How is WiFi on your device? - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

(I'm running CM7)
Hey
For some reason, the WiFi signal on my device is very glitchy. It goes from 1 "bar" to 5 "bars" if I move the phone 2cm to the left or right or so.
Other devices in my house do not suffer from this problem.
Are all Desire Zs like this???

I have experienced this in my basement as my router in on the 3rd floor but very rare. It may be a glitch so if you want you can reflash the original rom that your DZ came with

Do you have the suggested radio for your location? This might affect your WiFi radio's performance. Mine is a solid 5 bar anywhere in my home and maybe a 2-3 bar when I am using campus WiFi.
Try to find the correct radio and match the RIL files, perhaps that will help in some way.

cm6 rc2 gps problems

I've had cm6 rc2 for a day now...one problem thar I noticed is gps workss...but isn't accurate at all...it shows my a dot within 1 mile of where I'm at with a big blue circle of error around the dot...is there anyway to make it accurate..or will this not be fixed untill the final version of cm6? Thanks
Um, that's because it hasn't gotten a GPS fix yet. Either something's broken in your phone, or you're somewhere that GPS signals can't get. The one-mile area is your location, based on your network (ie, "this is the area covered by the particular group of antennas on the specific cell tower you're connected to.")

Well its not working.....I never had a problem before I was rooted how can it just break??
Also I've tried..out side...in many places..its just not getting an accurate fix
Bump any ideas
1) Don't bump so often.
2) Be patient while waiting for a fix.
3) Try a different GPS enabeled device, compare how quickly it gets birds fixed.
4) Get GPS Status from the Market.

[Q] How to make GPS work ?

Hi,
Since I am new to the DHD I still do not know the correct way to get the GPS to work.
I have the GPS turned on, and I launched the Navigation app and it says "searching for GPS". It has been searching since the last 30mins without any luck.
Is this a hardware or software issue ? Anything I am doing wrong ?
MJ
You sat inside by any chance?
Yes I was inside my room but I was standing by the open window with the phone outside.

Ok, I have had similar problems and posted similar questions....
the first gps fix will take some time....the 2nd, likely a lot less...
What worked for me:
- I have setup gps to not work with network (wifi or 3G), this means it only uses the gps module....
to get a gps fix, especially in the car, it helps if you put the DHD near to the windscreen, so it is better able to pick up the GPS signal...
when I was inside my home, it took forever to get a fix, when I now put it in behind the windscreen, my DHD with silicon case gets a fix in about max 1 minute....if I use the Wifi or 3g network it is even less....
hope this helps
Try the miui site gps fix
http://www.miui-au.com/howtos/faster-gps-fix/
It works extremely well for me, and i do it every time i flash a new rom.
You could also try
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1252011
I don't see that much of a difference, but i guess its because i don't have a network connection on most of the time.
You can also try different navigation software. There are heaps of free ones on the market, and they seem to get a much faster GPS lock (Than google or HTC navigation).
I just realised that this thread was from ages ago :/
I'm also not too sure how i got to this thread in the first place...
Get gps fix or gps status & toolbox from the market to lock
Sent from my HTC Desire HD A9191
try a few of the suggestions from Q14 from ARHD thread. Updating the gps.config file as described (Q14:5) sorted it for me. I get a sat lock in seconds now.

[Q] Wifi Dropout Problem Persists: Someone, Please Help!

