM file? Can you use the nandroid backup files via ODIN? Because as I am saying, say your phone no longer boots and you need to replace the ROM and your nandroid backup is on your computer how do you place it on your phone's SD card to flash with CWM. (Assuming Odin does not work) If Odin Works then you just flash via ODIN and on the computer is fine.
Can you map to your External card via CWM?
See, I also have an HTC Desire HD for other purposes, and when I tried to put a new rom, it would be stuck at bootloop. There is this option in CMW Recovery that lets you still view the files on the computer (Mount), and exchange files. Then from there you navigate to where you put the backup via backup and restore, and boot it.
CWM should always be there with the Vol down + Power buttons, and you should be able to recover it.
It's my first time experiencing with Odin since I got this device, so I really don't know much about it.

You need to partition the SD Card if the Rom is A2SD enabled, and you want to use it. Yes it should be done before you flash the Rom. You should also find out what type of partition. Does the the Rom call for an ext.3 , or ext4 partition. If you are going to partition your SD Card you need to make a backup on the PC first. Partitioning the SD Card will wipe the card clean.

Not all Roms will work. If the Rom is built so that a2sd is enabled automatically, it will not work correctly. Things will be missing. You can have FC issues. In some cases I've had them not even Boot. So it is better to have the SD Card partitioned before you Flash if the ROM calls for it.

Hey guys, noob here. I am going to be flashing my phone today too.
Death by soaps mod seems to be what I am looking for, but I just want to make sure I am doing everything right.
I have turned s-off with revolutionary and backed up everything with both clockworkmod and smelkusmod and saved everything on my computer.
I am not 100% sure how to continue with partitioning and flashing though. Do you have a recommended guide partitioning and flashing with your mod? I have found some general guides, but they are for other mods and I dont want to screw anything up.

Ok. Simple.
1. Move everything on your sd card to your comp.
2. Use smelkusmod as its the best.
3. Go to partition card or something to that extent.
4. Set your desired size, 1 or 2 gigs is good enough, depending on how many apps you have/use.
5. Set swap to 0
6. Wait for it to partition.
7. Upgrade ext from 2 to 3 to 4.
8. Put all your stuff back on the sd card.
Flashing
1. Use format all/superwipe option in wipe menu of smelkus to wipe.
2. Go to flash zip or something like that.
3. Select the file and confirm.
4. Wait for it to do its thing then reboot.
Done!

Nope no need to partition again. That's done. Also you dont need to wipe for mods unless the OP states it.
For Roms, however,(what you just flashed) always do a full wipe/ superwipe and if going between versions of sense and aosp, always wipe the sd ext.
For kernels always wipe cache and dalvik cache before flashing.

[Q] USB not working. How to restore stock w/o odin?

Hi,
The USB port seems to be broken on my Roger's Glide and from what I can tell it seems to be a hardware problem. I get the "USB not recognized" message when I plug it in to a PC and it seems to be only charging intermittently. I have tried everything including different cables, USB ports, PCs and reinstalling drivers. I even tried mounting the USB in CWM but it still doesn't connect.
I had updated to the latest (stock) ICS rom from AT&T but I need to revert back for warranty reasons. Since the USB is not working I can't flash using ODIN and mobile ODIN does not support our device. I have CWM 5 recovery installed but there doesn't seem to be any CWM flashable stock Rogers ROMs available anywhere. I don't have a nandroid of my stock ROM, is there anything I can do?
Can anyone point me to a guide on how to convert a stock tar.md5 into a flashable zip? I found this after searching a while:
http://www.igottadroid.com/ModMarket/Listings/dman32851484578.html
but it's not specific to the Glide and I don't know if I need to do anything else.
I had used dsixda's Android Kitchen in the past to build a flashable zip for my desire Z but It looks like the Glide is not supported. Does anyone have any pointer to getting it working for the Glide?
I'm not certain Odin TARs can be converted to CWM ZIPs... for one thing, CWM for sure doesn't have access to BCT or EBT right now. If the ICS leak replaced the Rogers bootloader splash with the generic "SAMSUNG" one as is on AT&T devices, you have no way of changing that back.
The biggest problem is we don't know what all the OneClicks do. They might change the PT, they might not, they might change the BCT, they might not, they might have a bootloader, they might not.
You could try just sending it to them as-is. Then it becomes a question of "not covered" vs. "voiding" -- you have a leg to stand on here, because 1) the firmware presently on the device IS Samsung official 2) the flashing could not have damaged the USB port. Tell them you have your data backed up (and be telling the truth here damnit) and just want a phone that charges correctly again.
Thanks for the info. The splash screen is still the Rogers one so I am ok there. The stock ICS ROM (I927UCLH2) I have on there was the flashed with ODIN. From there I rooted it and fixed the keyboard light issue through a couple CWM flashes.
As for converting the stock TAR.md5 it looks like it is possible using dsixda's Android Kitchen: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=633246 and loosely following: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1390903
Since the Glide is not officially supported I am just in the process of creating an edify_def file.
Does anyone have a edify_def file for the I927 they could send me?
Thanks!

After hours of fiddling with it I managed to get the usb port working long enough to transfer a rom to the internal sd. It's so stupid that cwm doesn't support external sd cards for the glide.
Anyways thanks for help. The phone has been sent off for warranty repair now
If anyone is curious I cleaned the port with compressed air and rubbing alcohol then I pushed the usb contacts upward with a exacto knife. I had to also insert the usb cable multiple times and wiggle it around until it finally connected to my pc.

Which ROM did you flash to get back to stock ? URL to it ?
CWMR 6012 has external sd support. But upgrading your CWMR v5 may be tricky without the USB working.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2007198
I used the inception rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1612251
But I have to stress, the only way I was able to fix my issue was to get the usb working again (briefly). Without access to the external sd, working usb or an phone that will boot it is impossible to fix this phone. Coming from the desire z which doesn't treat internal storage as an sd card, I learned a valuable lesson about cwm and Samsung phones
Thanks, mate!
The Captivate Glide i927 I have was functional, rooted, dead USB port, and with NO recovery!!!!
I used this guide that you referred to and got a recovery on it [TWRP] and now I am going to flash LiteROM since I've backed up my current stock GB
Thanks again!!!
