How To Update Pre-Installed Swype to Swype Beta - Galaxy S I9000 Themes and Apps

I never really found a proper guide on how to update the Samsung Salaxy S pre-installed Swype and after figuring out how to do it i thought i'd share it with whoever needed it.
1) To update the pre-installed Swype to Swype beta you have to have root access or else this isn't going to work
2) Download "Root App Remover" and "Root Explorer" from the android market
3) Run Root App Remover (it will take a minute for it to initially scan the phone for system and user apps)
4) Using Root App Remover go to system apps scroll down to Swype tap it and press recycle, to completely uninstall it (which you have to do) press menu then "SystemApp Recycler" and uninstall it.
5) Run Root Explorer and press the "Mount R/W" button at the top if it isn't already selected, after that to go "system" folder then the "lib" folder and delete the file "libswypecore.so" (if it isn't there then go back into system and then back again)
6) After that go into the "data" folder then the "data" folder and delete "com.android.android.inputmethod" file (if its not there then quit root explorer)
7) After that go to the Swype Beta Website and register, go through all the various steps untill you've finished downloading and installing the Swype Installer.
8) Run Swype Installer and go through all the steps, then download and install the Swype Beta, generate the license using the installer and your done the newest Swype beta is now installed one you Samsung Galaxy S
Sorry if this guide is too long i just tried to explain it in detail. I Hope this guide helped you install the newest Swype beta, if you have any questions feel free to ask i'll get back to you as soon as possible.

Thanks for the guide. I used Titanium to remove the old version. After a reboot the new one installed just fine

Do u find the swype 3 beta much better than what came with our phones? I'm on jsd.

Same here, Titanium worked like a charm. A one-step approach...

It seems quite a bit faster and the horizontal word choice bar is so much better than the intrusive popup list. I like it a lot more than the stock version.

Well i have just found the answer to a question i posted a while back:
What happened to BlindType?
The answer is here. Swype now incorporates many of the features that BlindType had including the movable keyboard!

Thanks, your method worked...

The easiest way:
1) Gain root
2) Install Super Manager (from Market)
3) Enable root mode on Super Manger (under Settings)
4) Delete Swype (APK-Manager -> search for swype -> long press and delete),
5) Reboot
6) Install Swype Beta

Yep, definitely worth updating to the new beta since it doesn't take much effort to uninstall the pre-installed outdated version of Swype that came with the phone anyways

Very nice, thanks

I didn't see either of the two apps you mention, but I downloaded and used "Root Uninstaller" and "Root Browser" from the Market instead, and they worked fine...just FYI. Thanks!

I would add a step for some folks -
6a) Boot into CWM recovery, clear cache, clear dalvik cache, reboot.
Without that step, my install of Swype beta would FC upon launch but after starting over and clearing the caches, I was able to install and use no problem.

Excellent.. I am able to SWYPE Now

i followed the Titanium backup root, I uninstalled using TB did not restart and ran the Swype installer and everything worked thereafter.
I installed the tablet version and in portrait mode, the keyboard is tiny although it doesn't affect swyping, is there a way to make it slightly larger?

Swype isnt Saved as standard input??? pls help
Hi, the installation worked fine, but i have to set up swype as standard input method after rebooting my device.
How can i fix that?

[Q] How can I delete the internal software?

For some internal softwares such as "Finance/Listen/music..." may not be used, I want to delete these softwares. But I can't find the way or app to do it. How can I do?
Thanks!
If you are rooted, go to market and get a file explorer for root. You can access system files. Make sure the fike explorer has su permissions and once in file manager you mount from ro to rw and go to system / app. I use root explorer. Hope this helps. Titanium Backup easiest. It has an uninstall feature.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
Yeah just to simplify the other guy's response just use titanium backup. Then go to the backup/restore tab, find the finance app, then tap it and select uninstall. It's that easy
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 running Cyanogenmod.
In my experiences, I'd say that disabling the app would be a better option. I only say this because the recent OTA update wouldn't go because Google Goggles was completely uninstalled and there was no way for me to force the installation. I ended up jumping through hoops and balancing a ball on my nose to get the app re-installed so that the update would be clean.
In short, you might run into issues in future updates, should there be any, if you uninstall apps. If you don't want it shown or running, disabling it won't run the service and the icon disappears. Besides, the amount of disk space you gain from removing it is incredibly small.
while i agree that disabling the apps was best when we didn't have perm root, now we can write to /system so if an update comes out we can just put the apps back and apply, or wait a few hours and get a rooted update with all the stuff we need from the OTA and we don't have to worry about stuff not working because app X was removed