I'm getting really frustrated now. This problem is a real nuisance for me, as I use my Desire a lot solely for this purpose.
In my room, the wifi signal has always been pretty weak, generally only getting 1/2 bars. However, the connection is stable and still about 6mbps. This is never usually a problem for my Desire, it picks up the connection and everything works great. Stock Froyo, Sense Froyo, Sense Gingerbread, Sense V2 Gingerbread, Miui Froyo and Miui Gingerbread all operate flawlessly.
However, I now have a bit of a problem. It seems most Gingerbread AOSP ROM's cause the wifi to play up. I have tried GingerVillain, Oxygen, Redux and finally now my favourite CM7. The wifi constantly drops out and loses connection, and then takes a good 30+ seconds to reconnect. The dropouts can be as frequent as every few minutes, and generally it never lasts 4+ minutes in iplayer without losing connection. If I am just casually browsing, I don't notice. But when I am watching something on youtube or iplayer, the constant dropouts make the experience so horrible it isn't worth the effort.
What's more, there is some odd bug with the iplayer app where once a dropout happens, the audio and video goes out of sync and so on etc. All in all, it makes streaming video unusable, and this was a main reason for me buying a smartphone.
I really don't know what the problem is, but I really would appreciate some help. I would say it was a gingerbread problem, but as stated above, there are many gingerbread roms which don't cause me the same issue. Similarly, I've used an array of different radio's and kernals on each ROM. They make no difference. It depends purely on which ROM I am using. I've tried resetting the bt home hub, restoring it to factory, changing security type, moving it's position and so on. I'm pretty sure it's a ROM / Phone issue though as it works fine with other ROMS. Phone wise, I've set wifi policy to never and set a static IP address. It makes no difference. I still get wifi dropouts!
For reference sake, I'm using the latest stock Radio - 32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27 and Kernal 2.6.37.4-cyanogenmod-82245..... and obviously CM7 7.0.2.
Please someone help? I'm actually considering upgrading just to solve this. It is absolutely doing my nut in, and I am totally out of ideas or solutions.
Thanks.
Maby a weird thing but on what channel is your wifi broadcasting ?
I had almost the same problem when my wifi was on channel 12. Now on channel 3 there is no more problem.
Not that any other wifi's broadcasting here. It is just that I've got the feeling that android has a problem with "high" channels.

It was on 10 and 11.
I'll switch to 3 and give it a try. Also, I'm going to try flashing the Gingerbread Sense Drivers and RIL.
Hi,
I've also had a similar problem for quite a while now (1-2 weeks). I used my wireless connection on my standard out of factory ROM on my home wifi network, my families wifi networks and my work wifi networks without _any_ problems.
When this problem started acting up I'd start my wifi connection, it would work for like a minute or so (not dependant on the amount of data transmitted or something, idle would last as long as while downloading), and then lose connection.
The strange thing is that it indicates it is fully connected at full strength but can not establish _any_ internet connection whatsoever.
My 3G connection to my network (I live in the Netherlands) works nicely, but it isn't as fast as wifi, so this limits me quite a bit (especially at work, indoors).
I've just tried to upgrade to CM7, but doesn't give any better results. I haven't tried upgrading my RADIO, but I don't really want to if I don't have to.
Any clues what I could do to fix this?
I'm experiencing similar problems.I changed from channel 11 to 4, but it really hasn't helped. I have also set up a portable wifi (netcomm). It runs on channel 3. The network sim is quite slow but the signal strength is much steadier. My faster speedstream completely drops out. I understand this "pulsing" of signal is normal, but mine is beyond the pale.
My acer netbook doesn't demonstrate any dropout issues.
Im running an A501 3.0.1. No upgrade yet for me here in australia. But, I'm wondering if this is just poor hardware.
could try a different Radio.. the latest stock one from the new official gingerbread is in my signature..
MD5: 432ED609D76AE57BA493DA875CDC9D2D
further to my difficulty with wifi drop outs, I'm pleased to say that it appears that my problems probably are related to my home wifi, a Speedstream.
I'm currently spending a week on a houseboat and I've been using a netcomm myzone wifi fitted with a sim card from a prepaid Dodo broadband usb.
I've not had any problem with it. Granted, I've had it close by, but it still seems to work fine when I'm at the other end of the houseboat.
So my acer A501 seems to be behaving itself here. Perhaps, something is causing the speedstream to vary it's signal strength so drastically.
@OP - I posted a thread a few weeks ago about having exactly the same problems as you with AOSP ROM's and weak wifi signals. Once I went to a Sense ROM the wifi signal was great. I prefer the AOSP ROM's so I upgraded my Radio to the latest version but it didn't help at all, I didn't see any change when using wi-fi analyser.
I'm currently using CM7 ROM and just putting up with the weak signal. I'm glad it's not just me though.

[Q] Wifi Signal dissconnecting! WTF Google?