Swype installation help

Noob question here....
I am trying to install the latest version of Swype (v2.15.56.14870)
I have an older version which came preinstalled on my SGS and therefore is a system application. Is there anyway i can install this newer version without having to root my phone?
Perhaps the "update.zip" in recovery mode..
I've tried putting the newer app on my phone, both external sd and internal sd then trying to install with Astro. I only get the option to "UnInstall" "Upgrade" or "Launch"
If i select upgrade a message popus up with, "This is a system application. Do you still want to replace it?"
I hit "OK" then "Install" ....a few seconds later phone states, "Application not installed"
I am starting to assume that rooting is the only way to install the newer version, given that it is a system application. However if anyone knows of a method without root then please advise on correct procedure.
Thank you.
I think with preinstalled swype you have a swype apk in /system/app (which is why you cannot uninstall) and there's a swype lib in /system/lib. If you had root I think you can just delete these and its gone.
After that you could install the new one normally.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Can you do it with ADB?
You will need to root your phone. It shouldn't be too hard to do. What phone do you have?
I don't think there's anyway around it without rooting.
What you would need to do is backup the built in Swype (Just in case anything goes wrong.) Delete the system files related to it which you would need root permissions to do. Then restart your phone. Install the new version of Swype.
I did this the other day since I got an invite to the Swype beta.

Swiftkey language pack wont install

Hello, as stated above I'm unable to install the swiftkey language pack on my Galaxy nexus
I'm running the latest version of swiftkey and the latest nightly of cyanogen (4.3)
My issue is that when I install swiftkey (installs fine) I hit the first step and it fails to install the language pack. I install the trial version and it works fine.
I have done the following to trouble shoot:
completely unisntall swiftkey
Manually remove the folder in \data\data\com.touchtype.swiftkey
tried renaming the trial folder to the above folder
changed permissions to 777 on the above folder
All fail
works fine on stock
I have also read that people are having issues with custom roms with swiftkey language pack not installing.
Is there a way I can install a debug app and see what is failing so I can resolve this my self? Swiftkey support is not helping any and none of the suggestions google returns helps.
Thanks
Ryan
working
there was another com.touchtype.swiftkey that showed up after I logged in as root, once I deleted this one, rebooted and reinstalled it started working....man, anyways swiftkey support got back to me so good for them on that.
Thanks guys

I'm experiencing somewhat similar issues (except mine comes with phone reboots after unmounting from my computer). Was the other SwiftKey folder found in the same location (/data/data)? And did you also have to remove /sdcard/Android/com.touchtype.swiftkey as well?
Thanks.
Try this:
Try this (for root):
->uninstall swiftkey
->Install root explorer,
->select r/w
->search for "swift" delete everything you find(even backups made from titanium backup),
->reboot your phone
->Install swiftkey
Worked amazingly for me

[Q] Sense 6 black keyboard

Hey, i just downloaded a sense 7 rom and i really like it but the white keyboard isnt for me. I have been looking for a way to get that old black keyboard from sense 6 back. I'm also a one in a million people that dont like swiftkey either.
Does anyone know a way to get the black keyboard back?
I found an old apk but it wouldn't install.
Make a theme with the HTC theme engine. Easy !
Welcome to my life: I was actually in the midst of it when you posted your thread I'm typing this on Sense 6 keyboard. It's the best I've ever used. They really ruined it in sense 7.
Its a bit gory, but here's what worked for me on ARHD 40.3:
1. Uninstall any updates you made to Sense 7 keyboard and it's dictionaries.
2. Go to: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2735764
3. Download imeset.zip and HTCIme.apk from near the end of post#1.
4. Roll your sleeves up.
5. Extract imeset.zip and Select the apks for language(s) you want. Copy your desired apk(s) into the respective folder in /system/app/IMExT9LANGUAGE. I.E. English would go into the folder named IMEXT9English, Arabic would go into IMEXT9Arabic. You will be overwriting existing apks. Make sure to set the permissions to -rw-r--r--
6. Rename the HTCIME.apk you downloaded to HTC_IME.apk and copy it to /system/priv-app/HTC_IME/. Again, set permissions to -rw-r--r--
7. Reboot.
8. Go into the play store and update your HTC Sense Input app to the latest 6.3 version. Otherwise, if the play store serves you the 7.x update, you can download the HTC ime 6.3 update from:
http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/htc-co...-sense-input-6-3-847791-android-apk-download/
9. Now you can go into the keyboard settings, customize it, and PROFIT.
10. If you get crashes then you'll need to clear both cache & dalvic.
Cheers

Amazing.
But one thing, since im a completely worthless noob, what do you mean changing permissions? Where/how do i do that?
If you're using ES File Explorer, you'd select the file, go into the menu and select properties. From within the properties you'd tap the "change" button next to permissions. Use the checkboxes to change permissions. You might want to go into any folder in /system /app choose an apk and look at how its permissions are set. Apply the same permissions to your freshly copied apks.
Cheers
Ok so I installed the apk and it worked! Its black!
No luck customizing colors but black>white anyday
But I can't edit the keyboard settings cause it crashes every time so ill try clearing cashe and dalvic.
edit: no luck. Keeps crashing. Can't edit its settings, activate its swype feature or remove haptic feedback (which idk why people like)
Did the same for me before I cleared dalvic & cache, then updated the app from the play store (from 6.2.79x to 6.2.83x). Works flawlessly now.

No, it's not supposed to! Did you follow my instructions step-by-step? Coz I'm having a blast with my keyboard here!
Start over, please, and do it properly this time.
Also, add a step 4.5:
Go to setting-> apps->all-> and clear data for HTC sense input, then proceed to step 5.
Yes, the ime port isn't working.
I installed the ime as described. After that it was black, but it crashed, if I want anything changing. It's no matter if I clear the dalvik or not.
I updated it from play store. Now working all, but it is white again.

Well, you probably went a full circle and re-installed the 7.x keyboard ime again
So, don't update to the market version; instead, install the last 6.x version from apk mirror:

Cann't install apps anymore on Pixel 2XL

Hello all,
I cann't find a solution to install apps in sideload on my Pixel 2XL.
It was after flashing version 10 in the beginning of september.
After a lot of trying I give up and hope someone else here can help me.
My Pixel 2XL is unlocked but not rooted.
Normally I do the sideload by transfer an apk to my dropbox. After that I start it up and do what the system tells me.
Nowadays I got a return of a message in dropbox that -it is impossible to open the apk and download an app to open the apk-.
After that I download the apk to my download folder to try again. Then, when trying to startup, I get a popup with the name off the apk, the version nr, the size and packagename.
There is also a button to view apk content. When I push that button the right folders of the apk are indeed visible.
There are also 3 options. One to install, one to go to playstore and one to stop further actions and go back.
When I try to use the button install the result is that nothing happened, no signal, no message from the system, no popup, really nothing.
You all know that this is not what I want. I just want to install the apk. I have tried it with a few other apk's with the same results. :crying:
Before the last OTA upgrade to android 10 it was normal to install with these methods.
Thanks for who can helping me and others for trying to help me.
Greetings.

Have you enabled install apps from unknown sources? You'll also need to enable apps to install apps from what I can see in android 10. If you pull up an apps indignation you can expand the options and there will be an option to allow it to install apps, which Dropbox may need. The first one needs to be enabled to install apks from the download folder.

Thanks for helping me.
I did all these settings before.
Now I tried to open another filemanager (Google Files) and that did the job.
I don't know why installing in dropbox or installing in es file explorer doesn't do the same with equal settings.
Maybe an idea to uninstall and re-install these apps?
Anyway, a lot of thanks for your answer.

Android 10, install from unknown sources is like an app permission now, you have to grant it to things like chrome (download apk and install) and file managers rather than a global setting for phone. Safer as you trust an app o do it rather than letting some malware in background filling your phone with crap.

Uninstalling and reinstalling will not work, as I've done that with my modded version of ES File Explorer. This is a change in Android itself.
Go to Settings > Apps & Notifications > Special App Access > Install Unknown Apps. A list of apps will appear. Select an app and toggle the switch.
NOTE: Dropbox is on the list, but at least on my device my modded version of ES File Explorer is not.