I have read that many people are having 4/3g issues on verizon but i have the GSM version and 3g works perfectly for me. BUT the damn Wifi signal sucks. I posted here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=20519741#post20519741
that i had fixed my issues but i was answering too quick. When i am a few meters away from the linksys modem everything seems to work fine (sometimes i get connection lost in speedtest) but when i go upstairs, (modems is downstairs) i get 1 signal bar, if lucky 2. But when i do a speedtest i immediately get connection lost. Wifi disconnects and reconnects after 1 sec. But when i watch netflix movies or download same thing happens. Wifi disconnects and reconnects. This doesn't happen when i am close to modem. But this is seriously google/samsungs' fault. My Sensation and Glaxy SII has FULL signal bars and they NEVER disconnect from wifi. Now my question is... Can this be fixed by flashing a different radio? Or can google update a software fix for this? Or do i i (and many others) have a faulty unit?
PS: So sorry, i meant to post in Question forum.
Bump. I really need some kind of answer because my 14 day is almost over and i have to make a decision to return it or not.
I had crap wifi and signal and flashed xxkk6 or whatever the new one is and it's much better.
However I cannot say for sure if this is your problem. I would just exchange the handset anyway
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20312089&postcount=6
I am going to try the xxkk6 one but do you know if the other one is newer?
Ok i just did fastboot flash radio radio.img and fastboot said OKAY but i am not sure how to check if i actually have the new radio. But still same issues :S
EDIT: Okay now it seems to be stable at 2 bars ONLY but atleast it doesn't disconnect, for now. Will report back if anything happens. Fingers crossed.
Ok i have had some connection lost during this 24 hours+ but it's okay for now.

Wifi not working properly on my device.

Hi
I just got my galaxy nexus 3 weeks ago. Everything went well untill 2 days ago.
Randomly and since yesterday permanently, my wifi isn't working properly.
I haven't changed any settings. Our laptop works great on wifi and this is why I tought there would maybe be a problem with my galaxy nexus device.
Under normal circomstances the "wifi bars" are blue. Now they are gray and internet isn't working.
(2 weeks ago I did a switch from yakjuxw to yakju. Everything worked properly)
I provide you with some screenshots of my device.
(As you can see I'm connected to wifi)
What do you reckon the problem could be?
Thanks
(ps: posted this with the laptop connected to wifi right now)
I'm experiencing some strange issues as well. I haven't nailed anything down, but it seems I'm having data problems (both wi-fi and vzw data) when I'm in a low signal area (my house) around -100dbm. Phone and text seem to work fine, but it's a little strange that the wi-fi would drop out too. During this time my wi-fi and signal meter are gray. If I restart the phone, everything seems to work again. The last restart was 12 hours ago and the signal is still "blue" now, but I know at some point it will "gray out" again. I do not experience this problem at work, and both wi-fi and signal meters are blue.
This is kind of a big deal for me because I rely on my phone for email notifications and I come to find after the fact I have several emails and never received the notifications on my phone.
Looking around the web, it seems others are experiencing various signal issues as well, but no one has any solutions and I'm not even sure if the issues I've seen are related.
Yes very strange indeed. I tried turning my phone off and on again but the wifi signal meter is stil gray.
I remember my brother buying a HTC sensation last week. He had a gray wifi signal meter from the beginning. Luckely he could attach his HTC to the pc and download updates wich fixed the wifi signal problem.
No updates for us yet. I wonder if they will fix this in 4.0.3 and if they even know about this issue...
I'm now at another place with wifi acces and it seems to work Here... maybe it is a compatibility problem with the router? I bet that when I go back to my place the wifi signal meter Will be gray again...
How to make it work properly?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
My wifi goes to sleep every time the phone goes to sleep, despite having it set to always on. Also signal is poor. Where my iPhone 4 has full or 4 out of 5 bars, the GNex only has 1 or 2 bars.
I´m having these problems too... my other devices work fine everywhere in my house, but gnex doesn´t... it gets a very bad signal. I´m on 4.0.1 (OTA update hasn´t arrived to my phone yet... whyyyy!?).

You might have a yakjuxw or other yakju-- built instead of a yakju? I THINK (not sure) that they receive updates slower. I think they go via samsung or other carries.
Anyway I'm now at 4.0.2 and tbh I much more prefer 4.0.1. Since i got to 4.0.2 my phone seems a bit slower.
All of a sudden my gray wifi signal meter turned blue (after 2 days being gray). I can now even connect to ANOTHER network that I was never able to connect too ...
I think this problem is very much related to the phone/phone's software. I didn't change any settings nor apps...
